  • The Triumph Speed 400 aims to punch above its weight, literally. So, naturally we thought of bringing in our much liked 650cc retro roadster: the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. Does the Speed 400 triumph in this company or is the Interceptor 650 just too good to thwart its fellow Indo-Brit cousin? Let Priyadarshan and Jehan break down the two bikes in a tete-e-tete.

Could it be because RE's product designers sit in (cool) UK, creating "cool" bikes for Indians? Or is because RE test riders in India (or their test bikes) are air-conditioned? And therefore more than just 'cool' ? Just as KTMs are designed in (cool) Austria.

But still the bigger issue is the Weight which is forward biased due to the nature of the engine sure it somewhat goes while riding but due to the traffic and the city maneuvering that bike sure misses the mark overall for it's nimbleness and it's bang for the buck proposition,
Sure it has bigger displacement but that weight for that displacement is sure it's negative point as to how the displacement & the engine construction is the plus point for RE Interceptor 650,
where the earlier models reported to break from the steering cone area where 2 or 3 incident reported where the bike broke from the front, sure it's now rectified but still it needs refinement and weight reduction to make that engine and that displacement shine,

Well, I agree that you can take it above 400 if its a sport bike in India. Even 400 CC is a bit too much in India in my opinion. A 300 is sufficient but the reason why I'm thinking about INT 650 is because of something called a flat torque curve.

  • @divyanshuthakur
    @divyanshuthakur Год назад +104

The Inty has 47 bhp which you can use realistically since the engine doesn't rattle throughout the rev range. The T400 on the otherhand, has 40bhp @ 8000 RPM but the bike starts buzzing and vibrating post 6000 RPM which makes using all the power quite difficult.
I sincerely wanted the T400 to be a better bike and I was seriously planning to "downgrade" from my Inty. But I did a test ride and so did a dozen other Inty owners that I know - we all came to the same conclusion that the torque, handling and city riding experience is nice. But the vibrations completely ruin the feel of the bike, the engine feels quite strained and all of the 40bhp is not useable.
This video should've been a bit more in depth but simply comparing stats and figures can easily be done on a website.

I owned a 650 gt for 3 years, and I would never buy a RE again. I admit it looks good and the twin engine was fun but it had a lot of drawbacks.
First of all, ever since my first service I realised that RE had a tough time servicing and regulating the quality for this bike since their mechanics were still new to it. So maintenance was very difficult because mechanics could not resolve the valve clearance issues and found it even complicated to replace fluids like the brake oil after the second year. They simply wouldn't do it. Also, there is no replacement for the brake bleeder valve available.
Second, this bike overheats in the warmer months and thus, is reluctant to be in the higher revs post 4000 rpm. I found that the my bike wasn't comfortable crusing at 100kmph. It did 80kmph comfortably but that was it. I don't know whether this was an issue with mine alone or whether I was just too concerned for my bike. But nevertheless, high rpms were not its thing and it got boring after a while.
Third, the electricals are kind of wacky. My bike's horn electricals got loss over time; the pass light lost its touch and sometimes the ignition wouldn't start. I've seen many people face a problem with battery and ignition. I often kept the bike running for 10 mins as recommended for the first start of the day but, that was quite the hassle over time and during winters I couldn't afford to do it time and again as the engine got cold sooner.
So, I've decided to look at Jap bikes from now on. Regardless of whether they're single cylinder bikes. I hear the KTM/Bajaj bikes have good servicing since they're liquid cooled and since they do not have a center stand a padock stand it used during service. This says a lot about the service quality in my experience. I've never liked KTMs because of its popularity but now the Triumph seems like a good option especially since the service seems reliable.

I have ridden both the bikes. The triumph for most part will do everything that the 650 does easily. But if you are ok with the weight and the rawness then the twin cylinder on the 650 is excellent and the feel & the sound is awesome. 2. Speed 400 feels more sportier, more alive..
    3. Speed 400 is quicker than Interceptor in Roll On/ In gear acceleration.. Also outright acceleration..
    4. Speed 400 is more tractable than Interceptor..
    5. More compact/ light form factor of Speed 400 makes it so much easier in city..
    6. Interceptor's 42kgs extra weight really shows as soon as you pull it out of its stands & push around.. Important parameter as Roadster..
    7. Interceptor's rider footpegs brushing/ hitting the rider's shin (age old Interceptor flaw unresolved)..
    8. Interceptor needs lot more effort to maneuver in traffic due to bigger 18" wheels & higher weight.. Speed 400 is much more flickable..
    9. Speed 400 has much more sorted Rider Ergonomics & this is evident when you switch bikes one after the other..
    10. Interceptor footpeg position is very high up & therefore the rider calf is close to the hamstring with restricted/ tighter rider triangle.. Not comfortable for larger riders..
    11. Pillion seat ergonomics of Interceptor is very poor due to much high pillion footpeg position (again an age old flaw in the bike)..
    12. Ride quality of the Triumph is far superior at slow or high speed & the sophisticated suspension soaks up undulations amazingly well.. Interceptor rear suspension feels too soft & hits the limit/ bottoms out & the bike's overall suspension is imbalanced & inconsistent..
    13. Ceat Zoom Tryes on Interceptor is very poor & just no match for the Apollo H1s on Speed 400.. Even trye width is much more on Speed 400.. On a wet road the interceptor is scary to go above 60kmph due to poor tyres..
    14. Interceptor has lost its special touch anymore as it's 5yrs old flaws have not been resolved..
    Interceptor > Speed 400:-
    1. Interceptor is more linear & feels smoother even in redline..
    2. Interceptor feels more tractable (only the feeling)..
    3. Interceptor feels more relaxed to do speeds higher than 120kmph while Speed 400 screams..
    4. Interceptor cruises at lower rpm at 120kmph & therefore feels more relaxed due to higher cc & twin cylinders..
    5. Interceptor seat is much harder & therefore better than Speed 400 for long distance riding..

Guys, I cannot stress enough how important this comparison is for people like me who are trying to find now a daily commuter around this price (Int, Speed 400), in the best possible set-up right from the factory. Of course, we know, there is no perfect set-up right from the factory because that depends on the specific person's needs/body type etc but you know what I mean.
Buying the Int, fm what I have seen so far after a long period of extended search (watching review videos, long-term, all over the world, comparisons, getting in forums fm all over the world, hearing the same things fm so many different people) means you have to replace the seat, the tyres & the rear suspension to say the least!
The key thing for me was what you said regarding riding quality! That it's leaps & bounds better than the Int's. That's a very crucial factor for my intended purpose of using my next bike. Even though I prefer the looks of the Int (no question about it, I prefer the retro look to the modern), it's not that much of a "thing" for me if don't get the relevant riding quality I want/expect. So, if I can have a better experience right fm the get-go (for my intended purpose) riding the Speed 400, maybe the Sped 400 edges out the Int.
If RE had listened more to their customers' feedback over the last 5 years & had improved things like the suspension, the seat, and the tyres coming out of the factory (especially the suspension issues) the Int would absolutely have no worthy opponent in that price range!
As I said to a friend of mine, the last few years I was expecting the "big" companies to come back with a way to take a piece of the pie after they realized how much people wanted/needed bikes in the middle range capacity for daily commuting without breaking the bank!
Triumph, with the Speed 400/Scrambler X (and probably Honda with the CL500 I believe) found the way indirectly to target customers fm another cc category (400 v 650) by NOT offering less of a quality product to keep the price down BUT by reducing the engine capacity, with almost the same if not better performance!

Honestly speaking, I TD both the motorcycles and I preferred the Speed 400 over the Interceptor. The Interceptor is too heavy and hot for city rides and that's absolutely okay. I would never expect the Speed Twin or W800 to run cool and light in the city.

Speed 400 is a thorough modern bike wearing retro clothes. That said the Speed might be a better city bike due to its lower weight and compact size.

I suspect that given equal rider weight and skill level you will find that the smoother, less busy sounding motorcycle will be faster than it seems and the noisier, slower. I have seen many comparison road tests over the years where the bike that seemed slower was indeed faster. That is why numbers are everything when making that one bike is faster than another. Good! Next obvious comparison video would be Hero Xtreame 125 vs Apache RTR 200. Because somewhere in the past you had compared Apache 200 to Dominar 400! 😶
C’mon guys! There is a 250 CC difference between 400 and 650! Pricing also in different ballparks. Are you out of ideas for the YT videos? 🙄

I think what they are trying to say and saving it for the next video is that in terms of price to performance and competition triumph Speed 400 is a great bike but it lacks character which Royal Enfield have mastered over the years.
I too for many years was into fast and performance bikes but then resailed that that excitement of owning a bike like Duke 390, Dominor 400 or even Triumph Speed 400 for that matter wont be the same after a month or two. This might not be for every one per say but I would urge anyone one looking into getting a bike above 300cc to do an extensive test ride and focus on how the bike makes you feel.

very close 👌🏻 around 6,5 sec for both ., except acceleration on the same gear at the same speed cos triumph have shorter gearing at 6 gear feg it spin 5500 -5700 rpm at 100 gps vs re like 4300-4400 rpm so triumph have shorter gearing cos have wider peak and overall peak hp at higher rpm so its shorter gearing is must have for such engine charactersitcic add to this 40-45 kg less weight 👌🏻😎 and despite have 35% less max engine torque it can beat re in test like this 👉🏻 the same gear vs the same gear on the same speed acceleration up to some certain speed about what they mention in this test 👌🏻but when you excluding such test regulation and allow both rider go always on optimal gear each like in race it be very close unless huge diffrent in rider weight how much % fuel in tank each have or some misteakes some of rider than one can win with biger diffrenc put on both the same wright rider which do t do some stupid misteakes and it be very close 👌🏻 on paper re have 153 hp/ton with 90 kg rider vs triumph 151 hp/ton so everything be depend on drag drove train losess roll ressit wheell rotational inertia at speed like 145-150+ re 650 shpuld start have advantage thanks of more absolute power what mean more left him for accelerate only inertia when you calculate how much power eat all other ressit epsefially drag 👌🏻 triumph look on eye like it have biger drag its frontal surface area is on eye lil biger but it can be deceptive on eye 😉 anyway to 100 it be very close 👌🏻

p.s. mi sembra che la Speed 400 in Europa monterà gomme migliori, anche se il prezzo sarà molto più alto, si dice circa 5500 euro Franco concessionario, quindi quasi 6000 euro.
