@@kailee87 Sorry late reply, but check out *Gaia Seed Project Seed Trap* for PS1. There are SO MANY parallels! But it doesn't rehash Metal Black's content at all really. The tiny dev house that made Gaia Seed, Techno Soleil, absolutely NAILED the atmosphere that Metal Black had going for it. The stages and bosses are very, very imaginative. Stage 4 of Gaia Seed is a favorite of mine, one of the coolest twists in level art design. The music is just unbelievable, I dare say it blows even Metal Black's amazing tunes out of the water! The final boss does not disappoint, but weather or not it's stands beside Metal Black's Jelly Whale with bizarre shifting images is up to the player's taste. Peace out bro
This game was initially planned to be Darius III, but Taito decided the plot was too much darker than the earlier two games' plots and changed it into a standalone game. Then they stopped numbering the Darius series permanently. One can only imagine what this game would be like with Darius zone selection...

Got this on Saturn and US and Japan Taito collections, very artsy shmup, gets quite tough, and once you get to the last stage, continues are no longer given. Instead you get a rather bleak ending, though the good ending is rather miserable as well.
Border down on the Japanese Dreamcast was the spiritual successor to metal black and I can def see similarities with the beam power ...looks hard as nails just like BD :)
Gun Frontier is in no way related to Metal Slug, this is Taito, MS is from Nazca which was made up of former Irem employees. The game you may be thinking of is Gunforce 2 (which oddly enough isn't a sequel to Gunforce 1 from what I've read) also known as Geo Storm (it's real name) in Japan, made by the folks at Irem. Gun Frontier is a shmup (later inspired the creator of Battle Garegga to make that game), Gunforce 2 is a fast paced run n gun.

Great game. The molecule bonus objects are annoying and the CPU time could have been put to better use. The difficulty of this game is high. 35:12 Puddy-cat !!
Those molecules weren't just for bonus points, they powered up your weapon, and allowed you to use the beam weapon, to duel the boss's beams they tended to fire. Some epic beam battles can occur in this game, a mechanic later used for G Darius and Border Down.

Thumbs Up for the completely bonkers ending!! Felt like it was doing a crazier version of Kubrick's 2001.
The arcade version is sublime here. Now the S. Tribute version is out on PC and the music is kinda stuffed here, probably my PC I guess....
