No, they didn't love each other in a matesprite way. Do you even know what matespriteship constitutes? It is an intense pity coupled with physical attraction, and there wasn't really much evidence to that, however there is a VERY good reason that they are moirails. People often make the mistake that moirails are best friends, and that could not be more wrong. Specifically, a moirail keeps a dangerous partner placated, as well as uses feeling jams to get to the root of the problem, not just keeping them calm, but helping them mature as a person as well, and better themselves. Nepeta and Equius worked so well as moirails because of the way their personalities fit the roles so well. Equius is a mass of boiling rage underneath the calm, controlling exterior, he is overprotective and controlling of Nepeta because not only are they best friends, but he knows that his rage would take over if he didn't have someone to keep him in place. Now, Nepeta would seem like a cute little pet who keeps him calm with her adorableness, but in fact the opposite is true. Really look at their interactions. Nepeta contradicts him at almost every turn, is wild and teases Equius constantly, even though she knows he's doing it for her own good in the end. Moirallegience isn't about crying and hugging the partner when they're in a mass of angst, it's about PUTTING THEIR ASS IN PLACE WHEN THEY'RE GOING TO LOSE THEIR SHIT. Nepeta is tough as nails, she doesn't hesitate to tacklepounce Equius to the floor, she knows people, and she knows her shit well enough to be able to calm Equius down without fear. People forget that Nepeta is brave as hell, she went to attack Gamzee immediately, she went off into the vents when Equius told her not to, she paints her shipping walls in dead animals and wears their pelts for fun. She is a wild troll, Equius is completely restrained, and it sets a perfect counterbalance for each of the two's respective flaws. Matespriteship is entirely different, and is basically blackrom without the rivalry. They have strong feelings of pity towards the other party, but have no urge to help them or keep them calm, instead they want to screw them for whatever makes them feel pity for them. People often forget that love is not the driving emotion for troll quadrants, it is in fact pity, and whether that pity makes them want to bone, like Karkat for Terezi, or actively help the other party better themselves, like Nepeta and Equius, is the driving different between matespriteship and moirallegiance.
