Metal Detecting Nut, I've been metal detecting for over 40 years. Your tip on listening to the detector sound as you rotate around the target is worth its weight in gold. For a newbie, if the detector indicates a "good" target as your circle around, DIG IT! If not, FORGET IT! But if you want to really learn the finer points of operating your detector, you should dig all targets. As you gain more experience with your detector, you will learn how to interpret the really faint sounds for those deeper finds.
What I have found in the 2.5 years of using the equinox is that if I notch out any number, I take the chance of missing jewelry. I know this because friends have been right behind me. I have numbers memorized now. I dig plenty of junk, mostly aluminum, but only an occasional chunk of iron, The iron is easy to find, if you are in doubt, hit the horseshoe, iron almost always is a negative number. Aluminum caps almost always jump, not just 1 number like 19-20, but several numbers like 19-23, nowadays is factory presets, except iron bias, recovery speed
thank you so much for the tip... just bought a 800 2 weeks ago and came to you tube to figure out how to use it because yes... I was digging so many nails. With this video I just watched, hopefully not so much going forward. Awesome video, thank you for taking the time to teach us armatures how the pros do it!!! =0)
This comment is 3 years late, but I'm researching why I'm having same problem. The lone star pro from Garrett has identical characteristics. I'm gonna use your experience to help me stay sane and not dig SO MANY IRON NAILS! Thanks for posting this vid 👍
Good explanation. What you are describing - the "All the way around" idea - is not particular to the Equinox 800 - it applies to every single metal detector that I've ever used. The reason is the field the object is giving off and the way the machine's signal interacts with that field. Try it as an air test or on the surface. If you swing perpendicular to a nail, it will give you a strong tone. Swing parallel (along the length of the nail) and you'll get nothing. The exception to this rule is a bent nail - especially bent in a 90 degree angle - that will generally give you an "all the way around" signal. The other exception with a good target would be a coin standing straight up and down on edge. You would get a stronger signal one way and a weaker signal in the other direction that might fool you into thinking its iron. But as a general rule, what you've said is true - and if I'm trying to cover a lot of ground, or checking out a new site for the first time, I will rarely dig targets that don't sound consistent as you rotate around them. Cheers!
This was really helpful! I swing a 600, and took a tool out of someone else's belt, I will throw it into all metal with the horseshoe if it reads a negative it often ends up being iron as well, or the very least a nail is nestled in there too. The 360 pivot is a great way to really hone in on the target. Thank you!
Nice info! Lots of missed targets by folks not understanding that notch discrim. I always dig the iffy's and have gotten some sweet finds! Stay safe! GL&HH!
thanks there's value in any ones experience always glad to learn something new. I'm new to the nox but I got Andy Sabisch's book and it made getting used to this easier People over think these machines and start playing with the settings before they figure it out . I ran my Deus hf in factory settings for a year before changing things up
The old “turn 90 degrees” test. I’ve been using this method since I got my first explorer in 2005. Just started using the 800 more instead of my SE. I don’t notch anything out. I just turn the volume down on the iron. Good luck out there
Nice. I have an 800 coming in a couple days. I have used the SE for over 10 years and this is the technique I use. Happy to hear it’s the same for the Nox.
Good tip 👍 I’m going to use this method on a site that had homes built in the early 1900’s . I’ve found a few wheaties but not silver yet . And of course there’s lots of nails .
You are correct in my opinion as this is exactly what I do for Australian pre- decimal and decimal coins, but like everyone else I still get caught out, but not often
Valuable information. Great tip! Iffy signals are always a guess as to whether to dig them or not, especially if time is a factor. Looking forward to using this tip.
Great information. Just last week I figured out exactly what you are doing. Have you noticed if you dig a nail it is usually on the edge of the plug? Thanks for sharing
Thank you! I have 200 hours on my equinox and my prob has boiled down to two things. What disc to run and how to interpret iffy signals. I’ll be damned if you didn’t just 100% confirm what I’m discovering! I feel so much better also what’s the point in running open low # disc in a high trash area where chances are there is little to no gold...I save that for the beach. You have to pick you battles in relation to time and play the game of odds...great video!
Great info... I also use this technique on a good signal. I turn on the horseshoe all metal and listen for iron. Then i pump the spot of good signal in all metal and if I only hear iron. Then 95% time its iron. But there's that 5% it might not.. just curious what your iron bias was set to back then.
I’m thinking of getting an equinox, but haven’t decided if I want the AT Pro, or the Equinox, after seeing this video, I’m really interested in the Equinox!! Thanks for the video!
ruclips.net/video/NB5qP5ffVLI/видео.html Watch this calabash digger video and it will answer your question...he has spent thousands of hours with both machines
Try to raise the Iron biased FE all the way to 8 or 9 and see if it’s going to be better and try with all metal on so you can hear the iron , thank you for the videos my friend.
Have you tried changing Freq from multi to 10? If the numbers stay the same then it’s a coin if the numbers change then iron. Due to weather haven’t had a chance to try this out.
I have found that in my area buttons and civil war bullets ring up 14-16 as well. I dig a ton of nails... but i think i would miss alot if i notched out 14-16.
Just got me a Nox 800 and love it. Still learning. Outstanding observation when you say you gotta go all around-I found this to be true as well. Given the nox has various modes. Do you think this applies to beaches as well? Appreciate your perspective. Mike
That’s a great point!! I’ve had my 800 for a couple of weeks and have found the same thing!! The tid is definitely not as good as my extrac but overall it’s a good detector! Thanks for the vid it confirms what I thought I already knew lol
Great tip thank you for sharing it,been detecting for years, have 5 different detectors just bought the equinox 800,I’m really impressed with it,finding a lot of coins need to work on jewelry anymore advice for the equinox?thanks again 😊
Hi, I have been hunting the same abandoned fairgrounds for over 30 years. It ran for approximately 50-55 years. Mid 1800's to early 1900's . I have used the updated iron bias program. I have several large buildings that caught fire , so I fight nails upon nails. Are you using the f2 update? I couldn't tell if you had your iron disc. on or off. Also are you using field 1 or 2 ? And what are you using for a sweep recovery speed? The method you describe does work. 90 -95% of the time. But in heavy concentrations it will miss things. I grabbed a half dime and a seated dime within 15 minutes of each other where when rotated 90° the signal disappeared, I've also used the 6" on the 800, that is an incredible loop. Also, I have found corroded large cents and IHP will give you a broken signal in a circle sweep . Great informative video , thanks for posting.
I've found coins on edge when only getting a signal one direction ( between the 90° approach, if you spin 180° and get a signal also, it could be coin on edge.)
One thing I notice is on the good wheat cent you vdi was jumping from 19 to just about 30! Odd that the equinox does not lock on more...especially when they put the tid numbers so tight on the coins...
Two years later and this is still very valuable information.
Just got my equinox 800.

PS - This all applies with no notching as well - no need to do any notching as far as I'm concerned.
this was an excellent post thank you
Thanks, great tip. I having been digging all those old nails and its very frustrating digging 20 to one. Good video. Keep them coming.
Very useful info for beginner metal detector hobbyists like me.. Greetings from Indonesia 👍👍👍

I've also found that if you pump the coil over a target it will usually throw negative numbers if it's iron as well. Such a great, but weird machine.
Nice info! Lots of missed targets by folks not understanding that notch discrim. I always dig the iffy's and have gotten some sweet finds! Stay safe! GL&HH!

THANK YOU! I’ve been finding the same thing with the iffy and disappearing signals so it is great to have this validation, so I can dig fewer nails.
Thank you for your video ! , I would like to see more of your experiences with the Equinox 800 , thanks again !!!
I’m taking a day to just chill so basically I am watching all you videos thanks

New subscriber, great channel! ❤ Thanks for an entertaining and informative vid from fellow RUclipsr metal detectorists in Buffalo, NY. ⛏️💍💰 🇺🇲
Great job and excellent demonstration!
Well said, good video on explaining. It took me about 6 months to figure it out.
Great video. I'm considering the Equinox 900. This will help greatly.
Good tip 👍
I’m going to use this method on a site that had homes built in the early 1900’s . I’ve found a few wheaties but not silver yet . And of course there’s lots of nails .
Good tip, I'll give it a try. I'm one of those frustrated 800 owners.
Get the equinox handbook by andy sabisch, helped me out a lot. RUclips taught me a bit about the machine too.
You are correct in my opinion as this is exactly what I do for Australian pre- decimal and decimal coins, but like everyone else I still get caught out, but not often
Thankyou for the advice. Had my 800 around 3 weeks . Great mashine . Doesn't miss a thing . Out Tom can't wait . Thanks again. 👍👊👌
Thanks. Great tips. I'm kind of a newbie. So I appreciate your help.
Very kewl tip 😊👍🏼👏👏👏
Thanks for those tips. About to make the transition from the AT pro to a Eq800 and I'm going to need all the info I can. Great job
Just picked up a 600 i will be aware while using it. I love REAL tips on using the equipment. They dont come with very detailed instructions
Thanks for the tip, we're going to try it out.
Wow thank you. I just got a nox 800 that helped
Very helpful,do those settings work on the beach as well???
good info I have seen people pump the metal detector to also eliminate iron
Valuable information. Great tip! Iffy signals are always a guess as to whether to dig them or not, especially if time is a factor. Looking forward to using this tip.
Superbly done. Great tips and examples. Thanks
Great video! Thanks😊go over settings😊
seeing you using equinox, I became excited to hunt ,,
This is a good tip..
Thank you!!
good info. that's the rule I use too. as my friend calls it do the Mexican hat dance. new subber!
Definitely digging less iron. But not less pull tabs and beaver tails
I tried it and it works for me! Thanks!
*_Just ordered one- interesting tip._*
Great information. Just last week I figured out exactly what you are doing. Have you noticed if you dig a nail it is usually on the edge of the plug? Thanks for sharing
Roger Bublitz, Yes many times it is on the edge
Great Work my friend, nice video🤟☝️☝️🍻🍻🍻Greetings fron South America🇨🇱🇨🇱🌿

I’ve noticed relic hunting that more times then not that a lot of chirpy broken signals have had something good very close to iron
Great info... I also use this technique on a good signal. I turn on the horseshoe all metal and listen for iron. Then i pump the spot of good signal in all metal and if I only hear iron. Then 95% time its iron. But there's that 5% it might not.. just curious what your iron bias was set to back then.

Equinox 800 all the way. I had a Pro and would never go back

Watch this calabash digger video and it will answer your question...he has spent thousands of hours with both machines
Hi, great video, thanks for sharing! Just subscribed. Wanted to ask, what recovery speed/iron bias setting you using? Thanks again!
Thank you for sharing this experience with us , what are the settings kn your device ? Can you please make a video about the settings . Thank you
Good tip buddy, Your right,, works very well 👍
A bottle cap gives a good signal right around just because of its shape.
Good video. Well done. New sub from the uk
I have found that in my area buttons and civil war bullets ring up 14-16 as well. I dig a ton of nails... but i think i would miss alot if i notched out 14-16.
14-16 is huge in the gold range
Just got me a Nox 800 and love it. Still learning. Outstanding observation when you say you gotta go all around-I found this to be true as well. Given the nox has various modes. Do you think this applies to beaches as well? Appreciate your perspective. Mike
Great info and demo!! Thanks!!
Thanks for the tip 👍🇬🇧

Good tips, I will try them.
Very good informative video. Than you so much.
Thank very much for the tip, does this work on any progam or is it just on the program you have set up. Thanks
Great tip. Thanks for the info
excenet , thanks..
saludos desde chile
Thanks for the information. Could you tell us what settings you were working with?
I will see what I have.
Setting? Thanks
Same here. Hope to hear back. Thank u
3 and a bit years on .now in milti do ya like the 4KHZ
What were your settings for this video? And thanks for the tip I’m going to try this
Why not switch to all metal mode when you get an iffy signal? Isn't that what it's there for?
Great information this help a lot 👍🏼
Good tips. Thank you
Great video and tips! Could you possibly share your iron and trash settings?
Hola amigo me suscribo a tu canal interesantes hallazgos saludos de Canarias🙋♂️🇮🇨
These look like good settings for over in the states - Would not dare do this in the UK though.
Great tip thank you for sharing it,been detecting for years, have 5 different detectors just bought the equinox 800,I’m really impressed with it,finding a lot of coins need to work on jewelry anymore advice for the equinox?thanks again 😊
Great tip !
Where can I find this magical dirt?
lol
Great info
Are these old fairground areas not scattered with lead airgun pellets from the shooting galleries ?
Can you tell me your settings? I Would Like to try it out ! Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Nice Tip
Please tell me it also works with aluminum
Thank you!
When people say it’s choppy I allways picture the waves crashing as it’s a term we use as it looks choppy out at sea

I have the Vanquish 540 and have noticed the same behavior applies to that the vanquish too.
Interesting. I wonder if is some new technology that Mine Lab is using.
@@metaldetectingnut4839 the Vanquish for me works the same, it's them bent 90' nails that will get ya
This is exactly the problem I recently had. Thanks that's pinpointed the issue no pun intented.👍
It is good to do this when you are in a field that is full of nails. But still i hope you dont miss the gold mate. 😉
What did you have your iron bias on
Excelente video. Muchas felicidades y pasamos a suscribirnos.
Saludos desde Chihuahua México.
What shovel are you using?
Great tip video!
One thing I notice is on the good wheat cent you vdi was jumping from 19 to just about 30! Odd that the equinox does not lock on more...especially when they put the tid numbers so tight on the coins...
Thank you very good vid !!!!!
I found a anglo saxon sceatt and it came in at number 6
Cool video bud, i gave ya a sub, happy digging ,norcal
Where’d ya get that shovel?
Noticed you are in park 2. Any other adjustments? you have all upgrades installed?
Will a coin on its edge give you a sound similar to the nail or will it still give you a signal all around?
Ive dug wheaties with signal going one way
