Good stuff, you make it look very easy! What's the heat temp blowing on the inside? I installed a geothermal several years ago and only get about 87 degrees.
Best video I've watched on mini-split installation. It's perfect because it includes wiring the disconnect box. Perfect! 😎
I try to make all of my videos full and complete. Thanks for watching!
@@TheExcellentLaborer I'm like you. I love concrete but I'm going to use the wall mount brackets. I'm only here part of the year. I want to be able to keep the unit away from the vegetation, without pouring a gigantic pad.
Such a great video. So in depth and really clear with the instructions. Best part is how well u did the electrical portion. Ive never done a single thing involving electrical work, but i feel very confident that I'll be able to do this part myself along with the rest of the install and probably save $300-400. Can't beat that with a stick!!! Thank u sir
Wow, this video was really easy to understand. I’ve never got an explanation close to this regarding these systems. Outside of the electrical work I feel I could tackle this install. I will be gutting and re doing the inside of my home this spring and this is something I’ve been interested in installing. Thank you so much!
I’m glad you really enjoyed this video! The mini split system is simple to install with the precharge line-sets. That is what I enjoy about the DIY version of this system. Appreciate you watching!
Yea u had fun with this unit
Excelsior! The best all in one DIY tutorial! The way you explained everything sounded like I'm in a training class, also the idea of breaking the whole concept into parts to add more focus was a good idea. I am installing this split heat pump in a couple months and I am doing all my research to get prepared. You made it so easy... Thank you.
I bought one of these last summer and looked for YT install videos. This is the first video I’ve seen😂 so after 8 months I guess it’s time to go back and complete the installation 😂
Beautiful video. I've been thinking about installing one of these myself and you've just solidified my decision to purchase and go forward with it. AND THANK YOU for including the install of the disconnect.
I love how you take the mystery out of stuff!
I love how detail you make your videos keep up the good work 👍
Wow! What a great thorough video! I really appreciate how you showed each and every step.
I try to make all of my videos very intuitive to use as a guide. Appreciate your comment. Thanks for watching Heather!
The a lot of videos showing how to install these, but I would love to see a multi head unit install.
More importantly, the longetivity of the units and hoses, as well as durability.
Top notch tutorial, bravo sir!
I love these. I am going to be installing a 4/5 ton Mr Cool Hyper-Heat universal. I think the no vac/pre charged lines could be the future.
Man that’s going to be one awesome set up! Yes, the pre-charged lines make things so easy. I am truly amazed on how DIY friendly the install was. My dad is thinking about getting one now after helping and seeing how straightforward it was. Thanks for watching and good luck on your project!
Thanks again, Josh! Love all your videos.
Excellent video! I'm going to install a competitors unit next week. Thanks for the step b step!
hopefully yours was actual precharged line like advertised.. we've bought 3 competitors units (and returned them) as they were NOT precharged and required an ac technician to come out
I installed the 4 head unit in my house I have a crawlspace so I cut the Sheetrock out to install the line sets it was alittle more work but still rather simple and because I have a crawlspace I left the coiled up lines underneath the house and just uncoiled what I needed to exit the foundation, all and all alittle time consuming but pretty simple it’s been about 3 and a half years and still working great, it takes a little time to clean the units one a year 😮
You the man josh!
Another Excellent Video.
Thanks Josh, we’ve been looking into these.
Fantastic! I hope this video helps you understand more about them. Thanks for watching!
I learned a lot, great detail on the install.
We have a small cabin with not much room and this will work great for us.
Thank you 🙏
Thanks
Nice job!
Thank you!
Dear bro, I consider that before opening discharge along with suction valve of out door unit of Ac's with elenkey we should vacuum at 500 micron with Duble stage vacuum pump .
Thank you for this step-by-step, very helpful. What about the inside filter? I only saw that tiny one, which you did not use. Does it have a regular dust filter? Also, does a USA-made unit equivalent to the Mr Cool exist?
Getting ready to install the same unit but a 24k. This is one of the best install guides I have seen. My line set will run out the wall then to the right for a little ways before dropping down. Plan on using the same lineset cover you did. My exterior walls are stucco, any tips on attaching to stucco walls?
Buen video
I see you went with the minimum 8/2 wire for the outdoor electrical connection, was the reason to choose that over the 6/2 recommended just a matter of cost? I'm looking to purchase the wire for mine today, so am not sure if I should spring for the 6/2 or just go 8/2 like you did. Thanks!
What timing. My 12k btu unit showed up today 🎉. How does boring through the side of the house impact the moisture barrier? I need to do this and later a vented range hood. Makes me nervous.
Is Gasket/Thread Sealant a good idea to ensure everything is sealed?
I followed these instructions. Mine appears to be a lemon. It powers on but the compressor never comes on and I get a PC 03 error. From what I can tell this means low refrigerant. I didn't get any bubbling when I sprayed the soapy solution.
The other part of this that is not mentioned and I feed is disingenuous is the cost of MrCool products. The unit comes with refrigerant line to use that is 25 ft, but if you need longer get ready to shell out some money. A 35ft "precharged" refrigerant line is about $430. If you want to extend off of what you have, ie. 25ft + 16ft, the 16ft refrigerant line costs $179 and the coupler costs $380 for 4 pieces of brass about 4 in long and a longer electrical line. Again, everything is supposed to be precharged, including the couplers. This is all on top of the $2800 I spent for the unit at Costco. Now I still have to hire someone to come out and see what's wrong with it.
I'm sure MrCool didn't want you complaining about their pricing at all so they happily sent you a unit to promote. I'll continue to try making my unit work since I put a lot of hard work into installing it, but I'll never buy MrCool products again.
We installed a MrCool for our new construction here in San Juan County, WA, and are quite pleased with it, but were dismayed that the State Electrical Inspector would not pass it with the electrical wires provided. We needed to replace the electrical wires from the air handlers with the tray cable approved by code. Plus, we were required to put those wires into conduit where they exited the wall going to the condenser. MrCool didn't reply to our inquires of why they don't provide cables that meet code or suggest that conduit be used. Plus, we could not figure out how to hard wire in the wall thermostat, and the batteries run down pretty quick. Nevertheless, we are quite happy with it.
electrical codes will vary by location
Great Video, I have a question about the refrigerant charge. It looks to me like the refrigerant is stored in the Compressor / condenser unit and not in the actual lines. The lines look open after you removed the protective covers. This would indicate that they are not under a vacuum either.
Is this the case?
If so, would I not be able to cut and shorten the lines if needed? I would solder a union joint in the pipe to avoid flares and threaded end issues.
Let me know what you think. Thanks.
I'm no pro by any means. That being said, from what I can tell is this. The terminology used in my opinion is misleading. Not the fault of Josh as all manufacturers of the DIY units use the same terminology. They keep stating that the line set is "pre charged" which is misleading. The refrigerant is Pre charged in the compressor unit for the line set. The line set itself is actually "Pre vacuumed" not "pre charged". The ends remain sealed until connected therefore no need to pull a vacuum before releasing the refrigerant. It's actually a waste of money on the "Pre Charged DIY systems" as getting a vacuum pump and gauge set is relatively inexpensive and performing a vacuum on the line set is simple. You can get a regular Mini split system for about half the price of these units and the vacuum equipment can be had for less than $130. It's really a simple process. Random question to who may know... This might be a dumb question, I might be a little confused ha Say you have well water: the submersible pump brings it to the pressure tank, pressure tank through the filters you have/need, then the cold water is ready for use. There's a line that diverts off to the hot water heater and the cold water heads down the dip tube and heats up, so far correct? the question is the hot water in the water heater still pressurized by the pressure tank or is there some sort of pump that the heater has?
What was cost of having the disconnect installed?
It’s getting 🥱 late! … But I’ll catch more of this video tomorrow.
I need to heat / cool 1800 sq feet; two zones. I wonder what the tipping point of DIY vs professional install. How big is too big.
Check out the MrCool products on their website and Amazon. It is amazing what is offered by them!
What if it doesn’t line up with studs?
How long do you predict this live show is going to take?
It’s a live chat. The show is not live. It’s a premiere of my new video but I will be there for the chat live for Q&A. I hope that helps!
What BTU was that unit you installed? 0:20
What made you use the neutral as hot? Is it because the actual breaker box inside already has neutral?
that's how all the dual appliances breakers are wired in my box -
What is the model number? Price? Where did you buy it?
Do you secure the outside unit to the concrete pad? Missing a screw where you wired the disconnect (top left side)? It looked loose……. Thank you for the video!
Excellent.,. As all~ways.,. and yep.,. It's best to eat your spinach ahead of installing them their line sets.. you'll need the muscle. With alignment, (seriously) prefect and make sure the angle of Dat dangle does not over pressure when putting the screws to her in a straight manor.,. (Lesson the opportunity to strip or cross thread!!) And best be careful not to kink!! Yep,. I'd use the clay and back up the interior with the spray insulation as it gets eradicated with exposure to weather over time.. High fives with the PL (polyurethane caulk sealant) at the siding.. dat schtuff's completely and totally nuclear bomb proof!! Amen Brother... rock on!
Thank you so much! It sounds like you have a lot of experience installing these. Everything you said in this comment is a good point! I think it’s cool how companies are looking at making things more DIY friendly like this series. As you know, I enjoy DIY as much as I can! I appreciate you stopping by and watching!
Do the lines freeze in the winter???
Not that I noticed!
Can I skip the disconnect option and just have it receiving power from a power outlet that’s no longer being used ? If I want to disconnect cant I just shut off at breaker ? Would just be diy more freindly if I didn’t have to higher an electrician as it’s supposed to be diy .isnt there a 120v version of this or something like a plug 🔌 that can be connected to wall hiring a professional is expensive how much would they charge to do the wiring to a disconnect box .
Per code in my area I have to have a disconnect. It is something that an electrician can install with no problem. I hope that helps!
What BTU was that unit you installed?
It's the 36,000 BTU unit
thanks...like all way easy to do things with you ...i love you hel....... please do like to the video
You are welcome! I enjoy making these videos for my subscribers as well. Stay tuned for more to come!
I wud have ran the lines inside the wall instead of the exterior
I guess it's easy to love this Mr. Cool if it's free. I paid for mine. Mine did not come with a hole saw. The tape they give you does not have a sticky side. How are you supposed to get it to adhere to the lines when you wrap them? The mounting bracket is so short you can't hit more than one stud on the inside mounting. The piece they give you to go through the wall sticks out on the inside because you have to drill the wall, so the pipe has a downward slant so when you put the plastic through the wall it isn't flat to the wall. Customer service is very slow, and the instructions could use some rewording. I'm going to fire it up on Saturday and if it doesn't work the way I want it to it's going back in the box back to Amazon.
Only downside to this unit that I see is the line set. ….That would drive me nuts…Should be an option to order a line set closer to the actual length give or take. Still a great video as usual..
A line sets cut to length would be pretty sweet. I think problem there would be all of the extra custom lines that would have to be made. The coil actually doesn’t look too bad once you get it done. I appreciate your comment!
@@TheExcellentLaborer I hear ya…it looks all pro till you see the coil….😂hey it works..👍
Cut the line set and vac it down before releasing the refrigerant, done deal
@@savagecr-x2438 I’m no hvac guy but by doing that would that not throw off the proper refrigerant levels since it’s charged to the length of original pipe?
Hence over charged.
I’M Now going to …….its getting to be a little repetitious, every other sentence is “ now I’m going to “
Good luck… that system wasn’t placed under vacuum or a nitro purge since by opening the lines u let atmospheric moisture and particulate into it. Might as well throw it out within the year. If it makes it that far. Plus the voided warranty. Lolll
Excellent DUDE!!!!
I appreciate it!
you forgot to vacuum. Here in Brazil we do vacuum
What would you vacuum? I thought he said the refrigerant is already in the line.
For this DIY, lines come pre charged, so no need to vacuum. If the lines do not come pre charged, then vacuum is necessary.
Nice video. But the whole “Pre charged lineset” wording in the manual is false. This is why they only offer a 5year warranty instead of a 10 or 15 year warranty like Daiken does
Before releasing the refrigerant you should have done vacuuming to the line set
21:48 "Nice clean professional look" Yeah but in that shot the camera is conveniently angled so it doesn't show that HUGE COIL of excess lineset. Which, I might add, is NOT protected from the "sun and weather" (19:34) in any way.
If that coil is fine unprotected, then the rest of it would have been fine unprotected too. Makes no sense. "It looks nicer though", you may say. Yes it does. But that's not what you gave as a reason when you were putting it up. That hard plastic covering was going to make those lines "last many many years". But the excess coil is not covered so you're saying that part of the coil will NOT last "many many years"? If any part of the line is breached the whole thing is lost. In fact that coil on the ground is MORE prone to damage due to animals, lawn equipment, women, bigfoots, etc. Makes no sense.
Yeah I know I could build myself a covering if I bought this kludgy system but I'm not talking about my theoretical install. I'm talking about this video.
And Now I'm going to leave a Like!! Excellent video,Thank you for sharing!!!
