Ken Mahon this had potential to be awesome, if they actually bothered to learn the game before hand a little bit. It's like made for GG and they blew it. I am disappointed.
what? this is only a one-off? that's disappointing. would've been nice to see them continue this one. seems like the perfect kind of game to make into a series.
Shmandalf the game? that's your opinion. either way, just cause a game is boring doesn't mean the episodes will be boring. gamegrumps have played plenty of boring games to completion. they just didn't even try with this one, a game that has plenty of weird things that happen to give the grumps plenty of comedic material.
It was a really experimental game in general. Some things worked, some things didn't. Regardless it's one of the most unique games of the generation. It amazes me that the co-op roguelike formula introduced here didn't really take off and get improved upon.
Have been waiting a long time for you guys to do this game. :) Some tips: 1. Carrot Man is your best friend. 2. Conserve presents as much as possible. The later levels are brutal. 3. Fireworks = Promotion of Rank = Bigger health bar + possibility of 1UP. 4. Have fun. :D
How GG works: 1. Get game! 2. Start game. 3. Start recording. 4. Talk about shit while binge recording. 5. Finish recording 20 episodes. 6. Never record that video game again. 7. Not care if people liked the series. 8. Start new game. 9. Repeat!
GameGrumps You didn't watch the intro of the game, or use any presents, or otherwise utilize any of the mechanics the game has to offer. This game pioneered split-screen play, and really changed the way co-op worked, between the ability to FALL BETWEEN STAGES, and generally split up to cover more ground over a potentially infinite game. The game featured an EXP system that allows players to level up: (Level 1 being Weiner, Level 2 being Dufus, 3 being Poindexter, and SO ON.) The levels are randomly generated and full of different terrain, secret paths, items, and SNEAKING UP ON SANTA. Not to mention the soundtrack for this game is phenomenal. This game has a ton of progression, humor, different gameplay approaches, and generally just a ton of fun to be had. YOU CAN GET ROCKET BOOTS AND THROW TOMATOES. I have to say I'm really disappointed in your approach to this game. You let a hunk of gold fly by. ---Not that you'll read this, but you basically played this game like when a frat dude watches the lord of the rings and goes "PFFFT THIS SUCKS. GAYYY". I recommend you give it another chance and play it on your own time, outside of gamegrumps. Edit: I have to add that Arin seemed like he was trying to enjoy this game, and Danny was being a total Asshat. Why they still didn't use any items is completely beyond me.
I feel like Danny was being a "total Asshat" because he genuinely had no idea that you could use presents in the game, or do anything else besides walk around. For the most part, Danny generally doesn't know most of the games Arin shows him and Arin never tells him how to play them. Arin just throws Dan into a game and is like "Yea this game sucks" and then Dan never gets to see what a game is really like.
Allie Sangalli He didn't even attempt. They brought up the presents menu after collecting a ton of them, and didn't even ask "what's this menu", "what are all these items".
***** Except you only have 3 buttons and one is "Open up your inventory". The other two buttons are "Use" and "cancel". It shouldn't take a genius to figure that out.
Oh yes, a game I missed as a young lad, never owned a Genesis. I have had the pleasure of playing it with someone nonetheless, even doing so... to completion. It's a true shame the grumps aren't doing this as a series. If they'd given it a chance, I think they'd have rather enjoyed it as would we. Though sometimes I wonder if they do one-offs on purpose, so that they can play it together in their free time, off camera and in a more casual atmosphere. I just hope they do play it to completion themselves, as it really is a quirky and fun experience.

thejuniorinho Nope. Unfortunately he said "Next time on Game Grumps..." Which is what they say after all episodes, One-Off or otherwise. It's like opening a Total Bummer on your last life.
Probably not, 'cause this one is a one-off and most people seem to want it to be a series... Me, I just watch the videos and enjoy them, and occasionally get ideas for games I wanna try.
I played this game alot when i was a kid. The wraped gifts you pick up are bonuses. You don't know what's in them, but the same type of box will hold the same kind of bonus. Also, there are different "floors" like the floors of a skyscraper. When you fall off the edge, it brings you back to the previous floor.
This game was amazing. I've spent many hours in my youth playing this game. There were plenty of hidden things you had to do to progress in the game. Like When Danny fell off the side and just so happened to fall on an random island with an item on it. There's also parts where you have to get items on upper floors and go back to lower floors. It was a game of trial and error and just fully roaming the world and a lot of guessing & luck. AWESOME CLASSIC.
First Ducktales and now Toejam + earl? Why do you do one off's of good games and persist in doing multiple episodes of pure dog shit? Not a rhetorical question here!
I agree. It's like any pivotal Genesis game is inherently not worth their time. This is one of the games I was most looking forward to them playing, and they didn't open a SINGLE PRESENT and quit after one episode. TJ+E is a game that brings nostalgia to a lot of people, and they snubbed it. As Toejam would say: "Lame."
HEY YOU. Yeah. You, reading this comment. Don't go down into the comments section. Trust me, it 95% bitching about this being a one-off and 4.9% kids asking why they only play "these dumb retro games". The other .1% is me, warning you. You're welcome
Yeah man this one and the second one are some of my all time favorite games, this one especially is an amazing co-op game if you know what your doing, it's shitty when you see people like this that are popular on RUclips shitting on your childhood game and giving it an unfair chance because they suck at it and didn't grow up with it, sadly I get the same vibe with Earthworm Jim, some people were not meant to get it.
Adult Swim is publishing 'ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove', a new Toejam and Earl game. www.engadget.com/2016/08/24/adult-swim-is-publishing-toejam-and-earl-back-in-the-groove/
Hmmm. I never played this game as a kid, but I know it's a Genesis classic. But...I'm not seeing the appeal. The graphics and music are very meh and the overall pace of the game seems super slow... Am I missing something that made the game special?
They played the game without opening a single present (they give you powers/weapons and sometimes do bad stuff and are the main mechanic of the game), which is the equivalent to playing an FPS and never firing a single shot. Also, there's TONS of fun hilarious enemies they never got to see because they quit WAY too early. There's a reason it's considered a classic.
The music is not meh. The music is totally rad. The game is fun because it's entirely randomly generated, you get random items that you don't know what they are until you use one, or until you pay a specific NPC to identify them, and because it genuinely rewards cooperative play. You can share items between each other, split up to explore the world or stay together (because then you only have to use one present to give both players the bonus, which doesn't work when apart). The items span from ranged weapons to traps, to health items to mobility bonuses like speed, longer jumps or straight up flight, and you never know what you'll get until you try it. Meanwhile, the bigger your arsenal grows and the higher up you go, the more crazy enemies get thrown at you and the more treacherous the levels become, introducing things like quicksand, tornadoes and paths that only reveal yourself when you walk dangerously close to the edge of the world, and the whole decision of splitting up to cover more ground or staying together to share inventory becomes a crucial strategy for survival. And if you get a game over, the next time you play, the levels and items are all different again! It even shares the distinctly roguelike element of deciding whether to stick around on one level to collect more presents to become stronger for upcoming challenges, or if it's safer to just leave and beeline for the next spaceship part. So yeah, it's a cool little game. It moves slowly, yes, but that's because it's not an action game, and it gets hectic enough once the screen is covered in bees, boogie men and rabid ladies with shopping carts and you're trying to plant a maze of thorn bushes behind you to ward them off while you zig-zag toward that one unknown present on the ground that just might be your only escape.
I'm afraid this game might suffer from rose tinted glasses... I've never played this game before, and even knowing that you can open presents to get weapons, this game seems ultra boring. The music might have been "rad" when "rad" was "rad", but it doesn't hold up in the slightest.
An Actual Dinosaur Eh, that's not a very good comparison. The point of an FPS game in general is to kill all your opponents. While technically possible without shooting, it's not very realistic. The purpose of ToeJam and Earl is to collect all of the spaceship parts, and that can be fairly easily done without opening any presents. Whether it's as fun that way or not is a different issue, but we should separate the purpose from the mechanics. If anything, it'd probably be closer to playing an RPG without using any magic or summon spells. I played it back when it came out and was kinda iffy on it back then, but it really hasn't aged well and I can see why Dan wasn't really feeling it. It's just SLOW, and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, it makes the game get pretty boring and tedious when you're exploring absolutely MASSIVE maps looking for spaceship parts that may or may not have spawned on the particular level you're on while opening random presents that could help you or kill you, but you don't really know unless you open it, and oh by the way, there's a randomizer item that resets all the presents even if you do get most of them figured out. It was interesting at the time it came out, and by no means is it a bad game, but with how game design has changed in the last 20 years, a game like this just feels antiquated.
The presents are random in each playthrough, but the wrapping is always the same. It's basically a rougelike. The levels after the first island are also different each time you play, and in the main menu, there's a beat box multiplayer minigame.
“Is it possible that this game isn’t any good” dude I’m just now figuring out that you guys played this game and it’s still my favorite game!!! It’s so fun!!! It gets crazy hard and some of the enemies are funny as hell (and frustrating) I’m only 17 but I grew up with this game I hope you guys do a full play through one day
That's because you didn't play it as a kid. There's a huge amount of nostalgia I feel for this game because my younger self made a bigger deal out of it due to my overactive imagination. Playing this years later, I can say that it's not as fun as when I was a kid. I still have very fond memories of it.
I think being a kid has not as much to do with it. You just need a good friend to sit down and play it with. We and my friend played this for the first time last year all the way through, though we needed save states since you can't save. If this game has a save function, it'd be a lot better.
Why is it that games like DecapAttack are seemingly getting played to completion but then games like Duck Tales and ToeJam & Earl are getting one-offed? That's pretty fucked in my opinion.
They played it about the same way I did as a kid: 10mins in I had NO CLUE what I was doing, gave up trying to figure out what I was supposed to do & never borrowed it ever again
I love what the Grumps are doing, and I hope they don't stop doing it, but I REALLY wish they'd play more recent games. If not, then they can at least play games that are fun to watch. Their commentary on this was funny, but this game (for me) wasn't really anything I wanted to keep watching. They could play F-Zero for example. The one on Game cube. That is a very fast game. They could even play DKC Tropical Freeze for Wii U. It'll be fun to watch, and their commentary goes great with it as it has some great rage worthy moments. (Being a DKC game)
DUDE! DUDE! I Finally Found Another FZero GX Fan! Do You Remember The Part Where You Race Against Black Shadow And Blood Hawk And They Try To Kill You????!!! THAT WAS MY FAVORITE PART!!!
can y'all play a not retro game sometime soon? it seems like for the past month it's been only retro games with the exception of the hunting game. i get it, y'all like retro games, but could you please mix it up?
That's not what this show is about. Game Grumps plays retro console games. Steam Train plays PC games, sometimes retro, sometimes recent. I'm probably generalizing a bit but that's the gist of it.
Yeah, you're better off finding another channel. The Grumps usually play retro games, and I think it's safe to assume that most people here like it that way. Sure the occasional modern game is refreshing(when they're good), but retro games fit better with the Grumps style. Besides, there's plenty of channels that play modern games for you to enjoy.
Hotobu As often as they go into a game both not instantly assuming it is bad? Whenever they go into a game, and either one or both of them are assuming the game is bad without the other outright stopping them, they are bound to play it incorrectly. Whenever they believe a game is bad, they don't focus on the game, and end up interrupting each other when they start to regain focus. I can't hate them for it - just noting a common theme. In this for example: Arin notes they should leave, but then starts walking away from the telephone box. At the same time, Danny starts to note the phone is ringing, but Arin interrupts him and ends up following him far out of the map. They... Sigh. Just saying.. But they're cool.
Holy shit, havent even watched the video yet. I do know, however, that I will enjoy it. Gave it a thumb up just because the game. The fact this is a GG vid makes it even that much better. Thanks Danny and Arin, you guys literally make my day. After a long day of working in a foundry making the parts that make almost literally everyone's water turn on, the only thing that makes me laugh is the good ol game grumps, Every time you shower you should thank the game grumps for making videos that make men like me, who make the parts that allow you to have water in your house, just that much happier. Let's face it, pouring hot metal sucks, but the game grumps don't so life is wonderful! keep it up GameGrumps I need your entertainment to keep me going.

I'm 17 and this game is the game that introduced me to gaming. Just thank you so much for bringing childhood memories back to me

Oh, snap! Good idea.
Game Grumps are literally one of the most hilarious youtube channels there is.
There, this video is two minutes longer than ten minutes. Do people forgive the two-minute short episode now?
Probably not, 'cause this one is a one-off and most people seem to want it to be a series...
Me, I just watch the videos and enjoy them, and occasionally get ideas for games I wanna try.
"Toe Jam, Big Earl, Rap, Jamming!" Four of the things I remember the most of this game.
WHATTTTTT
IT SUCKS that this is a One Off.... I love this frick'n game.
I don't see a Part:1. Is this a one-off? IS THIS A ONE-OFF???
yup
This game was amazing. I've spent many hours in my youth playing this game. There were plenty of hidden things you had to do to progress in the game. Like When Danny fell off the side and just so happened to fall on an random island with an item on it. There's also parts where you have to get items on upper floors and go back to lower floors. It was a game of trial and error and just fully roaming the world and a lot of guessing & luck. AWESOME CLASSIC.
Too bad they never dropped in on a grommet. They could've been the most swood guys ever...
I can't believe Alan Moore sent you guys a game. He'll probably request his credit to be removed from this video.
First Ducktales and now Toejam + earl?
Why do you do one off's of good games and persist in doing multiple episodes of pure dog shit? Not a rhetorical question here!
Skylynxify Reborn Im not referring specifically to decap attack.
Toejam + earl isn't *that* good.
If anything you only think it's a great game because of nostalgia.
Wow... It's almost as if taste is subjective?!
Dasten What are you referring to?
I agree. It's like any pivotal Genesis game is inherently not worth their time. This is one of the games I was most looking forward to them playing, and they didn't open a SINGLE PRESENT and quit after one episode. TJ+E is a game that brings nostalgia to a lot of people, and they snubbed it. As Toejam would say: "Lame."
bees seem to be another common grump enemy.
All the games to make a series out of and this... THIS... Is a damn one off? ugh

This game is definitely an acquired taste, I'll give it that.
Happy three year anniversary to this episode of Game Grumps.
HEY YOU. Yeah. You, reading this comment. Don't go down into the comments section. Trust me, it 95% bitching about this being a one-off and 4.9% kids asking why they only play "these dumb retro games". The other .1% is me, warning you.

God damn, I love when the Grumps play something that I don't remember but once they are playing the memories come back like "Ohhh shit yeah"
This was my favorite Genesis game growing up. It saddens me to see how bad they were at it. So many wasted presents...

Loving your picture. Been wanting to find a copy of Ristar for a while.
FINALLY! I have been waiting for this day!
An Actual Dinosaur
Eh, that's not a very good comparison.
It gets crazy hard and some of the enemies are funny as hell (and frustrating) I’m only 17 but I grew up with this game I hope you guys do a full play through one day
I hear you, Danny. I, too, found myself confused and underwhelmed the first time I saw this game after hearing people rave about it for years.
FunniestofFunny You're probably right. I tried playing it with a friend as well but unfortunately he got bored quickly and wanted to quit playing.
Thank you they've finally played it. I've been waiting for this moment. Now if they do Earworm Jim I can die somewhat happy.
Y U NO use presents!!!
LOVE TOEJAM AND EARL!!!! The music was the best game track. You guys should play Road Rash II if you haven't already.
+SoLoMoN DaViDSoN wait, so you also didn't try any of the basic functions of the game (push B, then use present)?

Haven't watched the ep yet, but this is one of my all-time favorite games. Can't wait to watch this episode.
I was literally on the edge of my seat. I think the fast paced action of the game would go great with Dan and Arin's style of comedy.
That's what i'm saying.
But seriously they need to play that game may it be a Game Grumps Versus or even in a surprise return of Steam Rolled
plus i really want Dan to say "The Ticket Pays For The Whole Seat But You Only Need The Eeeeeeeedge" again
why is it every time someone asks for more recent games they then seem to list off a bunch of nintendo titles =/
5:50 ToeJam and Earl were originally named FlowJam and Whirl.
can y'all play a not retro game sometime soon? it seems like for the past month it's been only retro games with the exception of the hunting game. i get it, y'all like retro games, but could you please mix it up?
That's not what this show is about. Game Grumps plays retro console games. Steam Train plays PC games, sometimes retro, sometimes recent.
I'm probably generalizing a bit but that's the gist of it.
Yeah, you're better off finding another channel. The Grumps usually play retro games, and I think it's safe to assume that most people here like it that way.
Sure the occasional modern game is refreshing(when they're good), but retro games fit better with the Grumps style.
Besides, there's plenty of channels that play modern games for you to enjoy.
So much nostalgia for me in this game. Used to co-op play it with my brother when I was a wee lad.

They aren't playing it right...
How often do they play anything right?
