The CLA has one of the prettiest sounds, finishes and colors. Eastmans look so unique
Eastman definitely holds its own, but the bass response on that Collings, next level
Volume and tone too. Last one wasn't bad though
Wow! The Eastman really holds its own, and then some. Interesting.......
Thanks so much for this video. I'm quite tired of clips comparing Eastmans to their price class rather than their build class.
Thanks for watching Mark
Mark Holter couldn’t agree more
Are you somehow suggesting Eastman is in the same build class as Collings? Come on... let's be real. Easmtan produces real nice guitars but they're no where near Collings...
I've owned 4 Eastman acoustics (including a prototype rosewood b/s slope shoulder then called the EJ45) and 2 electrics. Great guitars.
Just as a frame of reference (prices rounded)
$5500 CJ-35
$1500 E10-SS
$800 E1-SS Ltd
They are excellent guitars!
CJ sounds crisper more clarity and punch in the mid range than the Eastie’s to my ear. I guess all that money has to come through in the sound!! I love Eastmans and own them but the Collings make them sound dare I say wishy washy 😲
Wow I was really impressed with the Eastman E10 SS! It actually held its own against the Collings.
The e10SS is a fantastic value. It stands up to the big boys for sure.
@@ianmeadows6351 I AGREE AND WITH A FEW YEARS AGING IT WILL GET BETTER.
Eastmans for me ..lovely and rich ..sound like a gorgeous warm guitar ..lovely bass to .China is a extremely sophisticated country especially when it comes to the arts ..beauty guitars .
Anthony Roach I just bought the E10 as/v. It will be delivered within a few days. I’m jumpin outa my skin:).
Collings seems super clean and articulate. Nice balance high to low and I am not sure if it's because of the mic or what but seems like a sound canon. Eastman very close and super good especially considering its price point.
Hi Ian, How is the neck profile on the Collings? It looks wider than the Eastmans. I am considering a Collings, finding one to play is almost impossible where I live. Would you consider the Collings comfortable to play?
Thank you, Adrian
Another fine example of how to give a fair comparison to acoustic guitars with similar characters..
Lovely demonstration. Clearly music can be made with any of them. But I am sure the slightest of mic placement difference could have had a significant impact on the recorded sound. I would say:
1. CJ35
2. E1SS
3. E10SS
All sound great though. What we can't know is how effortless it is to play each guitar and I am curious about your opinion.
EDIT: Listening again, maybe the E1SS might be number 1!
Thank you for the kind words. No doubt you are right about minute mic placement differences. I try to get it as close as I can, but still. I would agree that theyre all fine instruments capable of making music too. I look at these videos just as a way to give players a general idea of the tonal variations in all of these guitars.
As to the ease of playability, they're fairly similar as they've all been set up we'll. I will say that Collings attention to detail and precision is a thing of beauty, they are very well made. But I wouldn't say one of these is particularly easier to play.
E1ss the best
That Collings is making me drool....what a beauty that thing is...its one of those walk around the house looking for things to sell on eBay guitars!
Thanks for the real world and tasteful playing in this great demo. I'm so sick of listening to egotistical twats being self indulgent and trying to be cool. This is a great comparison, thank you so much. Best wishes from Northern Ireland. 👍
Thanks for the kind words sir! Many more vids to come!
Hate to say it but the Collings has some weird almost harsh chimes in the sound, Eastman really has nailed slope shoulder with lush and sweet tone.....great looking too, thanks for the demo.
As always you got another great demo, it just you doubled up on E10SS strumming and no Finger picking. Cheers
Gotta be honest - I really don't hear a difference between these guitars. They actually sound identical through my Senheiser headphones. How much in "Collings" on my headstock worth?
Ian...where do you get all these guitars, you live in a music shop 😆 Nice work again with this!
Great review... Thanks
I will most likely get the Eastman 1ss but the collings still top of the heap in this comparison... actually quite mellow and we'll rounded
Why would you buy a Chinese guitar, and support China 🇨🇳?
Hi Ian!
Did you use the same type of strings on the Varnish-Eastman as the one in this demo, E10SS?
The E10SS sounded quite a bit brigther to me than the the E10SS-v, which I actually prefer. Thanks for your great demos.
me too.
Your strumming pattern always reminds me of a Turnpike Troubadours song. Not a specific song, just that I expect Evan Felker to start singing about Lorrie!
Thanks for the great comparison.
I’ll be picking up an Eastman soon. The electrics are extraordinary as well. Hand made. Also the acoustics have a longer scale length than most common acoustics. I think it suites them very well. Nice playing and very good sound quality as well. Subbed!!
Thanks Dudeman. They are truly great guitars. I own several of them, they are all well built and reliable!
Nice, im following eastman e1ss ltd cla. With price range sub1,000usd, any other guitar can compete?
Take a look at the Gibson G45. Also, although not my cup of tea the lower end Taylors are pretty damn good guitars for the money.
i prefer the E10SS , lovely clear balanced tone.
Wow, the E10 SS!
Actually through my highend Bose headphones the Eastman E10SS was much more balanced, present and defined string to string. But the Colling's was prettier. But at almost 4 times the price I would put my money on Eastman!
They all sound great to me!
No bad guitars here! :)
@@ianmeadows6351 have you compared the E1SS vs the Taylor 327?
Thanks for the video Ian. Comparing the Eastman's to the Collings makes a great comparison. I am tired of comparing the Eastman slopes to J45's. The E1ss-ltd very nice.
Thanks for watching Steve. The e1ss is an excellent guitar for the money.
@@ianmeadows6351 Hey, I actually got one of those, largely because of your videos of it. One thing - it came stringed with .12 gauge. I have been playing very little acoustic in the last years, so it's normal to feel those 12s, but still, the guitar feels a bit stiff. What are your impressions? Is such string tension average, or above average? On the other side, I really like the sound of it now and am weary of going down to .11s.
@@soundshigh Get a neck and fretboard adjustment. The action is most likely too high.
@@Morten_Nielsen1979 Thanks! I can't really measure it right now, but will definitely check this. But it feel pretty good for an acoustic, and there's no string buzz - only a little bit when I drive it louder with the pick. Btw, this is the amazing part with this guitar - you can dig in and it preserves balance and fatness of sound.
@@soundshigh The distance between the 12 fret metal and the strings should be the width of a matchstick. Almost all new guitars have too high action. And some frets that stick out - these should be leveled so minimum string height can be achieved.
i think E1SS is really good for value!
a few months back I picked up an Eastman in a guitar shop and it sounded fine but as I recall the neck was FAT. Are all Eastman guitars built with that fat neck?
They don't seem fat to me. Fairly standard C, medium profile. I've got small hands, too.
My hands are on the small side, and the neck on my e10ss feels great.
the E20SS doesnt have a fretboard support under the soundboard. In 2 years time it will have a hump at the 14th fret
E10SS sounded great. Shockingly I didn't really care for Collings.
That eastman is by FAAR the better looking guitar out of the bunch.
I like the last one the best.ESS-LTD_cla
Eastman sounds closer to the Gibson it's imitating, a great sounding guitar regardless... The Collings sounds like a Collings, more sustain and shimmer. This is expected because the Collings is based off the vintage Gibson J-35 whereas the Eastman E10SS is pretty much a clone of the modern J-45 Standard but with an Adirondack top. The Collings has with the Gibson J-35 it was based on has pre-war style non-scalloped bracing, the E10SS has scalloped bracing like the modern J-45 and well even the modern J-45 Vintage uses scalloped bracing. That's probably your biggest differential on tone . There is no "one is better" just pure preference.
Sure enough! I try not to spend time with any "bad" guitars. They're all good, it just comes down to the player.
The Gibson J-35 have different angles in the x part of their braces. The X angle is larger that broadens out the frequency response, less focused sound, and the J-45 X bracing is much more acute smaller angle which gives a narrow frequency response that sounds more focus. Just thought I throw that in. Now I'm sure if the Eastman E10SS has the smaller acute X brace giving a more focus or the boarder like the J-35 sounding more open and dynamic.
Collings by a country mile. Eastman E1 great bang for buck, should play in and open up a lot more.
Eastman
I'd never own a Collings. Way over priced for a bolt on neck.
