I don't enjoy collecting for the sake of collecting, it's because these are games that I genuinely want to play and experience, that's why I don't feel the need to have a huge collection. Although, there is a sense of ecstasy in opening a parcel delivered to you and adding games alphabetically to your shelf.
You are right that's what it should be about , I don't understand the whole collecting for the sake of collecting that's a tad silly it should be about collecting games that you actually play..
really good tips, especially the last one, I have no interest in having a complete set of anything, I just buy games based on what I want to actually play, and you're right, going through those games once they arrive does give you more of a drive to see what else is out there rather than just buying everything to show off how good you are at spending money
That is so true. You don't need to have every piece to be a collector. Just collect what you want. An old friend of mine didn't collect comics until the super hero movies started popping out. He only collects the graphic novels and stories of interest to him. Nothing wrong with that. I spent 74 dollars on Suikoden 2, only the disc. I had it before but stupidly traded it. I bought a custom case and reprint of the manual. I don't plan on selling my collection. I bought them to have fun.
I am a kind of slow collector. I have been at it for about a year now. I collect just about everything, I like it and it is fun for me. I play most of them at least once. I hope that I will have a large collection one day, then when I die "I" can donate it to a foundation that does video game presentation. Don't think they want anything I have now, but I have only been at it for a year. Great video.
Great tip about having a collection goal. I try to stick to mostly collecting Japanese developed games on playstation and nintendo consoles as having a limit on what i collect really helps not just with money but also space.
I don't have a collection, per say, just a library of the ones I love. But I have tried to fill in some notable gaps over the last year and your absolutely right, has to be a case of opportunity not demand. Nice advice, much appreciated
About 10 years ago I thought it might be cool to break some sort of record, but nah, can't be arsed xD Collecting what you love is definitely a better strategy.
Great tips! I've often received offers from eBay sellers for items I'm watching too. I don't see PS1 games in charity shops very often but I got lucky and picked up Dino Crisis for £1 once. My local stores are usually full of unwanted FIFA games.
I started collecting hardcore in the last year. And I'm happy with my collection so far. Got a lot of bangers and valuable games. I started originally when I was around 21 and stopped, I'm 29 now and starting from scratch. And what I've noticed is that in those 8 years the value of these consoles/games/accessories has risen crazy amounts since. I'm a PS1 guy as well, I bought the white mini PS1 at a pawn shop for $25 US at the time... and Metal Gear black label for $10. Went to my favorite Retro gaming store a couple of days ago and now they go for at least $75. And I just bought MGS black label again for $50 🤦🏻♂️ The prices will just keep rising at this point.. This was a very informative video with good tips. Keep it up brotha 🤙🏻💯
Yes, prices going mental at the minute, not really been bothered about buying much. Would like to complete the mag collection I think then see what happens after that. Cheers for watching!
This is a really informative and helpful video. Watching this reminds me of the patience aspect and thrill of finding cheap games. Helpful for me as I am getting into collecting PlayStation1 games recently. Thanks for this interesting video.
Some top tips, before lockdown 90% of my pick ups are from charity shops or boots, thing with bootsales, you have to get there as the cars are rolling in, might not find the retro all the time but can find lots of common games to sell or trade to get the older stuff, hopefully soon we can get back out to the chazza shops and boots, I miss the trill of the hunt, not knowing what will turn will turn up. 👍🎮
Very good advice. People today praise people with no ability to exhibit patience, and that don't mind spending copious amounts of money on games. I never see people say.. "Wait a minute, you completed the entire SNES library in 6 months.. Wow, I bet you paid a buttload of money." I've spent over 20 years on some of my collections, and that is why today, I have more than probably anyone in the world, besides maybe Last Gamer, at 39 complete libraries. However, I do so for a reason, as I own the Console Purist Museum, and it is open to the public.
Definitely worth a try! I have found a lot of sellers don't really accept any offers unless it's like 50p lower than their ask xD but others may have better luck.
Nice video. I only started collecting a few months ago, and it's going slowly. I appreciate these tips. I think I was trying to go too fast building my collection and will just relax and slow it down a bit. I collect all Xbox
A little late to this video but I've definitely adopted some of these suggestions. I've recently started to collect games (from ps1 to ps3) I watch items on ebay and wait for the offers to come through. I also hold out on buying new games on release, I buy when they hit around £15. Again I know I'm late but great video!
Good tips man. A lot of these sellers are hella greedy. 1 person wanted medievil 1+2 for almost $350 US dollars. It’s ridiculous but I agree just wait till the market goes down. Patience is the key!!
The reason why I started to collect PS1 games, especially the games from childhood and games which I've always wanted to own, is that I love nostalgia and simply just love PS1! It's always the best therapy for me for example playing just Crash Bandicoot 2 because I can leave all of the stress and pressure from work behind.
I’ve collected video games over 40 years and the only tip I can give is collect end of a consoles life I’ve had eleven full sets over the years and amassed 11000 games .
All these are great tips and very sound. Im so tempted and sometimes i buy stuff on ebay where i could wait. Facebook marketplace seems good too they have bulk buys like which ive done a bit on ebay and mostly i look at auctions but could see how offers could be a game changer. Also i go to my charity shop down the street from my work and find good stuff for ps2 xbox360 and newer. The one near my work is good for games where the one in my home town vary rarely when i see a game the disc is already stolen.
I used to find good stuff at the odd booty back in the day, but not any more. Lots of charity shops near me, but never any games around. I'll keep checking though.
Usually when I go to buy a game off eBay, I’ll watch it for a couple of days before I buy it in case they want to send me an offer. I recently bought 18 PS1 games off eBay as I wanted to bring my PS1 game collection to a close and most of them I got after the seller sent me a discount.
Some really good tips here. Play games is a great tip, I played the suffering on PS2 last year and I have got the second part coming soon. I like to buy in bulk too and charity shops are brilliant. Cheers 🙂
That magazine seller want MUCH more--WTF--these people drive me nuts! Oh man, love that little crafted Spyro! We're a bit scattered in our collecting. We've managed to get a good deal of the things we've actually wanted, which wasn't much, but now it's kinda all over. It's got pros and cons though for sure and being more focused is great advice and can help maintain funds and avoid burnout. We collect stuff that catches our attention--whether it's games, toys, comics, and so on. We don't have all the time we'd like to for actually playing games, but it IS fascinating and fun to delve into the things we missed the first time around. Having grown up through those console ages we can still appreciate the games for what they are from their respective time periods, so it's a great rabbit hole to go down.
@@TheRetroPerspective So true--I'm often the first to admit that games from the era of N64 and PS1 don't always look the best--BUT if they played well then, they STILL play well and it takes little to no time to not even notice the graphics.
decent tips but honestly being patient really just doesnt work for some games. i tried to be patient for kuon for a few years now but that game just keeps going up and i seriously doubt i will ever see that game for 60 bucks. i get that some may think a game isnt worth more than 5 bucks. but when a game is rare and in excellent cib condition sometimes you just have to give in and pay a premium price for a hard to find physical copy of a game you love. nothing else will do not even a rom. these days certain games are just not going down in value and never will or if they do it wont be by much. with each passing year it just gets harder to get them if you dont have the money. definitely need deep pockets to get the best each system has to offer. dont even get me started on the switch that system will bankrupt you if you dont show restraint.
Hi, I would appreciate your opinion. I currently have a copy of Cindy's Fashion World for PS1 in mint condition. How much would you say is the going rate if I chose to sell, and would you recommend maybe having it sent off to be graded? Many thanks.
Thanks Megan! I just need 90 onwards now except a few like 108 (The final issue), then a few more of the tips mags. Getting very hard to find now! I also need the Darth Maul cover mag which was an alt cover, 40 something I think.
I do collect for multiple consoles at once but most consoles I only want to have 20- 50 games on the system but it does get hard as I have 13 consoles in my collection
I try to get my ps1 games at a few local shops for the most part it's always exciting and a thrill to find something new or that youve been looking for. My best find so far and it was pretty expensive for being how old the game is but I was so excited just last week to find a copy of kingsfield for $50 the most expensive game I've ever bought for my ps1 collection other wise I try to stay around $15 or less being most of the games in the shops near me are in the $5-15 range with the rare occasional hit like kingsfield popping up for quite a bit more but I couldn't pass it up for it being a complete game especially being how expensive it is now been looking for that game at a decent price for going on almost 2 years now. How I pick out a game for the most part is by looking at the art and what gameplay is shown on the back not the best way i guess but I'm looking for more of if it's going to be fun to play than what the games worth even though that's also fun to find high priced games at low prices.

Would you say PlayStation 1 games are suddenly becoming very expensive and unobtainable? I can’t help but think I’ve chosen the wrong time to start collecting. Just went down into town and there wasn’t a sniff of any games, and eBay prices seem super high..
They do seem to have gone up a bit but I think it's mainly because of people being too accepting of those prices. Also depends on the game because some are still selling at around the same prices they always have like Discworld for example. Not exactly shooting up.
@@TheRetroPerspective fair enough mate. Also seems like majority of people on eBay are traders rather than genuine collectors. Might just collect PS2 games instead because they seem to be dirt cheap 👍
@@SequoiaStone When I started doing car boot sales in 2014, I was able to find games like crash bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon for 50p, now it’s like at least £10 apiece if I’m lucky. Problem with those places is you really need to get there extremely early, we’re talking 5 in the morning if you wanna even get a chance of getting some of the rare titles without burning a hole in your wallet, it seems like it’s just completely dried up. With that being said however there are some occasions where I sifted through a box of junk and found a copy of vib ribbon or saga frontier 2 for like 20p. In a lot of instances it was just a matter of luck, I was known at a lot of boot fairs for finding some of the rarest games, so much so I had people even stalking me so that they could get to the rarest games first. So… yeah… bit messed up isn’t it? Anyway good luck on your search, hope you don’t get anyone following you without knowing. 😆
The ps1 collecting side is getting Crazy right now but sometimes you have to just try and bargain with people also for me I agree support who you want to don’t buy every new game
I have no interest in complete sets, so when deciding what to collect I look at Metacritic and create a list of games that a) I had as a kid and want to play again for nostalgia. b) games I really wanted but didn’t get to play as a kid. and c) anything else that is highly rated and takes my fancy.
Have to disagree at 2:10 I only have a small collection so this isn't coming from a full set collector. But if you spent decades collecting to where youre approaching a full set, then of course you're going to pay whatever it costs to complete your collection. They've already spents years or decades, how does it make them less of a collector just because they aren't willing to wait any longer? How much you paid for a game has little to do with whether you're a collector or not
Sometimes prices make no sense. Like I picked up a much desired copy of Klonoa Door to Phantomile for about $100 a year ago, which was a ton to pay for one PS1 game (spoiler: Klonoa is well worth it) and now a copy is like $900-1000. Like, what? Not buying new games for full price is a huge point of collecting. Sometimes you miss out on the odd rare game that eventually ends up being worth more than retail, but that's not common. Some of my most sought after games are Brave Fencer Musashi, Einhander, Tomba!, all of which are $75-150ish, yet I've spent more than that in the past month or so just on new releases soooo
Tell friends and family that you are collecting. When i started 9 years ago i did got a lot of old stuff they considerd worthless, mostly gba and ps 2 stuff but still.
The people you mentioned at the early part of the video about outright buying all the PS1 games by splashing the cash in a couple of months. That makes me think it's probably the same people who downloaded diablo immortal on the smartphone when it came out and spent thousands just to upgrade all the best gear without even going through the game first...... 😐
@@TheRetroPerspective you mentioned your in lockdown in the video so casually like it's an everyday part of life. Don't take it personal your in the majority there.
@@stressball1324 yep crazy how cheap they once were. And that’s the problem with car boots, I never want to wake up that early 😂. Cheers mate
The ps1 collecting side is getting Crazy right now but sometimes you have to just try and bargain with people also for me I agree support who you want to don’t buy every new game
I've had success with bargaining on facebook collectors groups actually so that's a good one too!
Where did you get that playstation lava lamp from?
B&M bargains =) Don't think they sell them any more now though. Hopefully they'll do another run!
I have no interest in complete sets, so when deciding what to collect I look at Metacritic and create a list of games that a) I had as a kid and want to play again for nostalgia. b) games I really wanted but didn’t get to play as a kid. and c) anything else that is highly rated and takes my fancy.
Thanks for the tips Bro!
No problemo!
Have to disagree at 2:10
I only have a small collection so this isn't coming from a full set collector. But if you spent decades collecting to where youre approaching a full set, then of course you're going to pay whatever it costs to complete your collection. They've already spents years or decades, how does it make them less of a collector just because they aren't willing to wait any longer? How much you paid for a game has little to do with whether you're a collector or not
I was talking about people who complete collections in mere months or weeks.
Unless you care about the games being in english, buy japanese versions. They're much cheaper and A LOT more common than american copies.
Where did you get that beautiful spyro plush?
@onewingedangel6 on Instagram!
im super tight with buying games lol i hate spending over £20 lol
but some how i have 100s & 100s of games
Tell friends and family that you are collecting. When i started 9 years ago i did got a lot of old stuff they considerd worthless, mostly gba and ps 2 stuff but still.
I know people who have thrown stuff away despite knowing I collect and then face palming the next time they saw me xD
I just sold my PS1 collection for $10,000. I’m happy. Fuck them games lol I can still play on emulators. Other then the art. I won’t miss it.
I only collect PS1 as well. And DVD’s lol
Only DVD I'm bothered about is ITV's Oliver Twist. xD
Collecting for me its a slow Burn, sure I can buy a bunch of games on a week... But then I wont buy more until I at least play them for a while
Definitely best to take it slow I say! =)
That is equally as sad 😢
I bought The Misadventures of Tron Bonne at $225.00 US dollars in 'like new condition' CIB in 2018. No regrets whatsoever.
Blows my mind how nonchalantly ppl talk about lockdowns. We are talking about marshal law ppl! Wake up! Your freedoms shouldn't be negotiable.
Unsure what you're talking about...
@@TheRetroPerspective you mentioned your in lockdown in the video so casually like it's an everyday part of life. Don't take it personal your in the majority there. It's what makes me believe Covid lockdowns were a dry run for something much bigger. Governments wanted to see if the ppl would accept such harsh overlord watch in their lives and the experiment was a raging success.
@@Vipersinferno not taking it personally, just don't see the relevance. We do have an ultra right wing, fascist government here in the UK who want to kill/enslave the working class, but they didn't even do a lockdown until way after it was advised. Boris Johnson didn't even attend the European talks on the issue, too busy playing golf or spending our tax money on champagne. You're in the majority as most people didn't give a fuck about lockdown and I don't blame them.
@@TheRetroPerspective I don't know what right wing fascist is to you but in America when the mainstream media says right wing fascist we know its a lie. A fascists is a centralized government with a Dictator and the closest thing we have to that are left wing Democrats. Any state that had perpetual lockdowns and endless mask mandates were Democrat Governed states
@@Vipersinferno the democrats aren't left wing. You don't know what fascist means.
That were reet that were
you aren't supporting developers you like by buying 20+ year old used games, dude
I was talking about new games...pretty sure that was clear. I buy Yakuza and new indie games.
Not willing to pay more than one hundred bucks for a game in good condition. I’m just trying to get the games that I enjoyed so I can play them while they appreciate in value years later, in case I ever feel like parting.
