    For people who can't afford a gun yet or are restricted (waiting periods, too young) I always teach them to learn the knife first. It was my first weapon and I still have it to this day. The right application of a knife can be as effective as a gun. One will not replace the other. We carry handguns as a secondary to our rifle, our knife is our secondary to the handgun.

      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 7 лет назад +3

      Then what is restricting you from a CCW permit? Are you an illegal alien? Or are you saying that they just rejected your form due to a lack of "shall issue"? If so, try heading to southern or central CA to get your paperwork filled through. It is a lot easier. Alternatively you can just keep applying and try different reasons.

    • @DaveSmith-cp5kj
      @DaveSmith-cp5kj 7 лет назад +3

      Sunny Mcfall is sadly partially right. Criminals carry all the time and we never know about it until they commit a crime. The CCW permit is mainly to keep tallys on you and label you. It can only hurt you unless you live in a pro gun area.
      However, Sunny is wrong about officers. Rarely are they the ones who will get you in trouble if they understand your intent for self defense, normally it is left wing leaning civilians who will make a big deal about it and an overzealous lawyers/politician looking to make a name for themselves.

    Knife attacks take seconds, disarms don't work in the real world. If you want your self defense knife to actually be useful you carry a fixed blade, fight standard grip, grab your opponet and stab until the threat is neutralized. Slashing doesn't cut through layered clothes unless the knife is heavy AND incredibly sharp. These are the basic principles of knife defense

    In my experience working with knives. I have to say spring assisted knives and automatics are NOT always faster than manuals, in plenty of cases manuals are faster, depends on location and deployment options, I've seen plenty of people deploy a manual as soon as it clears the pocket lining of the pants, even then, it's not always necessary --- the best way to defend yourself is knowing when something is about to happen.
    In terms of using a folding knife in a high stress situation I heard the math go something like this, thr success rate of operating the thumb stud or flipper to deploy the knife is anywhere from 60 to 75% because of thr fine motor skills required to open it in a high stress situation
    Whereas a fixed blade has a 100% success rate of deployment because it has no moving parts

  • @mikedebear
    @mikedebear 4 года назад +12

    Great pointers here.
    You're almost guaranteed to get cut when you find yourself in a fight where a knife comes out. Accept that fact and just keep fighting until you win. A lot of guys who pull out a knife in a fight lose control over it- it gets taken away or they're not prepared for how it reacts in their grip when fighting another person and it's knocked out of their hand.
    Get training in proven knife fighting styles if this is in your game plan. Kali or Arnis are superb styles- certain Japanese sub styles like Kenjutsu are good too- and quick to acquire basic functional skills. Fight training partners using blunted blades and put lipstick on the cutting edges- wear light colored clothing while sparring. It's extremely instructive as to where you are leaving yourself vulnerable. Train hard and when the real thing happens commit your mindset to never stopping until the threat is down- it's going to get messy and you will be cut at some point.

    Just to qualify my response. I served, my father served. Unlike my dad who was an unarmed combat instructor in the British army in WW2, I never actually had to worry about a confrontation utilizing an edged weapon...but he taught me anyway...its a Scottish dad thing lol.
    His advice? "Always walk away if you can..it takes a bigger man to walk away." "But if you can't walk away, here is what you do lad..."
    NEVER show your knife/pipe/brick/rock...whatever you have at hand. It should ALWAYS be tucked in behind your thigh...tight. Why? so it can't be kicked away. You would have to be unconscious for an assailant to take it from you. He also showed how to inflict maximum damage with any such weapon...but primarily an edged weapon. There is a reason why the commandos carried Fairbairn-Sykes knives. I won't get into the nitty-gritty details, as it is more of a show than tell thing, but trust me...if you pull a knife and hold it ANYwhere out in front of you or wave it around like a movie star, you will end up in the ER with it stuck up your a**...IF you are lucky.
    Walk away, run away, drive away, avoid confrontation at ALL costs...it won't end well for you.
    Enjoy your knife collection, open your letters, break down those Amazon boxes, and whittle away.

    well theres 6 mins 42 seconds completly wasted . i thought it was about what the title said , not how to take it out of your pocket., knife fighting is a last resort . if can get out of it do so , be keep in mind you are going to get cut your self , and try not to panic .my self , if i had to fight with a knife . i would be holding it in my fist pointing to the ground with the sharp edge pointing the same way as i would punch , then i can punch and use elbows as well , the more attacking options the better .

    1. Carry strong side. You can't do crap normally with your weak hand, much less under duress.
    2. Point up let's you unfold the knife quickly and or quietly and allow to use a slight flick to assist opening.
    Give it a try. Fending someone of with your weak hand and drawing and then repeating with the opposite. Bombai you learn brah!

    Using a knife for self defense is legal and essential to survival in the event of sudden attack. Turning to run = you are stabbed or shot in the back. Kill or be killed. Knives are allowed places where guns are not. I am amazed at people who claim they would defend themselves by gun but not by knife> Check your knife. Practice often pulling it from your pocket and opening it with one hand W/O looking. Ensure the knife has a solid lock, finger guard, correct length, and never let them see the knife. Only use for self defense. We are not assassins.

    For california legal folders (because almost every other sate is actually in America) like non gravity knifes or butterfly knifes or switch blades the best folding knife hands down is one with a wave feature where theres a hook on top of the blade so when you pull it out of your pocket it catches on your pocket and opens as you're taking it out I have a cold steel voyager xl with a zip tie instead of a thumb stud and it waves open perfectly and it's a 12 inch knife when it's open
    Most dumb criminal knife attacks happen with a normal kitchen knife so when they hear the crack of this thing when it locks open then they see a 12 inch mini sword they'll think twice
    Also if you’re “lucky” and have time to prepare take your shirt off and wrap it around your non dominant arm to use as a shield against the other knife

      Jardwards Kershaw is decent, I carry the 1776 daily, the spring broke from constant use but it opens just as fast as ever, it does dull faster then I like but it sharpens well enough to shave with rather quickly.
      If I had time to react I'd pull out my Benchmade 51, it's longer, looks intimidating af ( especially with the black blade ), quick and insanely sharp after a good strop.
      If I had to react fast I'd pull the Kershaw, it's plenty strong and opens lighting fast.
      That's my view and 2 Knives I never leave home without unless I need to enter a school or Federal Building.

    is there a particular reason to carry tip down? I used to carry tip down, but quickly realized that if it was tip up, I could simply put my thumb in my pocket, run it back until it hit the knife, pinch and draw and *viola* my knife was oriented with my thumb near the opening stud, facing the correct direction.

    • @TacticalRifleman
      @TacticalRifleman  7 лет назад +2

      Chad prefers a “Tip-Down Carry” because it allows him to acquire his preferred grip with a minimal movement of the knife. Minimal movement cuts down on potential for the attacker to knock the knife away before you establish your grip solidly. Some prefer different grips when knife fighting. I personally prefer "Tip-Up." That’s fine. Go with what you know and what you have trained to do proficiently. That is the important part. Then, just backwards plan your draw with minimum movement. You’ll answer your own question. Thanks for watching. Strength & Honor, TR.

    -4 inch for defence
    -Buy one you will actúally carry EVERY Day
    -The Most important Thing is the Strenght of the LOCK. The Strongest is TRIAD LOCK. The second is AXIS Lock.
    -The second Thing is to ensure that The handle is grippy enough: material and shape of handle.

      @@TacticalRifleman strongest locks on folders is the lockback, you need two hands to open it, not suitable for a suprise stabing, man i make knifes and in my opinion theres no such thing as a "self defense knife", they are designed to be working tools or murdering weapons, nothing in a knife is defensive, its all about attack, i wouldnt advise having a knife for self defense, in a scenario of knife self defense the best scenario would be the defender murdering the attacker with multiple stabbings and getting more than 10 years in jail.

If you hold the knife too close like he did, the blade may hit you which he unintentionally demonstrated here at 6:23. I just recently started following this channel because Karl really seems to know what he's talking about. I don't get that from this guy.

    I've learned that holding the knife with a wide stance, blade down, and occasionally sending a quick modest poke downward will keep MOST aggressors away, for the most part it is intimidation, because who the hell wants to get stabbed? Also take into account your grip, ive tried to stab through a door with a Buck 119 when i was 14 and had my hand slip down onto the blade, and was miraculously unharmed.

    Here is some advice for seniors like myself:
    When in a parking lot or bad area open the knife and hold it tightly. Don't wait until you are in danger. Don't stab but do slash at a bad guy. Cut his fingers and keep walking. Once you cut his fingers hard his body goes into shock. You just "defanged the snake". So leave quickly and let him bleed.
