How horrible that men who killed millions died believing that their actions were just, but the man who saved 1,100 lived with guilt because he couldn’t save 1,101.
Damn.
Many of the greatest acts of evil in human history have been conducted by collectivists proclaiming their "compassion" in the name of the "Greater Good", and some of the most heroic selfless actions were conducted by their opposition who actually value each individual.
So well said.
No. It was because he could. But didn't.
@@234i9I’d argue he needed to keep up appearances
Schindler believed that all he was doing was giving people a reprieve from death, not a pardon. He believed that every one of his workers would eventually be killed and all he was doing was delaying the inevitable. And in that, he was buying them time to live. It was only when the war ended that the prospect of actually saving them became real in his mind, and thats when he realized that all the people he had been granting a reprieve to would now live long lives in peace. And with that, he realized all the people who could have saved had he been just a little more stubborn and had just a little more hope.
Schindler was a good man faced with extremely difficult decisions everyday. Even he knew that if he tried to outright save everyone, the nazis would shut him down and theyd all be thrown into the camps. But he felt sorrow because every time he slumped and gave just a little, another person died, and he felt the weight of that kind of reality all at once. The feeling that so many people were alive because he had been strong, and so many people who had died because he wasnt strong enough to save them too.
Beautiful summary of his thoughts. Schindler was sent here to do miracles and he really did. What compassion.
many of the nazis knew what he was doing. many thought he took in jews because he needed free labor to continue his profiteering from the war. he walked a fine line for a lot of years. everyone he saved was so entirely thankful for his sacrifices and he(schindler) asked for nothing in return. that is the mark of a man and the world today could learn something from him. maybe we dont have another genocide like in hitlers reich, but maybe if we reach out and help one person in our community, the world would be a different place. maybe that one act of generosity spawns 2 generations of empowered individuals.

edit: it starts with you telling your friends and family you love them. if you give money to a pan-handler, tell them you love them.....if thats not your speed, tell them "its not your fault" and it could change so much.
These people who did amazing things to save lives during this time are people we will forever admire ..great compassionate and very brave souls..but I do not wish to be one of them .but IF it ever came to that again ,, I would offer refuge and protection till my last breath,,, God protect us all,, ❤🙏🎶🕊

No matter how many times I watch this movie it makes me weep every single time. Just seeing this makes me cry, everyone needs to watch this at least once.
You should read the Talmud, It Is quite the opposite
I think the real weight of this scene comes from the fact that for most of the movie he’s been calm and collected for the most part.
Always thought it was corny when he broke down, and started talking about how his valuables could have gained him one more life saved. But I realized, that he hasn’t shown emotion the whole movie up this point. He knew what he was doing, he just didn’t realize the vastness of it. When confronted by the 1100 people he saved, he can’t help but feel, and wonder about the faces that COULD have been there, but weren’t. He finally accepted the fact that these people were alive, because of him, and it was just too much.
That first “And i didnt” truly breaks me. Impeccable acting from the whole cast

“There will be generations because of what you did” that is one of the hardest lines I’ve ever heard and probably one of the greatest accomplishments anyone can have in their life
The fact that he genuinely didn't know if saving them was an option. At the time, it was hard to tell that the Germans were going to lose
What the the movie doesn't tell is that Oskar Schindler was forever ruined by the horrors he had to witness with a straight face and the nauseatingly heavy weight of his decisions, even if they turned out to be mostly correct.
He didn't just risk his life. He sacrificed his sanity, his future, so other people could survive a genocide.
