  • The M1 carbine (formally the United States Carbine, Caliber .30, M1) is a lightweight, easy to use, .30 caliber semi-automatic carbine that was a standard firearm for the U.S. military during World War II, the Korean War and well into the Vietnam War. The M1 carbine was produced in several variants and was widely used by not only the U.S. military, but by military, paramilitary and police forces around the world. It has also been a popular civilian firearm.

      I hear that 200yds plus has severe bullet drop? Doing some sims states about 94.3cm drop assuming 100m convergence. That's about 14 minutes of angle.

      @rhys modica yea I have heard that to. But unless you actually try it, you'll never know. The weapon has a max range at 300yrds. Effective range 100 to 200yrds, I could have been in that 200yard range,

    Just to clarify for people, the M1 carbine is not just a smaller M1 grand. While both are rotating bolt and have similar charging handles. They where devloped indeptently and have differences in the Operating mechanism.
    Just fyi since the video kinda makes it sounds like they are a common platform when it says the manuals called for grease not oil.

    Clearly the predecessor to the mini 14 system. "maybe" Bill Ruger didnt realize it when he had the m14 scaled down to 5.56. But considering who he had do the actual work id have to assume they knew what they wrre working torwards. either way this idea must have been the best solution to the problem; especially if 2 engineering teams came up with nearly identical solutions.

    How much trouble would it be to convert this to the .17 or .22 caliber wildcat versions? And is this called a blowback action design?

    • @pyro1047
      @pyro1047 Год назад

      No, while there's different kinds blowback means the weapon is cycled by gas pressure pushing directly backwards on the bolt. Like most open bolt SMG's like the MP-40, MP-18, PPsH, etc. The early Thompsons are actually delayed-blowback, until finally simplified to regular blowback with the M1/M1A1. Then there's Roller-Delayed blowback, which the MG42 and H&K G3 use.
      The M1/2/3 uses a gas "Tap-It" design to cycle the action. When the gun fires a small hole in the barrel is right up against a tiny piston that barely moves, just enough to sharply "tap" a piston cup attached to the bolt carrier hard enough to cycle the weapon, differing it enough to be it's own thing and not a typical "Short-Stroke Gas Piston" either.

    • @pyro1047
      @pyro1047 Год назад

      And .30 Carbine is more comparable to .357, than .17 or .22. So while possible, you'd have to redesign the gas system so those cartridges have enough gas and power to reliably cycle the action which could be a lot of work. You'd also need to redesign the magazines to seat the new rounds at the correct angle to feed properly. Same for the feed-ramp if the gun has one (Can't remember).
      It'd probably be easier with the .22 version to just redesign it to actually be direct blowback. But you might need a heavier bolt designed for it so it doesn't open prematurely.
      However I'm not a gunsmith, so it's entirely possible none of what I said required and could easily be done.

    Sooo is it short stroke, long stroke, or DI? Cuz to me it seems like its TECHNICALLY DI

    • @afelias
      @afelias 3 года назад

      It's short stroke. There's a gas piston at the bottom that moves the bolt carrier proper. DI implies that the gas reaches the bolt itself.

    So, how does it work? Why is there no breakdown of the different systems? I see the gas ejection system on the bottom, but how does the locking bolt work?

    • @a.t6066
      @a.t6066 6 лет назад +3

      It's a rotating bolt like on the m1 garand. All rotating bolt guns operate on the same design principles.

    • @nutbastard
      @nutbastard 3 года назад +2

      I'm 3 years late but I'll leave this here: The charging handle is what reciprocates directly off the gas system. It has a cam cut into it, and the right side locking lug of the bolt rides in this cam. Upon firing, the charging handle is pushed back, and the lug on the bolt is forced to ride in the cam slot until it bottoms out. As it does so the bolt rotates, but is otherwise stationary. Once it bottoms out, the bolt is unlocked and rides rearward along with the charging handle. As it returns to battery, the bolt is stopped by the breech while the charging handle travels a bit further, which cams the lug on the bolt clockwise, locking it again for the next shot.
      It's both really clever and incredibly simple.

      For the guns intended purpose it was an excellent choice. This was intended as a PDW, personal defense weapon, for those military personnel whose roles were not direct contact with enemy infantry. Anything from a mortar crewman or artillery crew or tankers or logistical support. They needed something better than a pistol but also light enough weight and reduced in size from a full battle rifle that they could more efficiently carry out their primary role. This had decent enough performance at under 300 meters that it could be used as an infantry weapon for paratroopers or infantry officers but it was intended as a step up from a 1911 but not in the same league as an M1 Garand or M1903 Springfield.

      Isac Jonsson you could always upgrade to a heavier ignition casing to get the desired effect all weapons can kill efficiently depending on the circumstances or the needs as they arise into place and in a conflict they will you will need to upgrade in a battlefield no doubt about it.
