    I hate this song and and have done since 82 . To me it it just signified the end of life as I knew it at 16. Never ever has there been a band that can influence so many people and bring them absolute joy like The Jam did. Still not over it 40 yrs later.

    Hard to put into words how much I love this. I remember watching it go out live on Channel 4... my 10 year old mind was totally blown - we didn't have a video recorder so it was all about the moment.. It was years before I saw it again.. Far from my favourite Jam song but this live version just totally slays. As I get older the Jam mean more and more to me. I love the Beatles, Stones, Who, Smiths and countless other English bands - but for me personally the Jam are the greatest band ever.

    • @underock4

      Bizarrely, I was about to post, it's far from my favourite Jam track too, only it captures their swagger and energy. Sadly, too few decent videos of them. Love loads of bands, but Sound Effects and Setting Sons, will always, be in my top 5 albums. Timeless genius !

    • @redacted2275
      @redacted2275 3 года назад +8

      @@tetedepoulet8651 Yeah... many people take Foxton's bass arrangements for granted... I think Weller did the right thing by breaking up The Jam if he felt like it was the genuine thing to do at that time but Foxton deserves all the praise that sometimes he doesn't get. He is the best bass player of the punk/post-punk era, a power trio simply doesn't sustain itself without a perfect bass player... it doesn't have the luxury to have a crappy bass player.
      Just watch Weller playing The Jam's songs nowadays: it's lifeless. His band is great playing tunes from The Style Council and his solo career but that's it... The Jam doesn't work without Foxton and Buckler and it deserves to be acknowledged. Weller was able to sing, experiment with his guitar and shine on The Jam because he had two excelent musicians maintaining it all.

      Yes, I remember it well. I set my tape recorder up in front of the telly and told my parents to stay out of the room for an hour. I wanted to shout and sing but couldn't as I wanted to record it. Went out that night to a bonfire on the estate and kept playing in on my ghetto blaster. I always thought it was a poor idea to start with Ghosts though. Difficult to get to velocity after that. And the program cut when Precious was into it's final swing.

    We have went from this to the fuckin’ X-Factor!?! The world has been in steady decline for centuries, and now we are doomed, because we don’t have artists like this who care enough to speak truth to power. While this was a farewell song, they left behind a catalogue of anthems that endure. Not bad for three lads from Woking.

    Paul Weller was the real deal. Someone who's talent far exceeded the hype. For me he made the right decision to end the jam when he did. Quitting while you are at the top is always the best way to go out. After all there is only one way to go from there. Like Bowie he needed to constantly reinvent himself to stay motivated.

      The context of this is that they're splitting up something like 6 weeks later and they know it.... in some ways it's all the more astonishing because... why bother? Especially Buckler and Foxton....They have nothing to prove but everything to prove... It must have been painful to do this show. However from 1:37 on-wards when they hit the middle eight it just shifts up a gear.. and never gives up. It's a telepathic thing, but they TRANSCEND here. The gasp at the end from Foxton - out of breath..insane. ON LIVE TV! Unreal.. Never bettered IMO.
