    In the musical Glinda is wealthy but in the orginal novel she's more of a social climber from a family with a good name and little money like Snow. A good comparison.

    Elphie was a girl rejected by EVERYONE. Her dad, sister, society...
    I see people wonder why she was attached to Glinda, some assume that she had feelings for her, but the truth is simpler than that. She was starving for love and affection, so she stuck to the first person to give her any.
    She didn't realized that Glinda wasn't a good friend for her, because she NEVER had friend before AND because comparatively to others, she truly treated her the best.
    Also, about the Glinda becomes better argument, did she? Had the wizard truly been powerful and if Elphie didn't sacrifice herself, would she have done what she did in the end?

      @@jlog3540 The bear nanny is not in the story anymore, right?
      And the love of a nanny can't replace the love of a family member or a friend of the same age, but I agree at least she received the love of her nanny

    Thank you! Im also tired of being gaslit about Glinda's feelings for Elphaba. Imo, they exist but they are never allowed to override her sense of self-preservation AND her prejudices about her marginalisation. Love is more than lip-service, it's an action and Glinda's actions are louder than words!!!

    To build over the Glinda narrative!!
    At the beginning of act one we are theoretically at the furthest point in time in the wicked universe. The wizard is uncovered, elphaba is “melted” and the new system is established
    What glinda is doing is genuinely a press tour to obtain power and control - basically replace the wizard
    Hence same as in hunger games, the old system is taken down but the new system is the same exact more polished version of it

    I’ve been saying this! Like I think Glinda is a great character. But she’s not this pure heart that never realized how her actions are harmful. She knows what she’s doing. At the very least she’s comfortable with her ignorance. And at her worst she chooses to ignore and even stand with oppressors. I understand that she grows as a person but I don’t think it’s enough to say that she’s not trying to remain on top.
    Edit: I completely agree that they don’t seem like they can be friends with people. I don’t understand how the relationship between Glinda and Elphaba is so loved! The way she talks to her in the beginning of the movie would have made me hate her guts!!

      @MoonlightBrillance 13 дней назад +2

      Same! I really didn’t buy their close friendship like everyone else does, or at least thought it was much more complex than people give it credit for. Elphaba is very kind and forgiving person to allow Glinda to become as big a part of her life as she did.

    it's so interesting to see people reject what's basically glinda's entire plot in the musical (specifically, as her character has less autonomy in the books)-- finally choosing to be good and do the right thing after two acts of being a bystander at the least and a participant at the most in the villain's plans and actions. wicked's themes and narrative is fun to dissect and analyze because even at the more simplified level of the musical there's a lot to explore and discuss, but it's hard to do that when a chunk of the audience rejects one of the basic premises of the story

    • @yaboiiyadudee3644
      @yaboiiyadudee3644 8 дней назад

      i suppose i can see *why* it happened-- the musical was already a streamlined, simplified adaptation of the book, and choices in the movie tweaked the characters in a way that i think would genuinely change people's perceptions of them if they've only watched the movie. it's setting the stage for a more right-and-wrong, black-and-white, absolutist interpretation of wicked and with that in mind i can see why people would be resistant to the idea of glinda as a bad guy. i just don't like it.

    At first, it seems like it's about HOW you do/say something in Oz. G(a)linda never joins Elphaba because Elphaba is unapologetically rebellious and upfront. She's ostracized, and Ozian mentality sees Galinda as an amazing person because she's tolerating/trying to change Elphaba. Even G(a)linda herself isn't aware that she's being hurtful or condescending because in Oz, she comes off as charitable and good to those who share her views. Elphaba is not only different, but doesn't carry G(a)linda's pretense or decorum, making her unlikeable to everyone.
    But then it hits: even if Elphaba TRIED to present G(a)linda presents does--sweet, obedient, helpful--the moment she disagreed with the Wizard even a little, all of Oz would turn against her. Conformity can create a sense of belonging--but if you don't conform, you don't belong. G(a)linda could never accept not belonging, but Elphaba never felt like she belonged, so it wasn't as much of an issue for her to rebel; if anything, being ostracized made her feel validated when she rebelled.

    I think the way the worlds they grew up in shaped the ways they become compliant to the system (and eventually leads it it corios case). I will say that Glinda is rebellious within her elevated position in the system. To me, hers is a story of someone set up to be the ultimate Ozian becomes a disillusioned puppet. She understands that she has been wicked and goodness knows the wickeds lives are lonely as she says. The redemption arc is subtle but shes very human. Most of us would not have the power to rebel in her position especially with her lack of magic

    To be fair unlike Glinda, Coriolanus was fighting against actual stakes. The system of Pannem was very different from Oz, it didn’t allow for many mistakes and true empathy was a rare commodity, viewed as weakness evidenced through the deaths of Rue, Prim, and Sejanus. Despite being from the Capitol, Coriolanus had experienced poverty that was on par with what most Districts were facing, he was in danger of losing his family home and having the remnants of his family live on the streets, and on the verge of what should have been his victory, he lost and became a Peacekeeper, and unlike Sejanus, Coriolanus did not have the luxury of high minded ideals. When he saw Sejanus befriending potential rebels it wasn’t from a holier than though attitude that he expressed concern. Keep in mind that even though Sejanus was technically a capitol boy with money and influence the Peacekeepers gave him no trial to defend himself and just sent him to hang, even Coriolanus was shocked that it happened so suddenly.

    This movie was my first introduction to the Wicked universe and throughout the movie, I did NOT buy that Glinda had a switch/change of heart and actually became Elphaba's friend. Idk, they didn't do enough (in my opinion) to make it known that their friendship becomes deep and real. So I wasn't surprised nor heartbroken when Glinda doesn't join Elphaba at the end if the movie.

    Glinda was trying to play the long game, she tells Elpheba "maybe you're not as powerful as you think you are", but she herself thinks she's capable of changing anyone's mind/acomplish anything through politics and her social intelligence, she also thinks she's more powerful than she actually is. Let's remember they were very young and had no life experience, in such a high speed/high risk situation they went back to their default strategies, literally fight/flight and fawn (I don't agree with either of them, and I can't see how things could have gone differently in that moment/stage of growth).

    Honestly ever since the movie came out I've been loving the think pieces that truly criticize and dissect Glinda because when I watched the musical online, I was way too invested in shipping Glinda and Elphaba to realize how messed up Glinda really is. Her lines and songs are framed as comedic and endearing but when you really lay it all out as it is she really doesn't look 'good'. I don't know if the writer intended for her to come off so poorly considering the heartfelt farewell between her and Elphaba at the end but he really did a great job creating a polarizing character.

    Glinda and Taka are very similar. Entitled but untalented. High and unearned position in society, that they are unqualified for. Entitled over man/woman. Their “friend/brother” are not their equal, but their servants/project.

    Completely agree with this! Ever since I saw the movie, I couldn’t unsee how Glinda represented something far more insidious than Wicked part 1 was willing to explore (in my opinion). I didn’t quite see the Coriolanus comparison at first but after watching your video I totally see it. Glinda in many ways feels like the hyper feminine girly pop (and therefore much more palatable) version of Coriolanus.
    Glad I found this video, I was definitely feeling a little alone in feeling like this about Glinda because of how Wicked has been marketed and because of how a lot of fans of the movie/musical tend to talk about the Glinda + Elphaba relationship.

    Honestly I know in wicked children don't technically get murdered but she does participate in a government that does murder people unnecessarily. And in the books it's even worse so. There may not be a hunger games in wicked but the children are not growing up in a safe world that's for sure. Also they are really similar and I never would have thought of comparing them. Thank you. Also I don't think she is a master manipulator because she's so transparent but if someone wasn't paying attention I guess she is You know what I'm saying?

    i cant speak on this Coriolanus Snow fellow, I not into to hunger games. You have slightly misunderstood Glinda and I think people have done you disservice by telling you that "she gets better in the second movie" because you misunderstood alot of her actions in the first movie.
    One take that really stick out to me is your take on name change as an overall social action when thats not true its was actually to get affection for Elphaba and Firyero who up until invited to the emerald city had been excluding her from their activities. But that's small compared to the way you interpret popular.
    For starters, your wrong about what she says she not saying "I'm going to make you popular, just not as popular as me" she saying "you will be popular just not as quite popular as me" this is an important distinction when claiming that Glinda doesn't view Elphaba view as equal, the song popular is a instructional song and Glinda is extremely socially aware character (especially now), she recognize that people view Elphaba outside of her action so saying that Glinda doesn't view Elphaba as equal or only views Elphaba as a passion project isnt quite right.
    Then there is the way you frame Glinda betraying Elphaba is interesting cause your wrong. Like to the bone cause at no point does Glinda tell Elphaba to shut up, to have interrupted what Glinda say as that is insanely wrong . And then to look at a character who just found out that everything she been told lie, chased her friend while simultaneously being chase though an unknown place by flying monkeys and guards and then call a manipulator for telling her friend sit think about it you could be totally above your abilities which is what she was actually talking about. The upholding of the system that you talking about isnt her being manipulative its her being a scared and falling back on what she knows . cause at the end of the day she is a eighteen old with no powers and had just been arrested.
