- The Conservative MP Sir Paul Beresford fails to understand what the SNP's David Linden is asking him in parliament because of his accent. Linden, who represents Glasgow East, repeats his question twice with no success, before the Commons deputy speaker Lindsay Hoyle suggests 'the answer might be helped if you can reply in writing'

Conservative immigrant MPs must do more to become integrated into the community.
Clearly trying, it would help if on the second time the Scotsman did slow down a bit.

The fact is many foreigners find it easier to understand the Scottish accent than the southern English accent. I’ve heard this mentioned time and again by both non-native speakers and Americans. I think it’s the combination of non-rhoticity (dropping the final “r”) and the broad “a” in words like “path” and “chance” that throws a lot of foreigners off.
Wait what?
But not this kiwi eh?
'The southern English accent' - I think you'll find there's quite a few accents in the South of England!
One can turn on the subtitles [CC]
wait, r u serious?
I like how the speaker is chuckling along in a thick Chorley accent as if he is speaking crystal clear English
Completely condescending and reflects how Scotland is treated by Westminster in general.
Disagree. The onus is on the speaker to make themselves understood. Linden's pace of speaking is much too quick.
Isn't Tony Blair a Scot?
@@utuber2 Which wasn't made clear by the other guy . Even if he had spoke at a snails pace he still would not have " understood " the question

I am not British but did not understand his speech since it was so fast and not unclear. please could you repeat more slowly?

He's speaking too fast that's why it's difficult to understand him.

After listening to Sir Alex Ferguson after every interview, I could pick up few of the words from the gentleman who was asking about "disability"

I'm an American from the American South, and his accent is perfectly understandable to me. But we have some very unique accents of our own.

Yea, I can't understand him either
Thank goodness for subtitles
Guys I was born LA and raised in Mexico and I understood him fine.
I think it's not about his accent that the gentleman was struggling to comprehend It's the speed at which he was saying it and without any pause between any of the words made him clueless 😅😂
He can't understand that?
I understand his Glaswegian accent very well.
We are able to understand him cause we can hear through a recording. But for that old man the voice must have been echoing a lot.
I come from Edinburgh and I cant understand him lol.
I am Dutch and I understood him just fine.
As a Mexican American who’s also dealt with a lot of broken English different dialects in Mexico and just overall having a very colorful ethnic friend group I’m surprised I understand him pretty well
I kinda understood him.
I understood him but i had to focus a bit more.
So what did he say?
That was not difficult, as an American. As usual politicians are not - "are no' "? - the smartest people, I guess.
He actually made quite an effort to make that as clear as possible, I think Mr Beresford was just trying to avoid the question.
To be honest, i didnt even try to understand, cuz it sounds like klingon to me. I would even call it a disrespect to speak so fast when your english sounds like this. The guy literaly just spit out all the vowels he had right into my face. Why should i bother trying to figure it out?
I'm Scottish and normally wouldn't doubt that there might be some powerplay going on by the Tory who claims not to be able to understand the SNP bloke, but he is speaking too quickly , ideally, for public speaking.
I understood him perfectly and I’m Cuban American and English is my second language.
I understood everything,... with subtitles on.
It doesn't matter if you commenters here hear him perfectly. And again, doesn't matter when the ones that need or have to understand him does not.

Are you kidding me? I can understand him easily lol. Obviously the Old guys friends from Eton didnt allow Scots lol.
This was funny. People taking offence need to chill out. It’s universally known that nobody outside Glasgow can ever understand what they’re saying haha.
When did you last visit Glasgow?, Every accent in the UK is difficult to understand.
For me, the problem in understanding is cadence more than pronunciation. He does not pause AT ALL after "estate" and even speeds up. Sorry, but if you're asked to make yourself more clear, how in the heck do you figure that means to run all your sentences together?
OMG i'm non-english but yet i understand the one of the diffuclt accents across UK
He does speak fast but as I’m fae Edinburgh I can understand him no problem. I’m now living in Australia and I get this multiple times each day it can be soul destroying not being understood I’m thinking somedays why do I bother talking.
This is why there will soon be an independent Scotland.
Oh that's why. Aussies not understanding Scots. Perfectly understandable
I learned a new word, Antipodean. It explains why this MP didn't understand the accent.
Here is a person who is "Antipodean", who understand perfectly fine the accent.
@@samuellee9752 Are you as old as he in the video?
When somebody ask you nicely to repeat yourself, the right thing to do is slow down a bit
I can’t believe that a native English speaker could not understand the question. I reckon, perhaps the Scotsman was talking too fast, and one may miss some words. But the overall question sounds quite clear to me, with no urgent need to have it rephrased. So I guess the Tory representative was trying to fool around.
Paul Beresford has this problem with his constituents too.
Well I'm a bulgarian and i understood everything without any problem..
I had no problem understanding all of what he was saying. Maybe the elder gentleman should invest in better hearing aid equipment?
this is just a tactic to avoid the question i bet

Mr Speaker, I know from speaking to parliamentary colleagues that certain aspects of the estate including the Northern estate is not great with people having certain disabilities. I want to ask the honourable gentleman what work is being done to make this place more accessible.
Very clear to me.
Could it have been meant as a joke?

I'm French and I can't understand a word of what he's saying. I think it's so rude to speak with such a thick accent when you're not in your open country. He did it on purpose.
Mr Random I think it’s insulting for people to expect you to change your accent just cause they are too ignorant to listen. Most torys are arrogant and don’t like snp, I think it’s more likely he’s pretending he doesn’t understand everything he’s saying

tbh one of the advantages of growing up moving around the world and going to international schools is understanding tough accents well
Fixed it: "The Conservative MP Sir Paul Beresford fails to understand what the SNP's David Linden is asking him in parliament because he preferred to ignore the question."
Exactly this. The way he asks him to repeat gives it away , normally another person would be like, oh sorry I'm foreign-born , could you repeat it slowly for me , he doesn't look like he is genuinely trying to understand what's being said , although granted the Scottish MP is a fast speaker.
I'm a foreigner, but I can still understand him, though it is EXTREMELY hard. Given that English people have more access to Scottish accent, I have legitimate reasons to think that the older gentleman is teasing the younger one.
No, it's not too common to hear such a strong Scottish accent so fast so an older gentleman like he in the video would struggle
That is so true and in public,so he is not just teasing but trying to inflict humiliation,an action that is standard procedure in the house on Scots when ever the can inflict it,Tory MPs at their best, and all the English reading this in the comments know this,as most are unionist,as are those who are saying they are Scots and saying they cant understand him.
the older gentleman was from New Zealand or Australia, originally, which might explain why he was struggling to understand an accent he was not completely familiar with. Most English people grew up around the various regional accents of the UK and so don't have any difficulty with it. I would give the immigrant MP (the older gentleman) a broader benefit of the doubt, because of his foreign birth, in this situation.

Tory MP meant: "speak proper English, not this gibberish Scottish mumbling" 🤣
Not a native English speaker. I could understand him, I had difficulties to get all the words right though. I have to say it's just because that was fast as hell, it's got nothing to do with the accent.
I'm not a native English speaker, too. I totally got the main point of the Scottish speaker at the second attempt - but, you're right - his speech was too fast even at the second try...

IMO this was a play on context. The question is about being accommodating for disabilities. Well if you can't understand the question due to the accent it is a play on words.
