GERMAN REEF TANKS - no skimmer, no sump - 1000 liters mixed SPS and LPS saltwater aquarium - DSB

- Опубликовано: 20 май 2020
- The reef tank (180 x 60 x 60 cm) setup by Bogdan from Hövelhof was built without a sump, without a skimmer and with self-made LED lightning. The aquascape is composed of a mixed stock. Inside there're SPS, LPS and other corals next to some tropical fish. Bogdan has been specialized on Zoas. The whole tank has got covered. The fraktanks have 160 x 50 x 50 and (2 x) 70 x 35 x 15 cm.
Bogdan breeds rare zoas. If you would like to, you are very welcome to contact him: bogdan-sell@t-online.de

Stunning mixed reef and refreshing to see a successful tank without every single gadget n gizmo on the market.
I think you got a point but his a professional. Some people just wants to have a saltwater tank without the know how.
This guy knows how to make great videos and keep you coming back. Great content the music is very pleasant. Not to many doing it better.
Thanks a lot my friend! awesome to get some feedback like that :)
he is a magician. he needs to share how he keeps his tank this gorgeous.
Thats what I feel too. Seafriendlyreef, dude you shoud interview this guy and bring all his secrets out. Man this reefer knows things and its trulely magical.
Listen again at 1:55... water changes. Skimmers may seem expensive, but they quickly pay for themselves in savings on salt. It also appears to be a rather lightly stocked tank, so probably not a huge requirement for water changes even without a skimmer.
Although I agree with the general sentiment that your videos are short, I think that's also part of the magic. They're just long enough to peak our interest, and leave us longing for more. I can definitely appreciate your straight to the point style!
Nice! Thank you Traian, that's exactly what I want to show. Of course you can not see everything in 2 minutes, but in my opinion it is enough to check the whole tank out :)
Thank you for that feedback!
Simply stunning! For me, the most imteresting and beautiful tank yet. The colours are just popping out. Incredible, considering the self-made LEDs. BRAVO!
Thank you very much for that great feedback! I could not believe it until I saw it with my own eyes haha
I feel the same about this reef tank being an eye candy. The colours are all trapped in this glass box and I wish I could get to know the about the light setup used here in detail. The scaping is very pleasing with the dimensions being just appropriate. Very nicely filmed. Thank you Seafriendlyreef. But, I wish you could afford us the pleasure of staring at the tank 'full-screen' for atleast a little close to a minute at one go. Please make another video of this tank shot in a way as if I were sitting in front of the tank and staring at it.
@@anupaminthetube Hi thank you for that great feedback :) That tank is far away from my home so I have to check out if this is possible. But also good to know for future videos ;)

Beautiful tank and a beautifully shot video.

Bogdan! Your tank is one of a kind , you've mastermind the balance in the ocean , you've made something so difficult to look so simple , and thanks for sharing , another amazing video from this channel that become my favorite one !!!

The tank looks incredible
Absolutely, thank you for your feedback Steve
I've been thinking about removing the skimmer from my tank for months. I think I have more confidence to do it now! and this tank is beautiful.
absolutely great to hear! Please let us know the result :)
Love the video! way too short though :) Would love to hear about Bogdan's philosophy on maintaining this tank, water parameters, approach to lighting, etc...
Thank you for your great feedback Charles, I can imagine :) The videos on the channel normally are a bit short, because producing them in that quality takes so much time. For that video about 10-15 hours next to my normal job. So releasing a video a week is hard work for me haha but I am going to make them a bit longer and give more informations in it
@@seafriendlyreef Hi great videos! Would it make sense to hire a video editor?

Fabulous tank and additional frag tanks. Great camera work. Would love to have an in-depth look at his setup and routine. Understanding how he manages the requirement of his fish along with his corals.
30 years ago having a deep sand bed was the norm, but toxic tank was also very common. Chemistry, biology and routine maintenance is far better understood now.
Good warning to all, don’t try this at home. Thanks again, stunning images.
Hi Ian, thanks a lot for your great feedback! :)

Just amazing, very impressive. Thank you for sharing. The video was a little bit too short though. Are you sure there was no hidden skimmer 😉
haha thank you Nils, yes I am very sure that there was no skimmer, I checked also the space behind the aquarium ;) After releasing that video I get many messages, that there're a lot of people working without skimmers :0
Seafriendlyreef, dude you rock. Out of all your tank videos, this is the tank that I would love to sit in front of and admire. Hey can we get a video showing only the tank in full frame only that is, no camera work nothing (though I love your videos for your unique camera work which I haven't found in any other channel), just shot with the camera standing still in front of the tank. The reason for this is that I want to have the feel of being seated right in front of this stunning beauty and stare and stare at it, for atleast a minute. Haha. Hope you understand, haha. Am I being greedy here. Hahaha. See you man, take care.
Hi my friend, thank you for your great feedback :D maybe you can write Jack Elliot here, he is an absolutely smart guy and maybe he is going to create such a video for you. Because that tank is far away from my home :D You can find his Facebook contact in the video description.
Take care, too and best regards

@@seafriendlyreef Ah!! I understand. Ok. I think I should be talking to the man himself. Anyway. Thankyou.
I had a small 40 liter reef tank for 7 years with no filter etc. Just cheap lights and airstones!
I got the idea from an article i saw in a reefkeeper magazine.
Basically you did big water 70% changes once a week ( so no dosing ) and plenty of water movement.
I only had a pair of blue damsel and a large cleanup crew. I even raised some fry in it because nothing was skimmed or filtered out. Much plankton. I had a mix of montipora, poccies, zoa , birdsnest and other very cheap coral.
There is a channel on RUclips with a ten year old pico tank thats a vase! It uses the same technique and is very beautiful.
Look up Maritza the vase reef.
hi thank you for your feedback :) where do you take the 70% water for water changes? from another tank?
@@seafriendlyreef
Here are some details.
I had a very big 280 liter barrel of pre mixed seawater that would last 9 water changes ( 2 months) before I would need to refill and mix..
Our local water has a very low TDS so RO water wasn't needed.
Water movement was from 3 airstones in an acrylic pipe and one cheap wavemaker on a timer. No filter but some live rock
No substrate! A large limestone tile covered the base to hide the glass. It probably also worked as a bio filter too. Eventually it was covered in coralline growth and looked very pretty.
The light was just a very cheap Amazon LED spotlight (3 cool white + 2 blue).
The whole set up cost less than $100 as the tank was a repurposed fresh water aquarium.
All the corals were the most common ones and came from frags. The 2 blue damsel fish were free because no one wants damsel fish!
It was a lovely tank, with SPS corals of orange, pink and pale blue. The zoas were mainly yellow. I deliberately chose corals of certain colours to make it bright and harmonious. Also they offset the 2 blue damsels.
I am not a big fan of tanks with no theme or restraint. Those that are a collection of many species : crammed tanks of all colours.
A display of 5 sps species and 3 zoa types was more than enough for this small tank.
All grew into large colonies and the occasional fragments that broke off soon re-established themselves into new growth on the limestone tile. Mainly the bird's-nest and zoa.
Maintenance was fw top up when needed. And once a week cleaning glass, detritus siphon and 70 - 90 % water change. That took 40min all up. And daily feedings of course. It was less maintenance than my planted freshwater tanks!
The damsels spawned often and there was always fry in the tank. Some i saved but most got eaten i think.
Eventually the fish passed away ,I swapped my corals and dismantled the tank.

Too short video. Maybe better so people don't kill fish n corals trying to re-create this.
WONDERFUL TANK!!!
absolutely, thank you very much for that great feedback :)
You don't really need a sump or a skimmer for a reef tank you can just use a hang on back filter
Heftig mit den ableger becken die versteckt sind! Da wäre es interesant gewesen wie alles zusammenspielt von der filterung !

To my question about the water change, his answer was only: from time to time haha
He is doing the simple balling method
@@seafriendlyreef hahahaha very good. I sent an email to him but I think he is not going to answer :-) Thank you very much !
@@Roberto_Reefer lets wait :P
Balıklar çok güzel seni takip etmeye başladım
Make large and frequent water changes and keep the fish population low..and for sure do not over feed and food should be live to make even less waste.
Still,a skimmer is very effective..if he wanted more fish? He has to hook up a skimmer.
that's right, thank you for your feedback ;)
I’ve had nothing but trouble running skimmers, my tank is way happier with no skimmer. There are plenty of amazing tanks that run with no skimmer. I hate them anyway, noisy and power hungry. I’d only use if I have big fish load.
exactly, I am thinking about trying it, too haha
After 15 years reefing , I believe skimmers pull out good stuff and require more water and trace elements be replaced. I use simple floss and tiny carbon with a fuge and scrubber, oh and important is an air stone feed from outside to keep PH up and a little Kalkwasser. Just add T5 lighting with good water flow :) I still dose nitrate and a little phosphate, 6 fish in 140 gallon :) oh and Live rock is key. Rock solid KH.
