What a revolutionary game. Randomly generated levels. Randomized items. Multiplayer split screen. A unique take on earth. Hip hop elements. Promotions.
I freaken love this game! My brother and I beat this game together... just once. But you missed several points: 1. You earn experience points when you open presents, which levels you up faster. You should actually open presents early to identify them and level up. Levelling up makes your health bar longer. 2. Uncovering tiles of the map also contributes to leveling, so explore the early levels a lot while it's still relatively easy before you even head up higher. Getting the phone doesn't count. 3. If, say, Earl is badly injured and Toejam is healthy, you should both walk into each other. You'll do a high-five, which makes both of your health even. 4. On level one, there is another island at the north-north-east with a bunch of presents. 5. The presents that have the big question mark are NEVER identified and are different every time. Don't open these, and don't waste money having the professor identify them. 6. Despite what I said earlier about opening presents a lot, you want to identify the randomizer as soon as possible using the professor. All of your money should go to him. If you identify that present, the rest of the game is easier. Again, never open the big question mark present. 7. You can sneak by holding down one of the buttons. Most enemies are asleep before you approach them, and you can sneak by. Root beer heals you slightly, but is actually bad because it wakes enemies up. 8. You can sneak up on Santa! If you catch him, he drops presents before he flies away. He's always on level 4, I think even in random world. He's on other levels too, but I don't remember which. 9. If Toejam falls down a level, then Earl falls down to the same level, you will fall to the same spot where your friend is. In fact, you will fall ON your friend, flattening him. As I recall, that doesn't eat your health though. 10. You can tell if a mailbox is fake by watching it for a bit. A fake one occasionally pokes its eyes out. You shouldn't normally buy presents though unless you've identified a lot of them and need something specific.
In the new Castlevania : Lords of Shadow 2 : Revelations you get one diary scroll and the knights name is Angry Sir Rolfe. This can't be a coincidence :D

You could really tell James was very passionate about getting all the ship pieces! It's great to see Mike & James enjoying a game this much, and not having to pick up trash to get into theme park rides lol; it really lead to some intense, exciting moments! Definitely one of my favourite episodes, I look forward to more like this in the future!

This was my favorite Genesis game by far, you should definitely give it another shot. It still holds up fairly well and it's a very unique and quirky game.

In present menu, press C button to drop presents to thow away bad ones or to exchange with your partner When enemies are sleeping, hold A button (with no item equipped) to walk silent. Use the same walking style to take Santa from the back to get a lot of presents When your partner has lower health than you, just walk in front of each other to Hi-5 to share some energy Hope It hepls

Yeah, AVGN videos take a while to put together. So I figured this would be a good thing to put out between Nerd episodes. Besides, it gives us a chance to play some good games we wouldn't talk about on AVGN. And since I edit these, it leaves James time to work on the movie.
The graphics style, even with the walking animation, or the font, and the music, epitomizes the early 90s feel for me. Reminds me of those 90s mac games we would play at school. Zoombini's anyone?
I like Earl. This game is still fun today. I really like the music to it. I wish Sega would make an HD version of this. Keep it exactly the way it looks now but just use high quality art and sound. Would be awesome. I'd buy it.
The best 'James & Mike Mondays' ever! ToeJam and Earl is my favourite game of all time (so far!). I remember Mark Voorsanger and Greg Johnson saying that ToeJam & Earl 2 became a platformer due to pressure from Sega at the time. Now I'd love TJ&E Productions to go back and make the ToeJam & Earl 2 they wanted to, with the rise of indie games and retro graphics style I think it would be a huge success.

The funny thing is that it wasn't being pushed into the water that killed him; it was the lawnmower itself simply taking away his health. As seen later on, you can swim in the water, so it wasn't that. It makes it that much more amusing when we see Mike blaming the wrong thing for his death!
Trixie Lulamoon I know you can swim in the game but remember when Mike was swimming in the water he drowned when he was being chased by a swarm of bees and a shark but yea his reaction to games being so complicated, unfair and tedious is funny. Also there's another game that James and Mike have played remember Bubsy in Fractured Furry Tales when they play that game Mike dies a couple of times and then he had another one of those "angry rage moments" he was yelling at the tv but what makes it a little more funny is that James just sits there smiling without trying to bust out laughing at Mike lol.
It's actually based on the game Rogue itself, the creator was a big fan of that game. That's why little bridges of land appear (like tunnels in Rogue), why the game is a series of floors, why the power-ups are presents that you need to identify: and of course, why the game is procedurally generated.
When you drop off the edge, if your friend is below you you ALWAYS drop to where they are. So you didn't have to meet up before dropping. Also, do you guys know about high-fiving? If you walk towards each other you high-five and you split your health with each other. Oh, and you can also take lives off the other player, so you could have kept it going two player >_>
It's heavily influenced by the genre but it's is not a "rogue-like" in the classical meaning since it's not turn-based but real-time action and not even in the modern "roguelite" genre since there is lives/1ups in this game.
Compare the reactions of James and Mike in this vid with other videos - they're shouting at the TV, laughing or standing up in surprise but that's just down to the sudden change in luck that they keep running into while playing. That's the hook and it becomes even more chaotic in 2-player. So many WTF moments keep you on your toes . Really fun old school game and I just don't get why so many are hating this one! You're loss!!

So close guys! :p It goes as far as Level 25 no matter what mode you play, so you were only 3 levels away from finishing the game. You definitely had a good idea of how to complete the game (hoarding presents for the carrot) and you knew about Level 0. It is possible to trick the tornados from getting you though as they travel fastest on a diagonal plane. Pretend to go in one direction diagonally but then change direction quickly and the tornado will whiz past you if done correctly. Those ice cream trucks though.......damn them. As you can tell, one of my all time favorite game. :p
I remember that if you get a pair of rocket skates and return to ground level you skate across water to bottom left corner of map and find an island with a hole. Drop through the hole and you end up on a chill out island with a hot tub and stuff :)

I liked street fighter and mortal kombat and he liked mario cart more. This was something we could always agree on. The "Nerd herd" always made us laugh for some reason but our favorite was the boogeyman. boogie boogie boogie

I used to LOVE this game, but hard as HELL in the higher levels. A couple things they didn't touch on: when one person's low on power, they can high five each other to share the power. Also, when enemies are sleeping, you can tiptoe past them to not wake them up.
How very nostalgic, thanks for sharing this it's really nice to see this again if only for the memories. I remember this game when my cousin Steven brought his Genesis over to my home as a child back in 1999. One of the areas that stuck with me was this weird world that looked like it was covered in some cheese sauce or something.
Kinda reminds me of Earthbound a little bit, what with the crazy music, the random enemies, the flashing and "cool" lettering, and all that. And, as we all know, Earthbound rules. So, yeah, that says enough.

As roguelikes have become more recognized and popular these days, the original devs should try to resurrect Toejam and Earl...they would probably find a lot of support. Possibly through Kickstarter. If they stayed true to the original formula, I'd certainly be interested. I know the original dev is still in the biz since he created the recently released Doki Doki Universe.
this is my favorite episode of Mondays... so funny hearing Mike screaming out "boogey-man!!" and then getting mad from losing presents hard not to laugh out loud...
Btw, finally beating this game was totally satisfying after I played it so much with my brother. Also, I kinda can't believe I sat through this whole video. But it was hilarious watching them freak out because I remember reacting the same way as a kid (sans the cuss words of course).
I am sad to report that I too sat through the entire video. That was such a great game. I kept getting frustrated that they weren't using the roads. That's an integral part of the gameplay because it let's you move a little bit faster. Combining the road with the hightops was the way to go.
I have solved this game over 100 times now. The trick is definitely figuring out the presents as early as possible. Randomizer is the worst present by far. Make sure you have Icarus Wings and Hitops for levels 17-20 when the crazy ice cream trucks come around. Boombox is also great to use when the ice cream truck is around.

I was 9 when this dropped (Xmas, '91)...my best friend and I would stay up all night playing. I don't think I ever beat it.

I used to LOVE this game, but hard as HELL in the higher levels. A couple things they didn't touch on: when one person's low on power, they can high five each other to share the power. Also, when enemies are sleeping, you can tiptoe past them to not wake them up.
How very nostalgic, thanks for sharing this it's really nice to see this again if only for the memories. I remember this game when my cousin Steven brought his Genesis over to my home as a child back in 1999. One of the areas that stuck with me was this weird world that looked like it was covered in some cheese sauce or something.
Kinda reminds me of Earthbound a little bit, what with the crazy music, the random enemies, the flashing and "cool" lettering, and all that. And, as we all know, Earthbound rules. So, yeah, that says enough.

Bros, you forgot you can share lives with each other if one player loses all their lives? (Pressing start, I think?) Also you can high-five to average your HP when you're on the same screen by standing next to each other and pressing down.

As roguelikes have become more recognized and popular these days, the original devs should try to resurrect Toejam and Earl...they would probably find a lot of support. Possibly through Kickstarter. If they stayed true to the original formula, I'd certainly be interested. I know the original dev is still in the biz since he created the recently released Doki Doki Universe.

I remember this game scored like about 60% in most of our magazines (UK).
But over time it's aged very well and is still a genius two player game.

Btw, finally beating this game was totally satisfying after I played it so much with my brother. Also, I kinda can't believe I sat through this whole video. But it was hilarious watching them freak out because I remember reacting the same way as a kid (sans the cuss words of course).
I am sad to report that I too sat through the entire video. That was such a great game.
I kept getting frustrated that they weren't using the roads. That's an integral part of the gameplay because it let's you move a little bit faster. Combining the road with the hightops was the way to go.
I have solved this game over 100 times now. The trick is definitely figuring out the presents as early as possible. Randomizer is the worst present by far. Make sure you have Icarus Wings and Hitops for levels 17-20 when the crazy ice cream trucks come around. Boombox is also great to use when the ice cream truck is around.
