Month ago i have finally met my first shark, while falling down the rope on breathhold about 35 meters deep. I calmly stopped, turned around and started ascent by hands. She was 2.5-3.0 meters grey shark i think so. She just gently went around me about 90 degrees of the circle in distance about 5 meters and resumed her calm soaring straight to the blue abyss. What a beautiful experience now that you lived thru it! seemed extremely quite and gentle, doesn't appear that you were ever in any real danger but I'm sure the heart was beating loud and strong
She had indeed a long line caught into her mouth. Not sure what it was. Maybe from an attached tuna head they use to attract sharks in Guadalupe for cage diving. I know, we should have tried to help and remove it
I've done 6 or 7 dives at Catalina and luckily never encounter one. That would be a cool experience though. Every time I dive la jolla cove though it's in the back of my mind.. Coming up from a 150' and doing those deco stops are nerve wracking..
Looks like she’s already eaten a diver, not likely to eat another one. Don’t play it like they aren’t aggressive, it’s only a question if they are starving or not.
if the rope came from cage diving, then it would indeed be quite bad. It is sad the general public is so afraid of sharks and that so many are being killed every year.
Large pregnant female. She looked to be in somewhat of an aggressive posture (at least initially), her back was arched and her pectoral fins were pointed down. Your reaction to her likely deescalated the encounter and made for a more positive experience.
From what i remember expert telling me: likely pregnant but difficult to say for sure, as could be also recently well fed. Someone would need to study more!
What a gorgeous majestic animal!!!! White shark's maybe some of the Baddest creatures that swim in our oceans but they are absolutely beautiful and they are just something to behold! That's the biggest thing on my bucket list is to see one up close but I'm definitely not stupid enough to get in the water with one!!!! My dad hooked a fought a 14 foot Hammer head and I was completely blown away by that I can't imagine having a 18 foot great white shark swimming in front of me!!!!!
Unless you cage dive, which maybe isn't that eco-friendly, it is very unusual for scuba divers to see GW. The bubbles and noise really don't call for for regular sea lion food stuff. This is why we still feel super lucky about this encounter!
@@SailingIdefix I have to admit that you are crazy! I used to swim in salt water hell I grew up learning how to swim in the bayou's of Louisiana but after my cousin lost a foot to a 9 foot bull shark you couldn't get me in that water! All of the years I've fished off of the coast of Louisiana I never knew that white sharks come into the Gulf of Mexico and I didn't know that they come to the mouth of the Mississippi River chasing tuna! My cousin was fishing for bull reds at the mouth of the Mississippi River and he had a red cut in half then as it was happening again he thought it was either a Tiger or bull but as the fish got closer to the boat he saw a 13 foot great white chasing the red! I'm sorry but you are crazy getting in the water knowing that those monsters are there!!! Good luck and stay safe!!!!!
@@williamoleschoolarendt7016 Well, i am not sure i would dive in murky water and in the rivers in Louisiana cost indeed. Issue is visibility too. Bull sharks are probably more dangerous than GW just based on the waters they swim in. Also in general, scuba diving would likely be safer in shark areas than swimming early mornings or late afternoon with a drysuit. You just look like a sea lion at feeding time !
@@SailingIdefix we were water skiing in Lake Ponchatrain years ago and my cousin jumped the wake of another boat going the opposite direction and when he fell we circled back around to pick him up and right as my other cousin reached for his hand the bull shark hit him! It clamped onto his ankle and when we wrestled him away from the shark his foot was gone! Lake Ponchatrain is brackish water especially near the canals and bayou's that feed into the lake! We were close to a bayou when it happened! Lately since they have been opening the Bonne Carre spillway we haven't seen as many sharks! In fact a few years ago when they hadn't opened the spillway in a while we had reports of Tigers being caught and seen in the middle of the lake! I'm really beginning to wonder if they don't open the spillway for a few years I wonder if the White shark's would enter Lake Ponchatrain since they have been spotted all around the southern coast? Anyway Peace out stay safe!!!
difficult to tell. Maybe it was something she got from a cage diving where they attract sharks with tuna heads attached to ropes like this. Or she ate something else attached to the rope. Maybe we should have helped... but it was too much for a first experience! Next time!
they can say not aggresively, but her posture says different.whether that was because she felt threatened,or because of rope , i couldnt say,but mouth agape,& fins pointed down says she wasnt happy.it could be that because the water was murky & felt an animal presence , she was alert for an attack, especially given that she looks pregnant, but that could also mean she had only just fed.the good thing for them is that they kept somebody facing her, because if there had been loss of any sight between them, then that could have been a trigger.to be fair it could also have been a stay away from me sign too,but i doubt she has had many actually approach her . this is why its so hard to read what these signs are meaning at any given time.just like with humans, they probably show similar emotions for various different situations , & probably the best reaction to all of them is to stay calm, because you cant expect anybody facing you , to stay calm,if your not yourself.
yes, very hard to read, especially we had no experience and no clue about big shark behavior (got many updates from marine and sharks specialists AFTER!). Mostly, we were exited because such an encounter is so rare. I believe she would have been stressed because of the rope in her mouth. Wether she was asking for help is a totally different interpretation :-) we didn't really have in mind in these short minutes ...
Beautiful animal. That is definitely a female as it is missing the telltale claspers on the lower belly which would make it a male. She looks quite pregnant and probably just weeks or perhaps days from giving birth. If she had given birth while you were filming you would have made a fortune as no film has ever been made of a Great White Shark giving birth. This video clearly contradicts all the BS about these sharks being mindless killers. If she wanted to she could have killed and eaten all of you. She was merely curious and checking you out. I have had encounters with dozens of different sharks including Great Whites, Tigers, Lemons, Makos, Black Tip Reef, Hammerhead, Sand Tigers, Threshers, Blues, Pelagic White Tips, Bulls, etc. during my 40+ years of diving. The one shark that deserves the most respect and I consider the most dangerous of all is the Bull Shark. They will simply attack with no provocation or warning. Again great video and damn shame you couldn't have helped remove that line from that beautiful dinosaur age creature. I wish her a long and safe life. Thanks for sharing, Cyrille, and be safe out there.
agreed. i dont get while people blame so much on them. she was checking us out, we'll never know why. Maybe just curious as not used to see divers at this depth. Maybe because due to shark feeding, she got this line on her teeth and now associate divers with food, or problem. Or maybe she was hunting around the wreck and we just came disturbing her territory. She wasn't afraid of all the bubbles we were making but eventually got scared of the uw-scooters.
@@SailingIdefix "she was checking us out, we'll never know why. Maybe just curious"... maybe she was checking you out as a possible meal however cautious about it... like you said, none of you shark lovers know what they are up to... stop speaking as if they aren't a potential threat...
Quite hard to tell under water and due to emotions!! but based on the some markers (the chain/line used to ascent), probably about or little more than 5m.
You're so lucky to see white shark in open water without cages. I hope I get lucky and see a white shark. This shark was a true player! More proof that sharks aren't these mindless killers! Nice vid!
Really not. While we certainly felt uncomfortable realizing what we were facing, we also were exited by the experience. And never thought before or after of bringing anything which could hurt sharks. What we saw however, was she got scared from the underwater scooters coming down.
@@YampaYak-vd1xo actually, it doesn't really, as the few deterrent devices which can of work, are only very short distance. Maybe they don't hurt shark, maybe they do, i don't speak shark very well.
Yes she does. We were not prepared for that for this first encounter. Need a bit of more practice to play dentist with GWS. Note we did do a second dive 90min later but she didn’t show up. It is a bit sad this type of things (the rope blocked in her mouth) happen. I have witnessed this multiple time on other (smaller) sharks 😢
I wonder if there is still someone holding on to the other end of that line and the shark got him instead of a fish head cause it looks like one of them lines what they bait up to bring in the Sharks when in the cage top video
Always facing her is probably the only thing saved you guys. But if she wanted one of you there's nothing you can do about it. The craziest thing is how well her camo works. Anything more then 50 feet or so and she disappears into the back ground. Just crazy!
I know its a long shot but I chanced upon this.... what it says about the appearance and behavior of this shark may match. The picture is a bit blurry. sharkdivingxperts.com/white-shark-profiles/sarah/
Well, not sure Catalina is known specifically for that, but there are lots of little sharks around the kelp. Hard to spot because often frightened. Usually super happy to spot a leopard shark of any size while diving, but not frequent. So of course a GW...!
Nice big, healthy, pregnant female white shark. Pec fins lowered, mouth open....she is in defense mode and slightly agitated. Thank goodness her curiosity and trepidation levels were higher than her hunger and territorial level and in these waters off our coastline, mature white sharks have their hunger curbed because it is a birthing area....she is probably close to giving birth....amazing animal.
Stress likely induced by the rope she had in her mouth too. I was told her behavior wasn't agressive and the GWS attack at full speed from far away, so eventually curiosity...
I agree, seems this shark was not very interested in you. Full speed attacks are not very common on humans, I believe most bites are more driven by curiosity. An incredible sighting and an experience you won't forget in any case!
it's not clear what it was. Wasn't fishing line but more a long small rope. Possibly something from a shark feeding exercise where they attached a large tuna head to attack the sharks. May have been blocked somehow after she took the bait. Very unfortunate. We should have tried to remove it, but i was not sure about the possible cooperation
No, I think you probably made the right decision at the time. I wouldnt touch that rope while in such a vulnerable position and other people around that could also be hurt or killed. Doing that could have triggered a very bad response even though you wanted to do something good for her.
Sharks are very misunderstood and its critical we protect them from commercial fishing and fishing in general. They are a key pillar of the food chain and essential for maintaining healthy oceans. I wish the powers that be, would clamp down on the exploitation of our oceans, not just sharks but all forms of commercial activity with in the oceans. This clip helps prove they are not the mindless man eaters the media would have us believe, they are just really large underwater puppy dogs.
If that's legit, that's an amazingly majestic experience!! not sure if I'd have the nerve to keep in motion I think I'd freeze up. I'd definitely want it under these conditions to, that shark seemed to be more wtf than hungry, thankfully I'd agree with most maybe pregnant and just curious. Oh Kudos on the music usually it's the same 4-5 songs out there, epic music for an epic experience
Steven Ramos what the hell do you mean if that's legit? He shot the video while diving....what's not legit about that??? Does that look like a CGI Great White??? Wake up dude and don't insult someone who was nice enough to share their dive with a Great White with us all!! This video also shows that they are not mindless killing machines that most moronic idiots think they are.
We had limited choice as we were 30min from the surface. As mentioned, we had various emotions, the first being, this is super cool as extremely rate and we have a camera! But then it was: shoot, this is a GWS, we may be at risk if she decide to test. There was definitely a freezing moment. But after a bit, we relaxed a bit. It only lasted about 4min total.
Great video! I’m amazed at the size of these sharks. I worked offshore many years ago and one day on the deck of the platform “oil rig” I saw the largest shark 🦈 ever in my life. I didn’t have a camera on me as it was all work and no play on that rig, but I’ll never forget that moment. My adrenaline spiked and I ran to tell another crew member, then had to get back to work.
Of course. But I was told this is now how they attack. Not by getting close like this. They come fast and straight from far away. But didn’t know much then about it. Though the long 20ft stop in open ocean not seeing her was also not very comfortable! But we went back for dive 2 😊
It’s not Deep Blue. Look at the dorsal fin 1:17 then look up any image of DB. That’s a very distinct dorsal, and looks more like Ophelia, a GW tagged and named just off Huntington/Seal Beaches a few years ago. Ocearch and other shark trackers (trackingsharks website) have very good directories of dorsals. A group in NZ modified facial recognition software to “barcode” the fin into 3 section for more accurate identification. If I can find her name I’ll come back and post it.
That is not a 18 footer. The sharks girth is not wide enough. It should be approximately 8’ across. The rope and the diver’s fins indicate, clearly, that the shark is in the 14’ to 15’ range.

Possible explanation (not sure): when they do cage diving, they attach a tuna head to a rope to attract the shark. Maybe something went wrong and she took the entire thing with the rope getting blocked on her tooth. Could be something else, but clearly was bothering her.

What a beautiful experience now that you lived thru it! seemed extremely quite and gentle, doesn't appear that you were ever in any real danger but I'm sure the heart was beating loud and strong
Exactly. Was told after the fact it wasn’t an agressive behavior but there was a moment of doubt! (After excitement and before a bit of a relax …)
I suspect she might be pregnant
Was it tangled in a line ?
She had indeed a long line caught into her mouth. Not sure what it was. Maybe from an attached tuna head they use to attract sharks in Guadalupe for cage diving.
I know, we should have tried to help and remove it
I've done 6 or 7 dives at Catalina and luckily never encounter one. That would be a cool experience though. Every time I dive la jolla cove though it's in the back of my mind.. Coming up from a 150' and doing those deco stops are nerve wracking..
Unlikely a large GWS would venture into La Jolla cove, but people have seen seven gills sharks, and few times! It is a really cool spot too!
Looks like she’s already eaten a diver, not likely to eat another one.
Don’t play it like they aren’t aggressive, it’s only a question if they are starving or not.
It might be Deep Blue...but not entirely sure...Deep blue has a heart shaped spot upside down right next to the pectorals.
Magnificent & terrifying all at the same time.
Magnificent for sure. Terrifying a bit strong but certainly a minute outside of comfort level! We went back for dive two !
This music is epic
As is the experience !!
Amazing video mate. Thank you for sharing this
Great footage, nice song. Hopefully these 'sports divers' are regulated more in the future and GW's get sanctury areas.
if the rope came from cage diving, then it would indeed be quite bad. It is sad the general public is so afraid of sharks and that so many are being killed every year.
Since this was 9 years ago would the dorsal fin heal so it looks normal today?
i hope so. But the other big question and concern was wether she managed to get rid of the rope in her mouth!
Fantastic! What depth?
150 feet. which was kind of the WTH factor as we had 30min to get to the surface! No way to bolt!
Only just seen this amazing thankyou
It was amazing! Still looking for next encounter😂
Large pregnant female. She looked to be in somewhat of an aggressive posture (at least initially), her back was arched and her pectoral fins were pointed down. Your reaction to her likely deescalated the encounter and made for a more positive experience.
Certainly one experience of a lifetime!
Great footage! Such curious non aggressive behavior! 😋👍
thanks. certainly very curious. My shark language skills are limited, so will never know for sure!!
Question for experts:
1. Would you say the pectoral fins are pointing down?
2. Is she pregnant?
Why is rope attached to shark?
difficult to tell. Maybe it was something she got from a cage diving where they attract sharks with tuna heads attached to ropes like this. Or she ate something else attached to the rope. Maybe we should have helped... but it was too much for a first experience! Next time!
anxiety inducing to say the least, unreal footage
they can say not aggresively, but her posture says different.whether that was because she felt threatened,or because of rope , i couldnt say,but mouth agape,& fins pointed down says she wasnt happy.it could be that because the water was murky & felt an animal presence , she was alert for an attack, especially given that she looks pregnant, but that could also mean she had only just fed.the good thing for them is that they kept somebody facing her, because if there had been loss of any sight between them, then that could have been a trigger.to be fair it could also have been a stay away from me sign too,but i doubt she has had many actually approach her . this is why its so hard to read what these signs are meaning at any given time.just like with humans, they probably show similar emotions for various different situations , & probably the best reaction to all of them is to stay calm, because you cant expect anybody facing you , to stay calm,if your not yourself.
yes, very hard to read, especially we had no experience and no clue about big shark behavior (got many updates from marine and sharks specialists AFTER!). Mostly, we were exited because such an encounter is so rare. I believe she would have been stressed because of the rope in her mouth. Wether she was asking for help is a totally different interpretation :-) we didn't really have in mind in these short minutes ...
Striking footage-and more than a little nerve-wracking. Very healthy young female white shark, 15ft. tops but that’s plenty big.
Ta! Great video. Decent music too.
Thank you
Beautiful animal.
I have had encounters with dozens of different sharks including Great Whites, Tigers, Lemons, Makos, Black Tip Reef, Hammerhead, Sand Tigers, Threshers, Blues,
Pelagic White Tips, Bulls, etc. during my 40+ years of diving.

I hate how they come out of now where and vanish like it’s nothing.
But then this is the chance to see one !!
I wonder how long the shark was?
Quite hard to tell under water and due to emotions!! but based on the some markers (the chain/line used to ascent), probably about or little more than 5m.
Looks like he's giving you warning signals as his mouth is open as he swims along
For some people, it is more asking for help so we’d have removed the line for her mouth… Was hard to tell then !!
Yeah that’s one sign, but the pectorals were horizontal and the other body language was relaxed/confident.
Whoa big girl and with a baby on the way. Looks like she came to check out what you guys were doing in her backyard. Cool vid!
Thanks. Yes, clearly she was curious, or maybe wanted some help to remove the line from her mouth. We were a bit unprepared…
That was a very Special moment for those divers, if not a little hairy? What an Awesome experience! ✌️
It was! Experience of a life time!
And yes, very hairy moment 😂
@@SailingIdefix It was a great experience just watching. Thankyou! ✌️
They've always got their mouth open like they're about to tell you a story
The consensus is now: “please could you remove this rope”
Whites always look like they’re smiling too
The markings on this beautiful white shark look like deep blue
Clara Grundy - indeed, she’s pretty marked!
That is a pregnant great white !
Jeezus, I'm nearly hyperventilating just watching this from the safety of my couch!
😂
You're so lucky to see white shark in open water without cages. I hope I get lucky and see a white shark. This shark was a true player! More proof that sharks aren't these mindless killers! Nice vid!
thanks for your comment. Hope you'll see one too!

Thank you!
Any thoughts to using shark shield products w electric field. Haven't dived, but it appears to work in videos I have seen.
Really not. While we certainly felt uncomfortable realizing what we were facing, we also were exited by the experience. And never thought before or after of bringing anything which could hurt sharks.
What we saw however, was she got scared from the underwater scooters coming down.
@@SailingIdefixit doesn't hurt sharks. Maybe you should research it before you put it down. All it does is keep them at a distance
@@YampaYak-vd1xo actually, it doesn't really, as the few deterrent devices which can of work, are only very short distance. Maybe they don't hurt shark, maybe they do, i don't speak shark very well.
How close did she get to you?
Probably less than 1m/3ft at some point. I moved my camera side way to make distance. Which i will always regret as it messed up a great shot 🙈
She wants that rope no longer attached to her.

Crikey this is one huge white..nice video man👏👏
thank you!
Absolutely beautiful
Indeed. Beautiful, unique and awesome. Life experience point!
Thanks for posting this info on SDX, they look like a great charter to take!
Sorry miss your comment. Thanks for the link. It is hard to tell 100% but would be cool if it were indeed!
Catalina Island is known a shark island... it's correct?
No. Never seen a shark after hundreds of dives there.
Well, not sure Catalina is known specifically for that, but there are lots of little sharks around the kelp. Hard to spot because often frightened. Usually super happy to spot a leopard shark of any size while diving, but not frequent. So of course a GW...!
@@SailingIdefix thanks for answer..have nice day
Nice big, healthy, pregnant female white shark.
That was a really big one!
Jury still out for exact size. But not a juvenile😂
I'm a diver in Oz. Would love to join you on such an adventure one day.
I also want to dive in Oz!
has this shark got fishing line attached to it ? What is the line coming form it.
it's not clear what it was.
The coloration and shape of the tail fin makes me think blue mako rather than great white but I could be wrong.
it was a female GWS. Confirmed by many experts!
way too fat to be a mako

Beautiful white
great video but in my estimation it looks closer to 12-15ft
Where did this happen
South west end of Catalina, SoCal, USA. Near the fishing vessel wreck called the “infidel”
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
So amazing
Thank you
If that's legit, that's an amazingly majestic experience!! not sure if I'd have the nerve to keep in motion I think I'd freeze up.
"If that's legit..." what?! Like it's a green screen? Your skepticism is a bit unbalanced.
Beautiful!
😊
I think she was wanting you to pull the long line of floss out of her teeth 😄🦈
Yes, but we got under the poor influence of negative perception on sharks, which is a real shame. Next time I’ll help and report !
In less than ablink of an eye you could lose limb. Shark movements are faster than what humsn eye can perceive.
Of course. But I was told this is now how they attack. Not by getting close like this. They come fast and straight from far away. But didn’t know much then about it. Though the long 20ft stop in open ocean not seeing her was also not very comfortable! But we went back for dive 2 😊
Could be deep blue this was shot three years before she was first seen and Grey whites grow a foot every year so this could definitely be her
It’s not Deep Blue.
If I can find her name I’ll come back and post it.
wow well if that's the case I stand corrected that's a hell of a shark
the last one I saw, she was singing a opera!
She just standing her ground as she is most likely pregnant. Beautiful fish.
pregnant and/or well fed. hard to tell. probably curious too, and stressed out with the rope in her mouth.
Deep Blue?
0:47 yes mission accomplished 👍👊✌️
R0MANEK shark , yes, exactly!
That is not a 18 footer. The sharks girth is not wide enough. It should be approximately 8’ across. The rope and the diver’s fins indicate, clearly, that the shark is in the 14’ to 15’ range.

Why is that rope trailing that shark
Possible explanation (not sure): when they do cage diving, they attach a tuna head to a rope to attract the shark. Maybe something went wrong and she took the entire thing with the rope getting blocked on her tooth. Could be something else, but clearly was bothering her.
