I don't think I've ever anticipated an album so highly. One of my favorite live moments with them was when they performed "Ants of the Sky" in Providence, RI and the whole pit broke out into a square dance during the bluegrass moment (at Tommy's suggestion, of course). Now I'm looking forward to doing a jig in my room, to say the least. The wait for this is going to be so painful! Always great content from Flight of Icarus.
My album rating: ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-BLEGH/10 Jokes aside, the more I listen to Revolution In Limbo, the 2nd half of Future Shock/Never Seen to Stare Into The Abyss to Pre-History to Bad Habits, those tracks became my top favorite tracks in this album. I guess no one mentioned the backmasked blast beats in Pre-History.
Had to wait to watch this review till after i heard it. Beginning to end this album fantastic. I'll give it a 10, recency bias be damned, I know what I heard was brilliant lol.
I'd like to redeem myself of some previous opinions about Colors II - it was still fresh and my initial reaction was bitter, although I never said it was a bad album. I lived more with it now, obviously, and I rearranged my thoughts over songs like Fix the Error and The Future is Behind Us, even if these are still not my favorites, I acknowledge the pure inspired brilliance as these are probably the stand out tracks in terms of innovation on the album - BTBAM keep blowing people's minds at every turn! Also, Bad Habits is another track I had overlooked and has definitely grown on me; that choir moment bring me the chills! Human is Hell...what can I say? It has some of my favorite sections of the band's career; and that hook, that Tommy hook reminds of The Mars Volta/At the Drive-in vocalist. Awesome! The tribal drums in Helix… the eerie acoustic fingers in Limbo… the Intronaut clean delayed guitar passage in Never Seen Future Shock… the Rush, Bowie, and 70’s incredible vibe of The Future Is Behind Us… the punk gospel awry of Fix The Error… I could go on and on… This is not as kickass, aggressive and dark (and the quirky moments are not as pleasant to me) as Colors - in no way it matches it - yet I love the subtle nods it pays it as homage, and that it stands on its own. There are still tracks I skip, “fat filler” like Stare into the Abyss and Turbulent (I love Prehistory!) that act as more of forgettable segues, I wish they would had trim it, like Sfumato, which works wonderfully before Human Is Hell, and in that way make it a flawless album (to my ears). Favorite tracks: Human Is Hell; Never Seen / Future Shock; Monochrome - The Double Helix Of Existence Bad Habits; Revolution in Limbo
My favorite album of their's is the great misdirect but I've loved everything just some more others and this album just rules like I look forward to playing it
As I recall Automata got me into this band, I had been introduced to prog metal being turned onto Dream Theatre but BTBAM turn up the metal with the prog and so I've been much more into them!
I love Colors 2 for sure. I only think they were trying to re-create the intensity and epicness of "White Walls" when they made "Human is Hell," and I simply don't think it's as good. For me, White Walls is just a song that will never be de-throned. It's just the best thing they've ever written... in my opinion of course. Overall though, Colors 2 offers so much to love!
Saw them with August Burns red when there last album came out , so good and atmospheric ....I’d say Alaska is there best record this one is getting up there though
To be brief, I fall on the negative side toward Colors II. While I can´t argue with their technical prowess and sonic experience, I don´t like the overall mood and tonality: the album is a joyous ride indeed but one where they fall into goofy, silly Prog territory too often. There are colors to this rainbow that felt really cringy to me (they used to be funny, but they pushed it this time); in some of the songs (TFIBU; T) Tommy even seems to be impersonating Jonathan Davis, maybe it's part of the pretty theatrics, who knows? Luckily many people will disagree. Favorite tracks: Monochrome + The Double Helix of Existence (best track imo) Revolution in Limbo (cringy Dream theater inspired chorus vocals though) Never Seen - Future Shock (again some serious riffage!) Human is Hell Good tracks (which could very well grow on me): Bad Habits Fix the Error (yet the mood, man, the mood...turns me off) Least favorite: The Future is Behind Us Turbulent Sfumato (I know, I know its purpose...now compare it with Viridian) On the fence: Prehistory (interesting and innovative) Stare into the abyss (I think it fits well as a segue, has a nice melody: deftonish riffs at the beginning) Well, I've been the judge.
@@MetalTrenches I totally respect that. I get the idea and the 80´s influences but not the wankery soup of the end result. That´s mostly my problem with Colors II, while I love this section I hate the next, and so on. Often pressing between cartoonish and solemn, grey and frivilous, this conflict alone derailed my experience. If there's one thing Colors II made me realize was how Automata is a crowning achievement I had misjudged. But I totally respect the other side of the spectrum. I love BTBAM.
Too bad you have to edit the songs together to get the proper colors 2 experience. Lucky though the songs start/end nicely that you can edit them together perfectly with a bit of effort.
Colors 2 is my favorite album...nd I haven't even heard it yet. I say this cuz for this is the only band where I pretty much liked each new record more than the last. It's like they're... progressive 🤔
I'm sure the album is pretty solid. I haven't disliked anything they have released. But I really really miss the straight forward heaviness of Alaska, and wish they'd roll back some of their prog worship, only peppering the album with it rather than slathering it all over the place.
It's like comparing the Portnoy era vs the Mangini era of Dream Theater. Both eras have their respective place, sound, and fanbase; and it's almost dire impossible to replicate the former. Kinda funny that Dream Theater knows how to polarize their fanbase, and you can say the same thing with BMTH. :D

Always great content from Flight of Icarus.
Thanks as always. Sounds amazing. Just a few more days…
One of the most interesting and consistent bands in the game.
Absolutely

Best album breakdown!
Preordered the album 2 days after Fix the error was first dropped. Definitely the most anticipated album... ever, really
I almost never preorder anything these days but this was an exception.
Such an incredible album! Track by track really is the way to go
I think it is time for a second Anatomy Of album to give us some insight on their newest inspirations.
Colours 2 was insane this and Wolves In The Throne Room are 10/10 best albums this month

Agreed. Masterpiece

Well, now I'm even more excited about this bad boy. Can't wait until Friday to hear this monster. One of the most unique metal bands ever.
FOR SURE
Can't wait to listen to it and review it on IG!
Great review man! Had a blast listening
Thanks! Check out the tier list too if you haven’t already

Dang late to the party. Hope you’ve checked out their whole back catalogue now 🤘🏻
I find it impressive that this band that has never made a bad album but also have a lot of incredible albums.
One of the greats
I would love to see a Ministry and/or Godflesh tierlist!
Looking forward to hearing Colors II. A couple of the samples of Leave you played sounded like Fallujah.
Worth checking out Leave for sure but they are not nearly that technical
Words CANNOT describe how hyped I am for this album.

Same
As I said in my Tier List video yesterday, I love that era as well... but the great thing is that those albums aren't going anywhere.

Good review but the mask is dumb. Get rid of it. Lol
