  • Knowing how fast the bullets are flying out of your rifle or pistol's barrel is fairly important when you hope to achieve accuracy and consistency. Garmin, better known for their watches and GPS units, have entered the fray with a chronograph which the Redneck Preppy thinks might be the best commercial offering: the Garmin Xero C1 Pro Chronograph.

UPDATE: It would appear that Garmin did itself no favours with its statement that the battery in the unit wasn't user replaceable. After the review went live I found a post on a forum in which someone received a non-functional unit from Garmin so they decided to open it up. The battery is a standard one that Garmin uses in several of their models and that you can buy yourself. It appears that replacing the battery isn't quite the task that Garmin implicitly made it out to be with their claim of non-replaceability.

Is it still water resistant after you open the case?

I’ve seen multiple review videos on this product by this point from some decently sized channels and this 800 view video was by far the most informative and entertaining to watch. Definitely subbing! Keep it up, this was the first video I’ve seen from you!

Thanks for the great review, I have both the magneto speed(Price $450) and the fairly new to the market, FX Outdoors chrono($1000) and I have found the Garmin is head & shoulders above them both.

Thanks for your kind word, very much appreciated.
Yeah, the more I use the Garmin, the more I really love it. Granted, I came from an old school optical chrono, so it wasn't hard to beat.
I like the bigger screen on the FX though. Can't have everything though, ha ha

    Very nice, EXCELLENT!
Garmin must have known from their R&D how much of a game changer this would be to keep the pricing up with Lab Radar. However, should you look at the other shooting devices that Garmin is producing, such as the Trap Shooting Chronograph to see whether you are ahead or behind the clay disc, they are one of a kind devices. Would have been nice for the consumer if they could have marketed it a lower pricing, only so much loose change. I have seen specials on the Lab Radar at over $100 discount to be competitive.
The biggest advancement was getting the device into that coat pocket size for portability (deck of playing cards as other’s have described the Xero C1 Pro). Plus being accurate as other Chronograph’s which others compared in RUclips postings. Not for just rifles, but for pistols, bow and arrow, crossbow, pellet guns.
Would have been nice for the price to have included either soft sided or hard sided case. Guess something for the after market vendors to produce, just like the rifle mounts.

The price point is a hefty one and I absolutely agree that a case should have came with it -- even if only soft-sided. I was rather surprised, to be honest, that it didn't.
      And thanks for watching!

Are you able to import the velocity data from the Garmin in a format that Quikload or GRT can use for load development and OBT like LabRadar?

To be honest, I don't know. It is in a CSV format so I imagine it can't be difficult to import it.

Great review, I feel the same way about the battery, but small and simple is hard to beat. I might have to put that on my Christmas list and see how much im loved

The good news is after the review went live I was on a forum and found out that someone got a bum unit and they decided to open it up. Turns out the battery is in fact replaceable and you can buy them, at least for the moment, fairly easily. So Garmin did themselves no favours by declaring it non-user replaceable.
I understand why they did that, but I would have saved myself the rant.

It works with shotgun slugs, but I don't believe it works with shot.

I'll wait for version 2 or for a competitor to release a "me too" product at a lower price and more features. I fail to see why something like this should cost $500+.

Labradar's regular price is US$625, though at this very moment it's on sale for $500. The Magnetospeed V3 is US$450.
At US$600 I don't think the Garmin is out of line with its near peer competitors, especially given how much of an improvement most believe it to be over the Labradar and Magnetospeed.
But that said, I can dig your eyebrow raise at the price. It's not cheap, but these kinds of things never are. At the end of the day, if someone wants a chronograph, an old-fashioned optical chronograph is still fairly low-priced and if you use it right, will provide the data you'd want.

Warranty will be void if you mount it to the rifle and not use it as it's designed tripod, it states on their website.
