Good info. Weirdly the daily player count is way different than sales numbers. Steam charts daily players rough numbers has MK1 at 2k, Tek8 at maybe 6k, SF6 over 12k sometimes quadrupling Tek8's numbers.
MK1 was already over 3 million copies sold by the time it was released on Switch, and it couldn't even move the needle to the 4M mark. Strive has a dedicated Switch version as well and it did jack s**t for the total sales of the game. My point being, don't expect a SW2 version of T8 to push the game past SF6, let alone MK1.
I would love it if they eventually do a Tekken 8, v2.0 where they just make huge balance changes and make defensive options more viable and make no character very much stronger than any other. It'll never be perfectly balanced but it could be like 80-90% balanced.

To say “Tekken 8 still hasn’t sold 3 million copies” is to make a statement without having all the available information. Let’s be fair, Tekken has not reported their sales. This could be due to lack of sales, but it could ALSO be the case that they just choose not to report the sales for other reasons. The DLC seems to be killing it, the numbers are consistently above the 10k mark for just Steam.

Meanwhile MK1 is currently sitting at under 2k. SF6 is sitting just above 12k. By these numbers alone, Tekken 8 is doing ok. These numbers don’t even include console figures, which is where the majority of the player base is.
Tekken 8 was a game with a really good start. People saw that it wasn't as greedy as the other ones which lead to more hype. Then all of a sudden, just out of nowhere: BAM! Cash shop, microtransactions, battle pass. On top of that, it wasn't as well functional as SF, it had crashes, it had more lag and other technical issues. With SF6 you knew what you were buying from the beginning, it was already known that there will be cash shop and microtransactions. But Tekken 8 pulled out the scummiest move possible.
i think part of the reason why people prefer SF and MK besides the platforms, are the system requirement and game size. I've seen Tekken 8 content creators that have potato pc/laptop, so they have to lower the graphics to ulq in order to play while record the game. me myself I can't run full ultra even with rtx 3060 (laptop). secondly, if you're a newcomer to the fgc and have limited storage like me, why would you reserve 100+ GB for tekken when you can download 2 fighting games for approximately the same storage size? i still picked tekken cuz I was playing it as a kid in ps2, also because of the character customization. if SF had the same character customization as tekken I'd probably bought SF.
Welp, Tekken 8 has lots to climb on. Yes the fact that it got released on only 3 platform compared to MK1 and SF6 selling on 4 platform each is indeed a factor, but it's also what the product has to offer. MK1 has tons of single player content, SF6 while having worse SP content and also broken Ranked, still has the quantity, and both games have rollback netcode. Tekken 8 has none of that, and that's why it is way behind.
MK1 content is pretty trash and not worth the rewards you get compared to previous MK games. Nobody gives af about Kameos or characters you can’t even use as main fighter. As someone that plays gear sf and Tekken i can sum it up where sf not only has the name recognition (and especially now due to vtubers does very well in jp), but also is much more intuitive in that early to mid skill range. Tekken is easy to pick up also, but the moment you want to do anything more than very basics (such as any kind of defense) its got this impenetrable wall. Tekken has so much baggage thats been built up over the years, some animations where it looks high is mid, then mid goes high, the entire throw system literally takes years to get decent at - ill be honest, throws alone is a huge turn off because theres no color coded no audio no nothing, sometimes the animations that you have to quickly parse are nearly identical. It certainly doesn't help that the game is 60fps with taa which makes it very blurry. All in all, id say the tekken team has chose the wrong approach to help nooba - instead of giving heat nonsense they shouldve fundamentally rethought some animations (such as in Leo), maybe even made the throw system a bit easier to distinguish, and overall things like no replay in endmatch screen and lack of intuitive feedback during the round is also a problem.
