  • Hi Guys,
Here is the review of the second watch that Oris lent me. The first was the Divers Sixty-Five with the Bronze bezel (link below), and now this is a hands on review of the new Oris Big Crown Pointer Date, with the bluey grey dial.
I was unsure about this watch at first, but now I love it!
As always, let me know what you think.

Love the date indicator - it’s like a countdown to payday.

I love so many things about this watch. The vintage look, that there is a 36 mm version, the elegant but at the same time modern look. The green dial version would make a perfect fall watch!

It's a great watch but 5 ATM is somewhat below par. Anyway I hope to get one. I love the retro styling and colourways.

Yeah, the cathedral hands are perfect for this watch! As for the 50m WR, yes it could be better, but it is pretty much par for the course for an “aviation” style watch such as this. My favorite variation of the Pointer Date is the one with the red/burgundy lacquered dial.

I've been looking at Grand Seiko but I already have a dress watch (Omega DeVille) and a diver (Seamaster 41mm) and this watch is ticking a lot of boxes for me. Casual, unique date complication, clear case back, decent price. Damn. Good thing I don't have a significant other to explain my affliction to.

Of all the watches that have come out in 2018, this one speaks to me: the color of the dial, the shape of the 4, the cathedral hands. I am very much in love with this piece. I am not a movement guy like many watch fans and I have an Aquis with a Sellita movement which I find more than competent. It just works for me. Well done.

I have a big crown from late 90's. They have changed a little... 36mm SS case is polished including lugs. Hands and red date pointer are the same. Real difference is the watch face which is silvered with a pattern engraved behind numbers 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 - 10 - 12 which are applied and plated like the gold hands. Movement is also based (modified) version of ETA 2824-2. Crown isn't screw down and the domed glass is plexiglass - no scratches and original. Although it does glow in the dark, the 12 markers are tiny. For me, the hands, details on the dial and of course the date pointer is the uniqueness (and charm too).

This watch is... mouth watering. The colour of the case and how it combines so elegantly with the wash out dial. The strap is sexy while I do agree there could be better options. Theres something so classic yet not "old" with that design. I am still debating wether to go for this or a Aquis as my first Swiss watch over 1K.

Had my eye on this since Basel - gorgeous looks. Came very close to going the green face limited edition on a recent trip, but the blue is just so perfect...certainly my next target. I may have made it difficult for myself by 'inadvertently' picking up the Baltic panda dial (limited to 100 pieces so not planned). One more watch can only work for so long with my wife!

Cute little watch with its own Hoxton Hipster student retro feel vibe. A great everyday knockabout watch that doesn’t need worrying about too much. With such a narrow bezel it’ll wear as big as a 40mm watch can. Personally I like the hands which add to its charm and character. A watch that is greater than the sum of its parts. Just cool and accessible just what a watch should be. And the blood red dial version. Well who knows...

Excellent review. One bit of constructive critique: your audio needs improvement. The echo is quite pronounced and the sound tends to “wash out” if you know what I mean. Also, you may want to get a better lighting set up because it’s a tad too bright. Other than that, the content is excellent! Keep it up!

Can't really fall off with Oris can you? Not a model I'm that familiar with though and like you not really my style either.
However I think what put me off was the machining around the bezel. Seems so old fashioned or is that retro? Yet another reason I don't care for Rolex that much is the bezel or crystal surround really.
Having said that the colour, face ,numerals (really loving them) date hand, and the main hands all come together to make a complete package. It's just different enough to be interesting without falling into a particular category which been honest is very refreshing.
    Priced about right too IMHO.
Thanks for bringing this one to my attention Adrian. Another cracking review.

  • @shope83
    @shope83 5 лет назад

I bought this watch loved it initially, but eventually ended up selling it. As you state in your review, it wears incredibly well, and the domed sapphire crystal along with the coined edge bezel is stunning. The pointer date function makes for a very clean field-watch style dial layout. However, the polished case sides, the hands (particularly the rather petite second hand) are just a bit too dressy for my taste and clashes with an otherwise aviation inspired watch.

Great review. I've been a big fan of Oris for long time, at first with the Aquis range that I still find great. I really enjoy with all the limited editions but they tend to be too big, often above 45mm. The Pointer Date looks great, would probably go for the green one though :)
Off topic, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts on the watch gang subscription. I heard about it yesterday for the first and you can subscribe for up to 1000 USD per month to receive a watch worth above 1500. Don't know who could afford it and why you wouldn't just take the money and buy anything from an Oris to a Rolex depending on how many months you save up. From what I saw it seems to only be "kickstarter brands" that somehow all look the same.

I just picked one of these up. It's my first Automatic watch and I really love it. I'd initially begun looking at Oris's Diver 65, but the easily changeable straps where a big selling point, at least to me. I can easily dress this watch up or down by changing the band. I purchased the distressed leather as well as the stainless steel band, and feel pretty well equipped for any situation. It's really comfortable and not too flashy, but can look great with a pair of jeans or a pair of slacks with a quick change of band. Also, it looks a lot different in person than it does in pictures. I thought 40mm might be to big, but i have to agree with @BarkandJack that it looks more natural and comfortable on my wrist than expected. I still hope to get that 65 down the road, but for now am really loving my Pointer Date :) Thanks for the review, Best!

I have only appreciated Oris traditionally, but this watch (for me) brings the brand back into my top 5. This color, style, and finish is outstanding. I simply love. I bought an Omega Seamaster back in 1999 and sold it. I have been wanting another mid-high end swiss watch since. Thanks in large part to your review I ordered one of these! Thank you!

And just in case you forgot about the big crown, it says "BIG CROWN" on the dial.

At first glance I thought the 4th hand was a gmt hand 😍, that's only when I saw that it was going to 31 that I figured out 😀 ! Anyway! Great review as always ! Cheers

It’s so good looking but the Selitta movement is so annoying. Make it in house and charge £2500.

Hello! This is a really well done vid! Liked it a lot! Anyhow.. Which colors are this Watch avalible in? Ive seen dark red, more grey..blueish (or maybe its more blue in real Life), Brown and black (the Movember version). I have not seen them in real Life yet, but which colors do you prefer (you Viewers), and are there different kind of bands? The Movember ed. seem to have a not so matte Surface to it. Is that correct? Do you Think its too wide with its 40 mm ? Should it have been 36? =P

The hands are a huge part of what make this watches aesthetics so amazing. Just an opinion, but I'd say you are in the minority with regards to your opinion of the hands. To each his own though, we all like what we like, believe me I get it and I respect your opinion. That said Oris please don't ever change these watch hands. Lol
