I’m noticing now more than ever that a lot of labels now don’t push artists that aren’t white, light-skin or biracial. I think of Flo Milli, Doechii and JT that put in WORK, day in and day out, slowly getting their flowers, but unfortunately that’s the reality for dark skin Black women artists unless you have a lot of industry connects.

Think like artists like Sade or Aaliyah or Sza. Yes they are sexy, but their image gives more sultry (at least to me) than obvious sex image wise. I think when Normani gives overstated sexy instead of understated it leans more Beyonce/Chloe Bailey and then I think that might prevent new people from getting into her music because they think well we already have a Beyonce-esque performer in Chloe why do we need more.
I would hate to see her not shine because she is very talented. Maybe a new label, new team, and a new curated image (that she likes of course) would help her. Like her look for her song Fair is sultry and connects more with the type of music she puts out, not her sometimes sex kitten look. On a side note I'm still mad that her team (now i know Brandon) did not capitalize off of her motivation hype. I know she didn't like it necessarily (understandably because it kind of painted her like a mini Beyonce) but her team should have used the momentum and eyes on her to help her pivot to what genre she really wanted to be in. Pink switched her genre from R&B/pop to rock. She had to fight her label (LA Reid) of course, but even he admitted that he was wrong to have tried to keep her in the R&B/pop box. I really do hope this new team helps her thrive, and can get rid of the Brandon juju.

Completely agree. It’s too much sex kitten tease that doesn’t seem authentic. There’s a huge difference between sexy and sensual. She should lean more towards the energy Coco is giving. Youthful sexy, fresh and cute R&B. It’s one thing to perform sexy it’s another to inherently be sexy. Norman I doesn’t exude sex but she can perform based on her experience. I’d like to see her image be lightened and brightened to more cute and flirty rather dark vixen. She’s not Rihanna and neither is Chloe. She’s Normani, sweet, soft spoken and super talented. The adversity is also opportunity to have the confidence to explore her more natural side and other aspects of herself. She maybe perceived as boring bc she’s following a model that she’s not and moving fearful bc of the messy industry. She’s a butterfly that needs the space to transform and fly. Best of luck to her ❤
