- The Dynaudio Special Forty and the Q acoustics concept 300 are both stunning stand mount speaker, they’ve been on a collision course with ourselves for a long time coming. It’s a question we get asked a lot, which one is better? The Dynaudio Special Forty or the Q acoustics Concept 300? Find out what I think by watching this video!
It’s a long one again, but I wanted to make sure I covered as much of it as these speakers deserve so bear with it, grab a cup of tea and please feel free to chime in if you have something to say!
If you’re a fan of either speaker, or if you have either speaker, in my opinion you have a great set of speakers whichever you’ve chosen but I’d love to hear your feedback, if you agree with my findings or not.
Please, I know that RUclips sound clips aren’t an accurate way to determine what to buy, so keep them comments to yourselves.
If you’re thinking of purchasing either of these speakers, please do get in touch via any of the avenues below and we’ll see what we can do for you.

Thank you!!
Would love to hear a part2 with the peachtree amplifier. I’ve also found with my concept500s that when they were new or a very cold room or mostly they have not been played for awhile they sound much better after 10mins of playing. I would say the 500s needed a good 150+ hours on them to really open up. Thank you very much for comparison! The only one on RUclips! Keep it up :)
Q Acoustics all the way with the right amplifier!
What amplifier would that be.?
The 300 is not about Bass , it's about clarity, separation, smoothness ,control ,sound stage and imaging at it's best , when people care about bass attack go Klipsch or JBL,, the idea of Q Acoustics concept range is creating non-fatigue sound , avoid aggressiveness .It is totally the opposite of Focal and B&W speakers Thank You.
New sub from Canada, very much enjoyed this comparison. I'm liking the 40's. Thx!
Loved the review! even if you're like rambling along you still make it interesting...its quite engaging to hear you talk & describe what you're hearing etc. Your ability to talk and connect with the listener and we able to connect with you is so magical. Let your wife know ;)
Thanks for the review
Was wondering about this comparison at work just now and boom your video came up on a websearch. I really want the concept 500's but also want to own dyns at some point. Had them in my VW and it was an amazing system
Good stuff Carl. Thanks
There may be information I was looking for in video, bu I just have no patience for a 40 min rambling.
Hey Carl hope all is well !!!!! how do u compare the wharfdale linton vs the dynaudio sp40 I have the lintons but want to upgrade and thinking on the sp40. Thanks
a lot of sidetracks goimg on this channel! just a suggestion to be concise. btw the two set of speakers were even not compared with the same song, same volume and they sit on completely different stands. Despite he mentioned the stand for Q300 is a dedicated one but the stand is absolutely not built to the standard to be accoustically sound. Overall, just not a good auditioning setup.
Loved the review, which amp would you pair with the special 40's?
@@Studioincar How do they go with valve amps? I have a valve amp rated at 30w in class A mode or 60w in class A/B...although I hardly use the A/B mode. I'm never past 10 o'clock on my current speakers although they're 88db sensitivity rather than the 86db here. Cheers.
Carl, mind telling me what type of speaker cables you are using in your set up?
You're wife is my hero!!!
Very good video. Thanks
A new speaker needs running in before any judgement is realised. Are the speakers reviewed already pre used & run in before they’re sent out for review?
People don't send us speakers for review, we buy them, it's a business. Any speaker I cover will have had its fair due in terms of time before being judged, it's only fair.
Can you use the special forty in a room of 37 square metres ?
@@Studioincar tks, I heard they are only usable in a smaller room...
I think Concept 300 has better bass than Special Forty.
what do you think?
Dynaudio is for people who wouldn’t mind giving up some airiness and resolution in favor of cohesion.
Did anyone see how GR Research dissected and bashed Special 40's ? Any thoughts?
Currently saving get them to pair with Lyngdorf TDAI-1120, can't wait! But always researching other models in that price range.
@@Studioincar Thanks for the reply, same thoughts here.
I was really torn between Concept 300 and S40, ordered Dyns 2 days ago after watching this video from start to finish. Can’t wait for them to arrive!
Special 40s are highly praised by many. I guess there's one owner who wasn't completely satisfied and sent them in to GR Research to see what another viewpoint would reveal. For their own designs, GR Research has a process and end result target that also appeals to many. I would be interested in hearing the two designs side by side.
He’s selling a product like anyone.
Audition, buy what sounds good, if you need top of the top internals, research that and buy them.
But gr is kind of a hack. His own speaker designs are hot garbage.
@@DH-og5yr It's been 3 years that I own Special 40's, never looked back on another speaker.
What about a shootout between Special 40 vs Focus XD20
Interesting example of WAF
Is that a harbeth in shot?
Carl, Again, loving these Sunday chat reviews- thanks!!! Especially when they help me understand and compare the S40's. Can you just tell me, with S40's and source being streaming, would you go Hegel 190 or McIntosh MA5300? Dont know if you have any experience with McIntosh
Hi jearley22, I‘m using the mc 5200 with the s40. Can recommend it. This little Mac is highly underrated. Enough power, great dac, sounds involving, never sharp - it‘s a great match. Watch out for „mark on hifi“, here on yt. He‘s a nice review guy, he started with S40 and a McIntosh 5300.
@@mango6052 manGo, I ordered the McIntosh 5300, 9 days ago. Big move for me, just did it after listening to a higher end Mac integrated amp at a dealer. We were using the Bluesound Node 2i streaming Tidal. Bought that too. My Sonus Faber Concertinos sounded amazing so I can’t wait!!! Tell me about the speaker cables you use if you don’t mind. Once the amp arrives, then I’ll figure out if I will get the special forties.
@@jearley22 congratulations this amp is great!!! It will show you the quality of every speaker. Actually I’m listening to the Boenicke audio w5 with the Mac (even better than s40 - tbh s40 is really, really good, but a bit of a Kind boring perfection). Try the integrated dac in the mac it‘s better than my Naim streamer (nd5 XS+xps)and my ps audio pwd and in your 5300 you can upgrade it (later). The only disadvantage I see is the phono stage, it‘s not the same level. For speaker cables I use tellurium q black II. Cheap for it’s performance. Enjoy your super amp.
@@mango6052 are you moving on from s40’s? Ever heard Sonus Fabers?
@@jearley22 Hi, no I own them both (w5 & sp40). I listend to SF at my Mac dealer, good match and best finish. Actually I‘m extremely happy witch the little Boenicke puppies. Perfect WAF + astonishing Sq.
Great review!! Thx!! I am looking for new speakers, specially from Dynaudio. I read a lot of the new Heritage Special. Without doubt great ones, but for my budget too expensive. Do you think the Special Forty are more than a alternative to the Heritage? Second question. Is in your opinion the Atoll IN300 a good Amp for driving the 40‘s? Is less expensive to the Hegel H190..Stay healthy..Best wishes, Marco!
P.S.: Sorry for my bad English, i am from Germany😃
@Car Guy daddyo Thank you very much 👍👍
@@Studioincar Hey, thank you for your answer! Stay healthy. Best wishes, Marco
@Car Guy daddyo I am a little bit irritated, because you wrote in your comment for the Heritage/ Paganini test, that the combination of S40 and Arcam A-49 Amp was not satisfactory for you 🤷♂️
Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is the Special 40 speaker sitting on a tensegrity stand in the beginning of the video?
That’s the Heritage Special. Curious how it sounds on that stand and if it’s better or worse than the Dynaudio stand?
@@JT-lf6es But can the tensegrity stand work for speakers not designed for it?
With a name like I expect randy Marsh to come into shof
is hegel 190 enough for dyn 40 speakers or 390 much better? thank you for you video.
That $7,000 USD speaker back there on that flimsy tripod stand is making very nervous.
@@Studioincar Ha ha. Ok. It does look a little flimsy but I was just making a joke is all.
Pocket sized speakers ... 🥺
