As a healthcare worker, I see the shame when I tell people who are "boyfriends" and "girlfriends" of a patient that they are not allowed to sign any paperwork for the patient or make any medical decisions because they are not legally family. People do not realize that the "piece of paper" is what makes a couple legal family members. There is a reason why the "pride" people wanted the ability to get legally married, although it is a false marriage for them in the eyes of God.
