  • First Visit to an ALDI. We have never been to an ALDI. Everyone talks about them, so we had to try one.
    It is a no-frills grocery shopping experience where 90 percent of the groceries they offer are under their exclusive brand. They do have some name brand items.
    There were items at ALDI that we did not expect. Will we go back?
    Note that prices in this video is for the State of Indiana from 6/16 to 6/22. Prices may vary depending on your location.

    I live in Florida and buy milk and eggs at Aldi all the time. Compared to paying $4.50/gall for milk and $2.50 for eggs in other stores. In my opinion Aldi food isn't that bad and alot of things there are a great deal Some foods taste just like the brand names.Fruits and veggies are a great price compared to the other stores here and good.. The cold cuts and cheese are very good and a great price. Great prices on bread too. If you love chocolate it's yummy and a great price. Aldi also supports local farms. In my opinion great store.

      Often the no brand products taste like the brand because they are the brand. Aldi is know for their secret deals with brand company so the products are from the brand factory with little changes in receptie like less sugar, more spice etc.. In the end it is the brand product in non brand label package.

    Had to laugh when you brought a Trader Joe's bag with you.
    In Germany, Aldi split in Aldi North and Aldi South back in the early 1960s over a family dispute between the two owning brothers. What you have as Aldi in the U.S. is actually Aldi South while Trader Joe's belongs to Aldi North, so you're bringing a token of their "arch rival" with you.

    FYI, when you find something you like on the "home goods, etc." isle, you better get it when you see it b/c most likely it won't be there when you return. They really do have some great items on that isle, and at good prices. I have several things I've bought on that isle that I use a lot. Aldi is always on my list of places to shop, including Costco, Sam's, Target, Harris Teeter, Trader Joe's, and now Wegman's (and I have to go out of town to shop at all of these). I do wish we had a Kroger nearby, but when they bought out Harris Teeter they turned all the Kroger stores (in our surrounding area) to Harris Teeters (which is way more expensive than the prices you show from Kroger).

    Aldi and Trader Joe's are not owned by the same people. It started out that way -- two brothers founded a German grocery store that became a very successful chain. Eventually the brothers disagreed on how to run the stores, so they (amicably) split the empire in two. One brother ran half the stores while the other brother took charge of the rest. It's all in the same family but still -- two separate owners.

      Trader Joes belongs to Aldi-North and the "yellow" Aldi in the US is Aldi-South

    • @darkredvan
      @darkredvan 3 года назад +4

      In fact the split of the original company originated over a dispute if to sell cigarettes in their stores or not. The two brothers could not reach an agreement how to move on, so they split the original company in two, Aldi Nord (north) and Aldi Süd (south). Foreign country Aldis usually were divided between the both companies. In the US Aldi Nord acquired Trader Joe’s, Aldi Süd operates under the Aldi name. Though they are owned by cousins, they operate independently. Though Aldis worldwide operate more or less by the same system, products are usually bought locally / regionally. Though during special sales they sell German stuff everywhere (for example Christmas stuff).

    • @lcestimator
      @lcestimator 3 года назад +1

      This is incorrect. The split happened so they wouldn’t be competing with each other. One brother took the south the other the north. Trader Joe’s is owned by both of them

    • @Astrofrank
      @Astrofrank 2 года назад

      @@lcestimator It is unclear why they split, but Trader Joe's is owned by the Markus Stiftung which is only related to Aldi Nord, not to Aldi Süd.

    • @MHG1023
      @MHG1023 2 года назад +1

      @@lcestimator Incorrect.
      Trader Joe´s is solely owned by Aldi-Nord.
      The reason why ALDI-Nord is not operating as such in the US is because when the family business was split up they were not yet doing business internationally but intended to do so. In order not to compete with each other on the international markets they made a list of countries around the world and agreed to assign each country to only one of the ALDI companies. The US is actually a special in the ALDI-world as it was initially pretty far back on their priority list then and they did actually agree on both being "allowed" to eventually serve that market simply because of its size.
      ALDI-Sued was the first who decided to start in the US market and registered ALDI as a trademark.
      Some years later ALDI-Nord decided to follow but - as both are legally completely separate companies - was faced with the trademark issue.
      So, they bought Trader Joe´s and its trademark (the company already existed before) and transformed it to become their US - off spring ...
      Fun fact: In Germany ALDI-Nord uses the Trader Joe´s brand for some of their own items (like packed nuts / dried fruits / etc.) and I´m quite confident 98% of ALDI-Nord customers in Germany have no clue (and care even less) where the brand name originates from.

    In Germany the biggest competition of Aldi is Lidl. They are working nearly by the same system, though Lidl has slightly more name brands. There were numerous tests regarding quality and prices. Depending on the choice of products one or the other was cheaper. However over all those tests and comparisons Aldi was slightly cheaper and quality was regarded a little bit better. Though it really depends on personal taste. Generally Aldi is regarded highly for good quality at low prices. BTW most of their own brands are made by big name brand producers, quality generally is higher than would be expected.

    Aldi is a Swedish/German grocery store, so many items are imported from Sweden and Germany. They also do everything in a Swedish or German way.
    Aldi charges a quarter for a basket so that you will bring it back. By doing this, they don't have to hire people get baskets from the parking lot. This is one way they keep prices low. Most grocery stores in Europe also do this, but they charge more per cart.
    They don't give away free sacks. You either have to bring your own bags, buy their expensive bags, or pull an empty box off the shelf. Aldi is one of few stores that actually encourages you to take empty boxes so they don't have to break them down and recycle them or throw them away. These are 2 more ways Aldi keeps prices low.
    Aldi was founded on the principle of making customers do a little more work so they can save more money.

    Aldi should include the Sales Tax in the prices just to get peopls minds blown at the cashout. They will piss of the Competiotn. Becasue they will stil have lower pirces on the price tags with tax then other stores have without. And it would show the USA how its done and also be very nice for the customers.

    I think they should offer more German products, like German rolls (Brötchen) and bread.

    With as many food allergies as I have, I don't usually shop for myself at Aldi, but I do shop for my son. I like their extra items, especially the summer gardening and cooking things. We have two in the area, one on the way home from work, so I can get their easily. Just remember to keep a quarter for the cart. I keep one in my car's cupholder so I can always have a quarter and not have to scramble for one. I think they have good prices if that's the stuff you can eat.

    Love Aldi- went there today. Love their fresh caught Salmon.Aldi eggs and milk are consistently lower in price than Kroger- of course Kroger has them as a loss leader occasionally.I love raisin bread with pimento cheese. I got their brand of Dave’s Killer Bread there today for $2.59 I believe, delicious

    Hi! I have been to Aldi's in Southaven, MS often and I love going there. You can spend 20 cents or so. They have a good selection on food items. We buy keto bread often from there. The organic food they have is great!

    You two really know your prices. I never look at prices, I buy mostly organic and just buy what I want but I did see some organic prices and I pay 30 to 50 percent more on organic prices. I do not like Costco organic hamburger. Wow, I probably would save thousands of dollars a year by comparing prices. Great job.

    I'm in Maryland, and the prices at Aldi vary from store to store. One store had eggs for 69 cents and I went to another Aldi, not too far away, and they were $1.29! I've gotten a gallon of milk for only $.89! The sodas are usually not priced as well, and the name brands that they have are not the best deal either. But, I don't have to buy the name brands and I find most of the Aldi brands are very good. Aldi is my store of choice!

    You are correct. Store brands are the same as brand names for most things. I use to work manufacturing and items didn't change only the package and sometimes only the label. Worked Hanover Shoes , Metro Pants and poultry processing. Don't know if they are still in business but tags , shoestamp only thing that changes. Chicken mostly went by weight on who got what. But over the years that may have changed

    Live in Mi and just paid $1.96 for eggs at aldi. When they go on sale I freeze them. Wisk each egg and pour into a muffin tin sprayed with pam when they are frozen wrap individually and put in freezer good for a year. Make great easy scrambled eggs in the microwave. Aldi is a great place to shop, but know your prices

    I buy meats, cheeses, dairy, eggs, some veggies and fruits there. The organic milk I buy is now $2 cheaper than Walmart’s. I buy seafood there too. I never buy snacks, they are tasteless. Some things are great, some not so much. I DO LOVE the checkout there. What I wait in line for at Kroger and Walmart takes maybe 60 seconds at Aldi. And, I love the clean parking lot, no carts everywhere. In the three years or so I have shopped there I have only seen one couple leave their two carts on the lot. But, of course, they were all of 25 feet from the return area!

    Find it very curious that Aldi is often in the same parking lot as a Lowe's; that's what we have here in the Columbus, OH area and didn't think about it until I saw this video!

      I didn't even think of it. One of ours is nowhere near Lowe's but the other one is right next to it.
