I LOVE your definition of "affordable," no sarcasm, macro is so technical that you can do exactly what you display here with basic equipment! Honestly, it's what drew me to the discipline in the first place, you can really make a photo art with just intent and focus.

I really like the way you conveyed the content in this video.
Usually people evaluate the sharpness of the lens, but not for you. You guide people on how to use the lens to take beautiful photos.
I really like it, thank you very much.

I usually use my 6DII (with the very helpful clip screen) with my 100mm 2.8 Macro. A lot of times (especially outside) I switch over to the 7DII with my 100-400mm 4.5-5.6, which I find helpful getting close to hard to reach places or not to disturb insects by having to get too close.

A Canon 6D is my main camera, and a 50/2.5 compact macro has basically fallen into my lap. While I already own and enjoy a 100/2.8L IS macro this 50mm might be nice to take on longer hikes I'm packing lighter, or for putting on my 7D ii. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice! It's a good compact setup when you don't want to haul loads of gear with you. I love a 50mm macro. Plus which it's more usable as a general lens which is handy.

Use a Fuji xt1 and lowa 60 mm macro which does 2.5 times macro for a total of £190 all off ebay and it’s brilliant at good macro with a tilt screen, another great video

Great video!! I don't suppose you have any recommendations for other lenses for this type of photography can't find the one you use 😅 current camera is a 2000D

    Another excellent video Andrew.
For my attempts at macro I've been using an old film camera lens that I inherited from my uncle. It's a 90mm f2.5 Vivitar Series 1 lens with screw mount which I attach to my old Canon 5D Mk3 with an adaptor. I have to focus manually and the best results tend to b with the camera in manual mode.

if you want cheap macro then you can't go wrong with an Olympus TG-6, it has microscope mode, and built it focus stacking (up to 10 shots), fantastic to start into the macro world.

Using an original 5D, myself. Have an adapter for M42 mount, with M42 bellows, and various M42 lenses. My favourite to take is my Pentacon 135mm f/2.8. But its 50mm f/1.8 counterpart is also a beaut. Or a Helios 44 [I have an M and M-4 version], 58mm f/2.
The only trouble is that there's no live view. Very awkward positioning at times, to see through the viewfinder. But, that entire lot still came in at a lower price than the 6D body alone. Whilst still bringing in that full frame beauty.

Yeah a good one to encourage and give ideas, or positives. Some good info, however I have to comment on the clearing of leaves as we don’t know why that mushroom chose that spot, great spot yourself but I think a little country code would have hit the spot, I know your restful and patient as with the wasp in the log!
So thanks for the tips and info, oh I used to use my Canon D70 and Canon macro 60mm I’ll try and send a pic that I took years ago, the butterflies where all over the Buddleia you can see them in the background, but I get a lot of comments on this one, I also use a Olympus Micro 4/3 and these are really good when paired with a 60mm Olympus macro lens that is weather sealed, both good but worth doing your homework on those and Nikons, there are some good legacy lenses as well. Literally my setup! I love my 6D and the 50mm macro lens. I am having so much fun. Just have to force myself to take the tripod with me more often. I find it very hard to take hand held pictures but I am always so lazy to pack everything. Let’s see if it maybe improves with the flash that I ordered. Love the video. The shots are gorgeous.

Thanks Jessica, great camera setup you've got! You could try using smaller mobile tripods which are much easier to carry around and make it easier to get really low down shots.

@@AndrewLanxonPhotography Yeah I have two. One is heavier and one is a actually about the size you use. I think it is just a thing of habit :)

lovely video. I just bought a Niko D700 and 105mm f2.8 macro for my macro kit. All in about £600. A relatively inexpensive way into this type of photography :-)

Fun video. Decided to dust off my 6D. There is something special about that camera. I don’t have the 50, but the 60 EF-S works well for macro with the 12mm extension tube. Thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks Brian! It's a cracking camera and surprisingly light and easy to carry around I feel. I do miss that flip out screen when I spend all day shooting at ground level though!

Used Fujifilm X-T2 with a Laowa 65mm macro. The lens is manual focus, no EXIF data recorded, but it does a great job, at least for me.

I am shooting the 7d ii and I am considering purchasing this lens. I currently shoot a 24-105 f4 L Macro for my event and portrait lens and I have done a bit of macro (bees, butterflies, flowers) with it. I am thinking that this would be a cool addition to my kit as the f/2.5 would be really nice for portraits and macro. I know that it would be better with a full frame and I will in the future purchase one of those, but currently I do more wildlife photography than anything using the Sigma 150-600 C so I lean that way with the camera. The 50mm would equate to 80mm with the crop factor but the depth of field is the same as the 50mm. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks!

I'm currently using a Canon 4000d (second hand) plus a Sigma 105mm macro lens (also second hand). In total it cost me £370 which is fairly reasonable for a beginner

  • @cassia_cries

stick a double glass close up lens filter on your kit lens for around £50 - raynox, nisi, marumi (they're actually good and brilliant for zoom lenses)
Olympus m43 cameras are brilliant for macro.

Lovely stuff. Watching this, and other macro channels based in Europe, makes me more frustrated about living in Japan. Here nature is seen as the enemy (in slight of all the spin you may see online). Meadows, verges, just about anywhere gets cut down to the ground soon after they thrive. The insect population here (and the flora) should be epic, but in the hinterlands of Tokyo it’s a dead zone.
