I don't think it's intended to be the nicest thing you can say to someone. There's songs that try to do that but end up sounding cheesing or contrived. I think it's instead an innocent expression of nostalgia, and wanting things to stay the same but knowing full well that they cannot. Or prehaps it's saying to someone dear, "I'm not the person I once was, or the person I thought I'd be. But that doesn't mean you have to change too."
Well, I think the statement is actually a joke, but it's meant to be a light hearted way to say I love you, and I hope your life will always go well. It's a sweet sentiment, and an original lyric that is very adorable to me, and to those who love music, I think. "I hope you're brother's El Camino runs forever" is another line in this like it, it's absurd, because of course it won't run forever, but it's a sweet, funny, light hearted way to say, I still love you & want the best for you. Very nice lyric, I love it.
The day before he died, this album came out. Dawes was my favourite band at the time. But after losing one of my best friends. I didn't want to listen to this album until I was ready. This song will forever be yours Duncan. I love you brother.

Just went to a concert in which this band opened. It didn't take long for us, ( having not been familiar with them), to be thrilled that we found a new band that we very much like! Harmonies great, guitar solos great but wanted more, lyrics right up our alley, demeanor of the atmosphere was beautiful. Front man and singer, was so gracious and humble with the huge crowd. Connected with the audience beautifully. Most of all the band gave us a great night and we will be seeking them out to hear more.
Never listened to it with my old man, but he texted it to me quite often. Life without a chaperone is not what I ever wanted it to be. The Heavy Chevy will run forever in spirit. I see my Dad as no one ever saw him as he was to me...#1. STP broke up too often. I miss you and love you Dad. Thanks for giving me Dawes from FUV.
I am sorry but English is not my first language, I couldn't find an accurate description, what does the quote 'life withouth a chaperone' actually means?
I heard this song for the 1st time today, on a local college station in St Louis Mo. as I'm loading up my trailer to go camping with my wife and kids...one of which is 19 and drives an elcamino. Life is good..
I am a songwriter for life. Its through me like a cities name in a stick of rock . I get so jaded listening to bad writing and then there is Dawes. One of the best bands out there . I keep returning to the power of their words first and then the music takes me. It is seldom in that order with music nowadays as the lyricist seems be down the food chain in bad collaborations. Dawes explore who we are beyond the lens of love or loss .There is so much more to be open to and opened by.
Taylor is one of the best songwriters out there, and I love how this song has become a singalong at the end of most of their concerts now. Gets to me every time.
How many more times can I hear this and "A Little Bit of Everything" and NOT have it bring a tear to my eye? Songwriting dosen't get any better than that in my book!
Sitting in the dark, March 27 2021 and this is still my go to song that always brings a smile to my face. Congratulations on the new baby, Taylor and Mandy.
One of my good friends recently passed away. He was a musician out in Nashville, but before those days we played in a band together for many years in the Twin Cities. Before me moved out there we went to see Dawes in concert. I'd never seen them and only knew a handful of tunes, but I left a fan for sure. This song has been an incredible source of comfort right now and I don't know if the band will ever see this, but in case they do I want them to know how much this tune means to me and how much they're music meant to him. Also, they're officially never allowed to break up.
Saw these guys live nearly a year ago, they were opening for some guy my girlfriend wanted to see in concert. I was absolutely blown away, a few of the songs they played actually made me tear up a bit. Great fucking band.
A friend recommended Dawes to me; the first video I tried ( the official "When My Time Comes" ) just didn't do it for me. On the hottest night of a 2019 eastern Canadian summer, I couldn't sleep, so I checked out this video; I'm a fan for life.
Oddly enough Brandon Flowers of the Killers brought me here and honestly watching this video a year after falling in love with Dawes is just beautiful finality.
Thanksgiving 2016. My Husband introduced me to this song and we both cried like babies. Getting up there in years this really hits you about how fast your youth passes you by. Awesome Song and Video !!!!! Hope my Daddy's Chevy Runs Forever !
This video makes me feel so warm inside. Been following them since North Hills and when Tay left the band this song got a sad, deeper meaning. Still one of their best jams
This song seriously brought tears to my eyes. Brought back a flood of memories of the best friend I've ever had. (Only it was her brother's old Firebird). Miss her and those days more I could ever say, but you managed to write a song to say it for me.
Last week I stepped away from my band. Toughest decision I've made in a long time. We've worked so hard to get to the point we're at now but there's a voice in my heart that is leading me another direction. They'll be getting a replacement. Here's to touring the country with my best friends. The late night drives, the hot french fries. The National Parks, you're my favorite band, and may you always stay together.
First saw this band when they opened Aug 2nd 2018 for Jeff Lynnes Elo. Very impressed, loved this song especially. I'm 60 years old, am i too old to appreciate young bands? I think not cuz my fav bands are fading away with age.
I loved this song from the first time I heard it when it originally came out, but somehow it took eight years for me to finally see the music video. Glad to see it was worth the wait.
I never said a thing about "one note". Building a crescendo should be in the first chorus, not the last one. Sounds like a crowd pleaser....Hope you figure it out.
Rarely does one come across a song so authentic and genuine. Saying the artist should have worked "building a crescendo in the first chorus" seems really silly.
Sometimes I think this song sounds like a fathers last words to his baby girl. She’s young, but not an actual baby, and her coming of age story started rough. And despite this he knows she’ll come out on the other side a better person.
this and Have all the somgs been written? by The Killers are in the same vibe/feeling can't wait to see Dawes live, opening the The Killers show will be a grrat day :')
I just love this song- no matter what...these guys came to me through Jordan Zevon's mention- and wow, what a steller addition to my playlists. It's definitely a blessing and a hope song.
Thanks for this song...it just compelled me to reach out to my best friend in high school that i haven't seen or talked to in probably 35 years...made me sad and happy at the same time. My new favorite song. (I wonder if changing "always been to me" to "always were to me" was intentional. )
Jackson Browne was, to some degree, a one-man Eagle. After all, he wrote Take it Easy with Glenn Frey. And even though he was played to death "Somebody's Baby", "Running on Empty", etc., 'played to death' does not necessarily reflect on him. In addition, there were a LOT of JB songs that were not played to death, but were awesome (I'd include "Sky Blue and Black" here). When I compare Dawes to Jackson Browne, I do so as a compliment, to both artist and band.
Love how you guys channel Zevon, Browne, and Dire Straits. You have a great and original sound. Pumped to be seeing you in concert for the second time.
Saw you guys open up for ELO on your Birthday! Happy Belated Birthday! Your music reminds me of a cross between Jackson Browne and Don Henley. You have an amazing sound, unique harmonies, great sound, the guitars ring true, great drumming, beautiful piano melodies, and love the beard. You are fantastic. Glad your dream came true with Jeff Lynne! Congratulations! Keep the Music coming. And as Paul Rodgers from Bad Co. put it, "Live for the Music!"
+Jake Brannon I saw them and thought "Dang, is that Gillian Welch and David Rawlings? Where the heck did they come from??? The rest of the people in the video aren't anybody I know, though,
+CPD0123a Get to know the others! They are GREAT musicians. Brandon Flowers is from the Killers, Shovels & rope are dynamic AF, My Morning Jacker has some good tunes, and Conor Oberst is a legend. And that's just half of who's in here! Deer Tick is great too!

So many great musicians & bands these days! I'm 58, and I try to explore as many as I can, I'm not going to limit myself to the past. I love the 60's to 90's stuff, but why stop there? Death Cab for Cutie is my latest favorite, and now I've just learned about Dawes, & plan to see them live in July, seeing Death Cab live in August, and discovered Real Estate, very good. Also, Muse, of course, has been around for awhile, but they're great. So many great new bands, I'd say it's a very abundant indy rock/art rock explosion of goodness, as good as the '70's, better than the '90's, which had a lot of great new bands/artists, but not quite as abundant as the '80's, hard to match that wonderful new wave era. I remember listening to the college radio station in the 80's, fixated on new discoveries, with my pen & paper to write them down, every day back then. But it's very abundant & high quality right now. If you don't have good radio stations, then go online & listen to Pandora, Radio Paradise, 365, and a bunch of others, that's what I do in northern CA, Northbay, where the stations are terrible Clear Channell controlled censored garbage. Here in CO, front range area, I'm getting 4 good radio stations, 3 of them public, one private, that gives me excellent music, a mix of the good past, along with plenty of new bands. It's one of the joys of my life to get into it!
Aw, dem feels! That school at the end is about a mile up the road from me, I remember hearing he stopped up there, but I didn't know it was for the "Official" video. Really cool!
seriously though, is "I hope all your favorite bands stay together" the nicest thing you could say to someone or not?
+cfiore 2012 I've thought that exact same thing!
There's no climax in the chorus...just a nice melody.
Probably the nicest thing you can say to somebody is "I hope the world sees the same person that you've always been to me."
Well, I think the statement is actually a joke, but it's meant to be a light hearted way to say I love you, and I hope your life will always go well. These guys, Avetts, Jason Isbell; I think one of the reasons I love them all is that they're criminally under- rated.

The lyric is exceptional, very visual...the music could be a soaring anthem, but it never builds...
Change one note to make it a "soaring anthem" and you've lost me.
