    Today we are going to dig into the Nicaraguan Cordoba, the currency of this central American county. Currently valued at C$36.6 to $1USD the country uses both currencies in practice, but only the Cordoba is official. ATMs will dispense both and many expats attempt to work completely from US dollars, but better prices and more options exist to those who switch to the local currency.
    Today we also get to play with a new Ulanzi GoPro quick release tripod self stick combo!

      Ha
      I May have to work on that! 😃
      I did start a RUclips channel and got the first short video up so friends, family, and ex coworkers can follow along with us on our adventure to Nicaragua. You make it look so easy…it’s not. But I think it will be a hobby I will enjoy. If nothing else it may be like a video scrap book for kids and grandkids to re watch in the future.

    The ATM machines also charge a fee which is different from the foreign exchange fees that the cards don't charge. How much do the ATMs charge per withdrawal??

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog

      @@dovygoodguy1296 that's determined by your bank, not the ATM. Unless you hit $10,000 USD. That's a hard daily limit.

    • @dovygoodguy1296
      @dovygoodguy1296 Год назад

      @@ScottAlanMillerVlog Right, so an ATM has its limit per withdrawal plus the $4 fee, regardless of what the card company charges. But I thought the ATMs themselves established that limit.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Год назад

      @@dovygoodguy1296 they can, but I've never heard of someone hitting that limit before hitting their bank limit. And whatever that limit is would be individualized to the ATM itself, not a general rule. but it must be incredibly high as we can take out thousands a day without a problem.

    The problem with using an ATM and getting Cordobas is the exchange rate the banks give you. Last time I checked, the rate was 35.6 cords to the USD. Lafise only gave me 35.1 and BAC gave me 34.8. No where is this advertised and the only way to figure it out is to compare the transaction with your statement. I suggest taking out C$10,000 to keep the math simple and see for yourself. As you said, the money traders on the street will give you the best exchange rate. Grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations will give you the going rate when using credit cards. These days I only take USD from the ATM and let the restaurants and tiendas I frequent make a few extra cords on the conversion.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Год назад +1

      It's supposed to be your bank. The ATM is supposed to ask if you want to exchange. Otherwise your own bank should be the one doing it.

    • @brettsouza6650
      @brettsouza6650 Год назад +1

      @@ScottAlanMillerVlog Interesting. I only get to choose if I want to withdraw USD or Cordobas. I use Charles Schwab but also have USAA. I will try both and see what rate I get. Both reimburse transaction fees and niether charge to take out USD so I will compare both exchange rates and report back.

    Thanks again for the useful info. As a Canadian and French citizen living in Spain, I only have a euro account with Santander.
    While I know that I can use my international credit card, like you said, is it necessary for me to have a US dollar account?
    I wanted to cut all ties eventually with Europe once I'm settled in. Can you function with only córdobas?

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Год назад +1

      You need an account somewhere, but that can be in Euros. What you withdraw from the ATM has to be dollars or Cordoba. You can pull either from any account. The ATM will handle the conversion. There is no need for a local account in Nicaragua or a foreign account in US dollars.
      However, you do need a foreign bank. You can't realistically cut all banking ties with Spain. You could move your bank to another EU country, but you can't function 100% out of Nicaragua without severe limitations and overhead. You don't really want to do that.

      @andrewb8287 8 месяцев назад +1

      I don’t really like using change either. I was just kind of curious if I should bring some or not. People really highly discourage using the money changers. Or you should at least have somebody with you. But I do know most people are full of crap, and like to tell stories. What do you think?

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  8 месяцев назад +1

      tomorrow's video is uploading right now and is literally about who you shouldn't use money exchangers... but not at all for the reason you think. IF you are going to exchange money (why would that even come up for normal people... it shouldn't) then the people standing on the street are quite literally the ONLY people you should ever use. Anyone telling you otherwise is clueless. They are the official place to exchange and you should never use something else. @@andrewb8287
