Chess960 Titled Arena ft. Magnus Carlsen as DrNykterstein | February 2019

- This is a 3-hour bullet chess tournament, Chess960 Titled Arena, I provided commentary on while specifically observing World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen compete. Time controls are 2 minutes with a 1 second increment. This was the 1st titled arena lichess held with the variant chess960, or fischer random chess. It's played just like regular chess with the only difference being that the pieces on ranks 1 and 8 have been randomized. I livestreamed this event at twitch.tv/ChessNetwork. The Chess960 Titled Arena is held for titled chess players only, namely Grandmasters, International Masters, FIDE Masters, National Masters etc... Magnus Carlsen played under the account "DrNykterstein". This was the 12th "Titled Arena" held by lichess.org. Its $1,000 prize pool goes to the top 5 players, with 1st - $500, 2nd - $250, 3rd - $125, 4th - $75, and 5th - $50. This tournament was played on February 23rd, 2019.
I'm a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly. 3 hours of Carlsen gameplay and Jerry commentary. I love life.

@@MrHibbsComedy Magnus is leaf.
Jerry, just so you know, the way you feel about Carlsen at the beginning, is the way we feel about you.
pretty accurate
Couldn't have said it better
Hope he sees this bro

This is my first RUclips comment in many years watching because I want you to know that you are a great chess coach. If it's your series for beginners like me or this very advanced commentary of bullet 960 games, you offer great content that takes up much of my free time. Especially your standard games help me tremendeously at improving my own chess.
Also, you are the top reason why I myself became a huge chess enthusiast just like you come across as one, even though I of course am much less skillful. I love to hear you celebrate the game, and I'd love to play you someday, though it would likely waste your time :D Thank you very much.
good comment
Jerry, good job on having this video as 5th most viewed chess960 video!
At 50:45, Ng3+ doesn't work because after hxg3, fxg3, white has one move that works and that's Qe3.
After Qe3, Qh4+, Kg1, Qh2+, Kf1, then Qh1 isn't checkmate because of Qg1. If the white queen did not have access to the e3 square, Ng3+ would work
Pretty much admirable that they did see that in a matter of seconds
It is though there at 50:52 !
The best chess commentator ever
Wow chess 960 takes a lot more skill and critical positional thinking. Absolutely in love with this showcase. I see why Fischer was all about his random. This is definitely a way to spice up the chess board.
Jerry has done more for chess than many world champions
It's true, Jerry has made more RUclips videos than Capablanca, Alekhine, and Lasker COMBINED!

@@MrJerryHsu For the worst .
It took me a week to watch the whole video. Thx Jerry, I love your commentary. 960 has come alive for me.
Hey Jerry, why have you stopped uploading videos of your game play? Particularly standard games? I used to love those slower games where I could hear your thought process. I also see that you're uploading less frequently. Hope you're o.k. Keep well.
This is more entertaining than standard chess. More imbalances, sharp positions and creative openings. Great commentating as always.
Your videos have become such an amazing resource for studying chess! Thank you!!
Chess 960 is not based on theories and memorizations. Winning this title proves that Magnus is a genius and deserves to be the world number one in Chess.
Mate, this doesn't prove anything he hasn't proven. Magnus is already reigning world champ in Chess 960 (unofficial title) from when he took it from Nakamura a couple years ago.
Agreed, Chess960 is all about ability. The most naturally talented player should rise to the top.
@@Vedioviswritingservice I always felt that way about maps in video games. Like it would be more a test of skill if maps were randomized instead of ones players have memorised. Unfortunately, they'd probably be really bad maps too.
@@KedViper game in mind?
This is exciting. Brings out the true strength of each titled player
Eric Rosen's game at 45:31 :)
Rubberduck 😍
@@eric-rosen Well played, Eric :)
Eric goes 2-1 with MC
The only one who defeated him. Carlsen won 20 drew 2 and lost to Eric (^o^)
@@DrunkMelon He lost to MeneerMandje and Night-King96 too.
Epic your a legend Jerry, thanks for not selling out. God loves you
11:40 blunders and exchange and a piece, doesn't have any pieces above the 7th rank besides queen to whites very active pieces. Also has a time disadvantage of 18:9 on INCREMENT.
Magnus teach me your ways
Chess960 certainly leads to some interesting games. The games are often unique. It really feels like you just need to know how to "play chess".
Carlsen is so insane at the middle game/end games. Crazy how he almost came back from being down the queen O.o
Then actually came back from being down the exchange from a knight for rook trade...
And to add the frosting to the cake, he played this entire tournament on phone
Thanks for this great video! While chess960 won't ever be a regular event I do hope Lichess at least make it an yearly event. It is so much fun to watch chess without almost zero opening theory.
What a perfect sunday this turned out to be! Always perfect commentary as usual
Am I the only one that notices how genuinely happy Jerry sounds in this video?
The thing that is so special about this video is that you get a lot of reasonable quality Chess960 games by Magnus that are instructive even at the bullet time control. Take just slightly lesser players (even Nakamura) and you can visibly see the quality of the games drop at the blitz speed.
3:18 what a long way to the castle lol
We love the 960!!! Thanks again, Jerry.
Hey, just wanted to let you know that I absolutely love your commentating and all the effort you are putting in these videos/stream. They are really fun and entertaining to watch. Keep up the good work!

I'm sure you are worthy to be a strong gm. Your commentary is great.
Just came home... what a treat to have a Jerry commentary video to watch while having dinner 😍
thats big ass dinner eating for 3 hours
Jerry, you made a comment in game 2 about Former Player being a “seasoned 960 player.” And he was up a rook against Magnus! Are there any dedicated 960 players that might be better than Magnus at 960?
No. Carlsen is undisputed in shorter time formats (blitz/bullet) and the current world champ in 960 (un-official title).
The difference between regular chess and chess960 isn't that great. A seasoned 960 player may have an advantage in the opening but the middle game and endgames are still just regular chess.
They need to somehow implement Chess960 as some sort of official tie-breaker. Chess960 proves your strength as a player as oppose to memorizing theory and book, just my two cents.
Caruana would not agree to this
Memorizing theory and book is also proving your strength as a player, just not in the intuitive way. "Strength" is built up on a lot of aspects
@@Silvergrooves42 I should have worded it a different way, my bad. Yes , memorizing theory and book is essential to being a good chess player and so is blitz and rapid. But blitz and rapid is branched off of theory and book also. My point is that Chess960 does away with book and theory and just gets to the point, which I think would be a wonderful addition to the current state of competitive chess. Like I said previous, maybe as some sort of tie breaker.. or even as its own stand alone thing.
44:40 That was sneaky :)
Those 3 hours Flew By SO FAST!!! (probably because I fast forwarded to the 2:30:00 mark)
Jerry's excitement on the games brighten them so much.
Epic turnaround match!!! Dr Nykterstein vs FM Alion01. My favourite until this time. 2:05:48 - 2:12:57. Must watch!!! Magnus' opponent played really well, especially during midgame, but the endgame was epic! Magnus avoided draw by repitition when he was down a piece!! LOL
It was insane 😍😍
I love how excited Jerry is during that game
Gm Bassim Amin hold third , he is currently the strongest gm in Africa , and 30th all over the world, greetings man
2:11:08 carlsen in action
That second game against Night-King showed incredible understanding of endgame positions, he traded down to the knight ending surely realising that he had the capability to make passed pawns on both sides of the board, so that the knight couldn't defend both at once
What a treat. Thank you sir.
The game starting at 2:05:37 and definitely the game after that were highlights for me.
Couldn't agree more. Also, nice profile picture, my favorite album ever :)

At 23:36, black resigns because Carlsen is picking up a piece. He's attacking both the bishop on a1 and the knight on g6. If black plays nxh4, white captures back bxh4+ with check, giving white the extra tempo to pick up the bishop on a1.

3:15 That castle got me. Imagine making that move in a classical game.
Some of these faster ones come so surprisingly and there are no weaklings like me in this tournament.

2:33:41 you turned into the guy who commentates (excellent, finish him, etc.) during Mortal Kombat matches. Thanks for the vids Jerry.

The world champ goes down a queen at move 5 (33:00) but can he fight on with R+P verses a Queen? Where else but Chess960? Great commentary Jerry you are so quick and you understand Fischer Random Chess too.
Great commentary. Loved it!
This was heartbreaking in so many ways...
2:41 game, he left nightking with a knight & a king.. lol
You should edit: Its actually at 02:40:53 (i.e. 2 hours 40 minutes in - not just 2 minutes). But you're right. Good catch. And epic funny. Only Magnus......

Hey Jerry, Would be cool to see another CrazyHouse tournament.
Why do some players have 5 points? I thought a player couldn't berserk in games with increment.
In this you can berserk but you lose your increment while your opponent keeps theirs. Tough, even for the slippery one.
At 24:39 the bishop is lost because it has no safe square so Carlsen is up a full piece, thus the resignation.
I think Carlsen switched from cell phone to PC on that long pause.
Thanks Jerry!
Your voice is so soothing
Why is the layout all different?
Jerry keeps counting material imbalances by looking at the whole board. Does he not know this information is displayed next to the clocks?
Carlsen is a demigod of chess.I would sell my soul to see a tournament between Morphy,Capablanca,Karpov,Kasparov and Carlsen...and the winner gets to play AlphaZero
And the winner gets to go to Alpha Centauri
Playing on lichess on the phone is actually great as long as the connection is good. It feels faster to just tap the screen instead of moving my mouse.
If you have ever played bullet you should know the mause is more precise and a lot faster that is why people play more with a mouse
@@erandmyftari8729 I actually played bullet quite often on Lichess, and I almost always play on phone. Based on my experience, it is faster than using a mouse.
jeez how many games started with the queen in the corner
03:28 and now Petrosian, yeah man I remember that lesson, thanks.
Hi I am curious because i saw that you begin this channel 11 years ago after how much time you start making money and now if you make enough alone without job?:)
Does anyone know if Magnus streamed this tournament himself? Like, seeing and hearing him commentate his own moves? I know he's done it on a few tournies in the past, but can't find this one.
Hm... just noticed it tells you when a player is streaming, so I guess not...
Wow. Wonderful tactic missed by wizard98 at 2:16:31
Lol
After Qa5?
@@totalhysteria No, on Magnus' move. Shame it wasn't his turn.
I wonder who he is, Artemiev? I think Night-King96 was Rapport.
King Of The Hill is a fun variant.
Hey Jerry. The bass in your voice is very loud in your recent videos. I have to turn down the volume on the subwoofer every time I watch your videos nowadays, which is kind of annoying. Maybe you can fix this with some simple EQ or by speaking a few cm further away from the mic if it has a proximity effect (most directional mics do). Great content as always! /Sound engineer & longtime fan
Check out proximity effect here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proximity_effect_(audio)
Also, if you can vary the directional pattern of the microphone, that's great. The proximity effect is the strongest on figure-8 microphones, less strong on cardioids (looks like a bum) and omnidirectional (looks like an O) microphones don’t have any proximity effect at all.
Does anybody know how Jerry looks like? What is his surname?
Plot twist: Carlsen was on the toilet the entire time!
What does "with fire" mean?
If you win two games in a row, you begin to gain 4 points for each consecutive win instead of the usual 2. This gives you a little fire icon next to your name and continues until you lose or draw a game.
*hes too good.*
Thank for the coverage here of some awesome games 2:19:30, "what game isn't cool"? indeed, very cool! He wants the best, he's got the best -- mate vs the Wizard! Lol.
