Man, making your own bits and bobs...that's really neat. :D Y'all are expanding what you can do pretty handily, huh? Would love to see more of y'alls homebrew stuff. Easily my favorite part of the channel. :3
Yesss! Tau parts for the win! Now we just need Jenn's SoBs and Murray's 'nid bits! maybe we can finally get Shrike winged warriors. Awesome video, gang! Was a fun way to spend a Sat evening. Also, congrats on the 250K!
For anyone looking to get into 3D modelling specifically for 3D printing I highly recommend the channel Artisans of Vaul. The problem is that a lot of 3D modelling guides are for videogames which has different requirements than 3D printing. Edit: as Dave says at 14:22 is a key example of the differences between 3D designing for 3D Printing and 3D designing for Videogames. For videogames nearly everything has to be made out of quads since most game engines don't like Ngons and it will cause problems in the rendering stage. For 3D printing however, Ngons aren't a major issue, the file is going to be broken down into triangles anyway when you convert it to STLs. The main thing to look out for when 3D printing is something you don't care about for videogame assets, which is making the object manifold (aka a sealed object with no holes in the mesh), an object MUST be Manifold otherwise it can cause major issues in the printing stage (and I do mean major, it might not just a failed print but it can lead to bits breaking off and piercing the FEP which holds your resin and thus leaks all over the machine...which is hell to repair and you're better off just buying a new printer if the resin got inside the machine). The other problem is intersecting faces, however it's only flickering intersecting faces (ones where you move the camera in blender and they flicker) that are really an issue. The other thing you'll see a lot of Hard Surface 3D modellers do is bevel the fuck out of everything to give it definition...do not bevel everything when 3D printing, the reason 3D asset makers do this is to make it look more 'real'...which you don't need to do because you're object is already going to be real because it's 3D printed instead use bevels where you want to exaggerate this. Also 3D builder is a free piece of 3D modelling software that Microsoft made that can repair a LOT of the issues you find so once you've fixed all the major issues (making the object manifold and flickering intersecting faces), take your STL, put it into 3D Builder and it'll fix the remaining issues.
Thanks for the channel suggestion, went and bookmarked it for future reference. I've wanted to dip my toes into both modding and 3D printing for a while, so it's useful to know the differences in methodology.
I’ve been loving the customized factions you guys have been making. Will Jenn be joining the fun with a custom Order for her Sisters? Or starting a new army for this campaign?
Spectacular design! Way to go, Dave. And Murray and Jen the painting job is just stunning. The expanded lore that came out of the prayer tags is just gorgeous.
I love these! I JUST bought my Sisters army because of Jen, and i look forward to paint more armies, i am definitely getting me some Taus to try this one day!
Its hard to say what hasn't already been mentioned - but man these are just so cool! Im determined on setting up my printer in between work when I get back, and these along with scrap will be the firsts on it! Really nice job on the sculpts, Dave! Its really cool seeing how far your 3D skills have come!
Another great vid from the team! I think using the same scan tech from the cinematics vid to help with scaling would be a great addition to your workflow. That way you could scale everything up for modelling, and then scale it down before exporting for print. Congratulations on the 250K, very well deserved!
I LOVE THESE !!!!!!! We now need the sisters and tyrinads ones I love how much time and effort you all put into your videos and minis keep up the amazing work
This is great! I got given some old tau minis recently and was thinking of starting a Tau army with them, using a semi Japanese theme myself based off an old game I played. This vid is really pushing me to start doing it
big tip for future bits creation. there are many bits creators the have cheap or free bits for models. to create your own you can use them as base for reference. i also created my own soulderpads for tau and I started by importing a free shoulderpad from someone else. that way I will know they are the right scale and helps invision how they will look.
Samurai actually wore them both ways, but typically when in armor, the blade was angled the way I have modeled it. I did some research. We are used to seeing them the other way around from old samurai movies, where they were in kimono or Yukata, and the swords were worn the other way around. All to do with the era, fashion and also the ergonomics of drawing a blade in armor vs out.
im new to 40k but your channel and this project really got me excited to start my journey. on a side note, katanas have the blade facing upward when sheathed. what you model is more of a tachi. the design is still top notch!
Fun fact I learned while researching for this video - katanas were worn both blade up and blade down, depending on the era and the dress, so both can be accurate
Just a thought - maybe for the wish tags - you should print them separately and have them to be able to attach like purity seals. In some of the arm positions it almost feels like they are defying gravity.
Love the bits will def be getting them . Tyranid style carapace armour similar to the one one of the Marines wear in 10th would be a be a useful custom bit
I‘m sorry to ask so fast, but can you make the shorter swords Held in hand, and I want to create a leader, that has two of them. Also, because I want to make it a kill team with house rules, that will be used with into the dark terrain, I would really like some custom ranged weapons, with maybe some tags from the shoulder pads on them too. Maybe a small rifle, and a shotgun?
Incredible work once again, I love the unique Japanese take on the tau. I suppose the advice I could give is the fire blade has the ethereal caste symbol on his armour; though apart from this everything was perfect.
Really cool designs..cant help but think the shoulderpads should overlap the other way around. Top overlapping lower. So that strikes slide off. Would make more sense. Also, all katanas were worn curve down even with armour. It was loose so it could be twisted when drawn.
Something i think should be addressed in lore is why they're standing on natural bases. Because they live on an orbital platform of some sort i think their bases are synthesized, kind of like a museum diorama with simulated weather, so the T'au soldiers feel more like they live somewhere other than the desolate void of space.
Those are amazing. The only thing i'd change is turn the katana sheaths upside down, since thats the historic way they were used. Just a nitpick, but those look brutally good anyways.
its a bit too late now that you're done but to help with the space issue of the swords and the shoulder armour, I believe samurai wore their swords with the edge up so scabbard curves downwards instead of upwards. It's how the sword is drawn. For examples, look up "Iajutsu"
When in armor, and in earlier periods pre Edo, samurai wore their swords the way I sculpted them, due to lots of use on horseback with more curved blades such as the tachi. They began flipping them later with less curved blades and also when nolonger in armor
@@TabletopTime oh I don't think there was anything wrong with the shape of the sculpt at all. I'm just saying the orientation of the sword could help with the collision issues on the models. There are lots of historical depictions of the sword in both directions but I have seen more in the blade up orientation. Besides, your tau aren't on horses
Pretty sure the issue where the swords get in the way of the ahoulder pad would be fixed if the swords were held the traditional way, being upside down with the blade facing the armpit
Yes mate! We need more of everyone’s custom homebrew 40k armies on the channel! Love it!
That Cadre Fireblade is STUNNING, especially the lighting effect on the katana blade!😊
i read that as "lightning" dear lord XD
Man, making your own bits and bobs...that's really neat. :D Y'all are expanding what you can do pretty handily, huh? Would love to see more of y'alls homebrew stuff. Easily my favorite part of the channel. :3
We love to constantly learn! Keeps it fresh

Also, congrats on the 250K!
Including the flower on the faceplates is such a cool idea.
And a round of applause for the first organic sculpted piece, Dave!

Well, now you've gone and done it. You've gone and made me want to start a tau army. Absolutely awesome. ❤🔥🔥🔥
Love to see more of this Tau sept
Spectacular design! Way to go, Dave. And Murray and Jen the painting job is just stunning.
The expanded lore that came out of the prayer tags is just gorgeous.
Nicely done. Great team work in getting this done.
I Love your custom Tau! Keep it up!!
I'm a vanilla T'au collector, and I might need to make a unit of these. Very striking. Well done all around.
Very cool! I printed and painted come Samurai Tau on my channel last year as well! Love the paint scheme here!
I too have an aversion to painting like the box art. DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO GW, YOU’RE NOT MY REAL DAD!
Wow. Some Absolutely amazing sculpts and painting. Well done. This is making me want to build some Sakura Tau

That is some great sculpting! You guys are probably the one youtube channel that pushes their limits more than any others
I LOVE THESE !!!!!!! We now need the sisters and tyrinads ones I love how much time and effort you all put into your videos and minis keep up the amazing work
Looks superb! Great job. These would fit right into my kickstarter of Cyber Samurai!
This is great! I got given some old tau minis recently and was thinking of starting a Tau army with them, using a semi Japanese theme myself based off an old game I played. This vid is really pushing me to start doing it

I love the Sakura Tau. So great to see another episode for them, and they look fantastic.
I always appreciate Murray’s energy & enthusiasm
Am literally midway through my own tau force heavily helped by auxiliary forces thanks to seeing these videos. Incredible work
I would have liked it more if the blade edge would be facing upwards when held, like Samurai used to wear them. But overall this looks amazing !!
Samurai actually wore them both ways, but typically when in armor, the blade was angled the way I have modeled it. I did some research. DAVID I HAVE BEEN SO EXCITED FOR THIS
They look beautiful
These look gorgeous. Amazing job
Glad to see them back
Subtle but really fitting, I love the designs and they really look like they would fit in the universe
This is all so unbelievably cool!
These turned out great, nice job guys! Making me want to start a Tau army
Great job on the 3d hand sculpting
Just a thought - maybe for the wish tags - you should print them separately and have them to be able to attach like purity seals.

This is such a neat concept
Already got my first print going with these bits!!!
.. that means a lot. Let us know how you go. This is a first anyone's ever printed my work thankyou so much!
Thanks for sharing this fantastic episode, the Sakura is freaking cool dude! very much enjoyed it!
Random thought here, but a naginata would be neat to see.
Love the bits will def be getting them . Tyranid style carapace armour similar to the one one of the Marines wear in 10th would be a be a useful custom bit
Love all your videos, but. Pls do more of this man, these are my favourite things.
Deal. We will put another Sakura vid out on the weekend
Those are great!
I’m so glad I can make my own Sakura tau! I was afraid people would get mad for taking their idea 😅
Can I like this 100x? Bravo!
This may be heresy and against 40k Lore but I want to kitbash Tau Space Marines with all the armor too, oh god this is a pipe dream I wanna see!
The only lore-related problem is an ethereal-caste emblem on a Carde Fireblade breastplate. Still, every detail is stunning! +
I‘m sorry to ask so fast, but can you make the shorter swords Held in hand, and I want to create a leader, that has two of them. Do I fix this or make cool lore.... Are these farsight enclave offshoots...hmmmm
Really cool designs..cant help but think the shoulderpads should overlap the other way around. Top overlapping lower. So that strikes slide off. Would make more sense. Also, all katanas were worn curve down even with armour. It was loose so it could be twisted when drawn.
Love the PiperMakes miniature
congrats on the quarter of a million subs!
So freaking cool! Not a Tau fan but these are great
This is fantastic love seeing your army developing
Hopefully you’ll be doing some games with the army when your finished?
For sure
The space bears will have a challenge on their paws 🐾
Something i think should be addressed in lore is why they're standing on natural bases. wonderful!

This is so cool!!!!!! I bought some fire warriors the other day and im glad i didn't put them together yet :3
Now I'm imaging some poor tau so weighed down with his dead mates tags, he can barely move
These are stunning, now we need a custom commander farsight! 😁
These are great! Are you aware of Netsuke, they could be another nice little detail item with plenty of theme and character.
Like see this tau army get fleshed out
All of you are so talented, damn!

I could make some flipped swords or sculpt tau on horses. Time for horsetau
@@TabletopTime for the greater hoof
Pretty sure the issue where the swords get in the way of the ahoulder pad would be fixed if the swords were held the traditional way, being upside down with the blade facing the armpit
We need more ❤
So glad I just do Kill Team. Can't imagine customizing entire 40k army.
I need more of Tau
we are gonna see a battle report were the Sakura fight the Space bears right,RIGHT? :) love this army ...keep going!
You guys should sell and ship printed bits for those of us who don't have printers but love these bits.
Welcome back, Sakura Tau!
Could you possibly 3D model some tyranid armor pieces for space marines that we could buy from your website?
holy mold lines batman
I'm really stingy with buying 3d STLs, but these are so nice that I had to pull the trigger on them so I can customize some of my prints.
Sweet more Tau been made
I love this army can't wait to see more
I want to start collecting tau now
Honestly, it would be dope if they had heavier armor (basically exo suits that look like samurai armor)
could you possibly tell me the colours used, i love the scheme
From what I can tell this one isn’t in the playlist for the Sakura Tau?
Were the previous parts that were made for the crisis suits cos I would love those as well
Stay tuned for Fridays video - Updates, Upgrades and Ad-ons coming soon!
Traditionaly the katanas should be facing up otherwise the blade will become dull but you can leave it as it is
What if i wanted to do something like this but i dont have a 3d printer? but these parts are amazing.
Yay!
I don't have a 3d printer, is there a way I can order these parts at all? Thanks, love it
Dammit, these sakura T'au make me want to start back into T'au haha
Well damn. Looks like I’m spending the weekend stripping tau minis again
I want to see some samurai spacemariens
They look awesome! Makes me wonder how much skill is required to make a custom Xenos army and everything lol
Is the size of the 3d printed files for these parts already fitting for the tau, or do I have to do any scaling ?
you huys rock love the content
Onimusha in a steampunked style battle report TAUSHIMA
We need to see space bears vs the sekura scept
It's a pauldron. Or a sode.
Tbh i'd like to see some fire warriors from other species like the human members (i cant remember the actual name)
try to make a sakura tau in heroforge it is posible because i did it but it might not look the best
