Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We also do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.

Welcome to a new rabbit hole Carl. Good overview and the 40 Watt system looks very capable. The lasers coming out from many of the vendors are scary good mechanically; looks like Creality is one of those. One of the main reasons I got into lasers was to embellish and sign turned objects -- have only done that a few times so far and have yet to connect the rotary -- there have been so many other things to do with the system. 😄 Several other folks worth watching: Steve at Ventauri's Workshop and Dave Clackley at The Clack Shack both have RUclips channels and also co-host a Sunday evening livestream where they provide live answers to questions from people on the livestream. Also, Hobo with Wood has a channel and does some interesting projects. Build Dad Build is another good resource.

Your closing comments reflect what I have been thinking about this also, (as a wood turner). I’ll be looking forward to see what you can do with it. Thanks for sharing!

Great review Carl! So many possibilities to combine lasers and woodworking or turning. From embellishment to patterns or names and dates! The Niles Mandril fits perfect for bottle stoppers or handles! So many things!

As hobby lasers get above 10 watts, the importance of the enclosure gets more and more important. While these lasers run on 110, their actual power draw is quite low. If you have a 1kw power bank like a Jackery, you can run your laser all afternoon in the parking lot of the craft faire.

Carl, if you wanted to engrave your logo on the bottom of say, a 6” or deeper bowl, is it possible to elevate the laser enough, without a lot of messing around?
