  • Hades or Heavy?
    I was considering switching to JSB Hades from #JSB Heavy's some time ago and last week, I managed to get my hands on some Hades. This video shows the tests I did to compare the #Hades and the Heavy's - which made up my mind.
    These new pellets from JSB are superb. They hit really hard, dump a load of energy and are as accurate as the JSB Heavy's - in my rifle anyway! :)
    I test these against fruit, wood, metal, ballistic gel and water; and they're absolutely brilliant.
    This is a 43-minute video - probably one of the longer one's I've done but I've covered a lot in it.
    I'd like to say a huge thank you to my sponsors OnTarget.

    I too must be a sad little geek, because I just watched the entire video at 0400 hours with my morning coffee and it held my interest the whole way through.
    Terminal ballistics is basically "Fluid Dynamics," how well or how poorly an object moves through a fluid. If it moves well (has minimal resistance), then there is very little disruption to the surrounding fluid (tissue) and the object will go farther in that fluid with a given amount of energy and leave a path (wound) no larger than the diameter of that object. If it moves poorly through a fluid (has greater resistance) then it will not travel as far in the fluid AND will leave a path (wound) greater than the object's diameter. You proved this in your gel test, the Heavy has "good flow" characteristics and penetrated much deeper in the gel and left a very narrow wound. The Hades, because of its triangular shaped hollows in the head, has "poor flow" characteristics and as a result did not penetrate as far, BUT left a much larger wound.
    Fluid dynamics ALSO applies to air (especially as velocities go up). If it flows well through the air, then it's path will be more consistent and less affected by variables in the air (more accurate). If it doesn't flow well, then it will be MORE affected by variables in the air (wind, humidity etc) and be less accurate. You can test this while driving in your car. If you hold your hand flat out of the window, it will have "good" flow characteristics and be less affected by the wind. If you hold your hand out, palm forward, it will have "bad" flow characteristics and be greatly affected by the wind. Exactly like a pointed or flat pellet travelling through the air to the target.
    Sorry, went "Full Geek" there for a minute.

      @arpc  4 года назад +2

      That was a very interesting read! You went Full Geek but it was interesting! Especially as you can see how it applies to the pellets in these tests.

    The Hades are very good at 30 yards or less. Kills quarry in a instant! I then shot them at 50 yards with my BSA Scorpion and weren’t the best. Even a tiny bit of wind takes them off target. So for longer ranges I would opt for the Jsb Heavy’s, accuracy is more important than damage!

    • @arpc
      @arpc  4 года назад +3

      Absolutely agree about the accuracy!! The Heavy's do the job and kill well so if I find the Hades aren't doing what I want with love quarry, I'll switch back in an instant.

      I have taken small game at over twice that distance with both pellets, (16.5fpe break barrel gun). Even to 80 yards on targets, there is virtually no difference between the Hades and the same weight/geometry JSB Diabolo 10.34gr heavy pellet. I sight my gun in at 35 yards. I have had no their pellets that stay on it's path to 80 yards and can hit 75mm targets with both pellets at that distance. I find them to be the most wind resistant, which is consistent with physics. I find no measurable difference in their long range capability, (including zero or very little scope adjustment between the 2 pellets), so I am picking the Hades.

      Do you find them making more mess? I mean, when I used H&N in Hunter Extremes, they left a blood bath behind. The head on them seemed to drill in it not the quarry.

      @@arpc I used them the other night on the rats and there seems to be more leakage from the head shots. I am not sure if it's because they are more accurate and therefore better strikes to the head or because they are causing more damage. Either way these pellets are friggin' awesome and I have just got two more 500 round tins. I don't want to run out.

    I haven't read through all of the comments, so this might save been mentioned, if so, I apologise. . .Has this comparison been made at 50 metres, using a chrono velocity test? My assumption is that the Hades would not be as aerodynamic as the domed pellet and I would like to see figures comparing the two. The penetration tests, to my mind didn't prove a lot.

      USA here, $120.00 Benjamin break barrel 16.5fpe scoped rifle. No accuracy issues here, hitting 3" targets (75mm), at 80 yards, (I sight my gun in at 35 yards). Almost no difference in flight compared to the same size heavy JSB pellet. If I have to adjust my scope between the 2 pellets, it is only a click or two. I have no interest in any other pellet. These pellets are accurate and will take small game to at least 70 yards if you shoot your gun well. But with only 12fpe, you might as well be shooting marbles from a sling shot. I would not want any less power than 16fpe for these most excellent pellets, but they should still fly straighter, (other than normal pellet drop), than most anything else at distance. Even to 80 yards, I have never had one fly sideways.

    As a big fan of the heavies I'd say disappointing deformation of both tbh.
    I know the heavies are a far more effective for hunting than regular 8.4 gr Jsb exacts.
    The best pellets I've ever tried for deformation/damage are Rws super h points,a big pity they are one of the most innacurate 'decent make' pellets I've tried.
    I'd say the worst for deformation are Crosman accupels/premiers,they seem to drill through almost anything due to their harder mix of lead/antimony.

      I was a fan of the 8.4gr AADF but I found the heavies were just as accurate and made a bigger mess of the quarry whilst working with the ballistic calculator.
      At the end of the day, it is the accuracy that kills rather than the the calibre or defamation. I prefer headshots, and they kill regardless.

    Hades 15.89/.22 works well in the HW44, HW98, and Dianawerks M-34 Oldie. 50-80 yards a quatering crosswind will give you some drift. Terminators in .22 by H &N are really good too. Both knock shards of metal off tin cans at 40 yards. You can see the shrapnel in the scope. I tried those .177 JSB heavyweight in the HW97K, and at short distance you can use them as a thumper. They drop off a bit
    at distance. I would use them in a PCP .177 gun if I had one.

      Thanks for this. Most of my shots are close (ish) range and the Hades seem to slam hard at these ranges, in .177.

Sometimes I zero'd my HW98 in .22cal JSB 18.13gr @ 40 yards, and then when a rabbit is 15 yards, I holdunder one, and use the 25gr JSB Monster from a break-barrel. Works well. This must have taken you ages to sort out, especially the superb pallet target stand. Unfortunate that the wind decided to f*** things up a bit. Nice video, you put some time into this, and thanks for sharing...
    I personally have hunted, and did much pesting with the 1.77 JSB Heavies 10.34g and worked beautifully at very long ranges, as they were so darn accurate! Many jackrabbits have fallen to this specific pellet, as well as ground squirrels, cotton tail rabbits, rats etc...
    Believe me I have tried so many pellets to find the very best.
    The Hades seem good but for short distances. But then again, a lot of variables here, type of gun, power it's shooting at etc, etc.
    Lots of styles of amo out there but I obviously I just use what my guns love, and we're talking, only 4-5 types, two of them being extremely accurate even out to 80-100yards!
    Boy seems that wind is blowing hard around you!

    BRILLIANT video mate , enjoyed it a lot , I also tested the Hades ( .177 ) early last week , and came too the very same conclusion , that they are very susceptible to the wind , I voiced my concerns on airgun sniper elite channel , run by Mark Holding , im glad you have come too the same conclusions , including ( as I mentioned on other channel ) the fact there ALWAYS seems to be the mandatory flier .. .. this I can probably conclude , is also due to the eliments .. and I thought I was a crap shot ( I probably am too be fair ) ... super vid ...

    Great video. I found that they cause more damage and do expand like you said. My grouping is like your first grouping though. 1 in 5 pellets will be a flyer an inch or so away from the aim point and the group isn't as good as the heavies. I have looked around and the BC for the Hades is 0.0265 so you can input it in the scope. Although I like you have an ATN 4k and found up to 20 yards I could just use the heavy pellet profile with no issues up to that distance. Be interesting to see how you get on at longer ranges.

      I've started using Hades in .22 and I've found them to be more accurate and stable than the closest match to Heavies for .22. Again, I've only used them in out to about 30 yards at the moment.
      To be honest, I think anything beyond maybe 30 yards I'd use the AADF's as they're heavy enough and are a nice Diabolo pellet (also cast by JSB).

    I'm just getting into air-guns. I was told that when shooting small game a ''heavy'' dome-shaped pellet that is accurate in your rifle, is the one that will penetrate the skull best, ensuring a kill. On small game and pests, there just isn't enough acceleration or mass on body shots to cause much deformation. Accuracy and confidence in the pellet you choose is probably what counts most, though!

      Air Rifle Pest Control. I got the 50 test pellets in and over all they shot great, I got single hole groups at 25 and 35 meters, although i did get 5 clear fliers which were 5-6 mm outside of my groups. This may have been damaged pellets as i didn’t take time to sort them. I’ve ordered a 500 tin so the testing goes on, i’ll push them to 40m & 50m next time.👍🏼🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      I suspect the difference between 4.52 and 4.50 is probably sufficient to randomly upset the alignment of the pellet in the rifle bore, which would explain the occasional flyer and a slightly less tight grouping than pellets with closer-fitting heads such as 4.52 mm. This variation will show up more at greater ranges which probably accounts for users’s reported experiences.

    Did you say the Hades were punching clear through the wood backstop while the JSB domed pellets did not and they are the same weight? You would expect the Hades to open up and have less penetration through the wood and the domes stay intact allowing more penetration. Perhaps the Hades fit the barrel better and obtaining a higher velocity ??

    • @arpc
      @arpc  4 года назад

      The velocity was very close to standard dome Diabolo's - I was wondering if the head design gave them an advantage. It wasn't what I was expecting. Either that, or they were flattening quicker and creating more shock as a result on impact.

    hi , i do a lot of hunting but in .22 cal,i have tried the hades at the same weight as the standard jsb 15.89 and there is a slight bit of difference on impact but not much,i do find they are not quite so accurate as the standard diabolo from 30 to 40yards which i shoot most of my quarry,saying that close up work on rats are a bit more devastating,i know you are testing the .177 version but thought i would give you an idea of performance in the .22 cal,cheers,,stay safe,👍

      Thanks Kim This is exactly what I'm looking for - other peoples thoughts and views on these pellets. Regardless of caliber. I think they'll perform roughly the same (in scale) between calibers. Nearly all my shooting is ratting but I also go after feral pigeons and squirrels. I imagine these will be pretty devastating on these. I'll not go for rabbits with these until I've proven them at longer distances as I have with the Heavies.
      I head shot a rat at 45 yards and the Heavy flew straight and smashed it's target. They're awesome pellets.

    I’m going to sum this up for you. I can categorically tell you that it is a waste of time using any specialist hunting pellets in a sub 12 air gun. The guns simply don’t have the power to make the pellets deform properly on impact.
    All your doing is sacrificing accuracy. A normal Diablo will always be the best and most accurate choice.
    However when you start using expanding pellets in fac rated Airguns they come into their own. At 30-40 foot pounds. All the hollow point pellets completely deform and cause major added damage and shock upon impact.

      I dont like to diss peoples videos and you have clearly gone to some effort .
      But .shooting into tin cans .
      And pellet tins is totally pointless it tells you nothing .the apple test was about the most informative .
      The hades showed virtually no deformation even at the short ranges you used into gell .
      They penetrated far too much for an expanding pellet .i dont know how you got the the conclusion that the hades hit with more energy .?
      Please try again .using substrates that represent flesh at further hunting ranges. Cheers

    • @TheGameCamer360
      @TheGameCamer360 4 года назад +1

      Heathy Copie the point of these pellets is deformation on impact. Creating great shock and a large wound channel. They don’t do this in sub 12 guns. If you use one of these hades pellets in a 25-30 ftpd gun it completely flattens upon impacting something, and therefore creates the deformation they are designed for.
      If you want to watch a proper and far more scientific review, watch AAR on air, he tests all the major hunting pellets. In both .177 and .22 and in both sub 12 and Fac guns.
      In every single case the pellets did not deform or outperform a normal Diablo in sub 12.
      And let’s face it, sub 12 guns have more than enough power to pass through a suitable quarries head at the appropriate ranges, with normal pellets. How much more damage do you want.

      @@rufusduck71 eh? did you watch the same video? this was about the impact and the energy dump so that is exactly what the video showed. The fact the wood was smashed, the apple shocked, the gel wound channels were wider... it is all about the energy dump. Try watching it again maybe instead of dissing hard work and a good video that was showing something you misunderstood was the point of the video.

    • @arpc
      @arpc  4 года назад

      The gel is quite dense and it flexes easily. The backstop board is rigid and all that energy is smashing into a 4.5mm circle.
      I imagine that spinning pellets energy is breaking the brittle wood whereas the gel is hugging, flexing and creating more resistance over a greater distance, slowing the pellet down.
      Ballistic Gels used to view bullets work in the same way. A bullet will pass through steel but will be grabbed by the Ballistic Gel.
