  • Our executive producer on Cruise Doris Visits, is the retired filmmaker Stuart St Paul.
He and still his close friend actress Margot Hardiman starred in the absolutely revolutionary mega advert from Woolworth in Christmas 1980.
After years of being on the bench at Radio 1 and not being in the limelight, this is an example of how he was always there, but not quite the leading character. This was about 12 years into his over 50 years in the industry, he left Radio 1 about 1977, then was on UBN, Metro, and Orwell. See the Stuart St Paul playlist for his career-in-a-page and other films of his work, as actor, stunt coordinator, and director.
We just thought we would add it to our Christmas fun bag, Merry Christmas!

I'm the tuba player in this Woolworth's commercial (short guy, left of shot) that opens & closes the film... the group of musicians walking slowly towards the camera. I thought the commercial was shot at the Arnedale Centre, Luton. It was made by Abacus Productions. Look out for the 'Disneyesque' castle over the store name... a beautiful, hand-painted matte, the like of which would probably never be attached to the front of a film camera these days.

Things were different back then, Christmas wasn't overly advertised and in your face to the point you lost all interest by early December. There was an excitement in anticipation.

As the saying goes "it's amazing how as we get older, the better the past becomes". You're just not a kid anymore. You're not looking at the world through the eyes of a kid. The 80s were actually pretty grim in many ways. You've just got old (and seemingly bitter), that's all.
