No doubt that is a reference to their show, the first American concert, in Washington, DC at the Washington Coliseum on February 11th, 1964 where they played in what was essentially a boxing match set up. The audience was, indeed, on all sides. Ringo's drum kit was placed on a circular platform that the Beatles themselves had to rotate after every few songs so that they could face a different part of the audience.

It's true. When they first started their manager Brian Epstein would only pay them a small weekly allowance and "safely held" the rest for them (unlike their later manager Allan Klein who basically just stole from them). Then when the money finally started filtering through HMC charged them a shedload of tax (including a "supertax" of up to 95%!!!) which led to George writing the song 'Taxman'. As they later said, "Everyone's making money off the Beatles except us".
