Bless you my dear! This is the best video/ instruction on measuring for pants ever! You explain the pain out of measurement. Your demo on measuremen,t belissima. You are so right about fit. If your clothes fit, you feel and move so much better. I'm not a rich gal but when I make my clothes, I try to make them as good as any gal who can walk into an expensive shop and buy the best. That I strive to give myself and those I sew for.
Hello, this series is an absolute life saver! I'm fairly new to sewing and recently came across fit issues with a pant pattern that ended up looking horrendous on me. I'm excited to learn! And thank you so much for sharing your knowledge :)
I just found your videos and I luv watching you are very informative and I am learning be things. Thank you and keep teaching. Believe it or not one of the first things I ever Made was a pair of jeans they came out perfect I was in high school in home economics. I got an A and someone even bought them right off of me for $50.00! That made me feel great and that I wanted to continue sewing.
So much useful information. I'm also very tilted and have a shorter front rise than the back. I have never been able to get pants to fit. Looking forward to this sew along.
Wow! On May 30th you were getting to 5,000 and as of today you’re over 8.5 K! Congratulations! I’m going to be working my way through these videos as I’ve had maybe 2 pairs of pants in my whole life that have fit me well. I want to finally just make myself two or three pairs of slacks for professional wear and 2-3 pairs of pants and maybe a couple of shorts for casual wear. My body size and shape has changed remarkably after a triplet pregnancy followed shortly by a singleton pregnancy. Almost four years later and my body is still showing the wreckage 😃. I always feel better in clothes that fit well and it’s time to retire the maternity wear! So, thanks for sharing this process.
Pants, my nemesis! I recently bought a super expensive system and I’ve struggled through five slopers, and I still hate the fit of my pants. They have all the same fitting issues as RTW pants, which is what I was hoping to resolve! Thanks for doing this series.
I have just rewatched this video. I sewed most of my clothes since middle school with the help of my expert sewist mom. Patterns fit my tiny teenage body almost perfectly with only a couple of small adjustments. Fast forward a lot of years. I’ve started garment sewing again on a much changed body. Pants have been a nightmare. A family of small animals would be comfortable in the “tent” on my backside. So I decided to back to square 1, and measuring is the first step, while studying the duet trousers. Aha!! My thigh measurements are much smaller than my hip measurements on the size chart! Who knew that I apparently have skinny thighs??!! Lol!! Thanks so much for these details....I’m excited to go back to work on my muslin....💖💖
Just found your channel through Love Notions & so glad I did. I'm new to garment sewing & have been so nervous to try making pants. This was the BEST demonstration of taking pant measurements, thank you Kim! Really enjoying binge watching all your videos, lol! Off to watch part 2 & 3! Have a great day!
I think a good way to celebrate your 5k member mark would be a one-on-one private session with you. You are a great teacher and so many of us plus size seamstresses struggle in this area.
Oh I am gonna do this! I will make great fitting pants! I ordered the flexible ruler from your shop, thank you for that. I cannot wait for 2020 to be the year of the great fitting pants on my short, round body!
I love your videos. I have been sewing a couple of years and it seems whatever I make has fit issues. It can be so discouraging , especially when trying to learn at home. Thank you for your videos and great ideas.
I am happy to see this, since I retired my quest has been to sew a pair of pants that fit. I saw Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band on the wall behind you. If my kids think I’m not as chipper as I should be they always tell me to play cd. It always works!!!💐
Oh, Sgt. Pepper is always a mood boat for me, too :-). My hubby and I choose carefully from our record collection what we put there. We generally rotate them, but Sgt. Pepper seems to stay. On the wall to my right, there are framed 45’s of Let it Be and I Want to Hold Your Hand :-).
Wow love this video as I struggle with fit as I’m a pear shape. Just seeing you measure yourself helps a lot. Looking forward to seeing you the put these measurements on pattern as this is where I struggle. Stay safe and take care xx
There was a time when I could sew pants with no alterations. Those days are gone. Can't seem to get even a 'good' fit and I'm needing nice, simple instructions. The way you did the measurements (and so many) was wonderful. You haven't steered me wrong yet so I may just end up with a pattern with a 'great' fit. Thank you.
Thank you Kim for doing this one on pants making. I was just about to start on a pair of capris, but was dreading it. I don’t have success with pants. I will be making my muslin this week and hope to upload a picture to the FB group. I am Sooo excited!
I don't subscribe to sewing channels too often. but I love how clear your instructions are. FYI ... Karina's channel name is misspelled: It is "Lifting ..."
Are you going to use a knit or woven for the sew along. I want to do exactly what you are so it’s easier for me. I have the duet pattern and have never made pants before so this is perfect! Thank you
I’ve created a crotch curve ruler out of many thicknesses of foil, but sometimes I felt I bent it when I removed it. Then I went so far as to make a cardboard template cutout of this same shape. Hopefully I will have more confidence that this won’t be the case. I’m looking forward to this. I’ve made jeans by cutting my old jeans apart and using them as a pattern. But when it comes to buying a pattern and using it, I find I’m still in the dark
WOW!! Perfect timing. I just started Simplicity 8390. But can I used this pattern to follow along here in this series? OMG there are 5 videos in the series already? I'm so behind. Now I'm stressing. 😭😭😭
When you measure the crotch curve, what did the knotted rubber band do for you? Does it need to be where you expect the crotch intersection to go? Thanks for your help!
Thanks for the video. Do you have a tutorial on how to take the measurements and mark them to make a diy pattern (to be clear, I mean to make your own pattern from scratch and not altering an already made pattern.)
I have not yet filmed one like that. I may possibly do it in the future, though! Thank you for the suggestion! I definitely try to listen to viewers for what you all would like!
If you have a stretch woven that you can use, that would be best, however, you can use a regular woven, but just keep in mind that it will be a bit more forgiving and loose while wearing. So, if you are in between, size down. That’s always worked for me.
Hi Kim - I’m not quite clear on how this will work. I’ve taken all my measurements according to your instructions. Are we going to wait for another video regarding cutting out our favorite easy pattern, and how to tweak according to our measurements prior to sending you photos of fit issues?
For Inner seam I usually put the beginning of my tape to my ankle and go up to my crotch to get mine. Also, I've learnt that your waist measures to your elbow. Hope this helps and I think a giveaway would be good to celebrate 5000 likes.
In home ech, we were taught that your waist is where you bend. Bend sideways and mark the bend place on each side. I put my hands down on my hips so that method would not work.
There are about 8 million opinions of where your waist is. Where does elastic naturally migrate to on you? Where do you like your waistbands to sit? It’s very subjective. It’s not an exact science. You get to decide :-)
Elastic migrates to where you bend. Yes I tried it. Where you want your waist is probably the best place to put it. I tend to move a lot so it tends to relocate on me if I'm not careful. I want my cloths to not shift around on me and if they do I want them to shrug back into place. You are doing a good job of explaining fit. You even explained wearing ease which so many people forget. Keep up the good work.
This video is flour years old. And still a valuable series. Lots of new info in subsequent years and I’ve enjoyed them all. Thank you!

Thank you! I admire your goal! That is so great!
I really enjoyed your channel and looking forward to all of the demos. Thanks
what makes me the happiest is that I finally see someone who looks like me. as a mirror.... so I have a lot on this video series. Thx
"Making clothes that fit makes me look good," I like that! Thank you!
And it is so true!
Hello, this series is an absolute life saver! I'm fairly new to sewing and recently came across fit issues with a pant pattern that ended up looking horrendous on me. I'm excited to learn! And thank you so much for sharing your knowledge :)
I haven't done any sewing in quite a while- had surgery. Want to start with Tinley shorts Love Notions. Thank you for all your videos
Thank you!
Great tutorial!
Sewing pants for my body 50 years ago was so easy...those were the days!
With your techniques I will now be happy with the fit.
I just found your videos and I luv watching you are very informative and I am learning be things. Thank you and keep teaching. Welcome! Thanks for your kind words! That is an amazing story! Nothing like starting with the hardest thing first, LOL
So much useful information. I'm also very tilted and have a shorter front rise than the back. I have never been able to get pants to fit. Looking forward to this sew along.

Thank you, I’m 4’11 and I want to make the duet pants so I already know that I Need to shorten this pattern, this will be my first pair
I'm very excited about this. Sewing pants has always intimidated me.
Amazing video
Pants, my nemesis! I recently bought a super expensive system and I’ve struggled through five slopers, and I still hate the fit of my pants. They have all the same fitting issues as RTW pants, which is what I was hoping to resolve! Thanks for doing this series.
Love your tutorials - great to feel so supported with my sewing
You definitely are a beautiful example of "if you make clothes that fit, you will look good". You always look so nice in all your posts/videos!!!!
Thank you Kim love your tutorials! You are awesome 🙏🏾🙏🏾

Hi from England. Thank you very much for doing this much needed video. Waiting for the next one.
This is so timely I am making shorts and summer pants for myself now. You came up with a whole lot more measurements then I was using, thank you.
I think a good way to celebrate your 5k member mark would be a one-on-one private session with you. You are a great teacher and so many of us plus size seamstresses struggle in this area.
Thank you for this. I am saving this to use when have the time to make pants. They are on my to do list.

When you measure yourself how much do you add for ease ?
Great video on how to measure! Pictures are nice in the books but this was SO much better.
Thank you so much for this series! It is something I really need.
Would love a "Blooper video" to celebrate 🤗
Wow love this video as I struggle with fit as I’m a pear shape. Just seeing you measure yourself helps a lot. Looking forward to seeing you the put these measurements on pattern as this is where I struggle. Stay safe and take care xx
Thank you!
Oh yay! I have the Duet pattern and am excited to learn.
AWESOME! This is just what I need to learn.

I’ve been waiting for something to help me make pants 👖!
Hi Dorothy looking forward to seeing my first pair of trousers
Looking forward to perfecting the fit issues I experience. You are so right about fit making you look good or droopy.
Wow this is so funny I was just thinking you and Karina should do a team video just before you mentioned her lol
Love this....planning to make some pants because it's getting harder to find pants that fit. Thank you so much!!
thank u Kim-this sounds so good. very excited.
I don't subscribe to sewing channels too often. but I love how clear your instructions are. FYI ... Karina's channel name is misspelled: It is "Lifting ..."
I am hopeful to get some pants that fit. thanks
Looking forward to this series. Will you be sharing how to grade up past the pattern size at all? Thank you for doing this series.
Very helpful video. Thank you🌹
Great series Kim! I am really looking forward to this 👍❤️
Thank you! I am looking forward to sewing a pair or two of capris with side zippers once I get my measurements.
Are you going to use a knit or woven for the sew along. I want to do exactly what you are so it’s easier for me. I have the duet pattern and have never made pants before so this is perfect! Thank you

Yes i have pattern for duets. Planning to participate 👍
Love your Amazon shop
And, your demystify fit is genius . Love Karina roo
Where do you measure for inseam?
Perfect 👍👍👍👍💚💚💚
Hi, I am loving your pants series. Thank you. Can you please explain what is the difference between crotch length, crotch depth and rise?
I have exactly the same problem as you with my crotch. So looking forward to learning how to adjust a pattern.
When you measure the crotch curve, what did the knotted rubber band do for you? Does it need to be where you expect the crotch intersection to go? Thanks for your help!
Exactly. I put that where the intersection should go. That way, you can measure the front and back rise separately.
@@dorothysdaughtersews You're welcome, and thank you for a timely response.
If I want to use a stretch woven does it matter what I use for my muslin? Just regular woven would be okay? Sure appreciate you doing this series!

"Flexible ruler" is pricey. Garden centers have the same foam covered wire, for tying plant vines.
What dress form cover are you using?
I bought it on Amazon. It’s just a stretchy cover. They sell a bunch of colors
Hi Kim - I’m not quite clear on how this will work. I’ve taken all my measurements according to your instructions. Are we going to wait for another video regarding cutting out our favorite easy pattern, and how to tweak according to our measurements prior to sending you photos of fit issues?
Yes. I will be posting soon- most likely tomorrow.
Thank you!!!!😘😘😘😘
I would also add that if you plan to use a stretch woven for your pants, your muslin should have the same stretch too.
For Inner seam I usually put the beginning of my tape to my ankle and go up to my crotch to get mine. Also, I've learnt that your waist measures to your elbow. Hope this helps and I think a giveaway would be good to celebrate 5000 likes.
I would to see how to finish seams on women’s without a serger
Deborah Pallach An overedge foot and a zigzag stitch on your sewing machine will do just that. I used to do mine this way before I bought a serger.

You can also use folded baco foil to measure the crotch
