    Memories, memories... Oh, how I wanted one of those. Not because I had a plane for it, but because of the very reason I got into modelling in the first place…. I really like MINI-mechanics….
    Great vid! Probably a sound analysis can get you the RPM....

      I'll get a run in outside here soon so I can get real RPM readings. The thing is so damn small that framing the video could be a bit tough.

    @andrasbalogh7659 Год назад

    I audiotached it at 23k rpm (with an Android phone app called RPM Gauge, that returns the same readings as conventional photocell rpm gauges), the engine, if well set, and even if only 20% nitro is in the fuel, typically runs near 27k on the bench. A better balanced prop would have allowed it to run faster than 23k. The greyish oil dripping from the crankcase front shows there is aluminum abrasion in the crank, usually caused by unbalanced propellers, that the 010 Tee Dee-s are very sensitive too. If run unbalanced extensively, the shaft to crankcase fit will be worn out, and the engine will be hard to start and erratic to run. Nice video, so about 2.5 ccm fuel will keep it running for about 2 minutes...I am using them on small RC planes with external tanks made of party balloons...

    They tend to run in the 25k RPM area! Adorable little engines too!

    Nice video. It's pretty amazing Leroy Cox produced these on modified screw machines and kept tolerances down to millionths of an inch. My dad owned a machine business and said he couldn't buy the aluminum stock for what the complete engine sold for.

    I still have an 010 engine I bought new, maybe 1969 or 70. May need a glow plug though. I used to have it mounted on a Thermic 50 RC with a "galloping ghost" single channel receiver. Fun stuff.Thanks for posting.

    Typical messy COX 2-stroke spraying oil everywhere...Ya gottta love 'em. I went through a lot of the .049s but never owned the .010.

    very cool, my old man tells me the cox reps way back used to have them as tie pins!.. "hey do you wanna buy a cool engine?... well let me undo my tie... have you any fuel?.. lets go"... superb!!

    I traced the sound on my oscilloscope, and it showed 388 revs per second. that works out to 23,280 RPM! An engine that runs as fast as a DREMEL tool. That's actually quite impressive.

    I knew an old engine collector he ran them in the house mostly diesel needless to say the house wasn't much as you walk around in it you could hear the oil ooze out of the wood floor LOL

    They will turn 30,000 with no problem. At the time they were introduced (1961), they were the fastest revving standard production model engines in the world.

    I would build a running .0050 engine, but then someone else would build a .00250 engine and I would be all pissed off.

    If use a flashlight shining on the prop your tach will work !
    There was not enough light that’s how it works just try it next time it will work !
    JUST A FYI !!
    Have a great day !

      I am aware of how an OPTICAL tachometer works. The issue was running this in the house under fluorescent lights.

      Good Luck David !
      You should not be running even the smallest engine ever produced in your house just common sense !!!!
      You have been sniffing too much nitro fumes over the years !!
      And you don’t call yourself the RC enthusiast anymore ?
      And you got out of the hobby ?
      WTF !
      You never was a true RC guy in fact you probably CRASHED every plane you ever tried too fly !
      If you truly loved the RC hobby you would have your AMA License and be apart of your local club and actually support the hobby you’re just making money by this RUclips channel !
      And now you don’t even have your original channel !
      Why did RUclips take it down ?
      There’s always a reason and you’re just not being truthful !
      Like I said have fun sniffing your nitro fumes in your house !
      I was just trying to be helpful maybe it’s TOO MUCH of that Florida sun getting too you !!
      Enjoy your flying season oh that’s right you QUIT the hobby !!
      Very sad !!

    Have one at home and will soon put it on model😉
    Just love that Cox engines. My first was black widow 2 that I instaled on 1,5m HLG glider. It was crazy, unlimited vertical for almost 4minutes...
    Great video!

    I did the exact same thing 50 years ago. Amazing rpm. I made a mistake...one run and it was worn out. Not adequate lubrication.

  • @KE-nl4vk
    @KE-nl4vk 4 года назад +1

    Tachs need daylight behind the engine/prop. if blocked by bench or mount behind the engine or ran indoor light with frequency, 60 hz, they wont pick up light cut offs with prop turning. if you run outside and engine mounted on lower profile mount to let light behind prop, it should give you the reading. I guess!

  • @DBJr1980
    @DBJr1980 4 года назад

    I bet that had to be at least 25K RPM if not more. That thing sure was screaming pretty good.

  • @mikemoore9757
    @mikemoore9757 4 года назад +2

    It could have something to do with your overhead lamps and the 60 cycle strobe effect. If you would try it out doors in the sunlight, your tach might work correctly. I am sure you would be impressed at the rpm that little beast will produce.

    Cool little engines. Regarding the tach, fluorescent light will screw them up. At least the instructions say they will. Never tried to use it inside🤣

      Yeah, that is all it was picking up. I'll do another run outside sometime.

    • @TestECull

      AC lights in general. I run incandescent bulbs and I can get a reading that's a multiple of 60 if I point my tach at my light.

    nice lil engine, have you seen the exhaust throttle rings on the .020 and .049? pretty clever and simple... I have one on an 049 id like to put on a small electric conversion some day..

  • @andreaskreilinger3295
    @andreaskreilinger3295 4 года назад +1

    Hy David. Great video! You can‘t measure the RPM indoor, cause your lights are blinking 100 times a second. (50hz ac).

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  4 года назад +1

      Yes, I realize that. Actually where I am it is 60Hz.

  • @av8rdav
    @av8rdav 4 года назад

    If you use LED lighting the tach should work. Fluorescent and incandescent lights will fool the tach. To check it point the tach at the lights and on 2 blade setting it should be reading 3600 RPM. 3 blade setting 2400 RPM.

    I want one of those! The tach will not work with indoor lighting, turn off the overhead light and put a small flashlight behind the motor and it will work.

    The revs only get to 24600 rpm on this video.

    • @dmrcflyr2
      @dmrcflyr2  4 года назад

      I think I could have gotten some more if I had adjusted the HSN a tad. You can hear the RPM decrease when I remove the glow clip. There was a lot going on and the runs are very short. So a bit of trial and error, but I wanted to capture the first time I had the thing running.

    • @vincentrobinette1507

      I got 23,280 RPM by tracing the sound on my oscilloscope.

  • @AmpAbuser
    @AmpAbuser 4 года назад +1

    23,175 rpm average, a flashlight would have helped get the readings from the photo cell. =) With some NV tweaking and a good centered prop
    the average good engine will hit 28k Some even more, here is one mine at 33k ruclips.net/video/78SsoZgQ-qA/видео.html
    I have a Nano that hit 42k down wind pass. Best speed from a TD .010 is currently 130.4 mph pitch speed best down wind pass. 2.56 x 4N prop.

    • @1unaffiliated1
      @1unaffiliated1 4 года назад

      Yup, put your tach up to the fluorescent lights see what it reads, Dave
      Try it with an incandescent light instead.

    • @dmrcflyr2

      Yes, I realize this already. I only have LED lighting in my room. I know full well about fluorescent lighting and tachs. I really can't make a video in the dark....

      @@dmrcflyr2 Yikes, glad I didn't suggest LED's, doesn't work with that either. Hmmm. Oh well, outdoors only...
