  • In this video I discuss a few options on how to mount a StarLink Satellite dish on my Jeep and ultimately the option that I chose.
    I briefly interview Brandon Walsh, the owner of Star-Mount Systems, a company that has developed several mounts and modifications for the StarLink series of satellite dishes that allow for several different mounting options on your vehicles.
    The video includes a demonstration of what is involved in removing the rear of the dish and installing it in one of the Star-Mount System panels.
    This video is not sponsored by Star Mount Systems and I purchased the mount myself.
    If you decide to do this modification on your own dish, please know that it will void your warranty.
    star-mountsystems.com/
    This modification is also a great advantage when I participate in my Ham Radio Parks On The Air POTA activity. DE. WW9I

    What a Great Set up. I was unaware you could make phone calls through it. That is a game changer for me because in Australia some of the places i often go there is Zero phone service for many hours. I have put of buying a sat phone, to date I can make calls through my HF radio, but of course I have to have signal to a base to be able to do so. I may now seriously look into doing this & a 12 volt system would also be the go! Cheers!

    What he called a big magnet is actually a ferrite ring that keeps radio frequencies from traveling up the wire. You actually do need that specially with the different radio frequencies coming from an automobile

    • @jeepNtreetop
      @jeepNtreetop  Год назад +9

      I caught that in the description when Brandon was removing it. As a amateur radio operator I am plenty familiar with ferrite rings since we use them all the time. In this application I am guessing that it was intended to prevent RF noise when the motors are engaged, but since we removed the motors and potentially the source of the RF interference, the core is no longer needed.

    • @jmoss99
      @jmoss99 Год назад +4

      Same here in WA6 land. I saw that. It never hurts to have lots of ferrite filters. That is a RF PC board connecting to the car power supply.

    Nice video, thank you! ... My experience is that the Starlink proprietary STX connectors might not be as waterproof as many hope. In my case, about 3 weeks after I flat mounted my Dishy in the Starmount flat mount low profile, my system stopped working after a night with heavy rain. I then replaced the STX connectors with a waterproof RJ-45 coupler, which brought the system back to life. Thus my suggestion would be to consider a mount with a truely waterproof connector/coupler from a very beginning. Starmount's "all in one" model for example seemingly has such a connector.

    • @jeepNtreetop
      @jeepNtreetop  Год назад +1

      So you cut the Starlink connector off and exited the Star-Mount with a pigtail?
      In my case I filled the two little holes at the top of the Starlink connector with dielectric grease and then ran a piece of heat shrink over the top. So far it has been working well, going on almost a year.

    • @michaelmeier5619
      @michaelmeier5619 Год назад

      @@jeepNtreetop At the moment my situation is still improvised as I have not found a waterproof RJ-45 coupler that can be easily diretcly mounted to the low profile Starmount. So at the moment I have the white dishy internal ethernet cable exit the Starmount through the hole and temporarily sealed the hole with the cable inside it. Yes, STX connectors were cut off and RJ-5 connectors crimped on, now inside a waterproof Rj-45 coupler. Can send a photo if of interest ...

    That's a workable solution but where I take my 4X4 RV the dish would be broken off the mounting brackets after 250 miles of rocky dirt roads. I chose to get the click-in bracket (Amazon) on the end of the 3ft pole I mounted permanently on my RV ladder. Need internet, slide the dish out of the outside storage cabinet, click into the end of the pole and plug into the permanently mounted SL cable.
    Since SL requires nearly 100% line of sight I ordered another extra long SL cable if my rig doesn't have line of sight I throw it on the ground and set the dish 75ft away from the rig in clear line of sight.
    Better than moving the rig depending where I'm camping.

    • @jeepNtreetop
      @jeepNtreetop  Год назад

      Tim, that is certainly a workable solution that you describe. I have another quick release bracket in the works and will be mounting it in the back on my Jeep. This way if I need to place the dish away from the Jeep, I just need to pop it out and place it where it has a clear view of the sky.

Did you do a permanent install or configurable to remove wire/cable in case you need to move the dish to get a clear view of the sky? Trying to figure out wiring onto the roof without having to buy another cable on my overlanding truck rig.

    • @jeepNtreetop
      @jeepNtreetop  Год назад +1

      Thanks Alex, Brandon is a cool dude, isn’t he? in the video I simply routed the cable through the door seal (in the Jeep it’s real easy). I did however find and bought bulkhead connectors that pass the shield through the cable and will be showing those in my next video. I’ll have to cut the cable to install them. But for now I’m just running the cable through the door. Brandon sells a quick release mount that I have so my dish will be mounted semipermanently in that mount on the back of my rig with a short cable going into the Jeep and 12v router.
      Then if needed, I can snap the dish off the mount, add an extension cable, and place it in an unobtrusive location.

      The dish is press fit in the enclosure and is a very tight fit. The lid holds it down as and makes it water and airtight. So far there has not been an issue with the hundreds of units out in the field, including the one that is mounted to the designer’s Baja 500 race car. If his unit can survive the torture of Baja race, I figure it can withstand anything I’ll ever put mine through.

      Those Sea Sucker suction cups are the real deal! They have a pump on them with an indicator, so if they ever start to loose suction, you just push the plunger a couple of times and you’re good to go!

    Two questions:
    1. Does Starlink dishes need to face the satellites all the time? With the dish fixed on the hood, it won't be able to move to face the satellites.
    2. I heard that Starlink RV version is portable but not mobile. Will it work while driving down the road?

    • @jeepNtreetop
      @jeepNtreetop  Год назад +1

      The dish works perfectly fine pointing straight up at the sky. The Starlink dish uses a phased array system to “point” at the satellites.
      And I subscribe to the RV service and it works while I am driving down the road. The dish itself has a gps receiver internally so it is programmed to turn off at above 80mph which is not an issue for most RVs

    17:30 not a magnet (not magnetic), ferrite bead filters out EMI or noise

  • @greglanduyt1317
    @greglanduyt1317 9 месяцев назад

    This guy has know idea what he is doing. The part where here broke what he called a magnet and it wasn't needed. That was a ferrite chock which is used to filter out noise and rf interference.

    • @jeepNtreetop
      @jeepNtreetop  9 месяцев назад +1

      First, learn how to spell before you criticize others. Apparently you have no clue, that ferrite is to shield noise while the motors are in motion and since we removed the motors, the ferrite is then therefore no longer needed. We have thousands of units in the field with these ferrites removed.

    Great video. How do you deal with “alignment” with the satellite while in motion? My Starlink dish is mounted on my back deck and has to be perfectly positioned for a full signal. I don’t understand how it works mobile!

    • @jeepNtreetop
      @jeepNtreetop  11 месяцев назад

      The dish uses a Phased array so it just needs to be pointed straight up with a clear view of the sky with zero obstructions. It doesn’t have to be “pointed” at the satellites.

    If that twisted white cable running from the connector is coaxial i would be worried about its performance, having been so twisted. Coaxial cable has dimensions that must be maintained to properly conduct, contain, and protect radio frequencies (the carrier frequency)...I'm not even half way through the vid yet so...let's see how well it tests out. 🤔 Well @ 16:45 We get a gander at the innards of that white sheath and its not coaxial, but still so much twist...🤨 untwisting it was a great idea, let's see the test 😕

    • @jeepNtreetop

      It tested out ok and works great! What had happened was that prior to this video I had the dish plugged in and sitting upside down in the back of my Jeep overnight so apparently it was rotating the motors trying to find a signal. So the base was just twisting causing the cable to twist….

      None whatsoever. It has plenty of airflow underneath the panel. Nor do I have any issues with the windscreen obscuring the sky. It’s been working very well now in its current location for almost a year without a hitch. I do check the suction cups frequently though, but that’s easy enough since they have an indicator on the pump when they start to loose suction and I’m looking right at them while I’m driving. I’ve never had one completely loose suction. A couple of pumps every time I get gas is all it takes.
