'It's like drinking a campfire.' sat by the Sea, surrounded by Trees with a slight Drizzle bringing out the scent off the Earth. Its like drinking Mother Nature!. My Favorite!!.
1:20 me and my friend were introduced to this whiskey as noobs by some old bar-dweller, we've never drunk whiskey before (well we did but never liked it, always thought it was too strong), but from the moment we drunk laphroaig we were hooked. we loved it precisely because of it's smokeyness. we would always drink beer and wine, never strong alcohol because it's not drinkable, it dehydrates you and burns your throat. Laphroaig is the first ever strong alcohol (+30%) that I truly enjoy drinking
My whishky journey started with Laphroaig 10. Since then I have hardly cared about other Scotches, Bourbon or Irish whiskeys. Love the peaty smoke of this single malt!! Just drip, stir, sip, savor and let the island of Islay show in your lowball glass.....Slàinte mhath folks!!
Laphroaig 10 year old was what got me into whisky. I think it varies a lot between people what you get hooked on. The smell of newly tarred boat that I got when I first smelled this whisky was what made me fascinated with it.
Glenlivet I had first, once I had the Laphroaig 10 I knew I'd never be the same...drinking the ten year right now. I just bought the Chivas 12 and I like it too. I've had Ardbeg and Glenmorangie Lasanta, Laphroaig Quarter Cask... Laphroaig is always going to be a keeper around the house. Something about the peaty, smokey poison reminds me of the briny sea and unforgiving gales!
Hated. HATED this the first time I tried it. Almost gave my bottle away. Ended up moving to Ardbeg and came back to this 3 months later. Now love it. It's funny how your taste changes.
I love the smell and taste of smoked peat but there is a strong asphalt taste to the whiskey. It's also a different kind of smoke taste. I love smoked mozzarella and there was one brand that had a wonderful flavor. Thinking all brands were the same, I tried one from a different company and it had a rougher smoke taste that wasn't pleasant. That's how I find this scotch whisky. There is also that medicine-like quality (fenolds?) to it as well. I've yet to discern that sea breeze taste in the whiskey...or any Islay whiskey so far. I honestly thought this would be my favorite based on the smokiness.
Laphroaig made me discover that I finally had developed a taste for whisky. Now I'm tasting more and more whiskies, even japanese ones, but I'll always come back to have a taste of my first love. Thank you, Laphroaig!
I started with this as my first single malt scotch and I fell in love instantly, Laphroaig is still my favorite :-) I miss that intense smoky and peaty taste in other bottles
The first whisky I genuinely liked(before I had only tried cheap blends) First bottle of whisky I bought which then led me into other scotch whiskys. Then some Irish and then bourbons etc. I remember how exciting it was, a completely new world of taste opened up. And very much thanks to you Horst! Thank you
This is an amazing islay. It captures the area it was created in perfectly. It makes me feel a special kind of way that I can't really put into words. It's just magical.
I had my first sip watching this video , gosh you waiting so long after the nosing to take your first sip .... I wanted to follow you and enjoy the review . One of my favorite whiskies i ever tried ... as you said the nose is so much stronger than the palet , still very very smoky , notes of dirt if even say , like you dug a hole in your garden and put your nose in it . Not too much bite very smooth , surprisingly sweet ... sweet brioche , freshly cut grass , a touch of bitterness I can’t describe at the end . Pretty short finish , but a very intense experience !
At least 20 years ago, me and friends had a special dinner in a small nice restaurant with all lightly smoked small dishes: from cheese to fish, from pasta to meat. They served lot of cold water and half glass of this Laphroaigh. I was worry to become drunk early anyway it didn't happen and that dinner was one of my best ever, as I perfectly remember now, after so long time. It is an alternative way to appreciate this "soft" but rich whisky, gathering small bites of selected smoked food
This is the only scotch I drink. It's not the best, but it's brilliant in that it simply refuses to compromise. It's smoky as all hell and it really doesn't care if you don't like it. This is who it is, and it will not settle for mediocrity just to make you more comfortable. And I absolutely love it.
PPM values Here are some examples of PPM values of some well known distilleries (the approximate PPM of their malt is in brackets in increasing value) Bunnahabhain (1-2) Bruichladdich (3-4) Springbank (7-8) Benromach (8) Ardmore (10-15) Highland Park (20) Bowmore (20-25) Talisker (25-30) Caol Ila (30-35) Ledaig (35) Lagavulin (35-40) Port Charlotte (40) Laphroaig (40-43) Ardbeg (55) Longrow (55)
This week was my first contact with Islay peat whiskeys. My first glass of Laphroaig 10 was overwhelming and somewhat disappointing. Two days later I tried Lagavulin 8 this time and was equally amazed and fascinated. I did not know that smoky aromas could marry so well with a sweetness that little by little it was coming out of its hiding place behind a smoke screen. Today I just gave Laphroaig 10 a second chance and this time I have managed to tune in to what this whiskey is capable of offering. It has taken me to Scorsese's movie "Shutter Island" over the cliff, into the cave with the fire, into the gloomy corridors of a drug-scented asylum. And suddenly, in two drinks it has turned into a placid beach gathering on a starry night with friends around a candle. And the anise, raisins and candied dark fruit have come out behind the same mysterious smokescreen from the beginning. What a trip, friends!
This is one of the best and most unique whiskeys out there. Feels light while swirling in the mouth. Smooth, yes, peaty, yes but also heavy flavour of the casks. Combine them together, and the taste reminds you of a very old book. Sounds odd, but strangely pleasant. Salty, yes, but once again very, very smooth. The after-taste is pleasant. The flavour of alcohol doesn't linger, it is washed away by the intensity of the above mentioned. I find this more easy to drink than the likes of lagavulin, glengoyne etc. An absolute gem. I rate this one 10/10
One of the first whiskies I tried - still my favorite to date, I have become a massive peathead and only go for peated. Hard to beat laphroig on peatiness!!
I'm very impressed with the whisky. I've been drinking The Glenlivet 12 and Highland Park, which are both wonderful in my opinion, but Laphroaig is very different to the nose and I very much enjoy it's flavor. Lots of character.
Laphroaig was always my favorite until I discovered Ledaig. Anyone who loves Laphroaig ought to do what they can to hunt down a bottle of Ledaig 10yo. In my area (Denver, CO) 1 in every 5 liquor stores will carry it but most will order it if you ask.
That can happen. I've had a bottle of it sitting for over a year and a half and I'm starting to appreciated just now, with less than a fourth of it remaining.
+Whisky.com I'm new to the world of whisky and I'm already on the love side for smokeys :) Which smokeys would you recommend, apart from Caol Ila, Ardberg, JW Black and this one?
I never drank scotch before. I'd only had a shot or two before of whiskey and bourbon in my life. I opened it, took a quick amatuer swig, and I love it. It comes up after one heavy sip frequently and really just smell/tastes like an old inside-smoking house smells like. - BUT it tastes/smells good!
"Don't give it to a newbie" Yeah... my wife and I tried our first single malts last night. Macallen gold first followed by this. We both said if we'd tried this first we wouldn't have bothered with scotch again! Reminded me of the taste in the air of an "old man type" pub pre smoking ban. I concluded if I were a smoker I'd probably have really enjoyed it but not for me. I'll revisit it in time when I have more experience.
Actually this exact bottle was my introduction to scotch single malts, and I absolutely loved it. I remember thinking "that what a proper whiskey should probably taste like. Like a charred barrel. Soo hardcore" :))))))))
Interestingly Lagavulin 16 was always are go to but man do I love the Laphroaig 10. It's just so interesting to me. I tried a few Ardbeg varieties with more punch/smoke but the sea aspect to Laphroig is far more interesting to me.
i started on bourbon last year, really enjoy it, have a 6 bottle selection at home now. i have 2 scotch whisky unopened, 18 yeat old Genmorangie and a 19 year old Bowmore. im away at the min, so decided to try a new whisky each night. Just tried the Laphroig (my first scotch). LOVE this stuff, the smell is great and the taste even better, would never of thought id like this. cheers
One of my first single malts and I immediately loved it! I disagree on not jumping into this as a general rule. Know your own pallet. I like strong flavors and particularly love anything smoky including rauchbiers so Islay scotch is a no brainer for me. That said, I like the lighter friendlier scotch too. I just love scotch. Scotchy scotch scotch...
This whisky is amazing I love it, the richness of sugars just when you play with it in the glass are amazing... I think its not as strong as Caol Ila 12 years old but its very very good. Its superb!
I tried this the other evening, and I did like it. Ive only recently started properly appriciating scotch whiskies like this, and I got the Talisker 10 for Christmas which I am really enjoying. In the talisker, I find, whilst it still is very much a maritime malt, almost salty sweetness like salted caramel, beneath the beautiful peat smoke. I found the laphroaig 10 very much a savoury malt. It reminded me of the smell you get if you walking down a beach or beside the sea with the added aroma of a peat fire burning in the distance. The sea, salt air, peat and seaweed. For that reason I do prefer the talisker over this, although both are works of art!
Prior to trying Laphroaig 10, my primary distilled spirit of choice was Jack Daniel's. I tried the Laphroaig 10 from the recommendation of other computer systems administrators and this instantly became my go-to for enjoyment. It was the first single malt I ever tried.
Great review and great reviewer! Really enjoyed your description, engaging from start to finish. Busy enjoying the slightly inferior 'Laphroaig Select' while watching, and about to order a bottle of the 10yr old. Subscribed.
I don't know what a 'campfire' tastes like, but Laphroig does smell like an expired campfire or what my clothes smell like after I been around a campfire or I have been chargrilling for a while. I was surprised that it didn't hit me as much in the taste. It had more sweetness then I expected. Also, I usually get a peppery feel from most Scotch or Canadian or Irish Whiskies on the front of my tongue but Laphroig had absolutely none of that. So, yes - a strong smell but a smooth non-burning taste. Just one note. I had two drams at a birthday party. One before dessert (cake) and one after. Having it after definitely took away the sweetness. I preferred it before the cake.
I like this stuff a lot. Before I was a whiskey enthusiast, I was very much into pipe tobaccos. I have to say this stuff reminds me of a strong English Blend like the Ambassador's Blend of Hearth and Home.
I was sure that I would dislike this and other smoky whiskies, that is until I tasted it at a restaurant and got hooked immediately. It's like drinking a campfire with the addition of wet wood, amazing.
This was my go-to scotch when I lived in Maine. One does not have to sniff from the glass to appreciate the nose. Whenever I drank it, my daughter could smell it from across the room. In addition to the taste, more than any other scotch I have ever consumed, there was a distinct intense warm sensation that descended from my throat to my stomach as it went down, followed shortly after my a full warm rising glow. As such, it is the perfect scotch for those who live in the more northerly latitudes. In that regard, it might be the quintessential scotch.
Very good whisky! For sure a unique one. This is probably the 4th or 5th single malt I have tried and the first with lots of peat smoke; I was a little nervous about the ones with heavy peat but I like this very much it is subtle especially after the first taste and like you said it develops nicely! This probably won't be my favorite scotch whisky but I do like it a lot and wont mind keeping some around. The mouth feel is very interesting too almost silky.
my wife and I tried our first single malt scotch in Highland Park 12....now we're trying this. She's on her way home with it right now. We figured if we're going to get into scotch we might as well jump in with both feet. lol
Amazing how just a couple small dashes of a quality naturally sweet spring water OPENS UP this lovely Islay 10 yr old whisky.... The malty sweet fruity notes JUST JUMP out with a much more bbq sweet smoke type effect on the tongue.... Just wonderful.......... Neat it is HEAVY HEAVY smoke in your mouth like an oddly edible mouthful of ash..... Somewhere intertwined in all of the already mention flavors are these notes of salt, seaweed, and brininess...... Gonna take a while to chew this bottle down...... Want to see how flavors develop in the bottle over a good month or two..............
I love Laphroaig because of the very peaty smokey flavor...it reminds me of Connemara which is the most smokiest most peatiest Irish whiskey there is..
@@jakel6473 i have really enjoyed this whiskey, it has became my favorite! This and ardbeg 10. I do not get the cloroseptic throat spray taste anymore though... Happy holidays!
I love the reaction on your first sniff and it gives the impression that it should be one of the the strongest whiskies. Lagavulin 16 are suppose to have similar peat smoke and ardbeg even stronger, but you seemed to have a milder reaction on those. How is that possible?
I appreciate these reviews, i can tell by Horst’s reactions that he isnt really a fan of this whiskey but he still takes the time to go through it and pick it apart.
I started with Lagavulin 16 and Laphroaig 10. The heavy and complex flavors sounded like what I would really like. I've tried Speys and Highlands but the southern Islay three (Ardbeg included) are right up my alley. The Laphroaig Quarter Cask is amazing too!
Horst hit it on the head. First time i tasted this whisky i was new to whisky, i fhought it terrible, by the time I got half way through I thought it was the best thing I ever had, the smokey smoke is incredible. I love this whisky.
A few years ago one of my favourite bar started to stock up a larger variety of scotches and bourbuns. Till that time I didn't much care about whisky kind of stuff. My surroundings were obsessed with cheap bourbons, eg Jim beam, jhonny walker red (the worst), etc. I've drunked theese and I could find them good of anything interesting beside the hype and marketing bullshit. Than I found single malt scotch. Itt was an instant change. And the laphroigh 10 was one on the most amazing stuff (in affordable dimensions). This was far better than anything cheap bourbon. Itt has flavours not just alcohol and sugar. In this 10 year-old you can smell, taste the see, smoke, shit weather, dark clouds, fish. This was the most memorable thing that I've drunk that time. This IS a fucking good whisky. If someone one wants to try this kind of product just forget everything about that shit you think it was a whisky. This is a whole new dimension of taste. If you just want to get drunk look for some cheap whatever.
Horst, I would consider myself very much a newbie only ever drinking typical blended Scott Whiskies, but I tried this as my entry into single malts after reading that it was very well regarded and I LOVE IT, didn't find it to be too much, was truly pleased that I picked up a bottle, now I am picking up Lagavulin 16, Laphroaig Lore and Ardbeg 10 based on watching more of your reviews, thank you!
Does "rotten tang" mean the same thing in Scotland than it does in Ohio? I like scotch, and I have tasted rotten tang(because of drinking too much scotch), but I'm not sure I want to drink scotch that tastes like that.
My first smokey whiskey! Tcp, Smoke, fresh fruit and a very long smokey salty finish and aftertaste! I'm a novice with only a 15 year Glenfiddich, 12 year Highland Park ,15 year Dalwhinnie and a Glenfarclas 105 tasting but I found the Laphroaig 10 very accessible and very interesting ! Ardbeg or Lagavulin is next!
I couldn't drink whisky for 40 years until on a visit to Scotland I tried with reluctance this malt. Since that day I have been hooked. But on Isla whiskies only. So to some strange tastes like mine, as a first try it could just occasionally get someone hooked.
Although he is correct by saying don't let your first time buddy drink it.... laphroaig 10 was one of my first and I instantly fell in love! you never know try it 👌
Glenfiddich 12 was my gateway to scotch. It was Macallan 12 Double Cask next, then Lagavulin 16. Then I bought a bottle of Laphroaig 10 and immediately fell in love. As many have said it’s like a burnt out campfire... on the beach. I wonder what my impressions would have been if my introduction to scotch started with Laphroaig.
This whisky was my first taste of peated whisky. Definitely a taste to get used to, but anyone enjoying a single malt whisky every now and again should try at least once.
Tbh I've basically never tasted whisky in my life and I was introduced to quarter cask Laphroaig, basically spent 5 minutes trying to grasp which smells it was made up of. Got the weirdest stuff, from smoked leather, rubber, dentist alcohol and a hint of agrumes, oddly it wasn't overwhelming nor unpleasant. Cool thing is that the flavour lasted a lot after the tasting
definitely a bucket full of wet, juicy Band-Aids mixed in with some old school medicine from the 1800's...... blend it nicely then throw it into an old burned-out campfire and wring it out into an old dusty bottle and there is your flavor. absolutely stunning!
Had my first sip of Laphroig in a bar in DC. Not sure exactly which variety it was, probably a common on. The first sip and whiff blew my mind..... Tar, Asphalt, Paint Thinner, Smoke, Smoke and mor Smoke, Earth. But I got hooked. I rarely drink, but this is definitely nothing for whimps.
Have to strongly disagree with the opinion that it’s not a whisky for beginners. Although a very smoky whisky, it is also very light. I did a whisky tasting for Danish tourists recently comparing Peated, Non-Peated and blend. I used Aberlour 10, Famous Grouse and Laphroig in that order. In a taste test most people loved the Laphroig.
I'm honestly surprised this channel isn't more popular, I always enjoy a dram of new whiskey watching Horst whenever possible.
It's like drinking a campfire.
Edit 4 years on: This wasn't an insult. It's my favorite drink ever.
BINGO! Exactly what it tastes like!

100%
It doesn't taste smoky at all to me, just medicinal. It smells lovely though.
That's what I alway thought. Moon shining, wolves howling and the lake refleting the campfire you are sitting at with this bottle.
that first sniff at 5:53
that's the whole reason i went out and bought this bottle.
I just love this whisky. Can whisky be beautiful? The smoke. The iodine. The seaweed. The aroma. Each sip, an intense religious experience.
I agree! It's unique, and it's fantastic.
Deuteronomy 14:26
Whole heartedly agree !
Whisky is beautiful
It sounds like it should taste horrible, but it's absolutely delightful.

me too, fell in love immediately.
Third scotch I've tried and I loved it immediately
A friend gave me a bottle of this as they hate it.
I absolutely love it, It's so tasty.
I love to relax with a glass of this.
Love it. I love the campfire of Laphroaig, and the tobacco/leather of Ardbeg.

Horror, confusion, fascination, infatuation. The four stages of Laphroaig.

I actually love this bottle, one of the first few I bought, taste like an old book, camp fire, and a leather chair.
Actually, this was the first malt whisky I bought and it made me fall in love with malt whisky! So a novice can enjoy it.

Trying Laphroaig 10 tonight. In a rock glass with rocks. I am so in love. That smoke is just beautiful. I've joined the club. Cheer's Everyone lol

Port Charlotte 10 yr old Heavily Peated is delicious as well. The tropical fruit kick underneath the smoke is really interesting.
I’ll try and find some of this.👍🥃
How does it compare to Laphroaig?
By far my favorite scotch. Through half my first bottle in less that two weeks.
This got this in a bar and it was my first whisky experience, and after the first glass I was hooked on the heavily smoke/peat whiskies after
bandaids and swamp water, absolutely love it
lol
Laphroaig Quarter Cask was my first single malt - and I got hooked! Something's probably not wired right in my brain...

this was the first whisky I ever tasted and I just fell in love with single malt and laphroaig.
I think Laphroaig 10 is a masterpiece! I'm curious as to what the older casks have available.
This one surprised me. The aromas is heavy campfire smoke, but on the palette, it has a terrific sweet finish.

First peated Whisky I ever tried, loved it since
Prior to trying Laphroaig 10, my primary distilled spirit of choice was Jack Daniel's.
Just opened a bottle yesterday. The intensity surprised me, but I like it.
Its unique even in comparison to other smokey islay whiskies.
I love its special smell and taste.
Just getting the knowledge before opening my bottle :)
It is so very good. Love the peat smoke.
Best whiskey so far that I have tasted, smokiness does only good for whiskey
Good whisky/whiskey is a form of art. One of man's great culinary discoveries and refinements. Thanks for the good review.
my first "proper" whisky after decades of drinking jim beam/jack daniels etc. Introduced me to a whole new world.
I was sure that I would dislike this and other smoky whiskies, that is until I tasted it at a restaurant and got hooked immediately. It's like drinking a campfire with the addition of wet wood, amazing.
This particular bottle is what started my love of scotch.
As smoky as this is, it goes perfect with a nice cigar!
Agree
I think this is actually too strong and intense for the cigar.
Great review from someone who really adores great whiskies
Very good whisky! For sure a unique one. This is probably the 4th or 5th single malt I have tried and the first with lots of peat smoke; I was a little nervous about the ones with heavy peat but I like this very much it is subtle especially after the first taste and like you said it develops nicely! This probably won't be my favorite scotch whisky but I do like it a lot and wont mind keeping some around. The mouth feel is very interesting too almost silky.
my wife and I tried our first single malt scotch in Highland Park 12....now we're trying this. She's on her way home with it right now. We figured if we're going to get into scotch we might as well jump in with both feet. lol
+LevitatorMusic update....best. thing. ever!
Once you start drinking Islay scotch it's hard to go back to highland and speyside.
HP 12 happens to be my favorite whiskey 😊
The 2nd whiskey ive tried on my journey into whiskey. From glenfiddich 12 to this. Such an intense flavour. Neved been so proud to br scottish
'Fiddich 12 is my all time favorite. How did you like this one?
This was the first single malt whisky I ever tried. I loved it. I must be strange.
Had a bottle of this about 2 weeks ago.....loved it
Amazing how just a couple small dashes of a quality naturally sweet spring water OPENS UP this lovely Islay 10 yr old whisky....
Laphroaig themselves suggest the splash of water... I have been adding a splash of soda water for fun.
I love Laphroaig because of the very peaty smokey flavor...it reminds me of Connemara which is the most smokiest most peatiest Irish whiskey there is..
Medicinal flavor to me is a sore throat spray I had when younger.. Instantly reminded me of that.
my wife said the same !
Lagavulin is not all that strong on peat. It's more rounded and balanced, Laphroaig and Ardbeg are more similar in their intensity.
I just caught what you said yes that’s what I get a a delicious smoked ham with honey glaze... can’t wait to pick up another bottle
100% agree
Probably the best whiskey I've tried so far
I had my first taste yesterday. Brilliant.
Im not a big whisky fan, but this one made me change my mind.
try it with potstickers braised in fresh rosemary - thyme - sage - soy sauce - YUMMIE!!!
This is so random, lol.
But yes, I too am eating Potstickers with a dram of this!
One of my favorites right now... love it
I couldn't drink whisky for 40 years until on a visit to Scotland I tried with reluctance this malt. Since that day I have been hooked. But on Isla whiskies only. So to some strange tastes like mine, as a first try it could just occasionally get someone hooked.
4:11 meh HEH
i just open my bottle 10 minutes ago.. i was shocked....First Islay... i like it so much
Although he is correct by saying don't let your first time buddy drink it.... laphroaig 10 was one of my first and I instantly fell in love! you never know try it 👌
Glenfiddich 12 was my gateway to scotch.
You should try the glenfiddich 15 solera vat 👌 my absolute go too and favourite
This whisky was my first taste of peated whisky. Definitely a taste to get used to, but anyone enjoying a single malt whisky every now and again should try at least once.
the laphroaig was the first whisky i have ever drunk
and yes ..... it was interesting xD
It was my first & I didn't think it was strong at all. It was just right.
5:53 LOL
+shotgunwound hahahaha
After he gets past the smoke, he describes hospital cleaning supplies as the smell. WTH? That's not something I would look forward to in a whisky
often described as bandaids or a first aid kit....but not a dominant smell/taste for me....laphroaig is bloody delicious, a top islay dram.
definitely a bucket full of wet, juicy Band-Aids mixed in with some old school medicine from the 1800's...... blend it nicely then throw it into an old burned-out campfire and wring it out into an old dusty bottle and there is your flavor. absolutely stunning!
@@matthewhood4716 definitly not a dram if you never drink whisky or are a beginner🤣
The Laphroaig 10 was my first, and this newbie LOVED it. In fact, I think I'll go have a bit right now...
mine too.. it was a challenge, but i think my tequila experience helped me appreciate the subtle complexity and not get turned off immediately
For the price this is way better than it deserves to be
Have to strongly disagree with the opinion that it’s not a whisky for beginners. Although a very smoky whisky, it is also very light. I did a whisky tasting for Danish tourists recently comparing Peated, Non-Peated and blend. I used Aberlour 10, Famous Grouse and Laphroig in that order. In a taste test most people loved the Laphroig.
That. Was. Beautiful
