      @Johannes Brahms Getting back your childhood games is something I should've mentioned because I too did that at first. lol
      I did know that! I was actually working on a video about the Sega Power Base Converter a few years ago but never finished it because I lost some footage. In my opinion Master System games play better on the Genesis as the controller is better and you can get cleaner video output on the Genesis. :)

    • @NoaLee
      @NoaLee  3 года назад

      @Johannes Brahms Almost entirely because of the control scheme--not just the motion controls, but all the controller options that are available. I feel like the best games on the system don't utilize motion controls well, and those that avoid motion controls play like crap because the developers were forced to adapt to odd control schemes because of the design. That, and I just don't think it has a very good library of games overall. But hey, at least it's better than the Wii-U. lol

      I have 4 controllers and some games but i dont have a video plug.
      My main reason on getting retro consoles was because of curiosity or that i just want it.

    Anyway, this video comes in a right time for me. I was thinking in collecting stuff I like (mostly figure and plushies) but I also want to rebuy games I used to play when I was kid (GB, GBA and GC mostly). A tiny problem is that I'm quite excited to buy these on CIB so I'm ready to spent a lot of money on eBay...yay

    Ive had a switch for a while and recently got into playing the old pokemon games and once I get a job I plan on collecting gbc/gba games and later on getting a game cube. As you can tell, I plan on starting a nintendo collection. I buy most of my switch games physical because I think now more than ever it’s important to preserve games as it seems the companies themselves dont care to

    I think for me, I'm a younger gamer, 21yo, and I would really love to play on some older consoles and older games that I am too young to have gotten to play when I was a kid. My collection will be all for me, and I want to collect games I will actually play, and not just collect random stuff for the sake of having it. For example, I REALLY want to get a ps1 and play the original Tomb Raider games! Although, I will say that I am a massive fan of Zelda and Pokemon, and I am REALLY tempted to hunt down and buy every special edition themed console they've ever made lol. They're all so amazing. I already have the TOTK OLED switch, so now I kind of HAVE to collect them all, right? ;)

    Don't worry, there will always be someone out there that will spend good money on retro games, especially the older and rarer they get. There are collectors that even buy refurbished and relabeled games. I didn't think I would ever spend $100 on a copy of Sunset Riders (SNES) but I did. I want to start collecting for SNES. Atari 2600 and NES games don’t always look that great, and while it’s not all about graphical power, I still like a well defined art style that looks good. Mainly 16 bit systems. There are tons of great looking games on genesis and SNES with amazing gameplay

    • @NoaLee
      @NoaLee  3 года назад +1

      There are certainly a few games on NES that have a strong 8-bit aesthetic that still hold up today like Kirby's Adventure and Mega Man 6, but finding ones on the 2600 is pretty challenging. In terms of purchasing hard copy games vs online games what is your advice? We're not strictly talking retro games, just in general

    • @NoaLee
      @NoaLee  3 года назад +1

      Mostly I think it's a matter of preference: do you prefer physical copies and the "ritual" of pulling a game off the shelf and slapping it into a console? Or do you prefer the convenience of digital games always being a few clicks or button presses away? Then there's the question of price, as digital versions of games usually drop in price quicker and go on sale more often. Physical games on the other hand are better from a preservation standpoint as a game that exists in a physical capacity will always be available in some fashion, while digital games can (and quite frequently do) disappear from digital store fronts and can literally become impossible to acquire without pirating the game or buying a piece of hardware that has the game already installed.
      Personally, I do both: I prefer to have a physical copy but in some cases where the physical copy is hard to come by, like with Limited Run Games, or is a game that I don't actually intend on playing all that much but need to capture footage for or something I'll go for the digital. Hope that helps! :D

    • @pranavrao6370
      @pranavrao6370 3 года назад

      @@NoaLeeIt does! Thanks! Although does what you said about online games disappearing apply to Emulators or software like Steam or both? Cause I plan to use both. The reason I wanna game online on whatever platform possible is cause it's less expensive and takes up less space than a console. Also, as you said, they're more readily available to play than having to hook up the gaming console or purchase he game if I don't own it. I really want to get into gaming. I've been doing it for years but not very broadly -- only Banjo-Kazooie and Mario along with a few others here and there. My experience has been quite limited in all honesty. There are several titles I'm interested in, but the problem is I do not know how to acquire the tools (e.g. Emulators, Consoles, Emulator controller) needed to experience the titles I want to.

    • @NoaLee
      @NoaLee  3 года назад +1

      @@pranavrao6370 It's mostly just digital store fronts like Steam, Nintendo eShop, PSN, Xbox Live, etc. Because emulation (or more specifically the roms you use in emulation) is technically piracy there usually isn't an issue with games disappearing permanently as pirated copies will always remain no matter what. They may disappear from specific websites, but not the internet entirely. As for using roms and emulators instead of tracking down a "legit" (i.e. legal) copy it all comes down to your own personal set of ethics. Are you okay with piracy? If you were the developer of a game would you want people playing your game in this manner? Is there a reasonably priced, not too inconvenient way to play the game? My philosophy has always been get it legit unless I physically or monetarily can't - for example, games that were only ever released on one platform and cost hundreds of dollars; that, in my opinion, is grounds for emulating the game. At that point I think it becomes a matter of game preservation rather than piracy as there's no legal way to play the game without paying a ludicrous amount of money. Or another example would be a game like the original Dune game on DOS where it usually only goes for $90 (expensive but not unreasonable due to it's rarity) but I physically can't find a copy to buy anywhere, so in that case I emulated it. However, if a physical copy of the game exists and is super expensive but there exists a legal digital version of the game that is being sold at a fair price, then I think pirating the game through emulation would be wrong. When it comes to emulators just search for the console you want followed by the word "emulator" and you should find any emulator you'll ever need with tons of recommendations, tutorials, etc. As for roms, I can't give you any recommendations due to the legality of using using, so you're on your own on that one. :D Remember, emulators are legal, roms probably aren't, though there may be practical and ethical grounds for using certain roms. If you can get it cheaply and easily, there's no excuse for pirating it. Cheers!

Yoshi's Story is pretty cheap and it's a nice little platformer that people often overlook and BattleTanx is a fun multiplayer tank game. Also try Hercules: The Legendary Journeys: it's a pretty awful Ocarina of Time ripoff, but it's cheap and I think it qualifies as so bad it's good. Getting a collection to emulate is a pretty good idea if you just care about playing them. I know emulating is a grey area. But for me, I only pirate games for some that I can't get on modern consoles with a reasonable service. So I emulate JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Alien vs predator. But I buy metal slug and any neo geo game on the switch. Because that is the only way the people who own the game can earn profits. I also pirate Super Mario World and any game that's on the switch online store, cause screw supporting that BS.
    If only they would give the option to buy the games individually. Or better yet, sell the roms themselves. Sega does this and they're better for it. Buy any game on the sega genesis collection on pc let's you extract the rom and use a better emulator
    But this is my opinion. You can disagree with me if you want. This opinion is in a very grey area

    • @NoaLee
      @NoaLee  3 года назад +2

      I'm definitely with you. I used to be pretty anti-emulator, but when you can't count on companies to re-release their games in an ethical way, sometimes emulation is the only option that makes sense. Lately for me it's more so been a case I literally can't buy the games I'm interested in and have no choice but to emulate them. I had this happen last summer when I wanted to play the original Dune game on DOS and couldn't even find a copy to buy, so hello DOSBox! lol

    My first tip would be: Stop collecting for collecting. Quality over quantity. A lot of collectors are doing it for decades. As a beginner you can not and should not compete. Just buy one console and a 2 or 3 games you want to play. When you're done, buy one more. Yes, your collection is not that impressive but a stack of games you don't play just to impress some online trolls isn't either. I have a collection of around 1500 games but I got lucky when I started. In the beginning of the century retro games were worthless. My first Genesis was thrown away in the trash. And it was in good condition. It was my own personal mission to rescue retro games from getting demolished. So my first couple of 500 games were free. When the retro hype started, everyone was impressed and thought I spend a lot of money. The only consoles I bought were a Saturn and a Dreamcast. As a Sega geek I just wanted to own those two. But they were the last ones on the list. Nowadays I just buy just a couple of games a month. I will say it: Retro games are just too expensive and the value will drop in a couple of years. So just buy what you want to play right now. And think about it: all the retro consoles were ones the hottest new thing. For some people PS1 is already retro. So if you buy cheap last gen games, in about 2 decades, those will be retro.

      @@NoaLee Such a humble personality :P I do have another question just out of sheer curiosity: You mentioned collecting retro games was not financially lucrative but shouldn't these items increase in value over time since they aren't produced any more?

    • @NoaLee
      @NoaLee  5 лет назад

      @Pawn Sacrifice Not necessarily; it all depends on the demand. There are plenty of things that are old and no longer being produced that people just don't want anymore so they end up in this weird place where they're "rare" but "cheap."
      A Good example of this would be antique radios; sure there are still a few people out there who are enthusiasts but most of the time people just want to get rid of them so they sit around collecting dust and sell for pretty cheap when they do final go.
      With retro games the problem is that people are losing interest year over year and the value for most retro games has taken a dive because of it--good for collector's like me, but bad for investors. :) Ten years ago when retro gaming became the hot "new" thing prices skyrocketed as people flooded into the hobby, but now that the hype has died down, and people aren't buying retro as much as they used to, collectors are starting to find that the overall value of their collection is starting to dwindle.
      This combined with the fact that there's just A LOT more games out there than we once realized. Earthbound shipped ~150,000 copies in the US which was about average for the SNES but it's a sought after game so it sells for a lot. But even Earthbound's losing it's value; ten years ago you couldn't find a copy of the game selling for under $200 but now I regularly see them for around $100. Similarly, I paid $80 for a copy of Final Fantasy VII years ago but now it only sells for $30ish.
      Now this doesn't mean that EVERY retro game is going to lose its value; some are always going to increase in value but these are going to be the ones that are truly rare like Star Fox Super Weekend, Nintendo Wold Championship, and yes, even unopened copies of Super Mario Bros. So unless that's what you're investing in, you're probably going to end up losing money in the long run.
      I've got plans to make a video covering this very topic in the near future, so I'll have a lot more info in that! Good question bud! :D

      @@NoaLee Thank you for your in depth explanation for why retro games (mostly) aren't such lucrative investments despite their sparsity. I was considering buying some in the far future because a friend and I are toying with the idea to open a toy shop as a side project, purchasing sets (e.g. Lego or whatever comes to mind and is worth it) and reselling them years later when the nostalgia/collector drive kicks in. So, I'll dismiss my stroke of genius then :D

      @Pawn Yeah dude, happy to help! I wouldn't necessarily dismiss your stroke of genius (mostly because a toy shop sounds fun as hell) because there's still SOME money to be made on retro games, but you'd have to move a lot of them to make it worth it. I imagine that's why every retro store I've ever been to also sold dvds, blu-rays, and vinyl records, as well as new games. It can be done, it's just difficult. lol
