    Hi Michelle. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with the world! I'm 47 yrs old and dreamed of being a flight attendant since I was 7.
    It's amazing how we appreciate videos like yours when you know that's what really interests you. I listened to every single word you said and it gave me more inspiration to go for my long last dream. I'm still in thoughts of applying but hopefully I will make up my mind and one day get my "wings" 😊
    Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
    Best of luck with your carrier Michelle! 😊

    Hi Michelle! I agree with you when it comes to how strict the recruitment process is in the Ph as compared to the US and Canada. I've tried so many times in Ph carriers but because my height is just 5'5" (for a male), I usually get rejected despite of my skills, experience, and academic achievements. Whilst here in the US, I tried applying as a Flight Attendant, and I got accepted easily. For the first time, I never felt insecured of how my appearance was nor my height when applying as a Flight Attendant unlike back in the Ph.
    Btw, I'm friends with Jessica Hamerston, a YVR based Westjet crew. Cheers! ❤️

    Hey Michelle. Great channel you have here. great info and insight into the Flight Attendant lifestyle.
    I wanted to ask you a question. I have just bee sent a post offer for Swoop which I am very excited for. Was wondering if any of your training ended up being on the weekends? It states that you have to be available at any time for whatever training is sent your way. My guess is that Swoops training is based on the same as Westjet as they are a subsidiary of the airline.
    appreciate your feedback. And thank you for sharing your journeys.

      Hello, thanks for watching! If I remember correctly, we had the weekends off. Having said that, we had some weekends where we needed to go to the training campus for uniform fitting, etc. If I’m not mistaken, you’d be given days off, I’m not entirely sure if they still hit on the weekends. It might depend on how the training is scheduled these days. Hope that helps and best of luck! :)

    Hi! Love the video so helpful. I'm 20 years old and looking to start on my journey to becoming a flight attendant, I am also located near Vancouver! I'm looking at the tourism program at Vancouver Career Collage right now, it seems like a good fit because they offer practicums (thinking its good to get some hands on experience, and build my resume.) The program doesn't mention anything about working as a flight attendant for future careers though, just in general travel and tourism work. Im wondering if you know if that could cause a negative impact when then applying for positions? Or is it necessary to take one of the courses with "flight attendant in the description." Online is super unclear about what kind of schooling you need. haha. Thanks so much!!!

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  3 года назад +1

      Hello, thank you so much for watching. Please don't feel sorry, I'm glad to answer your question if that helps you in any way. I personally think you do not need to take another Travel/Tourism program. Most airlines, in fact, accept a high school diploma. Having said that, it would be beneficial (because they would consider the candidates who hold a post-secondary diploma/degree more than the ones who don't. To put it simply, more work + education experience = better chances of getting the position) if you also hold a post-secondary diploma/degree, specifically related to the Tourism and/or Aviation industry, which you already do. If I can leave you one piece of advice, that is to gain some work experience, specifically in the customer service industry or something related to travel/aviation. I personally think my resume stood out because on top of my education experience (i.e. having a college diploma and a university degree), I also had about 8 years of customer service work experience, which I think was really the key (more than the education diploma/degree that I hold). I hope that helps. Best of luck!

      Hi, thanks for watching! When I applied for the position, we had to do a physical test which involves some lifting, reach, pull, push, etc. I can no longer remember every detail of the test but yes, there’s a physical test you must do and pass before you go for initial training. Hope that helps! Best of luck! :)

    Hi ate michelle! Watching this video inspired me again to pursue this childhood dream of mine. I’m currently enrolled at University of Ottawa with an undergraduate degree of International Development and Globalization. I’m planning to switch in communication or political science but I’m still unsure what program is really for me. Deep inside I know I just want to pursue my happiness, the excitement of studying tourism. But... there is a lot of but’s and what if’s. Bachelor in tourism is mostly not available at universities and it’s only available at colleges. But it’s also a dream of mine to have a diploma in university. At the same time I’m not really sure if it’s worth to study tourism in this time of lockdowns and pandemic. Huhuhu I’m so confuse right now.

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  3 года назад

      Hello, thanks for watching! I'm glad to hear my video inspired you. I guess my only advice for you is to weigh your priorities in life, not just for the present time, but also taking into consideration your future. I know it sucks that we can't have everything. I struggled with this dilemma too, hence I had to (also) list down the pros and cons. Try to ask yourself these questions: 1) What matters to you most (happiness? money? status? lifestyle? staying practical? image and what other people might think about you?), 2) Do I see myself living a life where things are always just "safe and comfortable" (work-wise, money-wise, what people think, etc) or do I see myself living the life I truly want (happiness-wise) even though it might not always be a walk in the park? 3) Do I care about peer pressure and what other people think about me when I pursue something or not?... it won't be that easy, and it's only you who can truly answer your own question. In my personal experience, as I've matured and gotten older, I care less about what people think. I still try to balance my happiness and reality as much as I can, but every time I make a decision, I always make sure my happiness comes first on that list. I go for what I want; for what sets my soul on fire. Because I've come to realize that we only live once, and when the time comes that I have to leave this world, I do not want to be regretting the things (that make me happy) that I did not do just because I was scared. Also, I really hate the feeling of doing something (e.g. work) and be miserable everyday because I do not enjoy or I'm not happy about it. I'd rather be making an "okay" (enough for a normal life) amount of money but happy than be making a lot but miserable. I don't want to be wasting my time, effort, and money on something that I know I'll be miserable in the long run. Again, this is just my personality and opinion. Also, never be scared to make mistakes. I've learned that mistakes are just part of life, and that's exactly how we learn and grow as individuals. Somehow, whatever path you choose in life, you will still end up somewhere, learning, growing, and adjusting to that chapter of you life. And you will find a way to make it work. You will always find a way. That's the beauty of life. :)

      Hi, thanks for watching! :) Unfortunately, no. If your benefits kick in, you can fly standby for a reduced price. But you’ll have to pay for it yourself. Also, I personally would not recommend going home during training as these weeks are stressful and the training is intense, you will need the weekend to study and the weekends are your only time for break, going home might put more stress, just my opinion. Hi, thanks for watching! I honestly can’t remember much about the exams (i.e. how many there were). When I did my initial training, they were way stricter than they are now I think. If I remember correctly, my strategy at retaining and learning was reading the manual word for word and understanding them. When I understood what I was reading, I didn’t really need to memorize a lot except for those that actually needed memorizing. It made everything so much easier for me. Best of luck. You got this!

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  Месяц назад

      Hi, thanks for watching! Hmm that’s a good question. It’s been a while since my initial training. If I remember, I packed the essentials (clothes, toiletries, makeup). I did pack my own supplies for class (notebooks, highlighters, pens etc). You don’t need to worry about groceries as you’re able to order them and get them delivered to your room (the front desk will explain it more when you get there). Maybe pack some sort of a lunch kit for you to put your lunch in.. (of course a lunch container too) I’d say even a reusable bag (similar to that of a lululemon shopping bag) will do. If you plan to do grocery shopping in person, pack a few bigger reusable grocery shopping bags just in case. You’d have to provide for your own laundry detergent, so it’s up to you if you want to purchase it there or pack some detergent pods from home. I think that’s pretty much all I can remember. Best of luck!

    Do u plan on changing company if theres an opportunity in the future ? Flagcarrier or international ? Did the listing u applied for back then had exact words like “in vancouver base” or just vancouver ( which means they could potentially give you different base in the end ). Their listing ryt now just says “city:vancouver” , and the one for yyz is the same but with words like “ We are proactively hiring candidates for anticipated vacancies.”
    Thank you:)

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  2 года назад

      Hi, thanks for watching. I cannot see what the future holds, but I can say that I’m happy with the company I work for right now and where I am at my job so that idea doesn’t even cross my mind. :) Depending on the airline you wanna work for, they might have different rules regarding base transfers and what not. But, usually if the job posting specifically tells you which city they’d be needing the FA position, that’s pretty much where your base is going to be. When I applied for the position, they had three different base postings: Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver. I specifically applied for the Vancouver one, and so Vancouver became my base, and it will remain my base until the company offers base transfers and I choose to switch to a different base (or if,for whatever reason, my base closes, then of course I might have to be relocated to another base, but this is unlikely). Hope that helps!

    Hello :) So since flight attendants usually have to stay away from home for days at a time, do they give you enough time to sleep at the end of your last flight for the day so you are prepared for the next day? Or are the layovers generally very short and you have to sleep on the plane ? (Also does WestJet pay for employee accommodation if they have to stay at a hotel overnight?)

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  3 года назад

      Hello, thanks for watching. Yes, flight attendants are usually given a set number of hours to work and once it’s maxed out for the day, FAs must first go through a certain number of hours of rest period for them to be able to declare “fit to fly”. Usually layovers are close to 24 hours minus the time FAs need to prep and be ready to fly. So let’s say about 20 hours of free time. It will depend on where the layover is. Every airline is different. The company pays for the accommodation during layovers and will also provide for a meal allowance. Hope the above helps.

    Hello! I’m not sure if you’ll see this but I might as well try my luck. I have over 6 years of experience in the customer service industry but I’ve only ever worked in one place before and I don’t currently have a degree/diploma other than my high school diploma so would my application still be considered? I’m also short (5’ft) so how likely is it for someone like me to get hired for a Canadian Airline? Nice video btw💕

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  2 года назад

      Hello, thanks for watching! Most airlines accept high school diploma (just double check on the list of requirements on the job posting just to be sure). Because you have 6 years worth of customer service experience, that will put your resume to advantage. I used to have about 8 years of customer service experience before getting the FA position and I had also only worked at one job, so it doesn’t really matter. So long as you have the experience, you’ll have a better shot at it. Height won’t really matter if the airline’s requirement is to do the reach test instead. So long as you’re able to reach that certain height, you’re good to go. The height to reach will depend on each airline, so I cannot really give you a specific number. Sorry about that. I hope the above info helps. Best of luck! :)

      Hello, thanks for watching. That’s a good question. I personally have not asked my peers that when I fly with them. It just never occurred to me. But I’ve heard of some folks who did not hold a Canadian passport at the time, and still were able to become an FA. In Canada however, if you are not a Canadian citizen, I believe you must be a permanent resident with a PR card plus you must be able to obtain all visa requirements of all the destinations your airline flies to, so that you’re able to operate on all those flights. Hope that helps. Best of luck!

    Hi! I have a quick question, do I need to go into post-secondary? I finished high school and plan to work in customer service for the next while because I know that's important. But I just don't have the money to go to school. Also, I don't know French right now (I'm Canadian) but I can learn it. How many languages do you know? I'm a bit nervous since I only know 1 language fluently but I'll work on this.

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  3 года назад

      Hello, thanks for watching! To answer your questions: most airlines accept high school graduate. It depends on the airline. Having said that though, I believe having a post-secondary diploma or degree, especially related to the job (i.e. Tourism, Travel, Aviation, Business, etc) will potentially give you an advantage. And you’re right, gaining work experience is actually really good. It’ll set you up for a better chance of success in the future. With regards to a second language, again this will depend on the airline whether or not they’re looking for a bilingual cabin crew member, in which case, yes you do need a second language. But not just any language. It has to be one of the languages listed on their job requirements. In my case, I was fortunate enough that the Filipino language, “Tagalog” was included on that list, and because I speak the language fluently, I was qualified. Some airlines do not require a second language, so I suggest maybe looking into those airlines first as a start. Wearing eyeglasses is totally fine (for most North American airlines. An Asian airline is another story). I do have a pretty poor eyesight and I need my glasses all the time (or contact lenses). So it’s totally fine! I hope the above helps. Best of luck!

      Hello, thank you for watching the video. :) As far as I know, Canadian Airlines don't specify a minimum height requirement for you to be able to apply. Having said that, when I did move forward with the hiring process, I had to do a physical test, which required a lot of lifting. The test also required for me to reach onto a certain height on a wall. If I recall correctly, I was not allowed to wear shoes, but they told me I could "tip-toe" if I needed to. I'm probably around 5'3 1/2" I would say, and when I did the reach test, I did not have to tip-toe, and I passed. That's the only "height requirement" in that regard in the airline I applied for. And I had to do the physical test after the in-person interview and I was already offered the training date. I wouldn't specifically recommend a flight attendant training school because most of the time, Canadian Airlines don't require for you to hold a certain diploma or degree. Most airlines only require a high school diploma. My Travel, Tourism, and Flight Attendant Diploma plus my Tourism Management University Degree, along with my customer service experience, were an advantage though because I had the education and most importantly the customer service experience. If you already had the Tourism education, that would be a great asset to your resume. But if I were to suggest, I'd say maybe focus on gaining a lot of experience in the customer service industry. When I applied for the job, I already had 8 years of customer service experience and that really caught their attention, in addition to my education. Airlines will normally require a certain number of years of customer service experience. :) I hope the above helps. By the way, I love hearing a Trini accent. So great you mentioned that! :)

      aunjanue reyes Hello, thanks so much for watching. Congrats and good luck to you! With regards to your question, I believe “height” isn’t that big of a deal. Having said that though, you must pass the “reach test” that they call. Being taller will give you an advantage because you’ll be reaching the required “height” without problem. In my case (it could be different for every Canadian airline), I was asked to remove my shoes and do the reach test bare-foot (they allow tip-toeing). I’m 5’3 and if my memory serves me right, I was able to reach that certain “height” (I’m sorry I forgot the exact measure in number) without needing to tip-toe (like I just made the cut without tip-toeing, and if I needed to, I was allowed to tip-toe anyway). Also keep in mind, every airline will be different because of their fleet. Some airlines operate on bigger aircraft, which means the overhead bin will be much higher, so I’m guessing their reach test will involve reaching a higher height measure. I know some FA peers who are a bit shorter than I am, and they were able to pass the reach test. My suggestion is for you to apply to airlines who operate on smaller aircraft first (e.g. low-cost carrier airlines perhaps) and just work your way up. I hope the above helps. :)

    Hi! I was wondering about how the work schedule for WestJet flight attendants works since I’m looking to apply... How many days in a row do you usually have to be away from home? Do you get a normal two days off in a row after you come back home? Thank you in advance !

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  3 года назад

      Hello, thanks for watching! There’s not really a set schedule for us FAs. You’re given a certain number of hours per month that you have to work and those hours will depend on how you want your schedule to look like based on what you bid for (bidding and getting what you want are not guaranteed though). So for example you wish to have your weekends off, you can bid for that. You can also bid for the number of pairing days you would want to work. So for example, if you want to work three days straight, you’d bid for a three-day pairing. I believe you can also bid for your “least choices”, say if you don’t want five-day pairings, you are able to avoid that by bidding. Bidding happens every month, which means your schedule per month is always different. Once you completed your “hours” for the month, the rest will be your days off or if you’re still allowed, you can pick up more flights up to a certain number of hours. I had months where I worked three different shorter pairings in a week, had a week’s worth of days off then back to work again. Since there’s no guarantee, you pretty much have to be open to working any time of the day. I hope that helps. Good luck! :)

    • @78elysia78
      @78elysia78 3 года назад

      @@MichelleAngela that is so helpful, thank you so much! So for example, if I wanted to bid for a 5 days on and then 3-5 days off would they be more flexible with that type of thing?

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  3 года назад

      @@78elysia78 Hi, it really depends because although you’re able to bid, there’s more to it than that. The computer system, I believe, will have to consider the number of times you’ve bid for that schedule. I don’t know exactly how it works but if I’m not mistaken, the system will try to balance out everything for everyone to at least get what they want at some point. This is to be fair for everyone, so for example if you bid weekends off every month, I doubt you’ll be getting those every month because again, the system will also try to be fair to others. That’s why I guess it’s important that you’re able to accept the fact that you’ll be available to work any day and any time of the week (i.e. no birthdays off, no Christmas, no Thanksgiving or any holiday).

      Hello, thanks for watching. Every Canadian Airline is different. With regards to tattoos, most airlines allow them so long as you’re able to cover them up with clothing/uniform or makeup, if I’m not mistaken. Height standards vary. With my own experience, they do not look at your height, but you’d have to do a “reach test” and the height will depend I guess on the aircraft type you’ll be trained on (i.e. the bigger the aircraft, the higher the reach test will be because of the higher overhead bin). Most, if not all, Canadian airlines require for the candidates to at least be a permanent resident (or a Canadian citizen). When I applied for the position, I already hold a Canadian passport. I personally do not recommend the college that I attended because some airlines do not even require a college diploma (just high school diploma is okay). The college program I took did not offer post graduation permit. Having said that, it would be a benefit if you hold a post-secondary diploma/degree. They also give a higher consideration to those who also have an extensive years of customer service experience. I hope the above helps. And good luck! :)

However, I do believe the airlines take higher consideration to those who have years of experience in customer service, backing up with a certain level of education. Some of my FA friends graduated with a diploma/degree in the healthcare industry, yet they were still able to apply because they backed it up with impressive customer service experience. It will have to be a balance of work and education experience. I suggest as early as now, if you're able to, get a customer service job so you can gain those experience while still in HS. By the time I applied for the position, I already had about 8 years of customer service experience, so that really caught their attention. Having a diploma/degree in a related field, such as Tourism, Aviation, Business perhaps, will be an asset in the longer run too. I took up a diploma in Travel, Tourism, and Flight Attendant but decided to proceed with a degree in Tourism Management, because I also plan to work in the corporate/business side (the more intricate work) of the Tourism industry maybe in the future. Otherwise, I would have just applied straight out of high school, as most airlines only require a high school graduate, if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully the above helps. Good luck to you! :)

      giposh Hello, thanks for watching! :) As far as I know, there is no age limit so long as you’re at least 18 years old if I’m not mistaken. And I’m honestly glad that’s the case. I feel like it’s a bit of a discrimination if there was an age limit. I had people from training who were young and in their early 20s and then there were also people who were in their mid 50s I believe. So it’s really diverse that way, which I like. Hope that helps. :)

      Hello, thanks for watching. To answer your question, every airline is different. Some, I believe, do require that you know how to swim. With the airline that I work for, it wasn't a requirement. Having said that, it would be beneficial to know the basic swimming skill. This will be to your advantage in case there was an emergency. I hope that helps and good luck! :)

      Hello, thanks for watching! When it comes to education, there isn’t a specific program you must take to be eligible. Most airlines can accept a high school diploma. Having said that, they will obviously give higher priority to those who hold a diploma or degree that is related to the industry (like tourism, business perhaps, aviation, etc). Also, airlines don’t just look at the education, you must also have a good amount of years of customer service work experience. To summarize, Canadian citizenship/permanent residency + education experience + work experience will give you an advantage. It will depend on every airline. I suggest you look at the airline’s past job postings online to be able to get an idea. I hope the above helps! :)

      Hi, thanks for watching! I personally do not know the requirements of Air Canada, as I do not work for the company. If you see their job posting, they usually state whether or not they are looking for a bilingual or unilingual cabin crew member. If it was bilingual, they might list acceptable second languages. When I had my language test done, they asked me questions about topics regarding economy, housing, etc. If you think you are able to converse in these topics in French and do it fluently, even as a beginner, I think you are still able to apply with no problem. More than anything, the company is looking if you’re able to make a deep conversation in that second language. If you’re unable to do it fluently, they might not consider. But there is no harm in trying so I suggest give it another try, who knows you’ll get it this time. Best of luck!

      Hello, thanks for watching! To answer your question, it really depends on which airline you are planning to apply for. I know some airlines (perhaps Asian airlines) are picky on the physical looks of the candidate. Some Western airlines are not as picky. Based on my experience, they never looked at the scars, but they do ask if you have visible tattoos that you potentially will have to cover up because of the company's policy. It's best to check with the airline itself. I hope the above helps. Best of luck!

    Hi! I'm currently a 3rd year tourism management student here in PH and I plan to move and apply as an FA in Canada after acquiring job experiences. I have read in the comments that you can only apply if you're a PR or a Canadian citizen. Are there a lot of job opportunities in Canada that I could easily apply for temporarily? And would the salary be enough paying for food, transpo, and rental expenses? ‘Cos I heard Canada has a high cost of living😅 Your response would be very much appreciated!

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  3 года назад

      Hello, thanks for watching! With regards to job opportunities, yes there are a lot especially in the customer service industry. With regards to salary/wage, if you’re applying for these positions temporarily, depending on what kind of job, you might start getting paid minimum wage (this will all depend on the province you’ll be living in, the minimum wage there, also your work experience might have an impact on whether you’ll be paid a bit more than minimum wage). What some people do to survive is cutting down expenses like perhaps getting a room-mate so they get to share all the bills. They also consider the location. For one thing, I can tell you that here in Vancouver, housing (including renting etc) is VERY expensive. Just in case for future reference, you might want to really look into which province in Canada is better with regards to this. I hope that helps. Good luck! :)

      shruti pandey Hi, thanks for watching. I think it really depends on a lot of factors. For example, newly-hired FAs will not be making as much as the senior ones. Also, it depends on your block/flying hours. If you did not fly as much, you will not be paid as much. Another thing will be the location. For example, if you are living in Vancouver or Toronto, it will probably be harder compared to other cities or provinces across the country. FAs are not making as much as say people from the healthcare industry..well, not right away. You have to work hard to get there, with years of experience of course. So, just like any job, you have to also balance out your expenses and savings. Everyone’s situation is really different. Some FAs have double jobs, others do not need a second job. Hope the above helps. :)

Having 20/20 vision wasn’t a requirement when I applied, so if it’s not written in the job description, you should be fine. With regards to the French language, it really depends on the airline and what their job posting is saying. Hello, thank you so much for watching! :) As far as I know, there is no "height limit" per se. That being said, when you do apply, you'll go over some sort of a "physical test" and I believe most airlines will include a "reach test" in which you'll have to be able to reach a certain height, barefoot, to pass the test. I am not sure if this is the same with Air Canada, but I assume it's similar across the board for all Canadian Airlines. I hope that helps. :)

    • @MichelleAngela
      @MichelleAngela  3 года назад +2

      Hi, thanks for watching. Every airline has its own requirements. I can’t really speak for the whole Canadian airlines in that regard. However, with my personal experience, I wasn’t asked about my height. Instead, I had to go through a physical test that they require and one of the things I had to do was the “reach test”. I forgot about the actual height I needed to reach, sorry about that. With the reach test though, I had to remove my shoes but was allowed to tip-toe if needed be. I would also think that the height for the reach test would vary per airline, as each airline has its own different fleet. So if the airline you’d want to work for has bigger fleet, I would assume the reach test would be higher, as they would have to match the height of the aircraft’s overhead bin. If I were to give a suggestion, maybe try applying for airlines that operate on smaller aircraft first, and then from there you can work your way up. I hope the above helps. And good luck to you! :)
