The sad and probably true answer based on what we know about the characters: Bill probably moves them from his mailbox to Hank's in a vague hope he'll pay one or two.
Is the joke that it sounds like he’s getting a lot of bills when he’s actually saying Bill’s (mail), or is it that they’re actually all bills for Bill?
Whenever Peggy says "I read somewhere", I can't help imagine some kind of combination of Reader's Digest and "Now!" magazine being hoarded in the basement for when Peggy needs a "fact".
Honestly, when I was a kid, I never got into KotH like I have as of recently, but I always remember being mesmerized by it when it would come on TV at the community center I frequented. Something about it always captivated me.
I grew up in the era of Simpsons but honestly never liked it. The way Homer treated his son as a running gag turned me off completely. The fun thing about Hank and Bobby’s relationship is that Hank LOVES his son and Bobby LOVES his dad. They just don’t always see eye to eye but when Hank tries to work it out with Bobby, he tries to talk to Bobby with utmost respect. They learn from each other, and that is way more engaging than something as played out like Simpsons. Then again, maybe my tastes are weird. Never cared for South Park, Simpsons, Family Guy, or shows like them. But King of the Hill always fascinated me.
I am 38 years old and had some of the same experiences. I didn't "get it" till I was an adult, around 2005-2006. Ever since then, I've been hooked. It is certainly the most authentic, well-written and clever of the "cartoon" families. It's also one of the smartest comedies of all I time I believe. I have watched it relentlessly on repeat through various means and methods to this day, I could probably quote just about every episode, but to this day, once in awhile, I will still catch something funny that I didn't catch before. It is subtle at times, yes, but if you know the characters, it is just about the funniest show ever. I feel like people that "get" King of the Hill are just a little bit smarter than fans of other TV shows, if that makes sense. I think the one thing that stands out in King of the Hill is that the father is portrayed as the smartest/most common sense person on the show. Every other TV family, especially the cartoon families, portray the father as a bumbling idiot, and I don't care for that. A lot that's wrong with society today is due to the denigration of the role of the father in family life, but Hank is always the most sensible person in any room he's in.
When King of the HIll first started, I figured it'd go like all the other prime time cartoons...short and sweet (like Capitol Critters or Family Dog). It almost seemed like prime time cartoons besides the Simpsons were just destined to fail. I'm sure glad I was wrong about King of the Hill!

If I'm not mistaken, the cinematography of King of the Hill requires the shot to be physically feasible with a hypothetical camera, except for dream and psychedelic sequences of course. The characters get into wild but never fantastical scenarios.
I actually really related to the show as a kid in the 90s. The trick or treat episode comes to mind. See if you liked Pokemon, Doom, or Harry Potter in the 90s; some folks thought it would make you satanic. King of the hill pointed out how ridiculous that was.
@@cangrejopendejo4909 No, it was actually pretty common. Satanic panic is very well documented. Every thing from the Columbine kids to Marilyn Manson was blamed on Satanic influences.
@@vcrbetamax Come on. I was a kid back then, I remember. There's some truth to what you're saying, but to say it was pretty common is just not true. I definitely don't remember anyone actually thinking Pokemon was Satanic, and I was really into Pokemon when it came out.. I remember all the drama over Marilyn Manson and Eminem over Columbine, and that was more about their violent lyrics than it was about Satanism. Bill O'Reilly (the original male Karen) interviewed Manson back then, and even he didn't fixate on the Satanic stuff.
@@cangrejopendejo4909 Um... okay. Look man, I don't want to argue. I saw A LOT of it. I don't know where you lived but I remember reading an electronic gaming monthly where evangelicals burned a pikachu doll. I remember one of the girls in my class couldn't watch Harry Potter with the rest of us when the movie came out because it has witches. Maybe not "SATANIC" per say. But you damn well know what I'm talking about and yes it was pretty common.
Haha same here I couldnt appreciate this show as a kid, as an adult I can relate so much and love it. There is a bit of a tenderness to it too and now its one of my favorite shows to binge watch to keep me from being homesick overseas. It relaxes me in a strange way.
I didn't start watching it until I was 9. Little me didn't appreciate it either. It's now my favorite adult cartoon. Either Koth or Beavis and Butthead.
21:20 That's also something live-action shows used to do back in the 80s and 90s. Usually after one of those insipid "Very Special" episodes, they'd bring out the cast to be like "We had some laughs tonight, but if you or someone you love is addicted to crack, call this number please." And then you'd call the number and it was just some stupid rehab shit instead of a guy who can score you more crack like you hoped. It was misleading.
The brilliance of Mike Judge is the conservatives learning from the liberals and liberals learning from the conservatives. The liberals need to be heard because new ideas can be corrective when the old rules become oppressive to a changing society and the conservatives need to be heard because we need to remember the lessons learned often by blood and copper to not undergo the same suffering just to find what was already found.
I might be a Californian born and raised (BWAAAAAH!) and we might be Oriental, but my family feels pretty American and I can relate to King of the Hill. I will admit that I was a little bit like Bobby when I was 8 until about 14. My dad was so much like Hank Hill that he even dressed like him and voted for Bush... Also, I grew up listening to Willie Nelson as my dad was a fan, following him from country, to country western to adult contemporary. I really do appreciate this show for all the reasons mentioned in this video but especially because it wasn't partisan.
I’ve lived in Texas my whole life. Around the time the show closed out I was probably 14-15. It was something cute and fun to watch but nothing exceptional. I just recently went through the whole show 10 years later. And there were so many moments that truly captured Southern mentality. Seriously so well written as a show. I’d love a sequel taking place in now times. Maybe following Bobby as the man of the house trying to raise GH.
King of the hill is one of those shows that you couldn’t get into as a child, but then growing up to love it with its grounded humour as an adult, Wish it came back but it probably ended on a good note
Honestly I was one of those kids that really liked king of the hill I always got excited to see it on tv and I would always try to the find the channel that would be airing on, idk why I just really liked it and I still do I love it in fact. I always rewatch it basically daily now ,King of the hill will be a big part of memories for a life time
My ex-boyfriend/closest friend died last year and the Buckley’s angel episode helped me while grieving. He was only 31 and it’s so lonely going through it because most young people can’t relate. Funny to relate to a cartoon- but it touched my heart. I cry nearly every time I hear “Life in a Northern Town” now. It’s a beautiful episode.
You don't HAVE to have been from a rural, small town kinda place to appreciate King of the Hill, but I think it helps. Hank and the guys remind me of SO MANY middle-aged adults I knew when I was a kid in rural Michigan. No interests beyond their lawns and what route they take to work. Anything beyond the world of like 1972 just seems stupid and not worth learning to them. I made sushi to bring to Christmas once a couple years ago for appetizers, and half my uncles were like five-year-olds afraid to try it. Because it's like "This is a meat other than steak and vegetables other than potatoes! I'm not eating this!" It wasn't even raw sushi! It was just California rolls and some vegetarian rolls. To the credit of everyone else, it was a big hit overall, but it was still like "Come on, you're 60 years old and acting like a toddler!"
Yeah being from the UP, some of the jokes from Trailer Park Boys, Letterkenny and Koth don't land because they aren't even absurd enough to be funny, just business as usual. Like Ricky's car isn't even far off from some of the trucks around my house lmao
I'm from Michigan as well and grew up in the 90s. This show was a satire of my dad and all his friends to a T. I think it does speak a bit more to rural americans who know these characters in real life.
@@boppe2235 Oh, I love Letterkenny. It's so much like the little town I grew up in. We got little roadside produce stands like that everywhere, there's an Amish community nearby, their farm reminds me of my aunt and uncle's house and a few other friends. And now Shoresy is set in a city of about 100k, just like where I live NOW.
As someone that grew up in the deep south i can tell ya we love king of the hill. Hank isnt viewed as satire he is viewed as being an exaggeration of what we all feel and is extremely relatable and lovable. Cotton is by far the best damn character though
I didn't understand or like king of the hill when I was younger. It just seemed dry and awkward. Looking back now though I can see where its genius was.
I’m so glad you ended this video on the episode where Bobby joins the meat-grading team. I know there were episodes that aired after it but to me that last scene with Hank & Bobby grilling together is the closest thing we’ll ever see to a long-running series “sticking the landing”.
@@billriddle9215 that episode was dark as night and a good one overall; but my god what a terrible “finale”. I choose to think this is one of those times Fox messed up the order of airing (ie what they did with Futurama S4) Idc. The canonical finale of the show is Hank & Bobby grilling steaks, I tell ya hwat 😂
@@brucemorris3830 Actually that's correct. Hank and Bobby grilling was the intended series finale and meant to be aired last, but Fox forgot to air about 4 episodes and just dumped them after "To Sirloin With Love," but for all intents and purposes, it's the *true* finale.
On the setting, it's really strange how similar parts of the Midwest are to King of the Hill's depiction of Texas. I agree that picking Texas specifically was bold, but I think it's a lot more relatable to a large portion of the US than one would think.
I am a conservative that grew up in a very Hill-like culture. I laughed at and with the Hill's. I appreciate the show and hope it showed people in other cultures that we all have a lot in common.
I was born and raised in Texas and we did this same thing at my high school, where the football players dressed as cheerleaders and vice versa. Good ol Texas.
one thing about KOTH that I dont think is appreciated enough is how the design of the characters is made in a way that doesn't look cartoonish. It manages to be simplistic without being overly realistic that gives it a much more grounded feel.
As someone who grew up in a small town in the midwest, this show reminds me of so many people and situations I knew/know in real life. Probably one of the best and most accurate (and fair minded) portraits of middle america in pop culture. Hank may be a stick in the mud, but he's ultimately a good guy and often, in his own way, has a point,
_"I'm your worst nightmare!_ I have a 3-line phone and *NOTHING* to do with my time!" Has to be my favorite line out of the show! And the people applauding around him ships it, lmao
The King of the Hill writers are in Cartoon Wars pt 2 because they sent flowers to the South Park staff after the first episode of Cartoon Wars aired. They HATED having to share a programming bloc with Family Guy.

When religion knew kids were not going to give a shit about their stories when you can have lots of fun with better stuff.
Maybe 3 or 4 of the most religious people you could find actually thought those things were Satanic.
AZULAPRO it does the same to me and when I want to laugh I watch season 1, I love king of the hill
I didn't start watching it until I was 9. Little me didn't appreciate it either. It's now my favorite adult cartoon. Either Koth or Beavis and Butthead.
I remember when I was like 7, my mom watched this. I’m 20 now n damn I miss this show
Military overseas? Semper Fi USMC here and I understand. Simpson's watcher as a kid, now I appreciate KOTH as an adult with conservative views.
21:20 That's also something live-action shows used to do back in the 80s and 90s.
Usually after one of those insipid "Very Special" episodes, they'd bring out the cast to be like "We had some laughs tonight, but if you or someone you love is addicted to crack, call this number please."
And then you'd call the number and it was just some stupid rehab shit instead of a guy who can score you more crack like you hoped. It was misleading.
nrrork 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Brilliant.
Had us in the first half not gonna lie
You got any “bait” Jack?
The brilliance of Mike Judge is the conservatives learning from the liberals and liberals learning from the conservatives. The liberals need to be heard because new ideas can be corrective when the old rules become oppressive to a changing society and the conservatives need to be heard because we need to remember the lessons learned often by blood and copper to not undergo the same suffering just to find what was already found.
Monarchy gang rise up
THANK YOU
Exactly! Thank you for sharing such a mature & wise statement. I'm surprised it isn't more obvious with it being so logical & straightforward.
im a leftist but this comment is so sweet and heartworming
"the old rules become oppressive to a changing society"
Oppressive? Pussy.
So are you Chinese or Japanese?
The amount of good country music in the background really made this video way more enjoyable than it should be enjoyed
Seriously! Hank, Patsy Cline, all amazing choices
@@Unfamiliar_Fruit Don't forget about Merle Haggard
I was convinced it was the New Vegas soundtrack in the first half
It’s not county, but they also had SRV tunes on the show as well which I really loved. That’s REAL Texas Rock Blues for ya!!
It was like having K Rose on in the background! 🌹
I like that idea a lot!
King of the hill is one of those shows that you couldn’t get into as a child, but then growing up to love it with its grounded humour as an adult,
Wish it came back but it probably ended on a good note
Honestly I was one of those kids that really liked king of the hill I always got excited to see it on tv and I would always try to the find the channel that would be airing on, idk why I just really liked it and I still do I love it in fact. I always rewatch it basically daily now ,King of the hill will be a big part of memories for a life time
Same, it was favorite on adult swim
I could relate to both Bobby and Hank.
I liked it when i was a kid, now i absolutly love it though might be my favorite show of all time at this point.
The episodes with Buckley's death damn near had me in tears.
I'm not eating this!"
It wasn't even raw sushi! It was just California rolls and some vegetarian rolls.
To the credit of everyone else, it was a big hit overall, but it was still like "Come on, you're 60 years old and acting like a toddler!"
Small town Texas is all I’ve ever known- they really did it justice.
Yeah being from the UP, some of the jokes from Trailer Park Boys, Letterkenny and Koth don't land because they aren't even absurd enough to be funny, just business as usual. Like Ricky's car isn't even far off from some of the trucks around my house lmao
@@boppe2235 That is the funny part to me. Reality is hilarious. You don't need to have a extended 20 minute fight with a giant chicken to be humorous.
3:20 You left out when Hank says, "Nudity!" And throws the troll into a box. It's maybe the funniest moment in the series.
I didn't understand or like king of the hill when I was younger. It just seemed dry and awkward. Looking back now though I can see where its genius was.
I love King of the Hill more than any other “adult” shows. Including The Simpsons.
I’m so glad you ended this video on the episode where Bobby joins the meat-grading team. I know there were episodes that aired after it but to me that last scene with Hank & Bobby grilling together is the closest thing we’ll ever see to a long-running series “sticking the landing”.
I felt the same way,the episode with Kahn on anti pills was the last.
@@billriddle9215 that episode was dark as night and a good one overall; but my god what a terrible “finale”. I choose to think this is one of those times Fox messed up the order of airing (ie what they did with Futurama S4)
Idc.
Roseanne came back to huge rating. I believe the same would happen with KOTH.
Edward Durden me too man me too I'm sixteen i was raised on koth
For sure
Man!! I would love it!
Not really I miss it tho

There's something funny about *Royal Crown* soda advertising their _American_ taste
Huh. I always wondered what RC stood for. Still a good soda though.
@@cameronvadnais4388 RC tastes like dollar store cola.
This is the best adult cartoon screw family guy and south park they have no logic to them like KOTH does
facts
South parks at least makes the absurdity cohesive. Family guy isnt just random its lazily random
Agreed
I was born and raised in Texas and we did this same thing at my high school, where the football players dressed as cheerleaders and vice versa. Good ol Texas.
I remember every single night at 9:00 King of the Hill would come on, have some good memories watching it on Adult Swim
I love that so many of us have gone back to this show with adult eyes and finally enjoy what we didn't appreciate at first
one thing about KOTH that I dont think is appreciated enough is how the design of the characters is made in a way that doesn't look cartoonish. It manages to be simplistic without being overly realistic that gives it a much more grounded feel.
Someone likes fallout new Vegas
So do I. Honestly one of my favorite games of all time
Son Gohan This might sound blasphemous, but I prefer the clunkiness of NV over Fo4
I've been playing it since the 2nd grade
What does that have to do with the video ? Just asking
@@cutterholt3987 their was a song alot a people really enjoyed that they learnt from a game called fallout new Vegas.
I can forgive hank for the doggy confusion. I'd be thrown off in that situation.
You showed a pic of Jeff Daniels when you said 'Craig Daniels'
Is joke
As someone who grew up in a small town in the midwest, this show reminds me of so many people and situations I knew/know in real life. Probably one of the best and most accurate (and fair minded) portraits of middle america in pop culture. Hank may be a stick in the mud, but he's ultimately a good guy and often, in his own way, has a point,
The soundtrack to this was perfect, well done.
_"I'm your worst nightmare!_ I have a 3-line phone and *NOTHING* to do with my time!"
Has to be my favorite line out of the show!
And the people applauding around him ships it, lmao
The King of the Hill writers are in Cartoon Wars pt 2 because they sent flowers to the South Park staff after the first episode of Cartoon Wars aired. They HATED having to share a programming bloc with Family Guy.
Sorry, got distracted by you playing “I’ll Fly Away” and Hank Williams in the background. Either choose worse music or at least songs my Nana didn’t sing to me as a child.
It was distracting wasn't it?
