  • My family came to visit and we saw all the sites! We visited Himeji Castle, Koko-En Gardens, and had dinner with an apprentice Geisha, or Maiko. I also got to ride the bullet train. It was an awesome experience.
And yes, I spelled Maiko incorrectly at one point in the video face palm

You met Maiko Kikusana (菊咲奈) of Miyagawa-chō. She is from the Hanafusa Okiya (花ふさ)

You seem to be knowledgeable about these so I'm gonna bother you alittle. I'm looking for a particular hostess. She was a big deal a while back because (if I'm not mistaken) she couldn't speak or she couldn't hear. I remember she'd write on notepads for her clients and she became on of the highest paid geisha in the industry. This shouldn't more than 10-15 years ago. Are you familiar with her?

@@sincerelyeugene6638 They usually retired early. So chances, she already retired. Old and experienced Geiko/Geisha is a very rare sight. Most will retired and become instructor or retired in total from the entertainment world altogether. But I don't know for sure, you can check with her household (Okiya). If you can find them.
For side notes, a full fledged Geiko/Geisha or even a Maiko can only be book if you already a known customer, or by third party recommendation, mostly. This is done to protect the girls, tea-house and the restaurant from unruly and con-customer.
So make-sure to really check with your booking websites or travel agent that you collaborated with. Some booking websites and agents are known to cut corners. Like having only one entertainer to accomodate more than one banquet at the same time. A con-artist incident, also does happened. So, be extra careful, and get a personal recommendation if can.
And most Maiko, or Geiko don't speak fluent English. Having a Japanese-fluent friend/fellow customer as a translator really help a lot with the party experience. Consider to hire more than one Geiko or Maiko to enhance the experience. Yes, they can cost $100++ per hour for each girl (according to your request and preparation by the girls). But having some playing traditional instruments and sing, while the others dance and entertain, really boost up the experience.
      My experience:
We had a group of 8 experienced geikos, and maikos to perform and entertain at our party once. It was a full live orchestrated performance including the traditional instrument of shamisen, shakuhachi, taiko and ko-tsuzumi to accompany the dance by the girls on stage. And some of them then, came down to entertain us with fun traditional games (Ozashiki Asobi experience) and having small pleasant talks; entertain us personally while the others remained on stage to provide a musical ambiance. All of these occured while we were having an amazing seasonal traditional course-by-course kaiseki feast. It was a spectacular experience. Worth the money. All are well spent for me. And probably will repeat if provided the chance.
Is it expensive for the whole thing?
Quite, (it depends on your budget) but well spent for sure. I heard that if you ask for only maiko and have them came in with a western contemporary getup, the charge will decrease but try not to do this. As geishas/maikos with full getup; their colorful makeup and accessories is very important as apart of the experience.
Mine was done with a recommendation and arrangement by a local friend. So yes, you have to have recommendation to get a good okiya that can provide a superior quality experience. I do recommend that you get the experience. There are few websites I think that provide the service of booking online but as I said, better to have a local recommendation or search the most recommended ochaya/ryokan that provides such service to first time customer with the accompany of their loyal patrons. We had ours arranged by local friends at a ryokan through his connection personally.

It's possible. There are businesses that now offer ozashiki experiences similar to this one, and sometimes more private (You and your party instead of a large group) they also cater to foreigners by offering translators who speak English ^^
