We bought a new house that came with a Tesla charger. My wife works an hour away. So we thought trade in our gas equinox for an EV equinox and save money on gas. The ev version cost about 50% more than what we financed our gas for and the dealer wanted THREE times what our monthly payment is for gas equinox for the monthly payment of the EV

Glad you did not buy the car for that price. You know you can use a non dealership leasing company and you understand that rates jumped way up from when you got your current ICE right? This is apples and oranges in comparison. Blaming EVs for the current economic swing is unjustified.
I never mentioned anything about a comparable price but a Bolt, or Leaf or Kona, Model 3 etc will do 4 people but you require an SUV likely for 5... again apples and oranges.
Your unique case does not reflect the EV industry as a whole.

Don't be a fool... Batteries are a quarter century away from being compact & powerful enough to even compare to internal combustion's power & range capability.
No electric vehicle will EVER make the 10,000 horsepower a Top-Fuel dragster makes, and will take decades before they cover the ~900 miles a newer truck can.
