  • Since I work in news and have been a fan of What's My Line for a couple years now, I think Daly is an amazing journalistic figure.
Didn't even focus on any of his opinions or his series highlighting stories called It's News to Me.
He is definitely under-appreciated and sadly forgotten, even by news people.

I'm just discovering "Whats My Line" and "I've Got a Secret," on RUclips. Such great shows and a great era! People were courteous, called each other Mr, Miss, and Mrs, shook hands with each guest, so respectful of one another. We could use some of those old courtesies today.

I just found out that, according to Wikipedia, John Daly won 5 Emmy Awards for his journalism work, AND 3 Peabody Awards for his journalism work, all at ABC. Daly’s journalism work was an amazing example for future news anchors to follow. Except for Morgan Beatty/Drew Pearson at DuMont, Douglas Edwards, John Cameron Swayze, and Chet Huntley and David Brinkley had higher TV ratings for their network news broadcasts, but at ABC News, John Daly did the best news anchor work in the 1950s.

Yes, I agree. I watched What's My Line in the 50's & 60's with my parents and I still watch it sometimes on youtube. The one with Groucho Marx if you haven't seen it is particularly funny.

That is one of my favorite episodes! Groucho had John Daly laughing so hard. I also love the ones with Debbie Reynolds. She was adorably funny, and so pretty. Too bad her husband, Eddie Fisher, was such a cheating jerk. Grateful that their union produced one of my favorite actresses and authors, but I wish Carrie was still with us.

My Mom LOVED that show, and so do I now that I can watch it on YT. I'm 59, and I only remember the cartoon intro. Probably because as soon as the show started, I was sent off to bed.
Mom thought this show was too "grown-up" for kids. I think she had a bit of a "girl-crush" on Arlene, mom reminded me a lot of Arlene because she dressed nice and was also smart and flirtatious.
On one episode of WML, I was thrilled to see Arlene wearing a dress that my mom also had. It was a sexy, little black dress she bought at Neiman Marcus that had a silk chiffon cape and rhinestones. I wore it to an event in the 1970s and it was still chic.
Arlene rocked everything she wore, smart and elegant lady and a mistress of the innuendo!

On the wikipedia page about the famous "Kitchen Debate" in Moscow in 1959, between Nikita Krushchev and Vice President Richard Nixon, the photo in the upper right corner shows John Charles Daly standing right behind Krushchev: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitchen_Debate. The few times (only 4, I believe) that he missed What's My Line in its 17 year run were all due to his covering major events as a correspondent.
