I think it mostly comes down to the long distances and high-speed highways. Anytown USA has highways all around with traffic moving above speed limits (120 kph plus). Having a middle-weight bike and up is more comfortable for the majority of USA riding on highways. There are exceptions of course and you can obviously do highways with a 400. But I think that people gravitate to bigger bikes for that reason. I live in Canada and it's similar although where I live we have miles and miles of rural coastal 2 lane roads. My 500cc bike is perfect for those roads. It's plenty fast for the twisties and often sketchy road conditions. The right tool for the job.

Why is anything under 800cc a "beginner" bike in the US? What if you're and older rider and just want something more manageable?

I agree. I’m 63 years old and live in a big city area. I love my salvaged Kawasaki Z 400. I’ve owned lots of big bikes, such as the Vmax and such. Little Bikes are fun also. not to mention the gas mileage, price of insurance, and how cheap the parts are

I am far from an entry level rider. I'm 71 years old and have ridden motocycles since 1964. I've owned many motorcycles over the years, mostly Japanese models and four Harleys. At this point in my life I just want something to ride once in a while. So why would I want to speng $20,000 plus on a Harley or an Indian when I can buy a TRIUMPH for $4995. I was looking at the Speed Twin 900 but with its five speed gearbox it revs pretty good at highway speeds and costs twice as much as the Speed 400. Of course the 900's exhaust note is fantastic whereas the 400 reminds me of a dirt bike or an enduro, maybe a dual sport.
When I do ride on the haghway where the speed limit is 70 npm I usually keep it between 60 and 65. So the Speed 400 will be perfect for me.
My wife used to ride with me but she is now crippled from battling cancer eight times and having 12 surgeries. If she were able to ride with me I would probably go for the Speed Twin 900, but since she can no longer ride with me the Speed 400 will be fine. My wife and I have ridden over 350,000 miles on motocycles over the years, but cancer changes things.
At my age the light weight of the Speed 400 appeals to me. Easy to handle and easy to move around in the garage. As long as I don't ride two up, I think I will be fine. Plus I love the looks of the Speed 400 with the Triumph logo on the tank, the gold forks and the stainless exhuast sweeping down and then rearward.

@@vicwhoo6051 No, I am no one special, not a legend. I've read of others riding a million miles. We enjoyed motorcycle riding together for almost 30 years before her health got too bad. Her bones are very thin and brittle from all the radiation she's had plus she can no longer walk. I've helped her on and off bikes for the last four years, but now her bones are so brittle it isn't worth the risk. Currently she has five broken ribs and three collapsed vertebra so her riding days are over.
I didn't buy the Triumph, The Triumph salesperson was sort of nasty to me. So I ended up buying a Kawasaki Eliminator SE for just $800 more. It is a two cylinder and pretty quick for a 451cc. It is also light weight and fun to ride. I ride it every day and I am loving it. It has plenty of zip, it's the best cornering bike I've ever owned, it gets 66 MPG and the insurance is only $148.00 a year. The insurance on my Harley was $800 a year. LET THE GOOD TIME ROLL.

    • @genegoodwin8925
      @genegoodwin8925 3 месяца назад +2

@@teddysurf Well, that's hard to say. My wife's favorite was a 2002 Suzuki 1500cc Intruder. We put 87,300 miles on that one. The quickest was a Honda CB900. The most fun to ride was a Honda VLX, but it was no good on the highway because it only had a four speed gearbox and had a lot of vibration at higher speeds, but it cornered pretty good. I owned four Harleys and none of them would even come close to being my faorite. My new Kawasaki Eliminator is a lot of fun, it's quick and corners great, it might become my favortie. Time will tell.

I'm 5 foot 10 and just over 12 stone (about 170 pounds) and I like it's riding position and size but I wouldn't go for a smaller bike. I'm 63 and been riding since the age of 17, started to find bikes that weigh around 235 kg and have over 100 hp much more than I need. I rarely ride on motorways so I don't need to sustain high speeds for long periods of time. I use it for commuting and riding around the twisties in the English Peak District near to where I live. Great channel by the way.

Went to a Triumph demo ride today, they had the 400's. I rode everything else, and the 400 last, the 400 put the biggest grin on my face. I can't believe a 400 is so much fun to ride. Top speed was damn near 100mph. If you ever get a chance to do a Triumph demo ride, they are the best by far. No guides, they just hand you the bike and send you out alone. Wasn't very vibey at all, which I was surprised about. I don't see how Honda will ever sell another Grom or Kawasaki a z125 with these around. I didn't have any throttle issues. Such a fun bike.

Good review & fair comments. I’m 84, 5’8” with 30” inseam & it’s just right size for me, downsizing for weight mainly, as I have to push my bike over kerb & step, then turn it round! My Buell was getting a tad heavy for that! I’ve had my Speed 400 a few weeks now & like most things about it. Of course I’d like more power & torque, but without more weight! So this is a good compromise for my latter biking years!

Keep the speed at or slightly below legal speed and 400-500cc is all you need in any bike. Even in the US. Offroad. Adventure. Street. Cruiser. Touring. Sport...
Smaller bikes are cheaper to buy, to insure, to maintain, lighter to move around and safer (as you will be less tempted to go too fast or do something crazy).
The extra cc is a nice-to-have excess mostly present in a rich country.

    • @SquareHelmet

"Gene, but sometimes you need to accelerate out of a dangerous situation".
No, you don't. If you do, you should stop riding and rethink your approach. It's only a matter of time before you get into a dangerous situation out of which you won't be able to accelerate. The trick is to anticipate and not to get into a dangerous situation in the first place.
As for me, I am more likely to pass somebody or "catch up with traffic" (that is, build speed and increase risk 10x) when I ride KTM Super Duke or a litre Suzuki GSX. I end up needing to "accelerate out of dangerous situations" more often.
My XT250, Suzuki VanVan (and to a lesser extent Ninja 400) don't give that temptation to go super fast, so I stay at lower speeds, plan my line way more carefully, keep a much bigger distance from everybody else on the road... Feels safer and I have more time to look at the landscapes😊

79 years old, 5'7", 27" inseam and about 240 lbs (geared up), riding since 1961. This is bike #4 in my stable (a 2013 Tiger Explorer at the top). And this bike is a hoot. MUCH better than it has any right to be at the price.
I bought it for afternoon rides along back 2-lane roads (northern Virginia area - Shenandoah Valley, Appalachians) when I didn't want to haul out 600 lbs of Tiger - and it's superb pottering along in the 45-55 mph range.
And I don't have to worry about being launched into the middle of next week if I grab a bit too much throttle.
Seat and footpegs suck, though. But it's absolutely gorgeous. Especially after putting a tail tidy on.

I’ve test ridden this bike for a friend and it’s a gem of a little bike. She’s been riding a Honda PCX 150cc scooter for a few years and wants to move to a small bike with gears. She’s also very short and a lot of bikes don’t suit her height. This bike will suit her.
Very small and easy to manoeuvre/ride. Great for anyone that wants to throw their bike around or not be intimidated by it. But still enough power to have fun when you want to.
My only recommendation is changing the gearing to be a taller. It has enough power to accomodate this and it should make changing gears not as often.
The only other main thing she will add is a Givi windscreen and hand guards to help block wind for highway riding as it will be used for a bit of moto camping/touring.

A new rider here and just got my speed 400 a week ago and it's been fun so far. I chose this bike because of course, of its price. there are cheaper bikes at a lower displacements and even from Japanese big four which is known for reliability but here in the Philippines 400cc bikes are the minimum requirement to go in and out of town via expressways, so having an at least 400cc bike is a big deal, so getting this bike with its caliber for a cheaper price is definitely a value for money. plus the modern retro look is very good, although I much prefer the more classic retro styling, like the bonnie T100, I still need to be very familiar with the lower displacement bike first and of course to save up money for it. yes, in the next few years I'm gonna have a T100 as my endgame bike. Triumph did hooked me up with this.

Excellent bike. I have been riding it for many months now and I'm more and more happy with it. Top qualities: comfortable, for me and for my wife as a pillion; nimble and easy to maneuver (170kg); safe (great ABS brakes). Is it powerful? Not quite. But it's got enough horsepower to go on any road, including highways, even for long distances. Why is it called Speed? That's the mystery! You can go apparently up to 160km/h but it's not a nervous bike. It's actually smooth, which is, for me, another of its top qualities. Oh, and fuel efficiency? 3.6l/100km. For a 400cc with 40hp, it's pretty good.

There's reason why the manufacturers don't market this as a beginner bike... It makes experienced riders look the other way. Reality is, this bike pulls a huge premium in India and is incredibly popular. For those of us wanting to get into a Scrambler without putting down $15k or dealing with Ducati's air cooled model, these are awesome. Ive been riding over a decade and come from the liter bike world with several R1's, GSXR 1ks, CBR 1ks, and several lower displacement supersports. I went to 690 SMCR and it's been the funnest bike I have had. I also take delivery of a 24 400x tomorrow.
Ive come to realize the truth that it's funner to ride a slow bike fast, then a fast bike slow. I've been 200mph several times. But to run out a supermoto or little scrambler is much funner

Great video! I live in India and bought the red model off of the first batch that rolled out at the end of ‘23. Am not a beginner rider but I still love it, especially for its agility on cramped indian roads and cos of its pothole eating suspension. Drawbacks for me are footrests just slightly too far back causing aches over long distances (but this is not a tourer), plus you gotta be careful when washing the bike cos I have had the electronics bid adieu and even the immobilizer rendering the bike a brick after too rigorous a washing due to water getting into the electronic brains of the bike. Also the first batch off the Bajaj factory had an issue with the engine rarely stalling at low revs but that should have been fixed with a firmware upgrade for the US imports by now. All in all an absolutely astounding bike at that price point!

I'm sold that this is a solid quality bike, but you didn't have to convince me. And I'm glad it's done so well on the sales floor. But for you riders that need to stay around $2,000, don't forget the mid eighties Yamaha Radian 600 inline four at 400 lb, a motorcycle of the year in it's day. And I'm not gonna get out the spec sheet, but I'm betting the Ninja 500R beats this bike in most ways, unless you want the look, feel, and sound of the Triumph. Don't get me wrong, I've had two Radians, two Ninja 250, and one Ninja 500. I've also owned four Triumphs, and still own a Bonneville and a Legend, so I'm a fan. I'm very grateful to the riders that keep the manufactures in business and the used bike market supplied. Back in the seventies the 400cc bikes became 450cc twins and I don't see the need for a 400cc single street bike. I look at categories and to me the 400-500cc street bikes are a category where 450 is always preferable to 400. I've been riding 49+ years now and have always had many bikes, two dozen at the time. The 450cc street category is my go to beginner recommendation for the US, even better and funner than the 250cc (200-300cc) street bikes. Then there's the 650cc street category, at which point I can't think of a better pick than a used SV650, as big of a beginner standard/naked street bike as I would recommend. Then there are the Dual Purpose bikes for beginners, but that's another discussion. Hint: go for the 250cc (200-300cc) dual purpose beginner bikes.

It has plenty of power -- especially as you break in the engine and it smooths out some. I have the 400x and 2000 miles on it. The 400x has one tooth less up front (so it revs a bit higher than the Speed 400) and I have no problem getting to 80mph (85 indicated) or higher. I take it on the interstate all the time (for short runs -- I hate slabbing) and it keeps up fine, and this is at 6000 ft altitude.
