Everyone is sending voice notes!

- Voice notes, which the sender dictates out loud, got prime placement in Apple’s texting app Messages in 2014. Since then, they’ve been added to almost every major social media and messaging platform. Dating app Hinge lets users send voice notes - and those who do are 48 percent more likely to get a date, the company says. On TikTok, people joke that the long, rambling audio clips they send to their friends, partners or parents are “podcasts” based on the plot points of their everyday lives.
To send one, you typically press and hold a microphone icon, speak your mind and send it off. Depending on the app, you can review your note first, listen at a faster or slower speed, or go full circle and read an automated transcript of the note. In Messages, voice notes are ephemeral, disappearing after they’re played, creating a confusing experience for some users.
People who rely on voice notes are convinced they solve a problem. For the burned out, they’re a break from looking at screens. For the busy, they offer the convenience of talking without the commitment of a phone call. And in an email-and-Slack-drenched world where efficiency reigns, meandering voice notes can be a sweet source of intimacy, fans said. Приколы
That Slack notification in the beginning of the video gave me anxiety
I looked up at my computer and really thought I had a notification 😂
I checked my notifications just to be safe. And it's a Sunday!
The really funny thing is I saw an episode of a show where someone send their friend a cassette tape instead of a letter because they hated writing. We’re not the first humans to send our friends mini pod casts!!!!😂😂
I can’t think fast enough to make a concise voice note
I don't use them and I don't like when people send me them. I'd rather use text, obviously, but if the topic is too complicated to efficiently be conveyed that way just call
It’s been like half a decade since they became wildly popular in WhatsApp and other apps, to the point some of them are starting to offer you voice to text to deal with the incomings.
Maybe the US-SMS situation kept it from becoming popular before over there?
I think voice notes are great! They're fun to leave, and I enjoy hearing my loved ones' voices when they leave one for me. Sometimes, if you want to send a little message that would take a paragraph to write out, but it only takes a few moments to speak, a voice note is a great option, especially if you are in a rush.
And with a lot of my loved ones being in different time zones, a voice note is better than calling someone for whom it is the middle of the night

It really is about interupting, if its a friend I'll said a voice note, if its my mom I'll call and ask if she can talk
But there is a third option - text messages.
It's faster to read short messages, then listen to someone yapping slowly, with "ummm" and dead air...
I much prefer text messages.
I use voice notes if I'm explaining something or telling a story, especially if tone is important. if it's conversational, I'd rather text.
Send a text. If I'm in public or busy I don't have time to listen to you talk, and I'm NOT listing to more than 2 minutes of you talking. How am I supposed to respond to everything in a 10 minute voice message?
voice notes interrupt my life more than a call
How? You listen and then respond at your convenience
@@JenIsHungry Exactly ! Please don't call me. I may be a 31 yo adult but don't call me. Leave me a voice note
@@JenIsHungry And you can fast forward them! I wish i could fast forward my counterparty on a phone call
I agree, like, oh my god people who have conversations using 25 voice notes each force me to stop listening to what I was doing, when it could all just be by text where i can easily read through, or an actual phone convo that will go three times as fast
Unless it's really necessary, I hate voice notes, would much rather read 4 paragraphs of text. I've hardly ever used them myself
It was "I'm in your skin... ...take it off... ...I'm crawling around in there."
So about 12 seconds at 3am
I got a friend who always sends these voice messages to group chat. I suppose it's one way to send your voice to a group of people, but I'm not a fan because I can't always listen to group chats when I'm in public. If I'm at the table with others I can read a text quickly but I can't just broadcast my friend's voice for everyone. Plus I know she's only doing it because she's trying to do it while driving. Hang up Brianna!
I cases like the table you can ask if they can send a text via voice note
"Certified yapper"
I'm using that
Voice notes: the evolution of the answering machine.
I think its also important that phone calls these days mean two things: something important or a scam. And it's usually a scam, too. I'll take voice notes or texts instead 😬
Formal phone calls, yes. Sometimes I call them just to chat tho when im bored
Also i don’t like doing voice notes because it’s waaaaay too easy for me to ramble on and on for no reason once i start talking. and I wouldn’t even call myself a yapper.. but it’s like yapping is waaaay easier than forming a text of the same length.
If anyone sends me a voice note that is longer than 15 seconds, I don’t listen to it.
: (
your time is not that valuable buddy
Voice notes are honestly more annoying than long texts. Prove me wrong...
It seems like it is more of a debate on whether calling is more annoying than voice notes
lame
Challenge accepted:
Voice notes are truly the pinnacle of modern communication, offering an unparalleled level of inconvenience and frustration that text messages simply can't match. Imagine you're in a bustling café or a noisy public transport - the ideal scenario for receiving a voice note. You can't just discreetly read it; no, you need to find your headphones, hope they're charged, and then listen to the message amidst the chaos. Oh, the joy of trying to hear every word over the background chatter and clinking coffee cups! And if you're at work or in a quiet environment, playing the note aloud ensures everyone around you can share in your personal conversations. Isn't that just wonderful?
But wait, there's more! Unlike text messages, which you can quickly skim and search through, voice notes demand your undivided attention. There's nothing like the thrill of listening to a three-minute ramble to find that one crucial piece of information. The inefficiency is simply unmatched. With text, you can easily highlight, copy, and respond to specific points. With voice notes, you're left trying to remember key details and then, if you're lucky, piece together a coherent response. It’s a delightful exercise in memory and patience.
Accessibility, of course, is another shining feature of voice notes. For those with hearing impairments or non-native speakers, the challenge of understanding spoken language adds an extra layer of excitement to their day. Why settle for the clarity and ease of written text when you can struggle to decipher an accent or rapid speech, especially when you're busy or in a loud setting?
And let's not forget the interruptive nature of voice notes. There's nothing quite like the moment your phone dings, and you have to drop everything to listen to a message. Unlike a text that you can quickly glance at and respond to later, voice notes demand immediate attention. Perfect for disrupting your workflow or social interactions. It's a brilliant way to ensure you're constantly multitasking and never fully focused on one thing.
Miscommunication is another wonderful benefit of voice notes. The lack of visual cues like punctuation and emojis means interpreting tone and intent becomes a fun guessing game. Sarcasm, humor, and emphasis are harder to convey, leading to endless opportunities for misunderstanding. Text messages are so boringly clear with their written cues and straightforward communication.
Time consumption is yet another perk. A message that could be written in seconds takes much longer to say aloud. This extra time commitment is perfect for those who love inefficiency. And if the sender isn't concise, you get to enjoy every unnecessary filler word and pause. It’s like a mini-podcast you didn’t ask for.
Even transcription services add to the charm of voice notes. When they're available, they often misinterpret words, especially with accents or background noise, leading to hilarious and confusing results. Why rely on the clarity of text when you can enjoy the unpredictable nature of imperfect transcriptions?
In conclusion, voice notes bring a level of inconvenience, inefficiency, and potential for miscommunication that text messages simply can't compete with. For anyone who loves a good challenge and appreciates the art of making communication as complex as possible, voice notes are the clear winner.
You're not though. People can talk way faster than they can type on a phone (150 wpm vs 38 wpm). So a six minute voice note is going to be 900 words. That's a 3 page paper in academia. Moreover, if the person rambles it becomes super easy to lose track of what was said at the start of the voice note.
900 words is 3 pages? What size typeface are you using?! A page of Calibri 12 is at least 500 words, and I use Calibri 10
I just use speech to text to type in everything I want to say, and most of the time the voice notes I make are usually to myself.
I haaaaaate them
Just use text. Way less pauses, way less uhms and ääähs
Or call, then I can at least tell you you lost the point ages ago
I make a point of never listening to any voicemails anyone sends me
My mother sends 40 minute voice notes
I never thought the day “calling people up” would make me feel old school
I try to keep mine under a minute. I can really yap. I left a friend a voice-mail that was 17 minutes long, and it cut out at 10 just fyi.
Voice note senders are psychotic
I seriously had to change my keyboard for my work phone because it ONLY had a voice notes option and no voice-to-text. Because I’m an internet-boomer (millennial)
I hate voice note.
When i am at work and a friend send a voice note. I never know if its workfriendly to listen to it.
Whats wrong with sending a tekst.
Voice notes are annoying, but if you play them and put your phone to your ear they should automatically play through the earpiece speaker like a regular phonecall.
Just call.
Bruh Whatsapp has had voice messaging since forever
"There's been a rise in voice messaging recently."
"But voice messaging has been around for a long time!"
"Not the point of the video, Carl."
@@Antelieris1 you do spit facts
I think it's not an attempt to go back but rather taking the best of both worlds, I don't need to type my complex thoughts and We can hear each other's voices, I never make typos and I don't need to alot a time to talk to somebody, I can have a single conversation over the course of a day
Ah, the young folk have discovered what we called phone tag.
I like that Instagram limits voice note messages to 1 minute
i think voice notes are great for some people, but i personally hate using them. i have an audio processing disorder along with tinnitus, so i cant really hear things without a. someone facing me when talking and being able to see thwir face or b. subtitles. i also read alot faster than people talk and its easier for me to understand them. but voice notes really work for some people! and that great. they just arent for me, and my friends know not to send voice notes to me.
I sent a voice note to me sister of me getting ready in the morning because on april fools we hide “hints” for like, prizes. It’s mostly gift cards are food but it’s still fun.
I might be old but i prefer writing notes over voice notes, not because i dont like my voice, but i feel that i remember the note more if i write them down then say it
My mom uses voice notes alot with her family in Africa
And i can see its usefulness, heck i even use it occasionally with people i hold dear (mainly bc i have a hard time talking which makes it harder for people to understand what in saying)
Most of the world is all about voice notes , where there is WhatsApp there is voice notes galore and 10 minutes
We stopped calling to avoid interrupting people, and then we started getting mad that people don't text back fast enough. *sigh*
Nah, if my friends send me one I straight up say to long didn’t listen please text 😂
I need to do this!
Europe been on this forever
And I hate it
My friends and I use voice notes to talk about books. It's fun when people get to exciting or emotional parts of books and can just rant or whatever to our whole group and then we can all listen at our convenience
I like that voice notes have a transcript now. Unfortunately the transcript isn’t great but it’s better than nothing when someone hits you with that voice note and you aren’t able to listen to it right away (or just don’t wanna listen lol). Can just skim through the transcript to get their point
I've legit never sent a voice note 😅most of my family is older so they perfer calling and only leave voice notes on like WhatsApp to other people I guess. I honesty perfer texting or calling but what works for some doesnt mean it works for all.
Isn't it called a voice/audio message? Who tf calls it a voice note?
I never knew they existed. Not happening here.
Nah I have a friend who sends me 30min voice notes I hate it Soo much
i like voice notes bc i have calling anxiety bc i cant redo or have time to think about my response and i think its the best of both worlds!
43 minutes worth of voice notes
I’ve been using voice notes to send samples of songs with one of my friends to help him write. For everyone else, I use them when I want to be real and intimate about something.
my favorite way to send voice notes isn't to send an actual message, i just read back screenshots of messages my friend gets where people are less than nice to her in a silly voice so she feels better and gets a sense of how ridiculous the person being cruel to her actually sounds
i like receiving and giving voice notes because i can put more emotion into the words and it always felt more personal to me between friends because you can hear when they laugh really hard
voice messages are amazing somethings are just better explained with spoken words but there is no reason to call for a 10 second explanation. on the other hand if it takes more than a minute just call, i dont need your improv audio book.
I have no idea what these are, but it sounds like whenever nobody wanted to pick up the phone and just listened to the answering machine. Or, nowadays, everyone opts into letting it ring to voicemail.
I send them for work. If I have to tell a coworker something quickly in between back to back meetings I’ll send an audio message. If I stepped away from my computer and need to respond I’ll send an audio message.
I don't even listen to my voicemails.
I keep voice notes under a minute, but I send multiple ones back to back. Some of my friends live rurally, and longer chats are hard for them to get.
The longest chain I've done is probably 10 min long
I don't particularly like receiving voice notes; especially long ones as they are especially cumbersome to respond to. Given that the average person speaks at around 110 - 150 words per minute, a 6 minute voice note could have upwards of 900 words or the equivalent of a 3 page paper double spaced.
Like how do you have an effective back and forth with that?
Me and my friends do this all the time, just send a voice note back.
@@euguinn9524 if someone is sending me a 6 minute voice note, I'm just going to call them. It's just way more efficient to communicate that way.
@@andrew2677 not as fun, also it’s a good way to get a point across or tell a story without interruptions
@@euguinn9524 "Not as fun"
That is such a bizarre take.
@@andrew2677 ok Andrew, when we talk over text we lose certain aspects of language that can only be vocalized. When you can hear the emotion and individual quirks in a persons words, it more engaging and fun to listen to than just reading dry text.
My friends and I like these for our hyperfixation rants (the brain is too excited for typing. Fools.) and our emotional breakdowns (the brain is too sad for typing. Fools.)
I love Voice Notes!!!
i was thinking about this exact point a few days ago, its very interesting how they've silently become a very used communication method. ive sent like 20 minute voice notes before, ive got too much to say at all time lol
Voice notes kinda annoy me.
The voice note has always been a thing for non-american WhatsApp users😂
So true 😆
Good grief no! I couldn’t send a voice note! I’m gen x … don’t know if that helps!
They are the WORST! it's like a voice mail pretending to be a text. I'd rather have the VM
45 minutes.
I'm not afraid of calling people I just text them "hey can I call you right now"
It's kind of like how you pull up to somebody's house and you text them "hey I'm here let me in" rather than ringing their doorbell.
Obviously I use speech to text in order to type/say out this comment.
I love voicenotes. Plus now that you get the transcript I can read them if I can't listen
That's just someone putting the burden of voice to text back on you.
@@deathbird909 what?
@@codenameajax7943If you use voice-to-text software to write a text, you know what you're trying to say and can glance at the output to see if it's right and make quick edits.
If you use voice-to-text software to transcribe someone else's message, you have to just trust it's right, or actually listen to the message if you think it's not, which defeats the point.
So sending someone a voice message that they're just going to have to try to auto-transcribe makes more space for error and requires more work from them than just texting them, even if the text is written with voice-to-text. And it shifts that work from the sender to the receiver.
I know about the future, but I've never used it. I do use voice to text, all the time though
32 minutes is crazy for me 😭 , looking back idk wtf I was yapping bout
Ppl in Asian has been leaving voice notes in apps like WeChat and Line for ages now.
I once got dumped by a guy through an 18 minute voice note.
I like getting sent voice notes or voicemails because I can replay them over and over
Voice notes is like playing answering machine tag.
Nah I’ve never been scared to interrupt another person life with a 2 second call
Calls are rarely short in my experience. But I'm from the Midwest and no one can say goodbye once here.
If it's two seconds, then calling them was useless in the first place.
My step brother doesn't really like writing, so he uses that and voice to text.
No I hate it
Everytime I think of voice message I just think of the exspance and everyone face timing in parts because distances make live communication impossible.
I used them years ago after I had a surgery that made me more typo prone for a bit, so voice notes made it easier on me as I was getting really upset that I couldn't type like before and was frankly getting concerned I was going to be more typo prone permanently so the voice notes distracted me (and thankfully it was all temporary). I don't see this change as that big of a deal, maybe as a result of my experience.
Sorry, what's the difference between voice notes and voice mail?
@cheapchipsable If we're talking literally then voicemails are when you attempt a phone call while a voice note is sent instead of a text message (weather that's through a sms or Facebook or whatever). For example on Facebook under the option menu it says "record voice" so you can send a recording of your voice instead of text. more philosophicaly I think a voice mail normally implies a missed phone call therefore is a request for a call back. But a voice note (which is just a narated text message) can be responded to like a normal text message. And specifically in your own time.
To leave a voice mail, you usually have to call and wait through a ringtone
Voice notes can be much longer than an answering machine will allow.
I mainly use voice notes when im walking around while texting
This may be a boomer opinion, but I don't call people due to the guilt that I may be interrupting them, and they are too polite to stop me talking. And I avoid sending texts for the same reason. I wish I could communicate using handwritten letters sent via the postal service aka snail mail, as it allows a person to read then reread a message, and take time to respond. Satisfying to receive a letter in the mailbox too. Not so much satisfaction to get pinged by a notification of a text or voice message.
You can't no one stopping you
I sent one about a minute long to a friend
i won't hear voice note 😒
The only reason I use voice text at all is because it stops those who refuse to get on board with the "calls are only for important things" mindset I have from calling me every time I text them. It's a good compromise, and now no one is being interrupted from what they are doing for a quick ten second question. That said, if it's longer than a minute, I call anyways. There's no reason voice texts need to be that long, might as well call since you're gonna be interrupting them anyways.
Constantly use voice notes I think my longest is about 5 minutes but they average 2 minutes
You know... I'd argue that Leprechauns are actually the first mathematicians. I mean how else would they figure out how far the end of the rainbow is?
I have cut people out for sending voice notes in place of texts. If I’m on the metro, or in a bar, or at work, it’s literally so inconveniencing.
40 minutes, I was explaining the plot analysis of a book I needed to write a really detailed essay on to my friend as I wrote the outline and first draft for the essay
I’ve only ever used it by accident, which is more frequent than I’d prefer. I wish there was a way of turning off that function.
I won’t set a two minute one because I did not feel like writing that all out and also it was a noise which is hard to explain graphically
I think the only time i ever sent a voice note was to explain to a fellow classmate something in chemistry. It was like 2-3 minutes
When i lived in Germany I feel like this was predominantly the way my friends communicated over texting and that was 7 years ago. Feel like we're a bit late on this
I do voice notes, but there is a rule,
I never send a voice note more the 30 seconds and i never hear a voice note more the 60
Three changes led to the domination of texting over calling (not call anxiety, that came later):
1) Texting went from pay-per-use to free.
2) Every phone got a full keyboard.
3) Text messaging software started coming with a full range of emojis.
Once you break down financial, physical, and social barriers to texting, it's obviously far more efficient than voice for quick communications. Being written, it's already more private and quicker to process at a glance.
Voice notes by comparison are terrible. They're a little more emotive, but the emotion isn't conversational, it's one-sided. It's voicemail without waiting for the voicemail prompt, and no one leaves voicemail, they just text when you don't answer.
i dont use voice messages cause how tf my friends gonna hear what im saying anywhere but in private?
i started using them when i didnt have the mental control to text
I used to do it and enjoy it but the social norms changed me to text and only call when it's important
Longest o received was 10 minutes.
one time i accidentally recorded an entire 15 minute long conversation and sent it to my parents because i pressed the voice message button and put my phone back into my pocket
I sent a 7 or 8 minute one once
