The tent stakes used as pot holders is a great idea...will incorporate this in my bag of options. Great vid!
I too have cancer and it’s great not having the weight of my hair on my head, I saved a couple ounces right there.
What a great way to cut weight 😂😂😂
I’ve found The One, when rain saturated, begins to let water through in a couple of hours. Therefore, watch your weather reports when choosing this one. Love it on dry weekends, have concerns on wet weekends.
love your gear,i hope you beat cancer soon, stay strong,we are with you
Companies are not stupid at marketing; they send free products to popular RUclipsrs so their product can get air time and most often a favorable or neutral review. Their strategy is to get their product in front of eyeballs so one can see the product being taken out of the package, set up and tested. It is free advertising regardless of any sponsorship, and there are always links to the product and usually a special 10-15% discount or giveaways.
I'm not the tipe of guy going in to something to hate it but I did expect it to not be for me...yet I was soooo plenty surprised. You're so wholesome. Just loved it
I have both an Alcohol & a Canister stove. As it turns out the Alcohol stove is lighter if your outing is 5 days or less. And this is supposing that you’re going to do only one boil a day. Anything more than that, the Canister stove is a better option. This is because the weight of the Alcohol required would surpass the weight of the canister. Thanks for the video. Have fun out there. 🎀
Thank you for this haha finally some petite backpacking content!!
Tent stakes for the stand is excellent idea 💡
The next ultra, ultralight trend. I love it!
Just a FYI you could have used a tent stake as a eating utensil
But making chopsticks is way more fun! 😂
Thanks for the video. Looking and cutting weight costs as I progress. These videos help me on my journey. Cheers!
I opt for a 15° down quilt and x therm for my ground camping but my base weight is almost double of yours lol.
Alcohol stove is actually heavier then a canister stove after a 2 day trip. I've done the math multiple times and a brs stove with 550 pot is a bit lighter then my toaks Alcohol stove with the same pot. The killer is the wind screen. I do love the Alcohol stoves sound lol
What about Toaks wood burning stove? 🔥
The large stove set up weighs the same as a canister and BRS.
@@E_Clampus_Vitus .. be sure wood fires are allowed ..
@@rockytopwrangler2069 Yah, I can’t use it as often as I like. Still, nice to have for when I can.
How much does your windscreen weigh?!?!?
Try the Gossamer Gear 1/8 inch pad at 3 oz. Also, a smart water bottle weighs less than a Nalgene. Great video!
Genius use of those tent stakes!
Sometimes you have to get creative in the backcountry...😅
Subscribed. The apple whiskey sold me XD
I was surprised. I took out all the stuff sacks, compression sacks and pack cover then went to (a way too expensive) dyneema 23g pack liner and weighed all the old stuff sacks together - over 750g. Crazy savings.
I bought the waymark 28LT lite, I’m doing the pct this March with a 6 pounds base weight
Nice!
You could cut the corners off your foam sleeping pad similar to the shape of your inflatable to save a bit of weight.
On the pct alcohol stoves aren't allowed because it's an open flame. I had one on the TA tho and loved it's feather weight.
@GlockTard Nope. All stoves on the PCT need a regulator during fire season, you need to be able to turn off the flame. The concern is open flame being accidentally kicked over or otherwise setting off a fire, everything is so brushy and dry that it takes just a second or two in the right conditions to start a forest fire. And the land managers do give tickets or sometimes a ride to jail.
Definitely save another 1/3 pound by trading the nalgene for smart water bottle.
That's definitely an option. We do try to eliminate any single-use plastic products when we can, though. A CNOC is a good alternative!
@@Terradrift absolutely, although you would be surprised at the durability of a smart water bottle. I have 2, 1.5s and a 20oz I've used for almost 3 years now. As long as you're sort of observant and don't drop them on rocks they're actually quite good.
Fancee Feast alcohol stove saved the day last trip when my canister stove wouldn’t work below freezing even though I kept the canister in my sleeping bag at night. Built in pot stand, easy to make with a Fancy Feast cat food can, part of a small tomato paste can, and some fiberglass tape as a wick.
Yes! Love my fancee feast! So light, so quiet, so cheeeep!
Or carbon felt as a wick...i found works even better
I got those mayfly, and as soon as I got to camp I regretted having them. I accidentally kicked a rock at camp and put them back in the closet and never touched them again. Those mayfly camp shoes are a good way to end up miles in the back country with a broken toe.
😧
Just clip a pair of crocs to the outside of your pack 🤷♂️
@@Finarvas I had clipped crocs to my bag before buying mayflies and continue to do so. Crocs are comfortable, durable, and protect your feet.
Light, compressible, warm, AND vegan?? What a cool sleeping quilt 👀
I know, right?! So impressive! (Seriously though…) 😂
There's no such thing... Look at it. It's literally three times larger when packed than an equivalent down quilt.
You do you. If you want to carry it, go for it. But the presenter is overselling that particular bit of gear by a lot.
Also, you'd probably be better off making it yourself. It will take all of an hour and cost a $50. $200 for the basic Apex insulation quilt is ridiculous, EE is printing money on that one.
@Arrynek01 I made my own 15-degree down quilt, and the down was so expensive there was zero cost savings. But tailoed to my smaller size.. The companies can get bulk deals. ...But for synthetic, it would surely be less expensive... For the down, I made 3" baffles, and that was a bit more time-consuming, but yeah, a no sew thru apex would be much easier.
@@Arrynek01 where do I look for the materials to make a quilt? thanks
An ultralight thruhike gearlist would may be interesting (let's say... 200nights, 4season? As a challenge😉)
I'm new. Just sub'd. Love the vid. Def. a fan of the ultralight. Love the pot stand idea !!~
Well, welcome! Hope to see you around the comments more often!
Comfortable pillows is where the entire world of ultralight camping breaks down. Someone really needs to figure out a way to make this actually work. I must have a good 30 travel pillows and they all suck.
I’m female and have a small head, I always get a cranked neck from those inflatable pillows, no matter how much air I let out. I ended up using one of my stuff sacks and put my clothes in it, it works perfect for me.
Good morning. It should be noted for the vegan folks out there who don't prefer down products (for obvious reasons) that there is available down products using down that was "self plucked" for nesting purposes. After the ducks use the farmer built nesting spots, they move on leaving down filled nests. I'd call that quite responsibly sourced and the ducks have a nesting spot for next season. The cost would reflect these products I'm sure, but at least there are responsible options if you were interested.
The plastic shoes shouldn't have gotten out of committee. I place them in the box right next to the GG crotch Pot....super funny but not so practical. Nice kit, thanks
Finally a hiking and camping channel thats not about undressed woman. This is great and happy
Yes! 🤣
I like the gear you have. This loadout makes sense only if the gear you do not have is in your boyfriend's pack. Fire, navigation, water treatment, medical, rescue signal, comms, lighting, real raingear, repairs, cutting tools, poop kits are all missing. Without his gear capabilities you could get into a dangerous situation quick fast and in a hurry. Nice light pack.
I think this items are ok but I would rather have a bit more weight with much better, stronger and more comfortable gear especially here in harsh Scottish weather! Good video to see anyway ;)
Ah yes. We've hiked in Scotland and can definitely attest to that. 😂 You need to be prepared. You'll be adding a bit more weight for proper wind and rain gear, to be sure!
Informative and beneficial video
You’re charming- I haven’t even finished the video yet but I already love you.
Stop... this is an attempt for you to get attention way more that it is because you actually care about somebody else. Disingenuous (read bald faced liar) people like you are the worst.
Jupiter completed the PCT this year with a base weight about 2lbs less.
That guy is darn minimal
@Mobile Winter Camp yeah, he uses a tarp and a thinlight pad... I can't imagine being that uncomfortable, but it seems to work for him... actually, I didn't see his kit this year. Also, on the pct, the mosquitos are brutal. I pitched my tent to eat lunch.... to me, it would be impossible with just a tarp. Also, ticks are an issue. For me, not having a net gives me the shivers. The whole pct I saw only one guy with a tarp and even he had a bivvy. But not having a tent or sleeping pad is big weight difference.
sounds as fun as strapping a bunch of helium ballons to your backpack to make it lighter
I like the joke about using sticks and fingers in the woods as "innovative" for ultralight backpacking XD
😂
I am small also, lacks very rarely fit me and i love load lifters but they Zaire not on many smaller packs that fit my body size. So frustrating!
I have those camp shoes but I am not a fan of when it’s cold and wet as well….
Great stuff,do you really need load lifters with such a light load? How is the one in rain? I have seen a few on trail, people seem to complain about water getting in with such thin material, sagging and such. I am around 12-13 pounds base weight for fall backpacking. I just can’t seem to get under 10 pounds.
My old pack was a granite gear crown 38, with pockets and extension collar 45 ish liters. It has a lightweight frame sheet.(thin plastic)2.6pounds total weight and had load lifters. It was a tall and skinny pack. It came up behind my head. I think that load lifters just pull the top closer to back not really lifting like you said. Last year I bought a hyper lite junction 2400 40 liter internal with 10 liter external pockets. 2lbs. 2 frame stays,No load lifters but the pack full barely comes over shoulders. I was nervous with no lifters but I think the fit of pack is really important and don’t miss them. Alot of times pack is rolled down to the shoulder straps,no place for them. Thanks for replying.
Concerned about reusing contact solution bottle to carry alcohol... seems like a recipe for disaster... unless you remove all markings of contact solution and remark bottle clearly as to it's contents... love the ltwt of an alcohol stove however if there is a campfire restriction it cannot be legally used... a BRS stove weigh 26g... of course like the alcohol stove you will need to carry fuel... but it is legal to use campfire restriction or not...
No bear spray for predator encounters (mountain lions, bears, drug runners, etc...)?
Come to the west coast that looks like farmland 😅😊
Love backpacking on the west coast! This kit was tested in Arkansas, so...you're not far off, lol.
Just found this channel, as a vegan planning to get into Backpacking this summer I will be watching all your videos.
Yay! Glad you found us! Hope you find tons of helpful information!
Using tent stakes as a pot stand can ruin the temper of the metal and make your stakes weak. Lost a couple good MSR groundhogs to this sadly. Also alcohol stoves are really not a weight savings after a couple meals worth of fuel. Canister stoves are pretty efficient for anything over a couple days
Should do cold soak instead of bringing a stove.
14:45 4g doesn't = 1.25 oz.
😂 Yes indeed
Vegan....! I'd have never guessed.. 😂
😜
Just gonna put a little bit in huuuuurrrrrr. LOL
Camping in the dork.
Why are people buying /bringing pillows when everyone has a sleepi ng bag stuff sack?
I often use a stuff sack full of clothes as my pillow, but that does require that you packed more than one extra shirt...which I probably didn't...😂
pour it in after heating the cider... cooked off the alcohol...
eschewing I SEE WHAT U DID THERE
Why don't backpackers take small tubes of toothpaste your dentist gives you for free?
Many do! I like toothpaste tabs, personally as they weigh less and I can take exactly as many as I need!
Ultralight chopsticks
I always wonder how could people carry 1.5 kg + bags
Josh just picked up an old conventional backpack today that he hasn’t used it a while and asked why it was so heavy. 🤣
You have the absolute prettiest smile

Here i am with my average 10-15KG backpack gear 🤣 ~ in Taiwan there is a few hikes that lasts for a few 5-9 days where you will NOT find food source or WATER source. You either carry yourself everything at the begin or you do not go.
Who is this guy?
She brought a Nalgene and prefers a whole tooth brush 🤮
Ultralight hike is unsafe and risky! Stop this nonsense 🥴
🧐
i don't have patience for alcohol stoves it takes 7-10 minutes just to boil water and that's with no wind
a small gas canaster weights about the same but a lot faster 2-4 minutes for water to boil
so if your going ultralight then time might be a factor think how far you can get in those extra minutes
OR Helium is overpriced trash. That thing will wet out in 20 minutes in a downpour.
Agree. Mine didn't last 5 minutes in the shower. I tried many. Settled on Frogtoggs large mens 5.5 oz., (I am 5'-7" 175 lbs, very fit) which fits over me and my pack for complete waterproof. I also take a 2 oz rain kilt; she has no rain protection below the waist
Purchased mine in 2017... along with Zpacks Rain Kilt and Gaitors... my rain kit comes out 10 oz...wife uses the same... been great... PNW hikers...
@@m.guysantiago1321 Heliu keeps out rain for about 30 minutes if its light and 15 minutes if its heavy. It's not remotely waterproof.
