The Nissan Leaf is a five-door 100% electric automobile in a familiar compact car design. The Leaf uses an electric motor up front powered by a rechargeable lithium ion battery pack located beneath the body frame. The Nissan Leaf seats 5, has quick acceleration and has a top speed of 90 mph. When driving the Leaf it feels just like a normal gasoline car, only it is a little bit quieter.
Electric cars are no modern development. This battery-powered 1912 Rauch and Lang Roadster went 80 miles before having to be recharged. Electric cars became popular in the early 1900's because people did not want to crank a gasoline car to start it. Their popularity ended when the electric starter was invented.
A fully charged Leaf can travel about 73 miles according to the EPA although the range depends on your driving speed, outside temperature, heater and AC use, and battery age.
One thing you may notice is that the car has no tailpipe. Cargo space is ample with the deep well under the hatchback
It has a unique Zero Emission badge on each side of the car and the rear.
The engine compartment shows the inverter on the left with the motor hidden below! On the right is the 12 volt battery which is only used to power the accessories. An optional solar panel rear spoiler can help recharge that battery.
To start the car simply push the power switch. The driving range shown upon startup is an estimated distance you can drive before the car needs charging. The system can also constantly update information about nearby public charging stations should you need them.
To start driving move the center shift control to the drive or reverse position. The shift indicator will confirm the position. When shifting into reverse an optional rearview monitor comes on automatically. The car is very quiet inside as it travels down the road. All Leafs come with a navigation system.
The primary method of charging is a 240V Home Charging Dock which will take about 7 hours to fully charge the vehicle. Another method to charge is to use an optional quick charging port on the car which allows you to connect to a public quick charge station and only takes 30 minutes.
When the range shown gets low, it is time to recharge. Drive up to the charging station. This one happens to allow you to charge the car immediately or delay until late night when electric rates may be lower . Pull the handle. Then connect the charge connector to the charge port. When connected correctly a beep will sound once and the lights on the dash will start blinking. When you are through charging simply unplug the cable and you are done.
