Excellent idea about the cold air running out of the open door on side mounted fridge doors. Just think of the wasted energy in our homes with the way our refrigerators and freezers are designed. The old style deep freezers had this right. Very nice build.
@@cisarvialpando7412 Yes, and they are based on the old style design of a top lid, as are large freezers people put in their garages to freeze deer meat. The fridge/freezer in my camper van has a top lid as well. Sometimes the old ways are the best way in my opinion. Not always, but sometimes. PS. My parents had an old freezer with a top lid that was built in the 1940's. That thing was still running even after they both passed away in the early 2000's.
8:12 warm your paste with a hair drier before final tightening. This changes it's phase to a liquid and allows better tightening for better result. Also, you applied a lot more than needed - this reduces net thermal conductvity. About half as much next time for that size. Thick paste=bad
True. Thermal resistance, like any resistance material, is proportional to thickness, and inversely proportional to the area of the grease. Hence, thick paste = bad.
Switching only one of the Peltiers with the thermostat , and keeping the other one on permanently is a very clever engineering idea. Provided that your desired temperature range requires at least half of the cooling power. Your set temperature can not be too close to ambient. Mostly that will not be a problem. You are so right that a lot of video's about peltier cooling are ridiculously optimistic.
hi. an even better method is to switch both peltier modules between 12V and 5V. because if one peltier module is switched off, it's not a good thermal isolator and it will transfer temperature from one side to the other.

If you are planning to do more of these..... 9volts seems to be the best maximum voltage for good efficient. Using more like 12volts starts to create extra heat. You should try out stacking them, like 9v+5v+3v. I am currently using 3x12706 modules, running them at 5v+5v+3.6v and was able to reach -31celsius measured from top of Peltier. Those 3 units use total of 27watts. I did my first test today and seems like the box might be too big (25L), i still have not build a proper door for it, but in 1h30mins it cooled down 9celsius from 21c --> 12c. It is also very important to measure your temperature outside the box wall, to see if the insulating is working good enough. For example my 25L box starts to leak cool air after it hits 12c. 0.4celsius is getting thru the insulation which does not sound much, but when there is a lot of surface it adds up. But all in all, i have watched a lot of these videos and i must admit yours is the best one so far.. Good job.
true. but you should try watercooling the peltiers its more quiet and the peltiers run cooler so they pump more heat. For insulation 3cm thick urethane panels are good.
@@emppu-tech6065 And how do you cool down the water in the warm water block? Also, where do i get a water pump that runs at 5voltage and does not use a lot of watts? My setup is totally silent because the CPU fans run at 5volt, it does not make any noise. And my CPU cooling block heats up only +2 celsius over ambient temperature, so no water cooling is needed. What do you mean by 30mm urethane is good, are you saying it does not leak out any cooled air out from the walls? Currently i am making my setup little better, i am now hitting -37 celsius using 1x12710+12708+12703 modules running at 5v and using about 35-40watts. With this setup CPU block on the warm side goes +3 celsius over ambient, so no need for water cooling either. This looks like to be enough for the big 25l box, still in middle of testing how low the box air goes.. PS: The 12703 is great at 5voltage... @@Ruube1978 Your cooling setup looks pretty good. so watercooling isnt going to make a difference but if you want even better efficiency try better insulation so less heat is going to leak into the fridge. this is currently the best insulation you can get: www.bauhaus.fi/sauna-satu-kingspan-0-72-m.html

The fan on the hot side must be turned upside down to blow hot air out. Inside you need to install a small fan so that there is air circulation. 12v small ice more hot. 10v maximum ice, minimum hot
you can use a 6v peltier with 12A in sandwich formation and this will help you get -15 temp inside and with normal heat outside .... means you dont need bigger cooling
Ma bucur sa vad un proiect, bine documentat, din partea unui conational. As face totusi doua mici modificari. As muta distantierul de aluminiu pe partea fierbinte, unde am nevoie de inertie termica. Pe partea rece acest distantier se comporta ca o rezistenta in calea caldurii, intarziind si limitand racirea. Trebuie probat, nu sunt sigur ca am dreptate. Si a doua sugestie este ca as pune ventilatoarele in serie si fara diode. In felul acesta as reduce consumul lor si mai ales uzura si zgomotul. Bineinteles ca RPM ar descreste, fiind alimentate cu 6V fiecare, dar nu cred ca aerul fortat cu ventilatoarele la maxim ar face prea mare diferenta. Am sa imi fac si eu un racitor de acest gen, chiar asa cu 2 celule. Am in cap sa folosesc un management al temperaturii radiatoarelor la exterior si sa le dau drumul alternat, la celule, cand diferenta intre ele ar fi de 10 gr C cel mai cald se opreste si cel rece porneste. Ventilatoarele le tin pornite continuu. Initial sa mearga amandoua celulele, pana se raceste in interior, apoi cand una cand alta. Celulele sunt mai eficiente cand sunt bine racite pe partea fierbinte.

At 7:50, you showed your curcuit diagram. I saw that one of the peltier modules are always connected to power (the right one) and the other is only on when the relay is on. Is there a reason for that? And which one in the hardware should be the one that is always on?
hi. one peltier module is not enough to cool down the entire box, but it will keep the temperature from rising too fast. if the relay disconnects both peltier modules, the temperature will rise too fast, the relay will click very often. so by powering continuously one of the relays (it doesn't matter which one) the temperature will be more stable and less energy will be wasted.
hi. these peltier modules need a lot of power, you need a solar panel with minimum 12V and 6A. but the rated output power of a solar panel is available only in perfect conditions: summer, around noon, in a region closest to the Equator, solar rays perpendicular on the panel.. if these conditions are not fulfilled, the solar panel cannot output the rated power. to compensate for this loss you need a bigger solar panel, with a much higher rated power, plus a controller.
Good job. La interior panourile de aluminiu le-as fi unit cu acel cornier pe spate, cu suruburi cu cap înecat pentru spatiu sa nu fie incomod cand pui ceva la rece, sa te agati in suruburi. Acuma tu au facut cu racire pasiva la interior, eu as fi facut cu racire fortata, un radiator cu ventilator, sa circule aerul la interior si atunci ai o racire mai rapida(parerea mea). Se foloseste si la frigiderele din casa astfel de racire. Frigiderul meu din casa are ventilator in interior si plimba aerul incontinuu cat timp este usa inchisa si se opreste cand deschizi usa. Pe acest principiu este si lada mea frigo. Raceste repede ca plimba aerul la interior. Inconvenientul ca face putin condens si ai nevoie de o scurgere sau din cand in cand sa sterg/scurgi apa. In rest nimic de comentat. Explicatii la greu si asta imi place. La cat mai multe proiecte. Numai bine!

Hi. I recommend Peltier modules tec-12703. for my mini fridge 2 modules are enough to bring the temperature down to 47°F, maybe even lower. so it depends on the internal volume of your mini fridge, you may need more modules.

Not exactly how I to drilling and tapping. However your system works fine. The way you explained how you did the drilling , tapping. Safety was nicely done. I would like to suggest this to be made ( once all if any changes are made ) available in a kit form for sale .
Example : m3 x .5mm pitch tap drill Tap drill hole = 2.5 ~ 2.6 course to fit the taps The point is subtract the pitch to the threaded hole , or use a tap drill chart ,
Amazing video So i have a question in my country the temperature in summer is about 40 t0 45 degrees outside in room its about 30 to 37 degree So i will need the more powerful modules? Will peltier 12715 model work in that high temperature? But it have high power consumption Can u please tell me which one.i use to get that low temperature? Water cooling on hot side? Thank you
hi. the 12715 peltier module is using more current, 15A. it will produce more heat on the hot side so you need more cooling. I tested a few of these modules and in my opinion the best one is the 12703 module. I suggest you use 3 or 4 of these modules. they will need 9 - 12A, so you still need a proper cooling, but you will have 3 or 4 modules that cool the fridge. water cooling is better but it's more expensive.
1N4007 diodes. I use them in series with the fan, to decrease the fan voltage because it's to noisy. But I suggest you watch the part3 video and don't use the diodes.
how many peltier should I use for a 50x45x25cm box (inside measure)? I can put 20/30/40mm thick insulation on all sides if needed. I would like to go about 8°C from 28°C ambient temperature, at least should achieve 16°C
you need at least 4 peltier modules, but it will take a long time to cool down the inside. with 6 modules it will cool down faster. but very important is to use TEC1-12703 modules. if you use other type of peltier modules, they will not work very good and you will not get the desired result.
@@Sorin_DIY thanks, why the 03? I can find easily any other kind (most common seems to be the 06 but goes all the way up to 30) and I was thinking to something close to 80/90W each. A radiator similar to your on the cold side and 1 pc-like heatsink with heat pipes and 90x90mm fan for each peltier plus 4 13538 220V fans on left/right side to create a in-out airflow. I don't have noise problem, it will be used in one room to proof some bread/pizza dough during the night/day at a constant temperature. How can I send you some picture of my design for some advice?
yes, it's easier to find 12706 modules, but that doesn't mean that they are better. I tested a few peltier modules in a video on my Patreon page and the 12703 is the most efficient. 12703 draws 3A at 12V so 36W. 12706 should draw 72W (in reality it's about 60W). the heatsink needs to dissipate almost twice the heat. you can make a bigger heatsink. ok, but no matter how big of a heatsink you make, it will be almost twice as efficient with 12703 modules, simply because it's less heat to dissipate. so with 12703, the hot side of the modules will be... less hot than the 12706 modules. how will this difference affect your project? using the peltier module in perfect conditions, it will create a temperature difference between the hot side and the cold side of maximum 70 degrees Celsius. so the "colder" the hot side is, the colder the cold side will be. every temperature degree matters and for a few degrees colder, all you need to do is to choose the right type of peltier modules. there are also other advantages with 12703 modules. if you want, we can talk on the Patreon chat about your project.

peltier modules are very inefficient, they produce more "heat" than "cold". it may work if you use 3 modules to cool down 2 modules. but with 5 modules the current consumption will be too high and you still need a big heatsink.
@@Sorin_DIY i looked in my old fridge and main freezer is created by metal plate around box a freezing connected to it. Logically this with small cooler seems less effective. I still not do any, but can y test same sprite with metal box and plastic box? In my understanding metal box should freeze faster. Same should be with fridge.
Great job! I've built something like that but the issue with peltiers is that as soon as they switch off (temperature reached) they introduce heat from the outside heat sinks causing the temperature inside the box to increse quickly. Have you got the same issue? Or am I missing something?🤔
hi. you are right, if you switch off both peltier modules, the temperature of the cold radiator will rise very fast. that's why I switch on and off only one module. the other one remains turned on to keep a temperature difference between the cold and hot radiator and to prevents the temperature inside to rise fast. a better way is to use 2 outputs from the PC PSU - 12V and 5V and make the relay to switch between them. when the peltier modules are powered with 5V the temperature inside will rise very slowly. there is also another advantage now, at 5V the module will produce less heat in the back of the fridge, so the cooling radiator will get colder in this period and when the relays switches back to 12V it will be more efficient.
you can make a fridge with 4 - 6 peltier modules. but a freezer... it's difficult to make. because you need a big radiator for the hot side. you can't use more peltier modules with the same radiator, the radiator needs to be very big. maybe it will work if you use water cooling. the modules in my video are 12703, each one needs 3A at 12V.

12706 peltier modules use 6A each (the last 2 digits 06 means it uses 6A). these peltier modules are not very efficient, because they get very hot. I suggest you use the 12703 modules. you can find water cooled solutions for CPUs, they are good but expensive. if you want to go with aluminum radiators, they need to be very big. if you use 4 peltier modules, the model 12706, you need an aluminum radiator with a surface at least 4 times bigger than mine.

hi, I also want to make a small freezer for ice cubes. but I'm still working on the design, because I want it to be very powerful and efficient. It must freeze the water in maximum 1 hour. it will probably be very thin, for one or maximum 2 sheets of ice cubes. all the inner panels must be made of aluminum, but where will I install the lid? up or on the side panel? I must have easy access to the cubes, but the side with the lid will be the least cold. I will probably use 4 peltier modules, the model 12703. I will definitely make one, but it will take some time.
@@Sorin_DIY That sounds interesting. I'm thinking maybe having an ice tray sandwiched between 2 peltier modules (or 4 if needed, so it can cover more surface, 2 on top, 2 on bottom?). Then the access to the ice tray would be from the side / in-between, maybe some sliding mechanism even, like a short drawer.
I thought about that also, it will be more efficient. the problem is that it will be bigger and more difficult to build, with big radiators and fans on both sides. also the ice cube tray may get stuck, if a few drops of water fall and freezes between the tray and cold radiator. I will probably test a few ideas, before building it. I'm also thinking of making it with an upper lid and install 2 peltier modules and cooling radiators on the lid and other 2 peltier modules on the bottom panel.

nice job i pretty much did the same thing though mine could only reach 5c due to the fact that i got ripped off with a bad quality peltier.
Aleksander Sats 5c is fine, normal fridge temperatures range from 1 to 7c

Have you considered using tower coolers instead of those old AMD ones? They are vastly superior in the amount of heat they can dissipate.

With a progressive tap set like in the video, if tapping aluminum you can simply put the thing in a hand drill and run it through.

yes, but in the part 3 video I connected the fan directly to the relay. cooling the hot radiator it's much more important than the noise of the fan.

Acuma tu au facut cu racire pasiva la interior, eu as fi facut cu racire fortata, un radiator cu ventilator, sa circule aerul la interior si atunci ai o racire mai rapida(parerea mea). Se foloseste si la frigiderele din casa astfel de racire. Frigiderul meu din casa are ventilator in interior si plimba aerul incontinuu cat timp este usa inchisa si se opreste cand deschizi usa. Pe acest principiu este si lada mea frigo. Raceste repede ca plimba aerul la interior. Inconvenientul ca face putin condens si ai nevoie de o scurgere sau din cand in cand sa sterg/scurgi apa. In rest nimic de comentat. Explicatii la greu si asta imi place. La cat mai multe proiecte. Numai bine!

Hi. I recommend Peltier modules tec-12703. for my mini fridge 2 modules are enough to bring the temperature down to 47°F, maybe even lower. so it depends on the internal volume of your mini fridge, you may need more modules.

I would like to suggest this to be made ( once all if any changes are made ) available in a kit form for sale .
Example : m3 x .5mm pitch tap drill
Tap drill hole = 2.5 ~ 2.6 course to fit the taps
The point is subtract the pitch to the threaded hole , or use a tap drill chart ,

So i will need the more powerful modules? Will peltier 12715 model work in that high temperature?

hi. the 12715 peltier module is using more current, 15A. it will produce more heat on the hot side so you need more cooling. I tested a few of these modules and in my opinion the best one is the 12703 module. I suggest you use 3 or 4 of these modules. they will need 9 - 12A, so you still need a proper cooling, but you will have 3 or 4 modules that cool the fridge. water cooling is better but it's more expensive.

I Am Using 12V 10A Power Supply And 12706 Peltier
1N4007 diodes. I use them in series with the fan, to decrease the fan voltage because it's to noisy. But I suggest you watch the part3 video and don't use the diodes.
You don't need to spread thermal paste, it will spread out itself as you put the heatsink on.

how many peltier should I use for a 50x45x25cm box (inside measure)?
I can put 20/30/40mm thick insulation on all sides if needed.
I would like to go about 8°C from 28°C ambient temperature, at least should achieve 16°C
you need at least 4 peltier modules, but it will take a long time to cool down the inside. with 6 modules it will cool down faster. but very important is to use TEC1-12703 modules. if you use other type of peltier modules, they will not work very good and you will not get the desired result.

A radiator similar to your on the cold side and 1 pc-like heatsink with heat pipes and 90x90mm fan for each peltier plus 4 13538 220V fans on left/right side to create a in-out airflow.
I don't have noise problem, it will be used in one room to proof some bread/pizza dough during the night/day at a constant temperature.

yes, it's easier to find 12706 modules, but that doesn't mean that they are better. I tested a few peltier modules in a video on my Patreon page and the 12703 is the most efficient.
12703 draws 3A at 12V so 36W. 12706 should draw 72W (in reality it's about 60W). the heatsink needs to dissipate almost twice the heat.
you can make a bigger heatsink. ok, but no matter how big of a heatsink you make, it will be almost twice as efficient with 12703 modules, simply because it's less heat to dissipate.
so with 12703, the hot side of the modules will be... less hot than the 12706 modules. how will this difference affect your project? using the peltier module in perfect conditions, it will create a temperature difference between the hot side and the cold side of maximum 70 degrees Celsius. so the "colder" the hot side is, the colder the cold side will be. every temperature degree matters and for a few degrees colder, all you need to do is to choose the right type of peltier modules.

why not put some thermal mass like a layer of thin concrete inside the space?; this may limit temps fluctuation when peltier's are off

hi. if you use 4 peltier modules you need a more powerful power supply. laptop chargers are not powerful enough for this project.

peltier modules are very inefficient, they produce more "heat" than "cold". it may work if you use 3 modules to cool down 2 modules. but with 5 modules the current consumption will be too high and you still need a big heatsink.

PC fans won't last too much in a cold and wet environment. some space will also be lost inside the fridge if you install fans.
@@Sorin_DIY i looked in my old fridge and main freezer is created by metal plate around box a freezing connected to it. Logically this with small cooler seems less effective. I still not do any, but can y test same sprite with metal box and plastic box? In my understanding metal box should freeze faster. Same should be with fridge.

Great job! I've built something like that but the issue with peltiers is that as soon as they switch off (temperature reached) they introduce heat from the outside heat sinks causing the temperature inside the box to increse quickly. Have you got the same issue? Or am I missing something?🤔
hi. you are right, if you switch off both peltier modules, the temperature of the cold radiator will rise very fast. that's why I switch on and off only one module. the other one remains turned on to keep a temperature difference between the cold and hot radiator and to prevents the temperature inside to rise fast. a better way is to use 2 outputs from the PC PSU - 12V and 5V and make the relay to switch between them. when the peltier modules are powered with 5V the temperature inside will rise very slowly. there is also another advantage now, at 5V the module will produce less heat in the back of the fridge, so the cooling radiator will get colder in this period and when the relays switches back to 12V it will be more efficient.

you can make a fridge with 4 - 6 peltier modules. but a freezer... it's difficult to make. because you need a big radiator for the hot side. you can't use more peltier modules with the same radiator, the radiator needs to be very big. maybe it will work if you use water cooling. the modules in my video are 12703, each one needs 3A at 12V.

12706 peltier modules use 6A each (the last 2 digits 06 means it uses 6A). these peltier modules are not very efficient, because they get very hot. I suggest you use the 12703 modules. you can find water cooled solutions for CPUs, they are good but expensive. if you want to go with aluminum radiators, they need to be very big. if you use 4 peltier modules, the model 12706, you need an aluminum radiator with a surface at least 4 times bigger than mine.

A question for you - what would it take to create a freezer? My particular use case is making ice cubes.
hi, I also want to make a small freezer for ice cubes. but I'm still working on the design, because I want it to be very powerful and efficient. It must freeze the water in maximum 1 hour. it will probably be very thin, for one or maximum 2 sheets of ice cubes. all the inner panels must be made of aluminum, but where will I install the lid? up or on the side panel? I must have easy access to the cubes, but the side with the lid will be the least cold. I will probably use 4 peltier modules, the model 12703. I will definitely make one, but it will take some time.
@@Sorin_DIY That sounds interesting. I'm thinking maybe having an ice tray sandwiched between 2 peltier modules (or 4 if needed, so it can cover more surface, 2 on top, 2 on bottom?). Then the access to the ice tray would be from the side / in-between, maybe some sliding mechanism even, like a short drawer.
I thought about that also, it will be more efficient. the problem is that it will be bigger and more difficult to build, with big radiators and fans on both sides. also the ice cube tray may get stuck, if a few drops of water fall and freezes between the tray and cold radiator. I will probably test a few ideas, before building it. I'm also thinking of making it with an upper lid and install 2 peltier modules and cooling radiators on the lid and other 2 peltier modules on the bottom panel.
