      @@HarveyMcCloud I will point out the whole "participation trophy" thing didn't come because of kids lack of confidence, it largely came out about because of parents pushing their kids into sports against their own will(largely due to wanting to relive their own failed sports dreams)and after their kids couldn't cut it the parents demanded their kid get SOME kind of recognition and so those participation trophies/medals were essentially created by schools to shut the parents up so they'd quit bugging them. I never knew any kid that actually liked those things.

    The pork factory and Hank pet sitting a cat are other honorable mentions I add. Cotton is another mention. His death that far in the series and flushing his ashes being a middle finger to continuity when he fought for a veterans grave.

  • @chaoticneutral7976
    @chaoticneutral7976 2 года назад +31

    I think "Church Hopping" absolutely deserves to be on here at least as an honorable mention. This is a prime example of Hank getting his way because he's the protagonist even when he's in the wrong or being an awful person. The entire conflict stems from the fact that Bobby forgot to set the clocks back for Daylight Savings and they show up late to church where their "usual" seats have been taken. Mind you this family has a baby with them and yet Hank still tries to tell them to move somewhere else. When he complains to the pastor about it she rightfully tells him there's no assigned seats and to get over it.
    So how does this episode end? He convinces the family that "took" his seats to attend the Megachurch he and his family attended for a bit until it started to occupy too much of their time and blackmails the pastor that unless his family doesn't have that pew reserved specifically for them he will tell all the loyal church goers to attend the Megachurch instead. What an entitled jerk.
    The worst part is that we're supposed to sympathize with Hank acting so spoiled over a damn seat. He feels somewhat ooc and it's another episode that messes with continuity because we've clearly seen the Hills sit at different pews before in previous episodes despite him saying they've sat at that exact spot for 12 years. This entire conflict would have been over had Hank and his family simply went to church earlier the next time around. And we're supposed to feel good when Hank pretty much threatens the small time pastor?
    The redeeming qualities of this one are that at least the montage of the Hills looking for a new church is hilarious and it does capture the feel of a Megachurch. Not to mention the Megachurch people seemed like decent people and I appreciate that it's pastor basically begged Hank to go back to his old church because he was so fed up with Peggy. Otherwise, a an easy skip-it episode.

    • @HarveyMcCloud
      @HarveyMcCloud  2 года назад +11

      That entire problem could've been avoided if Hank and family just got to church earlier lol

    • @thegoldfly1
      @thegoldfly1 Год назад +6

      Honestly I thought Reverend Stroop was just as bad. She was so afraid of losing more people she turned the last few pews in to a smoking section according to Dale. She used the Church sign to be just as petty with the "there's no assigned seating in Heaven". I mean that episode just showed how terrible most of them were. Like you said the new pastor, partly because he couldn't stand Peggy, was the best one there. Oh I think his point about why he made the Church he did would have still held and would have still explained it to Hank like that, but yeah he really wanted to get rid of her(and to be fair to him it was because she didn't fit).

      @@HarveyMcCloud Bobby Goes Nuts definitely should've been on this list over the Enrique episode IMO, Hank was an inconsiderate jackass the whole time with him stupidly whining over Bobby's method of defending himself against bullies because it's not "manly" enough and then basically goads Bobby into fighting him because he wants Bobby to "fight fair" against the bullies(who will not do the same for him which Hank is too dense and naive to realize)and Bobby reflexively hits Hank in the crotch and Bobby gets grounded basically because Hank was being an inconsiderate jackass and a bit of a bully himself and Peggy is then treated as being in the right for siding with Hank, also there's the totally unrealistic bit where Peggy does not react at all to getting kicked in the crotch, sure it might not hurt as much as it does for a guy getting kicked there but it still hurts and for a show that normally prides itself on realism that moment sticks out like a sore thumb. If I was Bobby I would've just played my gameboy up in my room where his parents couldn't see.

    Another problem in "life a loser's manual" peggy decides not to tell luanne about her father at the end in order to protect her, the problem with this plan is since her dad is now in prison for life that means he will eventually die in prison and that is something she cant cover up by saying "oh he died on the oil rig" the prison would contact both peggy and luanne and she would learn the turth eventually and would hurt even worse than just ripping the band aid off.

    For the “Untitled black McCormick Project” episode, Dale was an asshole for getting John Redcorn to sleep with the woman Bill was dating just so Bill couldn’t raise his (but actually John Redcorn’s) child. But in the end, it was a bit of an unintended service to Bill since it didn’t take much for her to cheat, and he could’ve gone on to marry her & ended up in denial about her actions like Dale. It was better to cut her off early. But the fact that Dale tells John Redcorn that he has another child, but his first thought isn’t to try to be a father to her, he just wanted to sleep with his ex, messing up another man’s relationship.

    What made the early episodes so good was the blend of realism and exaggerated parody of real world situations. I had no idea a new writer came in at season 7 and that explains so much. It went from being a grounded show to pretty insane nightmare episodes where the side characters are suddenly mindless zombies turning on people for literally no reason. Bill and Peggy both go bat-shit crazy and its hard to even see them as characters anymore. At least Manic Kahn was a good sendoff, but I found myself skipping a lot of late season episodes.

    • @HarveyMcCloud

      Very much so. I was actually watching the tornado episode last night with my husband he pointed out how different the humor was in earlier seasons. It happens a lot with shows that go on for a long time and onboard new writers while the core writers leave to other shows. There are some gems in the later seasons, some that surprisingly hold up even today (the MySpace episode in particular calling out how creepy it is to have your personal life so public), but the latter seasons are not nearly as good. I find myself disinterested in later season episodes as well.

    Some of the positives I would give to “New Cowboy on the Block” is one of the rare moments where we see Hank and Khan join forces. Khan being horrified at Hank being punched by Big Willie Lane and a nice moment at the end with Khan saying thank you to Hank and passing him a beer.
    The biggest highlight of the episode was when Khan called his father in law to hire a hit man to kill Big Willie Lane and throwing in Dale as a bonus. Damn Khan.
    Some episodes I remembered not at all liking was when Bobby dressed up as Cupid to win back Connie. The whole thing was feeling second hand embarrassment for Bobby making a fool of himself and jeopardizing his friendship with his two best friends.
    The other one being the magician episode where Hank was being unreasonably petty and spiteful the whole episode.

    • @balanc-joy9187

      You are _not_ alone on not liking "I'm With Cupid" I personally like it, but I have heard others take issue with it.
      I have also heard others not like the magician episode "Sleight of Hank", and I actually agree on that one. The only things I like about it are Hank's increasingly bizarre "speculations" on how the trick worked, and how the magician superbly got out of Hank's attempt to use Luanne to figure out the trick. Other than those parts though, it is a very hard episode to watch.

    I can understand why it would be frustrating to watch Peggy Makes the Big Leagues. Though it never frustrated me personally, because despite my lack of knowledge on how highschool players manage to work through their grades. I assumed it was a commentary on that, namely that in school if your good enough in football that you dont need to be good at the actual work. More or less their skill compensate their lack of work ethic off the field. And in this case he was the star player, and as you mentioned earlier football fans can be very aggressive and the teachers in that episode felt more like a comedic extreme. Most of the time when Peggy is doing what she thinks is right, she tends to go to extremes but in this case, her genuine want for David to get a passing grade and not coast solely on his football ability. But again I never thought to much about that episode because it seemed to be too ridiculous but funny enough for a lot of bits in it. And it honestly the only pick on your list I dont agree with but I agree with your points none the less.

    Bobby Goes Nuts is a hilarious episode, but the ending makes no sense. Bobby kicks Peggy in the crotch and she feels no pain because "women do not have testicles". It doesn't matter what you've got between your legs - getting kicked anywhere hurts!
    It would've been more on-brand for Peggy if she pretended she wasn't in pain and once Bobby was out of sight, she limped back to the house in agony - similar to an earlier episode where she hurt her groin trying to lift Bobby in a fireman's carry.

      That was a retcon. Originally the oil rig was just an oil rig that Luanne's dad was hiding on until Leanne died. As mentioned in this video, Luanne's dad being a jailbird was something made up just for that episode and was never the writer's intention before that.

    The ones I hated the most were Hank's Bully (due to how realistic it was, and how constricting the use of johnny law was, all because Hank dared to not tolerate some new kid trespassing on his property and trying to destroy his house for shits and giggles) and Mrs. Wakefield (one of my nightmares is home invasion, and I'm pretty sure I'd get a heart attack screaming at my friends and family if they went 'how dare you not let this person you don't know in your house.')
    What particularly gets me about Hank's Bully is that the end of the episode is not going to be that simple. That kid will need *years* of conditioning before he can be let out to society. He needs years to unlearn behavior that, were he to try it to the wrong person, would get him shot. (Because, there are *definitely* people who will shoot you to death for walking onto their grass, they'll also shoot you for, I dunno, sticking a hose through their mail slot or stealing, or vandalizing.)

Bobby was, by my recollection a quirky but mostly "typical" boy, and Luanne wasn't quite brain-dead stupid like she became later, but still naive and short-sighted, and a bit too prone to simple emotion-based behavior and decisions. I didn't see anything out of character with them at all in that episode.

    Regarding the lack of passports in the Lupe episode, they weren’t necessary back when it aired.
    Before 9/11, Americans could pretty much just waltz right into Canada or Mexico if it was only for a short stay. Even now, there are special cards you can get that allow you to go to Mexico or Canada without getting a full passport and visa. I live in an Arizona border town, and a lot of people I know have them. I don’t know the specifics of a situation like that (it still DOES seem a bit farfetched), but the lack of passports isn’t unrealistic per se.

    Good list. To me, the worst episode is Death picks Cotton, because of the wasted potential. The main plot of KOTH is Hank tryng to create a bond with Bobby and become the father that Cotton never was while raising Hank. Since the first episode and the first season Cotton has been a mentioned and relevant character because of the main plot. I still feel like the 8th season is great, after that the show kinda felt off, i guess the writing changes are inevitable for such long running shows. But, a finale season where Bobby is turning into a rebel kid, an arc with Cotton's health declining due to a disease or an accident, and eventually dying, would have worked perfectly. Cotton is dying and before that he kinda try to help Hank to make Bobby behave again well, with discipline, Hank have the last meaningfull moment with his father, he realizez how to love Bobby just like Cotton love Bobby, and then, he figure it with Bobby and they share a hobby together, after they start doing the list Cotton had as his will, that's why i think they could have done.
